Dream Hunters Chapter 8: Welcome to Port Royale
THE WEATHER IS NOT in favor of the sailing of Daisuke, Riku, and Jack.
A few hours after their departure, a storm causes strong winds and raging waves that significantly slowed them down. If only it was a smooth sailing, they could have reached Port Royale in just twelve hours. Somehow, they did managed to survive the stormy sea and almost reached the port. Almost.
The unfavorable storm is bad enough. They did not needed to be attacked by a serpentine sea monster. Just when the port is already visible in the horizon, a monster has to appear and attack their boat.
“Umm, guys. We’ve got to do something about that!” Daisuke pointed to the serpent that breached into the surface.
“I got this.” Riku said, being the only one who is essentially good at long range combat among the three.
She created a bow made of rose plant and shot rose arrows. Her aim was good enough as she managed to hit the serpent’s right eye.
           “Yeah! Nice shot!” Jack exclaimed.
The serpent wailed in pain. As it screamed, it started to release a high-pressured water from its mouth at the trio’s direction. At that moment, they knew they were screwed.
“Oh that’s not good.” said Daisuke.
           “A-Abandon ship!!” Jack screamed.
The serpent released another pressurized water from its mouth. This time, the boat got hit and was destroyed. The trio managed to jump into the water in time, narrowly escaping the water cannon.
Riku breached from the water. “Daisuke! Jack!”
“Over here!” Jack yelled. He already got into a piece of wood from their boat as he called for Riku.
Riku swims towards Jack and held on to the piece of wood. “Where’s Daisuke?”
“Come on, give me your hand.” As soon as they are both on the boat’s wreckage, they started to look around for Daisuke.
Daisuke has breached from the water as well, holding on what used to be the mast of their boat. He was near the serpent which is still wailing and releasing water from its mouth.
“Daisuke! Get over here!” Riku yelled.
Jack concentrated and imagined a raft. Then, using his jackfruit tree power, he created a raft-like shaped tree big enough for the three of them to ride.
Riku shot a volley of rose arrows again. The scale of the serpent was too durable, however. The serpent did not paid attention to the rose arrows and focused on Daisuke. The serpent roared, then lunged towards Daisuke.
           “NOOOO!!” Riku shouted.
           “DAISUKE!!” Jack yelled.
A few hours earlier, at Port Royale, a young man is preparing all of his tools for fishing. Unlike other fishermen, the young man was not using a pole or a net. Rather, he is using harpoons, suggesting that he is hunting for larger catch.
The young man seems like the same age of Daisuke and Riku. He’s got a dark blue spiky hair, and a dark brownish skin similar to Daisuke. As he got into his fishing boat, he wore a straw hat.
“Oy, Raijin! You forgot your tonfas!” shouted a shorter, sturdy-looking old man who was running towards the young man.
The young man whose name is Raijin, tapped his sides. “Oh! Hahaha! Thanks Boris!”
The old man whose name is Boris, handed over the tonfas to Raijin. “You’re always in a hurry. You should try and take your time, lad.”
Raijin laughed. “Easy for you to say; you dwarves live for more than a century.”
“Well, the secret is to drink good ales.”
“I’ll keep that in mind, Boris.”
“OK, then. I’ll head back to Maelstrom. You better get a good catch.”
           “I will!”
As soon as Boris left the shipyard, Raijin started the engine of his boat. Unlike other fishing boat, Raijin’s is fully electric. On the side of the fishing boat is written what seems to be its name: Kaminari.
“That’s really one unique boat you got there, Raijin.” A man said with a shark tattoo on his shoulder. He is accompanied by two lackeys.
Raijin looked at the docks. He is not pleased to see the man who spoke, but he did not showed it. “Mr. Sera. What a pleasant surprise. What brought you here?”
Sera walked closer to the end of the harbor. “Just…making sure you do not forget that your due date is in four days.”
“I haven’t forget. Just as I didn’t last month. Or two months ago. Or for the last five years.”
           “That’s good to know.”
“Can I go now? Got some fish to hunt.”
