this scene was always horrible to me okay. but especially as someone who had an addict parent. aside from the fact that the forced detox was SO wrong and fucked up to do, it was also the fact that Dean couldn't even stay in the room with him, that Sam was hallucinating and didn't have his brother to help him tell what was real and what isn't (like Dean does later with Hallucifer).

why could Dean not pull up a fucking chair. why could he not afford his brother the BASIC decency, after stripping away his autonomy and actively putting him in a life-threatening situation, to stay there with him. "oh because Dean would have given into his begging--" incorrect. Dean would not have gone out and brought back some demon blood just because Sam was desperate.

to me, Dean not staying in the room was more than just 'oh well we need Cas to help Sam escape' plot reasons, and what OP says about the Gadreel situation supports this. the focus of the panic room scene isn't on Sam's agony, aside from it being used to punish him, to show the 'consequences of his actions'. the focus was on Sam's poor loved ones, Dean specifically. the focus was on how badly his actions hurt them and now they have to suffer even more watching him because awww they're actually such good family 🥺 locking up Sam for his own good 🥺

and that's NOT to take away from the suffering that an addict's loved ones go through. my dad was a victim to his addiction, but my mom and i were victims of what he did. you can have compassion for everyone involved without minimizing anyone's pain or pointing fingers.

the panic room scene did not do that. and the 'metaphor for the entire plot of Supernatural' line is so true.

Ok but. Looking back at the scene where crowley is torturing gadreel in Sam’s body. And dean runs away because he can’t bear to see Sam’s body in agony (all because of a choice dean made). And instead of supervising Crowley torturing Sam’s body castiel goes to check on deans emotional state. That’s it that’s a metaphor for the entire plot of supernatural.
