Qualits (pt. 1)
The wyverns of the stars who originate now at the Tree of Souls deep in the Abyss.
Prior to the tree existing, they once had a world of their own called Everveil. In this world they were the top predatory species and came in multiple different colors. Nine elements ran through their race with each soul attuned to a single element. On exceedingly rare occasions a dual element soul would be born but those were extremely unpredictable and often borderline feral without proper guidance and harmonious training for their elements to co-exist.
The elements are as follows: fire, water, earth, electricity, shadow, light, air, ice, and magic.
Those of the magic element alignment could display powers of any of the other types, though at a considerably lower power level than that of a qualit born with that element.
Over time fire element aligned qualits underwent changes in their biology to accommodate for their territory being near volcanoes. They lost their scales and gained feathers, becoming phoenixes who ceased to have a reliance on their souls rather than the soul-powered wyverns they’d once been.
On a similar note, water element aligned souls developed into their own separate species as well. They lost their wings but gained webbed feet and gills so that they could hide below the waves as sea serpents.
Now left with seven elements, the remaining qualits made cities and enacted a governing system. They lost themselves to their greed for power and desire for conquest and turned their gazes to the stars which they had once thought to have come from.
Strange dark magic begun to crop up in their pristine world, causing vast technological advances but at the cost of further eroding their values. Horrific experiments were conducted in the name of science, injecting this unknown tar-like substance into pregnant qualits and then confiscating the resulting eggs to observe the young.
One such experiment was the qualit Versila Silskiva whose father Raymos Silskiva sought a business deal with the head of the qualit government at the time. He had pledged his firstborn to become a test subject in exchange for the opportunity to work alongside the Head Councilmember Magnus Stonequil on compiling the results.
An unexpected encounter with one of the healer qualits who oversaw all aspects of injury recovery resulted in Raymos indulging his desire for control and he laid with the healer igna, who became gravid and bore a son, Nethreis.
Not wanting this illegitimate child to soil the Silskiva name, Raymos offered the child and his mother to be used in awful experimentation. Nethreis became a child soldier, taught nothing but how to kill, but escaped when he was fifteen during a cave-in Igna caused so her son could be free. Because he had unknowingly bonded himself to his mother, Nethreis took up the last name of Ignis in her memory following his time of grieving.
He became drafted into the capital city’s military and rose through the ranks swiftly due to his training. At the same time Versila broke free from the abuse she’d been under by her father and Magnus, resulting in the first manifestation of the entity known as Void who killed Raymos in an avalanche. Homeless, Versila wandered the streets looking for anyone to take pity on her as her mother, Havana Silskiva, had died not long after Raymos’s death from bereavement.
As fate had it, these two met. They had already met roughly ten years earlier when Igna had snuck Nethreis out to give him a taste of freedom and he had saved Versila from some bullies. But now they could begin a friendship and eventually romance.
They wed and were soul bonded by the Council with Magnus overseeing the union. A few months later Nethreis was dispatched to quell some unexplained qualit aggression and encountered the effects of prolonged exposure to the dark energy. This “corruption” drove their race mad, becoming feral and needing to be dealt with before innocent lives were lost.
The longer Nethreis was away on military missions, the lonelier Versila became. She had her job as a healer, something she’d wanted since she was young, but had few friends due to her hesitation to open up to others. Upon her discovery she was gravid with Nethreis’s child, she was involved in vicious rumors and forced to flee the city.
Nethreis gave chase once he returned, convinced she was unfaithful and unwilling to hear her explanation. The months of hunting down corrupted qualits had eroded his own questionable sanity and in a fit of rage he sliced through her throat, killing her but leaving her soul intact. The death was able to provide Void the energy to manifest fully as an abyssal creature and so she did, slipping away into the snow.
Nethreis, now distraught with grief, carried her soul with him until he at last could fly no longer and fell into a cavern, dying from the impact. Like Versila his soul survived and once he was assuredly dead, Void quietly stole away both souls.