Sera simply smiled, walk backwards, and then left.
“Alright, Kaminari. Time to hunt some sea monster.”
The seas around the island of Maria is known for serpentine sea monsters. For that reason, only large ships are capable to cross the seas around the island. The seabed is so deep that only sea serpents and other marine life are able to live down there. The dark, cold, and deep sea floor is a favorite breeding place of sea serpents that is currently attacking the trio.
Sea serpents does not always breach the surface. They do not have to do so since food is rich below. However, this particular sea serpent that is attacking the trio was actually lured to the surface by some bait.
Looking closely, Riku and Jack saw that the serpent is unable to leave the spot from where it is since its body have some sort of chain around it.
“DAISUKE!!” Riku shouted as she fired a volley of arrows towards the serpent. Jack somehow managed to attack in long range and used jackfruits as ammunition.
“Why are those scales so tough?!” Jack continued to attack even though he’s frustrated.
Riku was already tearing up, but she still continued to make rain of arrows.
The sea serpent also continued to roar. However, it acted strangely all of the sudden. Even Riku and Jack got confused and stopped attacking.
Then, it changed posture and shoot water from its mouth upward.
“FREEDOOOOOM!” Daisuke yelled as he was shot towards the sky.
           “DAISUKE!!” Riku and Jack shouted.
While midair, Daisuke charged his right arm with mana and aimed at the serpent. As soon as the serpent stopped releasing water, he started to fall. The serpent opened its mouth wide. When Daisuke was in range, he used his power to create a gigantic wooden arm, then punched the serpent on its mouth.
Rather than getting knocked out, the serpent roared even louder. Daisuke managed to use the gigantic arm as a platform to jump towards Riku and Jack. He landed in the water near them and swam towards the raft.
“I think you just made it angrier.” Said Jack who helped him get into the raft.
“Daisuke!” Riku hugged Daisuke, but quickly got off because of the slimy goo on Daisuke’s body. “Eew. Sorry.”
          “Naaaah.” Daisuke shrugged.
“We thought you were actually eaten.” Said Jack.
“Well, I hope that that serpent have good stomach, because that’s gonna digest some trees I created inside.”
“Guys, let’s chat later. That thing’s still firing those pressurized water.” Riku intervened.
“Okay. What do we do?” asked Jack.
But before they could do anything, a fishing boat suddenly appeared. The Kaminari. Raijin fired a dozen of sharp harpoons that pierced the tough scales of the serpent.
“Alright! You’re mine now!” shouted Raijin.
The serpent howled in pain. It released water again, but only hit the sea. Raijin then pushed a button. The harpoons suddenly glowed and electrified the serpent.
As the harpoons stopped glowing, smoke has risen from the serpent. It then collapsed and fell to the water lifeless.
           “Yes! Got one.” Raijin celebrated.
As he went around the serpent, he saw a raft and the trio. He saw that the skin of the one of the people in the raft glows with green streaks while the other one with reddish pink streaks.
The boat went towards the raft. When it was near enough, it stopped. Raijin then came out and greeted the trio.
“You guys are elves, right? You guys Okay?”
“Uhhh, yeah.  And yeah, thanks for asking. We got it under control though.” Riku replied.
“Wow. I thought the glowing skins of the elves were just rumors.” Raijin said in amazement.
The trio looked at each other. Jack and Riku released their abilities, then the glowing streaks on their skin disappeared.
Raijin then noticed their makeshift raft. “Sorry. Um, you guys wanna come over? That raft won’t get you anywhere.”
The trio did not hesitated and went over the fishing boat. It was large enough for a crew of twelve people, but it was being operated only by one.
“I’m Raijin, by the way, captain of Kaminari.”
“Thanks for letting us here, captain!” Daisuke replied enthusiastically.
“So, captain.” Riku asked with a sarcastic tone. “Where’s your crew?”
“I don’t have one. I, alone, operates Kaminari.” Raijin smilingly answered.
“Aren’t you still young to be fishing on your own here?” said Jack. “Turns out there are sea serpents here.”
