When it comes to the Commander, he is not meant to have any fancy powers like in the movie or from Kamek. Magic in my universe is meant to be a very complicated practice. Something that would take years of studying and training to perfect. At least to the level where it can be used reliably in combat.. What I mean by this, is I don't think there's any magic related tricks that the Commander could "pick up" or be taught.. Magic also has everything to do with a magikoopa's gem staff thing, soo... <://

Though I suppose that the "superspeed flight" and the "self destruct" aspect could be incorporated into the Blue Parakoopa species somehow.. Perhaps due to the shape of their winds and flying styles, they could be incredibly fast. And Since they are so big and sturdy, perhaps they have been known to rocket towards their enemy and come crashing down onto/into them with all their might. Completely obliterating what ever they happen to hit. Like an explosion! XD Hmm.. I might just adopt that XDD Thanks for the idea!

Also he might make for a decent sparring partner if he was asked to do so! :0 though that's not his primary job..

First period hadn't even started yet and already you could tell that Dwayne was itching for the final bell. He sighed, folding his hands together and resting his chin on top of them. You watched him peer out from under his curtain of dark hair at a few students around you both exchanging cards, candies, and little stuffed toys. 

"Doing okay there, Dwayne?" you asked as you unloaded your textbook and your binder.

He threw you a sideways glance and replied blankly, "I'm a ray of sunshine." Whatever modicum of patience he usually had in school was drained entirely by Valentine's Day.

"Oh, yeah. You're looking especially chipper today."

This time, Dwayne turned to look at you fully with his brow furrowed.

"It's a joke."

"Have you seen what's been going on today?"

"Uh, yeah, it's a holiday," you shrugged.

"It's bullshit. It's an excuse for fucking candy and card companies to make a killing," he sneered. "Because if you don't buy your boyfriend or girlfriend a stupid piece of paper that says 'I love you' then you're obviously a bad person, right?"

You scoffed, "Not exactly."

That earned another scowl from Dwayne.

"Listen, I get what you mean. It can be superficial and overbearing sometimes, I guess." You struggled to conjure the right words to explain yourself in a way that Dwayne would understand, "But...it's nice sometimes, ya know? It's nice to have someone show that they thought about you."

"Please," Dwayne dismissed. "It's not about thought or care. It's all...bullshit social transactions that no one is gonna give a shit about after we graduate anyways. It's just...dumb."

Placing a hand over the top of your binder defensively, the more Dwayne spoke, the more you found a lump forming in your throat. It made it even harder to speak as you choked out, "Dumb?"

"Yeah. And...gross," he huffed with an air of stubbornness. He'd never been particularly fond of the holiday; the unnecessary drama of couples asking each other to be their Valentine and the gossip that came from rejections for days afterwards. But...you thought...

With a new wave of frustration, you flipped open the cover of your binder and pulled a card out from the inside flap. You slid it across the top of the table in Dwayne's direction. "Then there's a stupid card for you, Dwayne. Happy Valentine's Day," you added bitterly.

Dwayne froze. Already, the cover threw him off. There was the haunting phrase of the day written out in your handwriting and above it, a drawing of a bouquet of flowers in glitter gel pens. Slowly, he opened the card, finding more of your handwriting hiding inside.

I know this is super cliche. And you're probably going to roll your eyes at me when you read this. Promise me you won't hate me too much. Or at least promise me you'll spare me the embarrassment and forget this immediately after you read it. I just had to try at least once. But I really like you. Will you be my Valentine?

With your head hidden in your folded arms, you could only guess what you and Dwayne looked like to the rest of your classmates. Already, you were anticipating how that scene would get spun. Everyone talked about how you and Dwayne were bound to end up together, seeing as you're one of the only people that would willingly hang around with the reclusive guy. And one of the only people that he would actually let hang around him.

Your first thought after that was to think about Dwayne. He didn't like being the center of attention. Being talked about like this would be the most aggravating thing in the world. And god, it frustrated you that even when he was being a jerk, you still worried about him.

Then you felt a poke on your shoulder. You raised your head and found Dwayne, still looking at the card and tracing the flowers on the cover. But this time his hand was on the table, open with his palm facing up. Inviting you to grab it. Which you do, quickly.

"I'm sorry for what I said," he muttered.

You sniffed softly. "That's okay."

"I like the card."

"Thanks."

“And I'll be–" Dwayne paused. "I'll be your Valentine."

The exhilaration inside you flared so intensely that you couldn't help but squeeze his hand in return. You loudly yell at the worst point of the contraction, which is heart-wrenching and pierces through everything.

When the worst has died down, you're rushed to the medbay after a sincere thank you to Steve, and now it's time for you to officially start pushing.

The delivery goes relatively smoothly, and less than 6 hours later, you and Tony are holding your gorgeous baby boys in your arms after lots of screaming, squeezing, pushing, and tears.

