🎶Stuck in an ADHD Rut🎷🪲

Howdy! If this applies to you, let's see if we can get you out of there!

From what I have learned, the little ADHD brain creature craves happy chemicals. What usually gives us those? A sense of completion and satisfaction with our work! But those with ADHD lack a sufficient amount of baseline happy chemicals, which means it's harder for us to want to get things done! 

If the reward at the end of a task doesn't give your brain enough happy chemicals, you're more likely to procrastinate!

So what are we going to do to get unstuck? If unmedicated or without therapy, it can be very difficult to work around the ADHD rut! But I can share some things that have helped me in the past.

Of course, everything I mention will not help 100%, because everyone's brains are complex and this is anecdotal!

If you are able to, find a window of time that is easiest for you to work at! I typically do my best work in the evening or at night. This isn't always the best solution, as working around a schedule is not always easy.

Crank the stimulus up to 10 if you're feeling under-stimulated/bored! Louder music, brighter lights, drink something warm... Even stretching can get the blood pumping because now you got all the bone crunches out of your system! Are you there, Brain? It's me, Bug!

When I can remember, I create a Very Detailed to-do list. But I also know that people with ADHD are notoriously bad at keeping track of lists! I tell myself, "First, write a bullet list of ideas. Second, cherry-pick what you like. Third, write the thesis/main idea. Fourth, write ONE paragraph…" This works more so for writing essays or an entire draft! For some reason, breaking down every single step makes it slightly more manageable for me. 

I have heard of people who stop writing right before an interesting part and take a break! Perhaps the thrill of wanting to finish up that good part is what makes people want to jump back in. 

This goes against the previous points, but sometimes writing the most interesting pieces of my stories first (as opposed to writing linearly) helps more! The burst of energy I get when reading back on these pieces drives me to continue writing! I remember how excited I was when I wrote it all down, and it makes me think that past Me was definitely onto something!

To sum up, the ADHD brain is a fussy child who needs to be constantly reminded how to get things done. The more you get angry at it, the harder it is to cooperate with it! But, that is easier said than done. No one said that gentle parenting your brain was easy.

There is a damning silence, from Linda's end. "You sold your little brother for 5 dollars?"

"I didn't say that," Candace replies, quickly. "That's not what I said. Mom. I would never actually do that."

"Candace."

"Mom." Candace echoes her tone, and readjusts her sunglasses. They've slightly dislodged by her sandwiching the phone between her chin and shoulder, and Candace takes another bite of her meatball sub. "Besides." She said. "Besides, it's not like I don't know where they are."

"So you are there with him? You are looking at your little brother and supervising his activities with your high school friends, right this instant?"

Shoot, Candace thinks, and steals Stacy's laptop right from her lap. It's a little dusty from all the sand of the beach, but sure enough, she's still watching Boltron's livestream. Onscreen, she watches Phineas and Ferb hanging upside down from the makeshift American Ninja obstacle course in Boltron's family's backyard across town. Ferb has a megaphone. Phineas is half naked and covered with green bodypaint. She can see the fireside girls running around in the backyard setting things on fire, so everyone's clearly having a great time.

So is she. Everyone her age who's ducked out of Boltron's ninja tournament of Doom is waiting for the sun to set and prepping for the first summer bonfire.

"I'm watching." She reassures her mother.

"And you don't want me to bust them?" Linda asks, like she's trying to trip Candace up in her lie.

Of course she wants her mother to bust her brothers for the things they do, Candace thinks with an eyeroll, if that's ever going to happen (and of course it will. Someday. Candace will make sure of it) but it isn't as if her principles cannot be unswayed in certain circumstances. Especially with high school senior popularity on the line. Boltron's trustworthy, somewhat, and Phineas and Ferb was going to do something bustable no matter who they were going to do it with. They've asked Candace's permission, kept her informed, and agreement had been settled, and as far as Candace is concerned Boltron has bought over the responsibility of watching over her brothers for the day.

"For five dollars?" Stacy had asked, with a raised eyebrow. "Both of them?"

"5 dollars for Phineas." Candace said. "With the meatball sub, and his mom's Loubutinies as collateral for borrowing Ferb."

"Oh," Stacy had said. "Ok, that makes more sense." And they had left it at that.

Candace wishes her mom could be equally understanding.

"Nothing bustable." Candace said, a blatant lie this time, but again. For 5 dollars, a meatball sub and a pair of Loubutinies, it is no longer her problem, ergo. Not her mother's.

"Ok," Linda said, still deeply suspicious, but she can't call her out on anything anymore when Candace is generally truthful most other times. "Well, have fun at your bonfire with your friends. I want all of my kids home before 2 am tonight, ok? You know how your little brothers gets sleepy before bedtime, they're morning people."

They are, which is horrible. But it's a good point. "I'll get them home." Candace promises.

"I'll trust you. And for God's sake, Candace, whenever you want to lend someone your brothers for a couple of hours, Phineas is at least a little more valuable than 5 dollars."

Candace thinks about this, polishing off her dinner. Jeremy hops by, picking up her bundled up wrapper on his way to the trash can, and he drops her a kiss on her hairline before he goes. She's still a little pecky, so she supposed her mother is right.

