Hey folks if you have the means to, I really recommend listening to music using an mp3 player, specifically the Documents app (by Readdle).This isn’t an ad I’m just really enjoying the experience.

Pros:

• Most features are completely free and work offline

• Can download literally any song you want either from bandcamp or youtube (if you have a tool to download from there), screen recordings (just convert your mp4 to mp3) or otherwise and import it into the app.

• This means you can put your own recordings/songs into the app.

• Can make folders for playlists

• Can export the mp3 files from the app

• Can rename mp3 files, and edit meta information. (although theres a secondary app that lets you edit more in depth + add an album cover called Evertag)

• Standard music player interface, including shuffle, skipping back/forth, scrubbing, song speed, song repeat, adjustable queue, playing on an external device, playing with the device closed, with the added benefit of file searching.

• You can change the file name, while also separately changing the Meta name. This means you can name songs anything you want for organizational purposes and still have it show up properly while playing.

• Retains great audio quality

• You can toggle songs to remember where you last paused them and play from there, or reset.

• You can use Documents for more than just music! Any kind of file stores just fine I think.

• …….has a VPN for its in app browser? I have no idea how it works really. Proceed with caution. Could be a pro for people who need a discreet way to access a search engine?

Cons:

• ONLY available on IOS. (probably the worst con.)

• Can only queue one song at a time, unless you manually rearrange the queue

• importing mp3s into the app causes them to autoplay, but this isn’t really an issue. You can just pause it.

• You have to download every song and keep them on your device, but hey! This can also be a pro. An artist recently took all their music off the internet and I’m glad I snagged some songs I like before they were gone.

• Non customizable UI

• Since Documents is primarily for file organization, playlists have to be made as folders manually. This is pretty easy, however!

I wont make a tutorial on how to use it or obtain mp3s but check it out! Do yourself a favor and actually own your music. Just make sure to support artists you like by actually paying for music when possible.

Things I learned while using a smartphone for digital art

This week was pretty fun but also quite busy/rough. 

A picture I’ve been working on got lost when Autodesk Sketchbook encountered a “cannot open file” type of error. Partially due to my fumbling hands and the app lagging, the file was overwritten with a new canvas, so I lost progress on it...

Maybe that’s a blessing in disguise. I’ve been rethinking the layout/form of the drawing (one of those aesthetic, ‘choose a magical pill’ kind of drawings). So this situation forces me to go back and improve on it. Which I’ll do because while I may be a scatterbrain with many ideas that don’t become a tangible thing, I still don’t like abandoning most things I actually start doing.

Also, funny to think that this happens shortly after my SO gifted me a drawing tablet (though it’s still on its way.) While it isn’t the fanciest device out there, it seems to have promising reviews and might just be a good way for me to break out of my comfort zone (as a mobile drawer) so I could properly learn how to do digital art via a tablet.

So be prepared for a good deal of experimentation in my future works! I still plan on using Autodesk. But I also see how using the PC program and having a tablet and pressure-sensitive stylus could produce different results. 

That being said, drawing on a cellphone with a stylus had some perks. The biggest one being on-the-go drawing and being able to quickly scan in a sketch after drawing it naturally via pen/pencil.

Here are some things I learned while drawing on a mobile phone:

Layer management is your best friend. 

It’s likely that your cellphone may not be able to handle as many layers as a PC program. While this may seem like a flaw, this limitation forced me to learn how to block out what I was drawing so that I wouldn’t be swimming in a sea of layers to begin with.

The above illustration uses 16 layers (not counting the scanned in pen/pencil art from my sketchbook.) The line art gets one layer (which is generally made simple from tracing the pen sketch). Each character/object (in this case the bench) gets a layer for coloring and a layer for shading. The background is all one layer + a layer for shading. Throw in a layer for lighting, a layer for a warm, bluish overlay, and a layer for my signature, and that’s the picture.

My trick for coloring each character was to assign them two initial layers. The bottom one would eventually be the final result. The top one would be where I color in a region using the fill tool, add detail if needed, and then merge it with the bottom layer underneath. Rinse and repeat as many times as needed until the character/object is completely filled in on one layer.

I worked through each character, one by one and not multiple ones at once, to prevent merging the wrong layers together.

Blocking things out by character and object helped with shading in both their general form and also details without interfering with the shading of other objects.

Choose your phone carefully, and check for stylus compatibility! 

Unfortunately, the phone I have doesn’t work with a pressure-sensitive stylus I once ordered that was advertised to work with both iPhones and Android phones. I figured this out when checking out its manual. I lucked out at the start because I had a Note 4. But then that died on me. This was likely an internal failure and something due to wear/tear. A new battery wouldn’t cut it. 