''So, what are their names?'' the nurse asks, and the two of you look at each other; you knew their names early on.

The boys are basically carbon copies of Tony without the beard, and it is absolutely the cutest thing you've ever seen.

They have been with the two of you for almost 2 months now, and it is finally time to introduce them to the Avengers; you wanted to keep them to yourself just a little longer, and Tony was totally okay with that, for which you are still thankful.

''Are you all ready to meet our beautiful boys?'' you ask when you enter the living room, where all the Avengers are gathered. Loki is also there because he doesn't want to miss the chance to meet the extraordinary twins he's heard so much about.

You walk in with James, and Tony is holding Oliver. They're wearing the most adorable matching bear suits, making them look even cuddlier than they already are.

''Oh wow! They look exactly like Tony!'' Steve says as he walks over to see the boys.

''Did you want to hold one of them?'' you ask, and Steve's eyes light up.

''If that isn't too much, I would love to,'' he says, and Tony hands him Oliver.

''Bucky? Did you maybe want to hold him?'' you ask as you walk over with James, already planning ahead for the name reveal.

''Are you- Are you sure? With the arm and all...'' he says, and you nod.

''As long as you follow my instructions, nothing can go wrong, I promise,'' you say, and he walks over, albeit still very carefully.

When the two super soldiers are holding them, you walk over to Tony and look with nothing but adoration at your boys and the two men holding them.

''So, Steve is holding Oliver right now,'' you start, and they all gasp at the beautiful name.

''It fits him,'' Steve says as he walks up and down with him, and he instantly falls asleep in Steve's arms.

''And Bucky, please don't drop him when I tell you his name. I think you'll figure out very soon why I wanted you to hold him,'' you say with a grin like the Cheshire Cat.

''Right now, you're holding our wonderful son called James,'' Tony says, and Bucky's head snaps up to both of you.

''Though we didn't name him after you - I'm sorry for that - we still thought you should be the first to hold him,'' you say, and he gets tears in his eyes from the thoughtfulness.

When he gives James back to you, he whispers a soft thank you.

''Don't worry about it, Bucky. I know it's probably something you won't ever have, so I thought it would only be fair that you would get to hold him first,'' you say, and he gives you a side hug and a kiss on your head.

''You're the best,'' he says, and you just can't stop smiling.

Steve, however, won't let go of Oliver just yet.

''Steve, you know he has to eat at some point, right?'' you joke, but he is enamored of the little guy.

''I know, but I don't want to let little Oliver go just yet,'' he says, smiling and cooing at the little boy in his arms.

''Ready for bath time?'' you ask Tony as he walks over; he just prepared the bath for James and Oliver. The two of you have found a perfect routine where one eats while the other gets a bath and vice versa.

ill also go ahead and answer your questions because i can! very easily clarify on them!

the color: actually, being bright red and pink is actually very common for deep sea animals, due to the way light works at depth! its why i decided miranda was abyssal, because that felt like the most natural way to explain why she's pink, since it's such an uncommon color in nature.

basically, different colors of light have different lengths! red is the shortest wavelength of light, and blue is the longest. water might be clear, but there's a lot of water in the ocean, and the more water you add, the more it filters out light - which is why the bottom of a pool might be dark and shady, but if you hold a little of the water in your hands there's no shade. the ocean is a lot deeper than a pool, and so it gets darker as you go down, but because it's also clear, it doesn't filter out all that light at the same rate.

red, being the shortest wavelength of light, gets filtered out first, so red often gets quickly darker the deeper down you go, until it's completely black! camouflage is dependent on the environment, so their color and brightness has to match the background, but it also depends on the light that's hitting the animal. it's why fawns have dappled spots, or animals might have black stripes, so they can mimic the light of their environment. and when your environment has no red light, well... red's a pretty good color to be!

because of this, a lot of animals in the deep sea can't actually see red either, which is doubly the reason why you might want to be red! think of it like tigers, and how ungulates often can't see their orange, making them look just about the same color as the foliage around them when they're hunting! miranda might stick out on land, but that's just because we aren't seeing her in the environment she's made for, where she blends in with everything else around her as much as a pure black animal.

(it's also why her bioluminescence is blue - blue is the longest wavelength of light, and the one most animals can see at that depth. if she lights up, then she wants to be seen, and she can even alter her silhouette to appear larger or smaller or breaking it up into multiple shapes if she needs to. it's why her tapetum lucidum is blue when light's shone on it, because there is blue light to be seen at depth, it's just very dim!)

