TDP takes ‘tonsuring’ of Dalit case to the notice of NHRC
TDP general secretary Varla Ramaiah on Thursday complained to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) against the YSRCP leaders and the police for “beating up and tonsuring a Dalit youth in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh,” and urged it to take cognisance of the “unchecked atrocities” being committed against Dalits in the State.
In a letter to the NHRC Chairman, Mr. Ramaiah sought…

via Today Bharat nbsp; Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders in Andhra Pradesh have alleged that harassment by the police and the ruling YSRCP led to the death of their party worker in Nellore district. The man, identified as Gandikota Karthik, a booth level-worker for the TDP, killed himself earlier this week. Nara Lokesh, TDP General Secretary and son of party chief Chandrababu Naidu, visited the family of Karthik, in Dagadarthi, on Friday to offer his condolences. ldquo;I visited the family of TDP worker Karthik, who took his life due to harassment from YSRCP leaders and the local police. The party will stand by Karthikrsquo;s family, rdquo; Lokesh tweeted, adding that he would stand by the family in fighting for justice for Karthik. కార్తీక్ కుటుంబానికి పార్టీ అండగా ఉంటుంది. pic.twitter.com/WanPEmfFIW mdash; Lokesh Nara (@naralokesh) November 15, 2019Speaking to the media, Lokesh alleged that more than 600 TDP workers have been attacked across the state by YSRCP workers since Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy came to power in May. Claiming that even TDP sympathisers were not spared, Lokesh mentioned the controversy in Guntur districtrsquo;s Palnadu region. Following a complaint by TDP leaders, a team from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had visited villages in the Palnadu region, where the TDP had claimed that party workers and supporters had been forcefully displaced from their homes due to political violence. The NHRC team visited villages in the region surrounding Pinnelli, Atmakur, Jangameswarpadu and Punugupadu. ldquo; The Chief Minister's only achievement since he came to power was to bring the NHRC for an inquiry, rdquo; Lokesh said. He also added that TDP leaders were being targeted, as cases had been booked against at least 18 leaders, including Varla Ramaiah, Yarapathineni Srinivasa Rao and Atchannaidu Kinjarapu. Speaking to the media earlier on Wednesday, former minister and TDP leader Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy alleged that Karthik was driven to take his life due to harassment by the Sub-Inspector of Dagadarthi. ldquo; The SI would beat up Karthik regularly and harassed him, driving him to suicide. He had a small roadside hotel which had been evicted after the YSRCP came to power. He had even approached the High Court for a stay in the matter. This is the case not just in Dagadarthi but also in Muthukur and Podalakur. Police behaviour has been really bad, causing mental harassment to people, rdquo; Somireddy said. Police deny allegations Later on Friday, Nara Lokesh met with Nellore Rural District Superintendent of Police Raghava Reddy and submitted a representation, seeking action against the police officers allegedly involved in the case. దానికి డీఎస్పీ అంగీకరించారు. pic.twitter.com/JTHKplZBLe mdash; Lokesh Nara (@naralokesh) November 15, 2019However, the police denied the allegations and said that Karthik had taken his life, due to personal reasons. In a statement, the police said, "Based on the complaint from the mother of the deceased, a case had been registered in Dagadarthi police station and an investigation had begun." In the statement, the Rural DSP said, "We conducted an autopsy and all the family members have stated that he killed himself due to family problems and property dispute and because he had separated from his wife. After following due process, we have handed the body back to the family." "With regard to this matter, we have appointed an Inspector rank officer to conduct an impartial probe. Irrespective of who the accused person is, we will take necessary action once we acquire the required evidence. But in this case, few persons have brought in party differences and are trying to draw political mileage, by creating differences within the family," the police added.
