The CIEE TEFL TESOL Course was organized and thorough. CIEE TEFL review, submitted by Melia. THE CIEE TEFL TESOL course was organized and thorough, and the website was easy to navigate. It’s a study-as-you-go course which means you can start and stop where you last left off and there is no one there to hassle you because you weren’t online at a specific time. Because it was self-paced, I could…

Personal rant about my life/future/existential crisis below
I finished my last uni assignment a month ago and got my graduation invitation last week (I’ll be formally graduating in December). I’m also completing a TEFL certificate and have been looking at working as an aupair or English language teacher overseas after I graduate. While doing my degree I’ve been working two different part time jobs with kids, one of the businesses I own, and I’ve been intending to see the year out before applying for work overseas, but, I also unfortunately live with two old fashioned parents who believe anything but a 9-5 isn’t a job.
I left my room to have a conversation and now I’ve been threatened into applying for a long term legal admin job, despite the fact they know I’m planning to apply for work overseas from around Christmas time onwards once my passport’s renewed, and so despite being unable to begin a new job until Christmas time I’m now debating how to botch a job interview. I have been planning on staying in this country for eight more months maximum and if I have to stay in this house with them for twelve more months I’m going to need a shovel to dig my own grave (dramatic threat, not serious).
So, I had been planning to leave the country by June but now that has been moved up so I can escape this house. I am writing my aupair profile and making rapid progress on my TEFL certificate since god forbid I wait until I have actually graduated before applying for jobs that need a degree. I know I sound dramatic but considering they told me last week they fully support me in going overseas as either a nanny or teacher in the next few months but now I’ve been very harshly ordered to apply and work as a legal admin for at least a year effective immediately I’ve been a little blindsided.
I had a plan to continue as I have been to get money together while applying for overseas work and they knew this, but now they’re drunk and angry with me for existing (nothing new). I wouldn’t mind them asking me about jobs and the rest if they didn’t tell me every decision I’ve ever made in my entire life is terrible and then ignoring anything I’ve ever been passionate about.
Being almost twenty two and living with two alcoholic parents because of a rent crisis and a little sister has slowly given me deep set anger issues to rival Dean Winchester. I’ve had a solid plan and a timeline and now they’re trying to get me to throw it out because I am not at this moment working a full time job. I’ve been paid in advance for the work I’m doing now so I have to see this year out regardless but they simply don’t care. I almost went no contact with them in 2021 after I quit a gap year job that left me in tears every day and began online university and god knows it’ll likely happen once I leave the country. I’ll almost certainly be no contact with my dad regardless, but despite my mum supporting me just last week she always finds a way to crush my spirit and any self confidence I have when I least expect it when she’s drinking. I truly believe that in five years my sister, my grandmother and one aunt will be the only family I still have contact with. She’s known what my plan is but basically told me that I’ll end up stuck in this town for the rest of my life unless I take this long term local position (contradictory but whatever) despite knowing what my plans are and then just about threatening me when I tried to tell her what I’m planning on doing once I’ve finished this language certificate.
It sounds like I’m whinging a fair bit but I’ve spent years micromanaging this entire family’s emotions and looking after my teenage sister because my parents are too busy drinking to ignore the fact that they should be divorcing. The emotional labor is killing me and I need out. It seems like it’s gonna be sooner rather than later even though I won’t have the money I want behind me, but if I can get work overseas and have enough in the bank for a plane ticket I’m taking it. I just need to renew my passport.

My TEFL Journey In a nutshell
Alhamdulillah, by the grace of Almighty, in the 2nd last year (2021), I have passed the 198 hours Level 5 TEFL certification course (168 guided hours + Teaching English online 30 hours) from The TEFL Academy. For those, who might want to know, Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) involves teaching English abroad or online where English is not the primary language. TEFL educators can work for international and global schools, foreign companies, international organizations and associations, and internationally recognized universities, just to name a few. You can read more about my adventures in Fahadventure.