“Yeah. This part of the seas are good for serpent hunting. They live far below. But, if you know how to lure and trap them, then it is easy to catch one.”
“And what do you do with your catch?” asked Daisuke.
“Gotta make some money somehow, so I sell it.” Raijin replied. “Also, thanks to you guys, I managed to kill that sea monster without a problem. It seems you guys already injured it. That thing is nasty, but could be sold for thousands of lanias back at Port Royale.”
Riku told Raijin about their plan on travelling to Port Royale. For some reason, Raijin did not noticed that they were elves and was shocked when he finally noticed.
Raijin decided to take the trio to Port Royale, but first hoisted the serpent before it attracts sharks and eat it before he got the chance to sell it.
“Those harpoons you used, how did it managed to pierce the scales of that serpent?” Riku asked.
“Sea serpent scales are not good with heat. Heat up the harpoons and those will surely pierce ‘em good.
“These are not chained to the boat but lit up with electricity. How did you do that?” asked Daisuke who was holding the harpoons that killed the sea monster.
“Those are embedded with batteries that releases electricity when I press a button. Same electricity that heat up the end. I guess you guys are not familiar with electricity?” Raijin replied.
“Actually, we are. And we also have batteries for portable radio.”
Daisuke and Raijin talked more about Raijin’s harpoons, although Daisuke wasn’t sure he understand what Raijin is saying most of the time. But he was glad when they finally reached Port Royale.
Even before they reach the harbor of Port Royale, there are already many boats and ships scattered on the sea. Most of them are fishing boat which makes sense since fishing is the primary source of income in Port Royale.
As Kaminari got closer to the harbor, many people on their boat and ships were astonished to the sea monster being pulled by the small fishing boat. Some were surprised, but most fishermen got envious.
“Hey, isn’t that Raijin’s boat?” said one fisherman.
“Yeah. Looks like he got lucky killing another sea serpent.” Said another.
“The azure scales alone would already sell for hundreds of lanias. Imagine how much he could get for selling the meat, innards, and bones.” Said another fisherman from another boat.
“How did he even managed to kill that thing?!” said a crew member from another boat.
S.S. Kaminari finally docked. People flocked around the boat trying to see the serpent. As soon as Raijin and the trio came out of the boat, the people were surprised even more to see three elves.
           “Mr. Manta!” shouted Raijin.
“Hey, Raijin.” Said Mr. Manta cheerfully. “Who are these friends of yours? And that sea serpent…”
“Well, these are Daisuke, Riku, and Jack. They are elves from Maria Island. They were attacked by the serpent. I managed to kill it then brought it here.”
“I see. So you guys are the so-called ‘Seekers’, I guess.”
“Yeah, sort of.” Riku replied as he gazed towards Daisuke.
“You think you can find me a buyer for the serpent?” asked Raijin.
“I’ll see what I can do. I’ll contact you once a buyer sees interest in buying a sea serpent.” Said Manta.
“Thanks, Mr. Manta. Come on guys. I’ll show you around for now.”
Port Royale is neither a country nor a city. It doesn’t belong to a certain kingdom as well. It simply became what it is after people from different places started to settle near the Coast of Northwest Aria Sea. From a simple fishing village, it became a fishing port.
The people started to develop the place by making roads, building houses made of wood and stone, and essentially turning the place into a business and tourist spot.
There’s really no government on Port Royale. The people are simply living in mutual trust, discipline, and cooperation. It was officially recognized as an autonomous region by the countries and kingdoms around Aria after it became part of United Alliance when a citizen from Port Royale became a high ranking official.
“And that’s the history of Port Royale.” Said Raijin.
“This cold creamy strawberry flavored milk on a fried dough is delicious.” Said Daisuke.
“You’re right. Good thing you managed to get our money from that serpent’s stomach.” Jack replied.
“Mmmm. We could buy more of these. I want to taste the ‘cookies and cream’ one.” Said Riku.
“You know, you guys could at least pretend to pay attention when someone is…nevermind. On to the tour!” Raijin resigned as they continued walking around the town.
