Which of your ocs, if any, participate in races? How seriously do they take winning? Do any of them have beef with each other or with canon characters?

Gio was intended to be a full on racer, but he tends to accidentally cause power outages when he gets excited, so that didn't last long.

Bernadette was a champion coach in her youth, the accident that forced the end of her career is what led her to being bitter regarding engines.

Cricket and Nolan are both retired national engines, very successful ones at that. Control is a bit of a collector, so he paid a pretty penny for them when they officially retired.

Geiger is a racer, they are, uh...spirited. Yeah, that's what I'll go with. They take it more serious than most trainfolk their age.

Paskha is the dining car that Turnov sometimes mentions! She and Turnov are siblings (Something seen as a bit unusual, usually engines and coaches that race together are a couple), and quite a power duo. They've been racing for a very long time, which is a representation of how good they are. If an engine doesn't race well, they're usually put back to typical passenger or freight work right away. They've been racing together for about 50 years (Trains age very slowly), and won't be stopping anytime soon.

Prince of Wales used to mention having a guard, and that's who Sentry is! He isn't very into the sport itself, but he does good at it so Prince still races with him.

Smokebox was an upcoming racer, his career was ended permanently when his boiler burst.

As for beef with canon characters, most of them are chill.

However, Geiger has a lot of hatred for just...other engines in general. They have some issues, especially with steam trains, so they just. really hate Rusty.

Bernadette is distrusting of engines in general, but usually people can work past it. However, she has sent Greaseball out of her office crying before-

Snowy hates electrics and diesels and she will have this fact broadcasted wherever she can.

The sheds were quiet, with only two of them. The others have given them privacy, when they heard the news about his siblings.

Thomas sent a sidelong glance at Edward- there's an unimaginable grief that is currently permeating from his smokebox, despite his valiant attempt to hide it. His steam practically danced around him, covering his face like a shield.

But it was brief, and Edward smiled at him sadly- he was trying to comfort Thomas, after all- and Thomas felt terrible for asking Edward about his own siblings... despite Edward dancing around the subject most of the time, still treating Thomas like he was fresh out of the works.

"... But Driver likes to say 'it's all in good hands'," Continued Edward delicately, "So perhaps it was the same for your siblings."

Maybe they really were in good hands- for all the rebuilding Thomas got that extended his working life, his siblings still had a long, Useful career without any changes to their shape. And Thomas knew, vaguely, that Southern engines were going to be replaced by electrics sooner or later. Perhaps they faced death with dignity.

So Thomas gave a sad smile back. "... Thanks, Edward."

TRAINTOBER DAY 25: THE LAST ONE

The big green engine groaned, as the cranes carefully lifted him from the broken rails and debris of wagons. Something warm and tasting of copper dripped onto his upper lip.

“You’ll be alright, Henry.” Judy tried to sound confident and uplifting, but it was clear neither she nor Jerome had ever dealt with a wreck this bad.

“Oh, thank God you’re alive…”

That voice surprised Henry. The Fat Controller stood in the snow between the tracks, looking mournfully up at his big green engine.

“Th… the signal was down, sir…” Henry rasped, his voice dry and hoarse. It hurt to talk.

I don’t care what caused this disaster, Henry.” Sir Topham Hatt cut in. He had a hard look in his eyes. “I’m just glad to see you’re not…” He trailed off.

“…Beyond repair?”

The stout gentleman bit his lip. “About that. Our workshop here can give you the repairs you need, but it will be a long time. And that’s without all the renovation work that’s been going on there.”

“But,” he continued, “I’ve gotten in touch with a friend of mine from the old days. You probably don’t know him, but he and I were close in our Swindon years. He said that he could have you rebuilt to the design of one of his new mixed-traffic engines. You’d be a different engine, and wouldn’t need Welsh Coal anymore. But I’ll leave the choice to you.”

Henry was silent for a moment. He considered the controller’s words, as his wheels landed gently on the well wagon.

‘Won’t that be nice…?’

Henry grimaced, and tried to dispel the strange voice in his smokebox.

“Where would you be sending me? And how long would I be gone?”

“Crewe, and he said the work would take about four months.”

Henry bit his lip. It felt raw.

“I want to go to Crewe, please.”