I have been thinking about doing this since 2018, just after my Graduation from the Institute of Business Administration, Dhaka University (IBA, DU), Bangladesh, but could not really focus much as I got involved in corporate culture, after joining an event management company, namely Asiatic Experiential Marketing Limited. Later on, in May,2019, I joined a locally reputed bank, BRAC Bank where I continued to work for two and a half years. In the meantime, the overall lockdown phases during 2020 and 2021 finally came as a blessing among all those office workloads, few trips and some personal hassles which motivated me once again to work from home and pursue my dreams. This certificate is just like a passport to travel the world while I'll start working on attaining the visa i.e jobs abroad once it reopens. For now, I am exploring the online possibilities to start with. Check out the vacancies for better exploration.
Just after leaving the job of my previous organization, BRAC Bank, I got the opportunity to join a global platform within few months, named as "Native Camp" where my everyday work nowadays involves teaching and talking people online, mostly from China, Japan & Taiwan and I can't even explain how happy I am right now to have those sessions and exchange our thoughts with fun while doing so. I am also an avid learner and traveler with interest in knowing cultures and norms from all around the globe. I have worked for a very short time in this period with Lingua Roma, a global teaching company where I had to work with South Africans, Russians, French, Kenyans etc. Apart from that, while traveling in various parts of India and Thailand, I resided in the local hostels and houses to mingle with mixed races and know more about them. You can have a look at my teaching profile.
Being a TEFL tutor is a great way to build transferable skills, like communication, creativity, adaptability, critical thinking, problem solving, and leadership etc. It's been a tiring journey with lots of obstacles since I didn't know who to connect with for suggestions; specially anyone from my country. So, I had to look for international blogs, knock random people and gain idea on this. I would humbly request to expand my knowledge if anyone wants to know & explore this beautiful world together. I'll be writing other detailed posts about my journey and other tefl course online, tefl jobs in the coming days. For now, you can look the official website if it fits your budget. Please keep me in your prayers so that I can smoothly advance towards my dream journey, not just by sitting at a corner of the office. Thank you all. Soooo excited! 🤩

And don't be too het up if your life plan changes over time: My highschool senior year I wanted to be a lawyer, my school said "Ok, your research project this year is 'what do the people who have the career you want actually do?'." I graduated deciding that while I didn't know WHAT I wanted to be-it wasn't a lawyer.
I took a gap year to earn money for college, fell in with some artists and decided I wanted to do something in fine art. Went to get my Associates at a close-ish community college. Discovered photography, fell in love with film and the darkroom.
Decided I was going to pursue fine art photgraphy. Got my Associates and transferred my credits to an arts college a couple hours away. Spent a year at that college. Come summer, had a health issue-dropped out of college. Had the realization I wouldn't be able to support myself easily in fine art with my health issue.
Decided to pursue a business degree in management since my fast food job made that really easy to pursue. Had a manager that made me realize I hated fast food.
Worked a housekeeping job for a year. Got told "I was just a baby" by the nicest 80 year old I'd ever met after I told her I didn't know where I wanted to go with my career.
Decided to go back to college for an English degree. Went back into fast food at a different place since housekeeping wouldn't work for my class schedule. [Thought about joining the military as an officer once i got my degree, thankfully my health issue wouldn't pass MEPS.] Got my BA 8 years after I'd graduated from high school.
Decided to go back into fast food management while I got my TEFL certification so I could go to Japan or South Korea. Watched as my cohort's job got frozen due to covid.
Decided to stay at my fast food job until covid blew over.
Gave up after a year and decided to do freelance proofreading while I tried to get a fulltime job in the publishing industry. Got a transcription job that didn't pay minimum wage.
Had a health issue, went back to fast food for 3-4 months.
Got a job that paid minimum wage while being trained in a low code tech stack in exchange for working for them 2 years.