"You're right, mom. I won't do it again." Candace replies.

Phineas is at least also worth a bag of hot chips, on the side. She'll renegotiate later.

I'm still stuck on that bad politics/same interests marriage poll. Would you honestly be with someone who didn't read just because they had “good” politics?

I mean, it was a joke poll, but what’s the gold standard for Bad Politics?  Even if I were entirely apolitical and didn't center my politics on highfaluntin' bullshit like universal human rights, my religion (and lack thereof), sexuality, and gender identity are still politicized, so the marriage options would necessarily have to be limited to those whose ideology could accommodate my personhood to begin with. After all, even if we do share interests, it would be impractical for a couple to attend a pre-concert lecture by Jordi Savall together when one regards the other (and possibly even Jordi Savall) as degenerate.  Is the choice, then, between Phineas Q. Fascist and Shawna Shares-My-Core-Beliefs-But-Isn’t-The-Exact-Same-Kind-of-Communist-I-Am?

Anyway, I’ve never been with anyone who didn’t read at all, but I’ve dated people who didn’t fuck with fiction or poetry. It wasn’t ever a problem—they liked seeing me lose my shit over literary criticism and I liked seeing them lose their shit over water resources engineering and nanoethics, or whatever. That mutual admiration went a long way.  I do understand the “must love dogs” approach to relationships up to a point, but I also believe people should give themselves more credit than fandom gives a character who ate a ham sandwich once and is now always drawn holding a ham sandwich: the specific things we like are only a part of who we are.

Also, there are a lot of excellent reasons not to lose touch with friends when you get into a relationship, and that one is a biggie: when you aren’t relying on one person for all your enrichment, you don’t have to get frustrated when they don’t want to accompany you to the three hour Bloomsday Eve Spook-tacular in some associate professor’s unfinished basement.

Doof is directly identified as Darthenshmirtz, implying he is a full-fledged sith and thus potentially Darth Vader trying to usurp Palpatine under the Rule of Two.

I've been driving a lot today so I finally started Midst! just finished episode 13 and here is my shit sandwich so far:

the positive (pt.1)

very intriguing! it reminds me a lot of Disco Elysium, Trigun (haven't finished it), and Terry Pratchett (I've only read Going Postal). I am always endlessly delighted by nonsense bureaucracy. each of the protagonists are very interesting, I especially like moc weep. Lark I'm very much looking forward to learning what the hell her deal is. I also really like Phineas, although since his situation continues to get kinda worse and he is punished for like, existing, someone please let me know if this is going to keep happening without reprieve (a la Jonathan Sims) so I can bounce now. scapegoating like that is a huge trigger for me (at least without things Getting Better). otherwise really cool!

the negative

the Radio Lab-esque cadence is a huuugggeee pet peeve of mine. I absolutely can't stand it (I mean I can but, with enough monkey rage to demolish a rage room or two) it very often distracts me from what's going on. I think the narrators are at their strongest when they get to flub around, make up words that fit, splutter in astonishment, chitter back and forth, just being "Imperfect" about it. when they say things like they're telling a story to someone and not on NPR at 5am. and then when I turn the volume up to where I can understand what they're saying, the S sounds are so piercing it physically hurts to listen to. it aggravates my headaches and tinnitus big time 😭 (to be fair I am slightly dehydrated too.) there's also quite a few parts where they play the sound effects and the music so loud that I can't hear anything of what's going on to its own detriment, like I don't think the effect adds to the story in a meaningful way.

the positive (pt.2)

very intrigued by this Terror concept. I would love to learn more about how that works. everything they say about the setting always leads to more questions and I'm so far really enjoying it. same with the fold. and the (casual) anomalies. I love the whole stupid notary and valor thing they have going on. the big calculator machines with the beads. the stupid gala politics. I hope they get really into the bureaucratic weeds at some point, that would be delightful. I'm really excited to learn more about the world and the characters. I like the casual acknowledgement of the listener and that they're narrating a story. I wonder if the narrators have a part to play within the story themselves or if they just narrate it like that? also! spoilers for ep. 13 - I loovve whatever the hell Lark does to kill fuze. I love death scenes like that, it's very that one twilight zone episode.

So the epilogue wasn't the true epilogue but the publishers didn't think the world was ready for Rowling's original idea: Harry Potter was pregnant with Severus Snape’s baby!!!

Severus was at Bills wedding because he wanted to give Harry a gift but he is disguised as a Weasley. He and Harry talk and they end up getting along. He sneaks Harry some fire whiskey as Harry is upset about having to leave everyone and they accidentally hook up.

Harry realises it is Severus at the end and the man runs. Harry feels super guilty so he avoids Ginny and that is why Harry follows her on the map. 

Phineas Nigellus is there to keep an eye on Harry and notices something is up. The doe and the sword in the lake are just a cover, Severus actually wants to know what is going on with Harry. 

The reason the locket was so hell bent on killing Harry was because it sensed the baby and knew that Severus had betrayed it. 

There was actually meant to be a pregnancy test fall out when Ron saves Harry but it was all cut. 

The reason Harry is tired and asks for a sandwich from Kreacher is because he was suffering from pregnancy tiredness and hunger.
