ok look look look I don’t want to stomp on anyone’s creativity here but I’m gonna have to disagree with everyone on the poll saying Irving has a degradation thing going on, that just ain’t it at all

the degradation thing is Little all the way, btw. that is a man who wants to be broken down to filth and then built up every day of his career: you can see it in his eyes.

however Irving’s psychosexual religious trauma comes from simultaneously reading scriptures insisting that God loves him just as he is, and living in a church which says you always have to Strive and Improve and Do Good, and holding those two realities in his head since he was about five. which means that if just one person read him the period-appropriate version of Mary Oliver’s ‘Wild Geese’ he’d crumble like a little cheese cracker in their hand and do literally anything for them at all. that’s not even a praise kink so much as a ‘good enough’ kink; if he got as far as praise the guy would probably implode.