In the interest of being frugal and needing a new phone ASAP, I got the Essential Phone since it was affordable, stylish, and super spacious. At the time, I failed to think about stylus compatibility. I figured that any thin, capacitive stylus that wasn’t like your finger would cut it. Somehow I made this setup work. But this lack of pressure sensitivity (which was much more present in the Note 4 + its stylus) was also noticeably limiting.

So if you’re buying a phone that you plan to use for drawing, do the research on how it handles styluses if you aren’t planning on buying a phone that includes one already.

Sit through adjusting your preferences to avoid future headaches. I personally don’t like zoom-in features that tilt the canvas. While this is partially due to my own clumsiness, I also thought: Why use that when you could simply tilt your phone? 

Other things to consider are going into your app’s Pen Mode so your hands can’t leave stray marks on your drawing. Since I wasn’t able to do that with my phone, I adjusted how I held the stylus and got used to the double-tap Undo shortcut since I was prone to the occasional stray dot.

Be careful not to close your app without saving! 

This may sound laughably basic. But when it comes to cellphones, it’s easy to make a careless mistake in the midst of multitasking while drawing--whether you’re researching reference pictures or shuffling through your playlist. I suspect that I left Autodesk on multiple tasks (like having a selected region) and closed it out sometime in the middle of doing something else only to open up the app again and then work on another drawing. This might have contributed to something like the most recent error that made me lose a drawing.

While you’re at it, expect to back-up many pictures/projects to your computer. 

This process will force you to label and organize your drawings. Also do this so that whenever you need to reset your phone or change drawing apps, you don’t lose everything. This is also good for seeing how your picture turns out on a bigger screen.

At the end of the day, your drawing skills are more important than whatever tools you use. Having good tools is great for making the drawing process feel more natural to you. However--this is something many artists can agree with--it’s better to master what you do with the basics than to get overwhelmed by fancy brushes and effects (especially when you misapply or overuse them.)

Yzin might be an emu

Yzin kept her eyes slitted when the Too’orlian guards came into the captivity chamber.

She had folded her body into the wakeful-restive pose, with her neck folded along her spine and her feet tucked under her body. The rest of her flock had barely settled down into similar positions, after much whistling of distress and confusion. Small victories were a necessity of morale, she decided. Even if it was only her own morale.

Her tunic was filthy, beginning to reek of stale feces and watered down cleaning product. She made a metal note to contact David’s eldest hatchling, for instructional cleaning information.

The guards circled the chamber, eyeing the other captives in silence.

Pass over us, pass over us, pass over us, she chanted silently, hoping for at least another shift to pass.

The guards stopped in front of their cell; the shuffling of their feet brought several heads up from her flock. Yzin deliberately kept her head down.

“Too calm,” the first guard said, waving his claws at the caged scientists. “Maybe sick. We tell captain?”

The second guard waved a claw dismissively, before bringing the butt of his rifle down onto the nearest bar of the cage. The rest of the flock startled up, moving to the back of the cage with distressed and fearful whistles.

“They are fine. This one, maybe.” The guard gestured at Yzin with his claw, then crouched down. Yzin brought her head up, close enough that even her poor olfactory senses could pick up the smell of rotting meat on his breath.

She made sure to keep her body angled just so, flush against the bars: Never let ‘em know your body is smaller than it is, she could almost hear David whisper to her.

“Why you no sing?” The Too’orlian guard asked her. “No sing, bring low money. Bad for business.”

“I wait to sing. I wait for many things. I wait for hatchlings, I wait for a mate, I wait for my mother to accept my career...I wait for my human to come.” She pulled her head back slowly, then jabbed her beak forward as hard as she could.

She shook the blood and eye remnants off of her beak as the remaining guard dragged his crewman towards the medical bed in the center of the chamber.

While the screaming commenced, she unfolded her wings straight up, touching the joints over her head, breathing out to compact her lungs, and forced her body through the bars. Both rifles had been dropped; she used her beak and one foot to line up the shot and hold the trigger, the body of the rifle held against her ribs with one wing and braced against the bars she had just come through. Squeeze gently, don’t pull, she reminded herself.

Once the guards were dead, she went to the door and disabled the automatic override, then disconnected the manual override mechanisms. She took a moment to smooth her feathers, despite the lack of difference it made. Then she went to the corpses of the guards and located sufficient incendiary devices, climbed the cages, and carefully rigged the vent to explode if anything tried to come through it.

