No, no, the god who assists Odysseus the most after Athena is unquestionably Zeus.

Zeus genuinely has no problems with Odysseus and makes it very clear that he finds the man brilliant and would have already had him home and safe if he had his way, but he makes it clear that he's deferring to Poseidon who actually has the problem with Odysseus because, ultimately, the sea is Poseidon's domain and kingdom and Zeus doesn't intend to step on his brother's toes.

I'd definitely give third place to Apollo however. The big bug-bear about Apollo in the Odyssey is just that he's much less tangible than Athena or even Hermes who appears to Odysseus multiple times to help guide him/give him proclamations. His presence is everywhere though; like I've previously mentioned (and like he did with Jason) it's Apollo protecting Odysseus from Poseidon as he sails the sea after Odysseus blinds Polyphemus. It's also Apollo keeping Telemachus safe. His most vital role by far is when Odysseus returns to Ithaca in time for the challenge that will determine the next king. Not only is it a shooting contest whose first hurdle is to string a bow, the challenge itself takes place on a festival day for Apollo. Athena is there with Odysseus and Telemachus physically, but Apollo is looking after them in spirit, sending signs and signals to keep Telemachus especially safe.

(Od. Book 15, Telemachus warns about the state of Odysseus' house to Theoclymenus, a son of one of Apollo's prophets.)

There's also the fact that Odysseus makes sure to pray to Apollo before he attempts to string the bow:

Likewise, before he slays the first suitor, Odysseus again prays for Apollo's guidance and gaze to guide his arrows:

Also, as an additional thing, have Telemachus invoking Zeus, Athena and Apollo that he could see the suitors have their asses beat:

There's a lot of minimisation of Apollo's role in the Odyssey because it isn't as bright and showy as his role was in the Iliad but hey, even there people tend to minimise how truly present Apollo is for the duration of the war when they're doing adaptations. Within Epic, the stage is already more than set for both Apollo and Athena to be there at the advent of Odysseus' revenge but none of that matters if that's not the creator's intention, y'know?

They’re called shoot from the hip (sfth) and are @shootimpro on youtube, tiktok, instagram, facebook, x/twitter, Bluesky, as well as on linktree, patreon and ko-fi.

(Hi just a note that I’ve updated this post a bit :))

They’re London based but have done shows outside london like in Scotland (Edinburgh Fringe) and even to Spain. They want to hopefully go to other countries in the future too!!

From left to right they’re Sam, Tom, AJ and Luke :)))

Ok, so. They do improvised comedy and their shows have two halves (generally with a break in the middle) they play lots of short drama games in the first half and then improvise 20-30 minute (on average) plays in the second half, sometimes with another game at the end.

The plays are so much fun (they’ve got 43 of them up on youtube so far!! (< updated January 2025)) and they’ve also released three full specials (full shows) which you can find on their channel :)

For a few of the older ones (apart from the first one) they were filming on an iphone and just projecting their voices, so the the audio and image quality can be hard to deal with (but all their videos are subtitled by the AMAZING volunteer subtitlers!!!) the older videos are well worth watching, though!!!

They have SO MUCH CONTENT because during covid they did zoom-style improv shows with eachother and you can watch those as a patreon. (To find out what else you get with patreon go to my pinned post :))

They also have SO MANY VIDEOS that are just the regular public ones!!!! They upload short ones of the games and some 5-10min ones of the games too, as well as the long forms (plays)

so benny is not a nice guy. from what we see of him anyway. to be fair in most of the courier's encounters with him we are either being 1) shot, 2) confronting him after being shot, 3) reuniting with him in pursuit of the platinum chip surrounded by roman cosplaying fascists who are actively thinking about murdering them both. so its safe to say that the ben man isnt at his best or most charitable. maybe if we met benny in a different context he would be nicer. he's kind of nice to you if you fuck him (i'll get to that later). but at the same time i truly do not believe benny is an evil guy. its up to the player if their courier takes being shot in the head personally but i dont think it was personal for him. getting the chip was what he cared about, and to him, you were just a loose end that needed cleaning up. and i dont think being part of the rat pack bugsy siegel dress up post apocalypse mob really inclines you towards explaining your entire plan of ejecting the current autocrat so you can replace him and put a better system in place. shooting the courier is just much more convenient. (or it would have been if they stayed dead lol)

we never really find out exactly what benny's plans for new vegas were. we just know that he thought that it deserved more than being controlled by mr house. we don't know if benny would have done a better job himself, but since passing on his scheme to the courier in order to make sure vegas gets its freedom is what is important to benny during that final conversation at fortification hill, we could assume that he isn't doing it for personal gain or power. would he personally have benefited from deposing house? yes. but i dont think it was his sole or major motivation as for the black widow route. i know i've talked about this before but honestly one of the most fascinating things about the black widow encounter with benny is that if he survives the night, he wakes up first. he could have killed the courier while they slept, like they have the option to kill him in the middle of the night! but he doesnt! he sticks around long enough to write a note about going on a date and leaves them be. benny new vegas is definitely an antagonist. but is he evil? i dont think so. he is ruthless and manipulative and self-absorbed and a fucking liar. is he niceys? i think when it suits him he can be niceys but he is not a nice guy

And, because I am normal and don't think about these guys for hours every day, here's some backstory:

When Cross first joined, Killer actually took to him pretty quickly (Dust and Horror did not get warm welcomes). Which is to say he immediately started flocking to Cross to annoy him and compete with him on missions. Cross didn't have the benefit of knowing Killer already to see these were affectionate annoyances, so to him Killer was just some guy who had a problem and wouldn't leave him alone.

During that mission, Nightmare was calling a retreat when he put a hand to his chest and realised the heart locket was gone. Killer saw him looking all around frantically and had a good idea what was lost, since it was the one thing Cross would absolutely not part with since he joined. So, Killer ran back out towards the stars to look for it, because why learn self preservation now. It was the first thing to convince Cross that Killer actually was being (relatively) friendly, despite all the annoyances.