(this is also why giant squid are bright red, and why the stoplight loosejaw fish is so special! the latter actually produces its own red light, and can see red light, which means that it has a secret light that won't reveal where it is but will reveal to it where its prey is!)

food: this is something that depends a lot, because there are actually multiple different species of merfolk, which is mostly my fault because i don't always feel like i communicate this the best. they're all slightly different in how they evolved to capture prey, with abyssals in particular being fuckoff huge ambush predators that attack from below, and others being shallower-water hunters or more adapted for smaller, faster prey - but they all evolved from an ancestor with a fairly consistent prey-capture method.

in short, all merfolk are ancestrally evolved to hunt whales and other large prey items, with all the extant species still holding at least a degree of this. primarily, they were ambush predators who were good at getting in close to their prey before a sudden burst of speed. they would work together in close-knit groups (one of the big pressures for their increasing socialization and larger brains, to coordinate such groups) to all mob a single prey item at once, hitting with force to cause sudden trauma, and then using their claws, double-thumbs, back feet, and mouths to hold onto their prey and refuse to be dislodged. they'd repeatedly claw and use their strong bites and massive heads to rip deeply into their prey, causing further massive trauma and shock, and if that failed, bleeding their prey to death.

think of it like the raptor prey restraint model, just further taking advantage of the fact that they were underwater, where no one else has hands that could potentially rip them off. being smaller and somewhat less-optimized for marine life compared to things like sharks and whales and large fish worked for them, because they had a novel adaptation that allowed them to take advantage of things no one else could, and the numbers to make up for it. this is, likewise, why they never lost their hands and fully developed flippers, instead making their limbs as flipper-like as possible to make up for it.

then as time went on and certain populations became separated from each other, they adapted for slightly different niches, but all remain fairly closely related to each other as a genus.

in the modern day, most merfolk don't really "hunt" for all of their meals, at least not in the same way that we might think. don't get me wrong, they still absolutely hunt and it's a larger part of their lives than it is for most humans, but they have options.

mostly, the merfolk theory for their relationship with nature is to invite it in. this is not to say they aren't controlling and pruning it, but they do live underwater, and it's far harder to keep animals out than it is on land, so merfolk accepted it and worked with it. they'll work to promote growth around their buildings and where they live, fostering the growth of sea grass and algae and coral and other sessile animals, encouraging them to set down and grow in these areas, and they'll then let more wild animals move in, further encouraged by these natural sources of food and shelter, on top of merfolk working even further to encourage them in. they serve as a functional cleanup crew for the merfolk in these settlements, being allowed to eat anything that merfolk might drop or go to waste, and even moreso might be purposefully fed at times, or have specific homes for them built. merfolk will keep encouraging them and taking care of them until they become a biorich hotspot, creating unique oasises for wildlife to live alongside merfolk.

however, this isn't just a free-for-all, persay. merfolk will also purposefully prune these populations and control how they form, often removing "problem" animals and encouraging certain behaviors which makes it easier for these populations to live alongside merfolk, not viewing them as a threat, but also not viewing them as an opportunity either. they will directly shape how these areas grow and cultivate them on a physical level, often using them as an easy shortcut to literally grow their settlements and buildings. but they will also harvest from these populations and selectively breed them, until their cities and towns act as massive public gardens full of food to be caught, picked, and eaten at any time

as there are also a lot of (very politically powerful) nomadic groups, they also do this, albeit not always so directly. they'll have specific shoals or "runs" of fish that they will follow behind and take care of, managing as they move through the ocean in accordance with the seasons. this is where the whales still factor in, because the nomadic groups will also take care of the whales, purposefully keeping an eye on their pods and taking care of them and, when the time comes, being choosy and particular in which whale they select at any given time to be hunted, harvested, and eaten.

(there's also the way in which food is distributed and managed throughout the merkingdom, since some food is indeed shipped and moved throughout the different areas, but that's a different story for another time and i've talked enough)

OKAY SO when we were kinda in the situation phase we would always be calling each other on the phone even if we had nothing to talk about... so like we would do homework on the phone and we would be doing chores while we're on call... that type of thing!! we didn't really "flirt" per se, but we would go out of our way to talk to each other and spend time together!! ONE THING THOUGH is whenever we would meet up irl, he would compliment my hair and my outfit solely because he knew it made me flustered 😭 he would do lots of things just to get little flustered reactions out of me, so that was the extent of the 'flirting', since i'm not really flirtatious!!

Fanfic assumption: You believe very strongly in restorative justice/reparation/'redemption.' Redemption arcs are a really fun thing to play around with in fiction in general, and especially fanfiction, but you put so much thought and care and meaning and power into them in your writing. And they're not easy, they're really, really hard but that makes them ring very, very true. A lot of people say they believe in redemption or want to, but the desire for punitive justice and vengeance are very natural and very human, and believing in restorative justice and reparations can be incredibly hard to reckon deeply with and reconcile with the concept of 'fairness'. My daughter started reading TDAAC after I suggested it to her. She loved it up until she got to Philip’s leaving at which point she slammed the laptop shut in a fit of pre-teen rage. I asked her what was wrong and she demanded to know why I would suggest that she read it, it made her feel bad for Philip and she didn’t want to feel bad for Philip. I explained to her that a good author/artist can make you feel sympathy even for characters you don’t like, to which she shouted, “THEN TELL THE AUTHOR THEY ARE TOO GOOD AT THEIR JOB!” Now she is upstairs loudly blaring My Chemical Romance and I am in the living room cackling.