Then she released the prisoners.

She stood apart from the group, wanting to wail. Wanting to stamp her feet and thrash her head, wanting to tear out her own feathers in mourning for their combined suffering.

I must keep going, she told her self. I must keep going, I must, I must. I must. To stop is to watch all of us die. I must.

She turned to the only computer console in the room, perched herself, and began.

First, she disabled the automatic override for the air circulation to the chamber, then to her entire half of the ship. Next, she forced her way into the communication systems.

She pulled out the only object her tunic had been able to conceal; a small, flat disc. It contained a playlist that David had made for her. He had handed it to her just before the last time she had seen him. She inserted the disc into the console, brought up the first song, and jammed it through every outgoing communication signal that the ship had, and set it on repeat.

One of her scientists nudged her with his wingtips after an indeterminate amount of time, the physical touch knocking her out of her near catatonic state.

“What now?”

“We wait.”

“You cautioned us to wait when we were first captured. Now we are in a bigger cage, with much more dire consequences.”

“Yes.”

“If Lieutenant Richards does not come?”

“He will come.”

“We have traveled two sleep cycles. He has only ever-”

“He will come.”

“But in the very likely event-”

“You are terrible at playing poker. I do not assign blame for this, as it is a failing of our species; it is a human game that has been taught to me. We are doing what is called a ‘sitting duck’, which is part of ‘bluffing’. We are waiting for the hidden ace. He will come.” Yzin touched her beak to his, and whistled comfort.

“However-”

“Your concern is noted. It is the fifth of its kind to be raised in two days. At this point in time, it is redundant and arbitrary. You have witnessed both my research regarding the lieutenant, and his own personal accomplishments. If that is not enough, then there is no other comfort I can provide you.”

Her subordinate left, to rejoin the group of fellow prisoners.

Several hours later, the Too’orlian captain had managed to solder a small hole in the door, large enough to speak through.

“Your hope will die with, screaming. I make much scream. You hope for what? For die screaming? Make much bad for business!”

Yzin was about to answer him, when the ship lurched alarmingly. She could not hold back her whistles of joy.

“I hoped for time! I hoped for your death! Did you know that humans are persistence hunters? My human has tracked me across half a planet! Did you truly think he would not track me through the black?” Yzin laughed, her feathers ruffled out in pure relief. The ship lurched again, followed by an explosion.

The Too’orlian cursing faded down the hallway.

Ten minutes later, David screamed her name through the hole in the door.

She re-enabled the manual override mechanisms and slid the door open.

“Goddammit, if I have to listen to Stayin’ Alive one more fucking time I will blow mine, and everybody else’s brains out! Your music privileges are permanently revoked! But also I just blew up a shit ton of stuff and I really fuckin’ miss it, so getting kidnapped more often should definitely be on your list of shit to do.”

Yzin drew her head back and stabbed him in the leg with her beak as hard as she possibly could.

“Motherfucking emu!” David screeched. “Fuck it, fuck it, get up here and do the shoulder thing, we got incoming! Everybody copy? I got hostages and incoming on section 8B, lead me out with twenty plus! Debby, get the fuck on my six! Rachel, if I don’t have evcac in T-minus sixty I’m grounding you until you’re forty-fucking-five! And I swear to God in Heaven if you’re Uncle Mike doesn’t meet us at Vega Four with a shit ton of dimplomatic immunity paperwork I’m never coming to any birthday ever! Dammit Yzin, squeeze! Gently! Fuck, I might as well have a six year old strapped to my back. Okay, see that little thing trying to look around the corner? Lean way over, more, more, squeeze, GOOD GIRL, THE RINGING IS JUST TEMPORARY HEARING LOSS, YOU’LL BE FINE, I PROMISE.”

I'm having a little trouble listening to your playlists? I can listen to the ones on the deities 8tracks but spotify won't let me listen without making an account. I don't have one and I'd really rather not make one since I'd only be using it for this one thing. Can you tell me how I can still listen to them or at least list the songs here?

Ahhh I’m really sorry, but unfortunately with Spotify, you need to make an account in order to listen to any music there – which I admit is the one thing I don’t like about it either, cuz I can’t even sample playlists unless I’m logged in!

Anyway, I used to prefer 8tracks for OC playlists and I still have the original ones there, but I stopped updating my 8tracks mixes a while ago after they put massive caps on everyone’s listening time – tho it seems they’ve finally lifted it, I’ve kinda move on and migrated to Spotify. Since then, Spotify has improved a lot and has FINALLY allowed people to make custom cover art and add descriptions to playlists. It has it’s flaws for sure, but at the end of the day, Spotify is 10 times easier for me to update with new tracks for all the DEITIES playlist, without many of the restrictions that 8tracks has with artist tracks and listening order (save for mobile, which is usually on shuffle without premium).