Got my contract with them bought out by one of their customers. Am now working as a Python backend developer. ... It's been a wild 14 years. fuck. it's been 14 years since my high school graduation. wow.
every year we have to say it

The English Language opens doors to international education, and career opportunities, and fosters connections across cultures. Whether you aim to speak English for business purposes, travel the world confidently, or improve your communication skills, enrolling in an English Language institute can be a game-changer.
But with many English Language institutes vying for your attention, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. This comprehensive guide will equip you with the knowledge and steps to select the perfect English Language institute to meet your specific needs and learning goals.
1. Define Your Learning Objectives
The first step on your English Language learning journey is to identify your goals. Are you aiming to:
Become fluent in spoken English and converse confidently in everyday situations.
Enhance your English speaking course skills for professional settings like presentations, meetings, or negotiations.
Solidify your grammar foundation and writing techniques to produce clear and error-free written English Language.
Prepare for an English Language proficiency test like TOEFL, IELTS, or OET.
Understanding your aspirations will guide your search for an English Language institute that offers targeted courses aligned with your specific objectives.
2. Explore Course Options and Formats
English Language institutes offer a diverse range of English Language courses to cater to various learning styles and schedules. Here’s a breakdown of some popular formats:
General English courses: These comprehensive programs provide a well-rounded foundation in all aspects of the English Language, including grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Business English courses: Designed for professionals, these English courses equip learners with the English Language skills needed to succeed in the workplace, covering topics like business communication, negotiation, writing techniques like emails and reports.
Conversation English courses: Focused on spoken English, these courses provide ample opportunities to practice English speaking and listening in a dynamic environment.
Exam preparation courses: If you’re aiming for an English Language proficiency test, these specialized courses offer targeted instruction and practice tests to help you achieve your desired score.
Online English Language courses: For those seeking flexibility, online English Language courses provide the convenience of learning from anywhere, anytime.
3. Consider Class Size and Learning Methodology
The ideal class size depends on your learning style. Smaller English Language classes, typically with 5-10 students, allow for more personalized attention from the instructor and increased opportunities to participate actively. Larger classes, on the other hand, can foster a vibrant learning environment and encourage interaction among classmates.
Another crucial factor is the English Language Institute’s teaching methodology. Some institutes employ traditional methods that emphasize grammar drills and rote memorization, while others utilize more communicative approaches that prioritize interactive activities and real-world application of English Language skills. Consider which approach best aligns with your learning preferences and desired outcomes.
4. Evaluate Faculty Qualifications and Experience
The quality of your English Language learning experience hinges heavily on the expertise of your instructors. Look for institutes with faculty who possess:
TEFL or TESOL certification: These certifications demonstrate the instructor’s qualifications and training in teaching English Language to non-native speakers.
Experience teaching English Language to learners of your background: Instructors familiar with the challenges faced by students from your native language can provide more targeted support and effective teaching strategies.
Enthusiasm and passion for teaching: An instructor who is passionate about the English Language and enjoys teaching can significantly enhance your learning motivation and overall experience.
5. Assess Facilities and Learning Resources
A well-equipped English Language institute can greatly contribute to a positive learning environment. Consider factors like:
Modern classrooms with interactive whiteboards, multimedia tools, and comfortable seating.
A well-stocked library with a diverse range of English Language learning materials, books, newspapers, and audiobooks.
A language lab equipped with audio-visual resources for enhancing listening and pronunciation skills.
Access to online learning platforms that complement classroom learning and provide additional practice opportunities.
6. Prioritize Location and Schedule
The location and schedule of the English Language course Institute should be convenient for you. Consider institutes that are easily accessible by public transportation or close to your workplace or residence.
Furthermore, choose an institute that offers course schedules that align with your availability. Whether you prefer morning, afternoon, evening, or weekend classes, ensure the institute caters to your learning rhythm.
7. Inquire About Additional Support Services
A supportive English Language institute can make a world of difference in your learning journey. Look for institutes that provide:
Academic advisors who can guide you in selecting the most appropriate English course and monitor your progress.
