I am begging y'all (non spanish speakers) to not write spanish speaking characters, speaking spanglish. I get that idea is if you can't write them having full Spanish conversations, the spanglish is the next best thing, or maybe the character you're writing just genuinely talks like that but I PROMISE if you are a non Spanish speaker you most likely don't know how to write spanglish properly either 😭 its not just sticking in random Spanish words into English sentences PLEAAASE there's a flow of things THERE'S NUANCE and it makes the dialogue feel unnatural and forced, not more authentic. PLEAAAAASE I don't mean to be an asshole pero like FUCK bro 😭😭😭

citizen kane is obviously one of the best things anyone’s ever made but my favorite orson welles movie is still chimes at midnight. that son of a bitch loved shakespeare so much and by sewing together segments from a bunch of different plays he ended up making the first truly great english-language shakespeare film adaptation. and his falstaff is one of the pantheon film performances, no question. staggering, soulful, essential stuff.

i'm really tired right now and this will be incoherent but highlander bodice rippers, the movie poor things, using scottish folktales in your work when you're not scottish.

this of course goes for everyone who takes stuff from cultures that are not their own to use in their work: removing all the context of when, where, and WHY these things were written, dumbing down or erasing the historical elements completely, and you're left with something unoriginal and empty, easily consumed by the masses. because you just really wanted to write something sexy or scary, but like...surface level.