Believe me, I know how uneasy it feels to make an account for an application that you really don’t anticipate using for anything else… but it’ll honestly be easier if you just make an account and give Spotify a try. The alternative that you’re asking me to do, would be to set aside a bulk of my time to manually list all 70+ tracks on Set’s massive masterlist… and then repeat the process for the other 33 playlists on the DEITIES account, which probably breaks 1000+ unique tracks. I don’t want to spend hours recording and/or linking them all in a list for tumblr, and I doubt that you want to spend hours searching them all yourself, right?

Still, if all you want to do is view the tracklists to get a feel for the mixes, then I think that if you view each playlist on mobile, you should be able to see the first 30 tracks of each on – which is enough for some, but not all of them. You can give it a test by clicking the link to Set’s masterlist on your mobile phone.

Otherwise, I have to be honest and say that creating a Spotify account is your best bet to enjoying the project playlists, which I still update when I find new tracks worth adding (Also!! You don’t have to install Spotify’s desktop app to use it, you can listen to playlists on web if you prefer). I recommend giving Spotify a try, and if you really don’t like using it, there’s no obligation to continue. But I hope you’ll learn to like it and get a chance to listen to the playlists ;;)9

Hi! As someone who's been streaming 24/7 for some time now, I just want to share some tips for streaming! 

Note: I use an hourly-looped playlist and put it on repeat (no shuffle) throughout the whole day, only pausing the playback at 11.55pm, logging out and closing the app, then restarting the app and continue streaming at 12am KST daily. I’ve heard this will help in counting the daily attendance or something, but I’m not sure. I’m doing it only because it’s become a habit now. This tutorial only applies towards looped streaming.

I use the hourly streaming playlist made by @NoBoundariesSV on twitter, accessible here: https://twitter.com/NoBoundariesSV all credits to them!! Good Job~~ (it is recommended to put your songs into a playlist when streaming on Melon so that the loop does all the work for you instead of manually choosing every song all the time. And of course, the time is already adjusted so that every song will get to be played throughout the hour!!)

As shown in second picture above, the streaming does stop from time to time and warning messages will pop up. There are a few possibilities, one:

So for all the above you'll just have to tap play and the streaming will resume after you have either checked your network connection or closed the pop-up. I think it might vary between devices or IOS and android, but this is for IOS, and please drop me a dm if you have other versions of the same condition!!

Since your streaming might stop from time to time, you might have skipped some songs in the process before you could tap to start the playback again. This is mainly because Melon charts count hourly plays instead of the number of plays in every hour. This means they would only count one song once in every one hour. So for example if you play Not Today once at 8.30am and another time at 8.45am, the charts will only count it as one stream since both happened in the same hour. 

Therefore, to make sure the right songs streaming are counted during the hour, it's best to estimate which song to resume playing rather than just tapping play There are 15 songs in the playlist, so to make a quick calculation, each song will be around 4 minutes. Just take a look at your time and divide the time accordingly, for example, if the streaming stopped and your time is at 8.32am, you'll have to make a quick calculation, 8x4=32 Which means during that period of 32 minutes, 8 songs in the playlist should be played. So resume streaming from the 9th song.  Doing the above is just a quick way of doing it, since most of us are busy and don’t have the time to sit down and count which song should be played at the moment. But, you can either do that, or you can refer here to see the accurate start and end times for each song in the playlist here:

The second guard waved a claw dismissively, before bringing the butt of his rifle down onto the nearest bar of the cage. The rest of the flock startled up, moving to the back of the cage with distressed and fearful whistles.

“They are fine. This one, maybe.” The guard gestured at Yzin with his claw, then crouched down. Yzin brought her head up, close enough that even her poor olfactory senses could pick up the smell of rotting meat on his breath.

She made sure to keep her body angled just so, flush against the bars: Never let ‘em know your body is smaller than it is, she could almost hear David whisper to her.

“Why you no sing?” The Too’orlian guard asked her. “No sing, bring low money. Bad for business.”

“I wait to sing. I wait for many things. I wait for hatchlings, I wait for a mate, I wait for my mother to accept my career…I wait for my human to come.” She pulled her head back slowly, then jabbed her beak forward as hard as she could.

She shook the blood and eye remnants off of her beak as the remaining guard dragged his crewman towards the medical bed in the center of the chamber.