Career counselling services to help you leverage your newfound English Language skills to achieve your career goals. Opportunities for cultural exchange to immerse yourself in the English language and gain a deeper understanding of the culture.
8. Explore Cost and Value
English Language courses vary in cost depending on the factors mentioned above, such as English course duration, class size, location, and institute reputation. While cost is certainly a consideration, prioritize the value you receive for your investment.
A higher-priced course might offer smaller class sizes, experienced instructors, and a wider range of learning resources, ultimately leading to faster progress and better outcomes.
English4All Academy exemplifies this principle. We offer a comprehensive range of English Language courses at competitive prices, ensuring you get the best value for your money.
9. Leverage Online Reviews and Recommendations
The internet can be a valuable resource for researching English Language institutes. Read online reviews on platforms like Google and Facebook to gain insights from previous students about their experiences. Additionally, reach out to friends, colleagues, or acquaintances who have learned English at an institute for their recommendations.
10. Schedule a Placement Test and Consultation
Most reputable English Language institutes offer placement tests to assess your current English Language proficiency level. This helps them recommend the most suitable English course for your needs. Additionally, schedule a consultation with an advisor to discuss your learning goals, preferred learning style, and any queries you may have. This personalized approach allows you to make an informed decision about whether the institute is the right fit for you.
Conclusion
The decision to invest in learning the English Language is a wise one. It opens doors to academic pursuits, career advancement, and a wider world of communication and connection. By following the comprehensive guide outlined above, you’ll be empowered to make an informed decision and select the English Language institute that perfectly aligns with your learning objectives, budget, and schedule.

Can you please tell us more about how you became an English teacher in Japan? And the whole process. Thank you 😊
Great question anon!
I actually decided I was going to aim for this job when I was about seven, my aunt and uncle used to teach in Fukuyama, and they'd send me letters every few months telling me about it, back then I was absolutely obsessed with getting letters so hot super excited for it.
The main thing that most teaching companies wanted, from what I found, was proof that you have a native level English understanding and a university degree, they entirely don't care what you study, just that you can show them you finished.
Some companies also ask for a TEFL or TESOL qualification, but they're relatively easy to do, I got mine through a six month online course run through theTEFLacademy.
After I got my assorted certificates in line, it was about the same as hunting for any other job, googling around and researching the companies and their reputations. I currently teach with a company called Amity, they're one of the bigger companies in Japan, and their foreign teacher support is really solid, they were thorough in their interviews too.
The whole interview process took about three months, I had to complete an online quiz essentially, normal job app style, then they wanted a video of me speaking and singing a nursery rhyme to judge my speaking style and/or accent. After that was a few video interviews and a short (maybe fifteen minute) model lesson based on a loose prompt to see how you are at lesson planning. The biggest issue I had with any of this phase was honestly just the scheduling, because the hiring office was in America and I was in Australia, all of my interviews happened between 3am and 7am lol.
After getting my contract offer things moved pretty fast, I applied for my working visa and got my passport, then I just had to pack everything into storage or into my suitcases and fly over. Here in Japan the company collected me from the airport, shipped my luggage ahead to my school so I could take it to my apartment, and then I did a two week training course with all the other incoming teachers. Most companies will teach you absolutely everything you need to know to do the job, we had lessons on business terminology, what their strategy for selling lessons was, they even taught us the different ways we had to talk to students, parents, coworkers, and assorted levels of superiors, and we relentlessly drilled lesson plans and activities.
After the two week bootcamp they sent us off to our schools, our managers helped us register our residency at city hall and we got a further week of shadowing a teacher at our school, meeting our students and seeing the lessons in real life.
And that was that, I've been here for just under a year and a half now and I have to say, it's the best choice I've ever made in my life. I miss my family often, but it's really fulfilling, if difficult, work. It can seem overwhelming but honestly so long as you do with a reputable, established company and keep your documents in line the process isn't that difficult, even with my ADHD and anxiety getting in the way, it was really smooth.
Sorry for the giant essay, I'd be happy to answer questions! I hope this was helpful for you!
