It's stupid, Billy thinks, as he lights himself a cigarette. It's stupid to think kissing Harrington would change anything.

The world is still shit. His nose is bleeding and now there are stains on his favourite shirt. Nothing will ever change, he realizes. Billy will do something wrong or rather not good enough and will get what's coming for him. Usually a fist or a belt.

He sits at the quarry and now the blood is also dripping on the Camaro's hood. Because Billy taints everything he touches, apparently.

Yesterday he thought the world might change. But at the end of the day, he‘ll always be Neil Hargrove‘s son.

"Shit, Billy, what happened?"

Billy looks up.

Harrington's eyes are wide and his hands are slightly trembling as he comes closer.

"What always happens." He shrugs and takes another drag from the cigarette.

"Does…. This happen often?"

"I get on people's nerves. It'll always happen, pretty boy."

Harrington's hand softly cups his cheek. It's so soft, it hurts more than any beating.

"No, it won’t. Not anymore." Harrington sounds so sure. Doesn't he know who he's talking to?

"Why do you think that?" He swallows a bit of blood.

"I won't let them."

I've just finished the main body of House of Leaves and now only have the exhibits and appendices to look through.

Before I began reading I had no idea what to expect, and yet this book still managed to exceed my expectations. It was a slow start, the text is incredibly dense and at first I had trouble remembering who was writing which footnotes. But the story absolutely blew me away! Zampanó's writing on the Navidson Record is so in-depth it almost had me believing it was real. I wonder how many of the references cited are real and how many fake.

I've read that some people skip over Johnny's longer footnotes because they find them annoying, but I simply can not understand that. Johnny's experience is intrinsic to the story! Plus, he's my special little man 🥺 please don't ignore him, you'll make him sad. He even mentions this in chapter 21: "Wherever I walk people turn from me. I'm unclean."