While the screaming commenced, she unfolded her wings straight up, touching the joints over her head, breathing out to compact her lungs, and forced her body through the bars. Both rifles had been dropped; she used her beak and one foot to line up the shot and hold the trigger, the body of the rifle held against her ribs with one wing and braced against the bars she had just come through. Squeeze gently, don’t pull, she reminded herself.

Once the guards were dead, she went to the door and disabled the automatic override, then disconnected the manual override mechanisms. She took a moment to smooth her feathers, despite the lack of difference it made. Then she went to the corpses of the guards and located sufficient incendiary devices, climbed the cages, and carefully rigged the vent to explode if anything tried to come through it.

Then she released the prisoners.

She stood apart from the group, wanting to wail. Wanting to stamp her feet and thrash her head, wanting to tear out her own feathers in mourning for their combined suffering.

I must keep going, she told herself. I must keep going, I must, I must. I must. To stop is to watch all of us die. I must.

She turned to the only computer console in the room, perched herself, and began.

First, she disabled the automatic override for the air circulation to the chamber, then to her entire half of the ship. Next, she forced her way into the communication systems.

She pulled out the only object her tunic had been able to conceal; a small, metallic bead. It contained a playlist that David had made for her, handed to her just before the last time she had seen him. She linked the bead into the console, brought up the first song, and jammed it through every outgoing communication signal that the ship had, and set it on repeat.

One of her scientists nudged her with his wingtips after an indeterminate amount of time, the physical touch knocking her out of her near catatonic state.

“What now?”

“We wait.”

“You cautioned us to wait when we were first captured. Now we are in a bigger cage, with much more dire consequences.”

“Yes.”

“If Lieutenant Richards does not come?”

“He will come.”

“We have traveled two sleep cycles. He has only ever-”

“He will come.”

“But in the very likely event-”

“You are terrible at playing poker. I do not assign blame for this, as it is a failing of our species; we are biologically ill-suited for deception, and socially conditioned to avoid risk, regardless of mathematically favorable odds. It is a human game that has been taught to me. We are doing what is called a ‘sitting duck’, which is part of ‘bluffing’. We are waiting for the hidden ace. He will come.” Yzin touched her beak to his, and whistled comfort.

“However-”

“Your concern is noted. It is the fifth of its kind to be raised in two cycles. At this point in time, it is redundant and arbitrary. You have witnessed both my research regarding the lieutenant, and his own personal accomplishments. If that is not enough, then there is no other comfort I can provide you.”

Her subordinate left, to rejoin the group of fellow prisoners.

Several hours later, the Too’orlian captain had managed to solder a small hole in the door, large enough to speak through.

“Your hope will die with, screaming. I make much scream. You hope for what? For die screaming? Make much bad for business!”

Yzin was about to answer him, when the ship lurched alarmingly. She could not hold back her whistles of joy.

“I hoped for time! I hoped for your death! Did you know that humans are persistence hunters? My human has tracked me across half a planet! Did you truly think he would not track me through the black?” Yzin laughed, her feathers ruffled out in pure relief. The ship lurched again, followed by an explosion.

The Too’orlian cursing faded down the hallway.

Ten minutes later, David screamed her name through the hole in the door.

She re-enabled the manual override mechanisms and slid the door open.

“Goddammit, if I have to listen to Stayin’ Alive one more fucking time I will blow mine, and everybody else’s brains out! Your music privileges are permanently revoked! But also I just blew up a shit ton of stuff and I really fuckin’ miss it, so getting kidnapped more often should definitely be on your list of shit to do.”

Yzin drew her head back and stabbed him in the leg with her beak as hard as she possibly could.

“Motherfucking emu!” David screeched. “Fuck it, fuck it, get up here and do the shoulder thing, we got incoming! Everybody copy? I got hostages and incoming on section 8B, lead me out with twenty plus! Debbie, get the fuck on my six! Rachel, if I don’t have evcac in T-minus sixty I’m grounding you until you’re forty-fucking-five! And I swear to God in Heaven if you’re Uncle Mike doesn’t meet us at Vega Four with a shit ton of diplomatic immunity paperwork I’m never coming to any birthday ever! Dammit Yzin, squeeze! Gently! Fuck, I might as well have a six year old strapped to my back. Okay, see that little thing trying to look around the corner? Lean way over, more, more, squeeze, GOOD GIRL, THE RINGING IS JUST TEMPORARY HEARING LOSS, YOU’LL BE FINE, IT’S REALLY COMMON FOR SCREAMER CANNONS.”