Philip is a complex af character I will die on this hill. He's a bastard (derogatory) but his life was still tragic aaaaaa

I love how from after when he asked her to stay and she did, they don't need words, long explanations, passionate declarations - they just are together. They are so compatible with each other and trust each other so much (not to mention their actions speak for themselves). They are back to their warm and teasing selves, which is even more remarkable in Yoon Sung's case - even with the stress of Undaddy's death threats, the revenge plan being complicated, and all the stuff with his mother, he can still bask in her presence and be uncomplicatedly happy. I love that he bandages her shoulder (seriously, they will have matching scars - aaaaaaah) and that she lets him, and the way he teases her, turning into a kindergarten level dork. Yoon Sung only really laughs and is happy when she's around. He really needs her not just because he loves her, but she's vital to his functioning as a normal human being, really. And I love Nana teasing him right back and the warm space they have together.

I love that while he let her into his heart, he doesn't want to let her into his justice gig and that she overrides it matter of factly, telling him she won't let him go out and do all the dangerous stuff himself. And his face - because he's always been alone up to now except for ahjusshi (who is not the most self-reliant person out there). The man he viewed as his father wrecked his life, threatened the lives of his mother and OTP, and is now considering killing him if he gets in the way of revenge. And yet here is Nana, who loved him even when she believed it was one-sided, who saved his life and almost died even when she should have ignored him or hated him, when he did his best to drive her away. And she is basically saying 'you protected me but I am going to protect you.'

He's like another person when she's around, it's like she travels with her own portable sunshine. The fact that they can be like this - she with her family's tragic death and the injustice of it all and poverty, and he with his brutal upbringing full of physical and emotional abuse and lies. It's a complete miracle. (Like the bit where he buys her clothes and you can tell his giddiness at being able to spoil her (heeee, when he guesses proper sizes by measuring them against his chest). Of course, he totally does his usual foot-in-mouth 'should be compliment but turns into insult' thing but now that she knows the truth about him and his feelings and everything, she can tell the adoration underneath and just teases him back.) To be fair, he's got himself a woman who is admiring of his big planting skills so...

Hair-washing scene is just aaaaaa. She can't wash her hair due to her wound, so he washes it for her. There is something amazingly swoonworthy in hair washing in dramas for me (see my similarly incoherent reaction to a similar scene in Thank You.) It's such a menial task and yet such a caretaker one, such a gesture of care. To see him do it so giddily because that means he can touch her hair and help her and take care of her - is just… And he's so tender and thorough and then just starts massaging her scalp (!!!!) and she starts playing with the soap and then shortly after they are in an all-out soap-suds fight and both are laughing with complete abandon actually acting their age (have you ever seen Yoon Sung this happy? Never.)

Their successful heist is another example of his actually being happy having someone with him - it's not just duty or w/e, he's actually having fun. The three of them are a perfect team and so happy and awesome (I love that that Nana can take on her share of bad guys in a fight, and that they plan things and don't randomly dash off).

Afterwards is also just fun for once. I love when she chants she wants fried chicken and our angsty masked avenger who was trained to be a killer from the cradle just giggles back at her. They are such kids.

And the normalcy of grocery shopping, like normal people (and the secret to getting vegetable hater YS to eat them is apparently to declare him Nana's husband.)

And then, as they walk out happy, she goes to pick up a tomato that rolled off the cart, the doors lock YS out, the lights goes out, and she's trapped in the underground garage with a psycho Undaddy coming towards her on a motorcycle, looking every inch prepared to carry out his earlier decision to kill her (and Nana knows he's capable - she figured out this ep what he's capable of). And all YS can do is watch. GL, Undaddy! Maybe someone should show Undaddy what YS did to the thug that shot her.

and oh listen if you're loving that side you have no idea. you have no idea. that side is Going Places i have a whole ass spinoff series planned about That Specific Leafling Olimar for reasons that are not immediately clear at present but which Will Become Clear. i want to start working on catch/cradle (the first spinoff sequel) SO BAD but i have to finish DLD first and i have had so much going on recently to contest that RIP. but!!! catch/cradle is what i have been referring to in the comments as "the sequel I would never forgive myself if I didn't write it" and for very good reason. that's Going Places. there are Developments. there are Twists. there is Incredibly Detailed And Somewhat Plausible Medical Science. but most of all there is Growth, In All Forms. and all things that grow do live.
