In Korea The Trucks Have Eyes

One of the fun cultural things you probably won't see in a Kdrama is the trucks on the highway usually have eyes painted on or they have eye stickers. Truckers do this for a really smart reason.

Notice where your eyes almost automatically when you look at this picture.

The human brain evolved to recognize faces as a survival mechanism. There's a great paper on that HERE and the summary in simpler terms HERE. Basically, recognizing faces is so crucial to survival that it's safer for truck drivers to put eyes on the back.

Seeing a face wakes your brain up. For trucks doing long hauls where they often are on the road with other sleepy drivers the eyes keep other drivers alert, reducing traffic accidents. The eyes are also reflective, which makes them easier to see in the dark as well.

Some of the first eye stickers were introduced to Korea in 2020 and 94% of the drivers reported benefits from using them.

Alrighty Tumblr, I need some advice.

I got accepted into a Master's of Professional Science program in Marine Conservation last week. I applied for PhDs mostly, but didn't get in. My end goal is a PhD focusing on aquatic medicine.

Now, I'm still looking for fellowships and an MPS is pretty expensive. My biggest question is: is a MPS worth it or should I wait another year and try to find PhD funding?

I have a question for the science side of Tumblr:

There are two types of drugs: uppers, that makes you energetic and kill you, and downers, that makes you relaxed and kill you. Cocaine is an upper that also makes your eyes bigger, and weed is a downer that makes your eyes smaller.

So if you took equal amounts of both, would they just cancel out the effects or what would happen?
