Poppy’s Reaping
Poppy was wearing a yellow patterned dress, except the yellow was so old and faded now that it seemed a dingy green. She hummed and scrounged around her tiny room for something to make the dress pop. It went without saying that she didn’t especially like the Reaping, but she did so enjoy the chance to dress up. There was precious little reason for anyone in the Districts to.
Her older sister, Tansee, pounded on the door with a heavy fist, telling her to hurry up. Had she dawdled so long already? Poppy barely had time to find her lucky namesake flower—carefully dried and preserved—and pin it, lopsided, on the front of her dress. The flower looked out of place in industrialized Five. She only vaguely remembered where it might have come from. Back when Daddy had the ability to attend such functions.
As the two of them hastening through uneven streets, Tansee cut an intimidating figure. A true Career. Poppy had never had much to worry about Reaping. There were always plenty of those that were eager for glory victory promised, not realizing how many else had to lose.
What passing bells for these who die as cattle? A grim line for a grim day.
Still, the abundance of volunteers meant that she had been kept from a bovine fate of her own. And so far, she’d been able to beg her sister out of volunteering.
The Quarter Quell was different.
But even then, the chance of her or her sister being Reaped were so low. Surely, the odds must be… what? Poppy had never been very good at math.
______________________________________________________________
Her face was splotchy from crying. Tears had dried on her cheeks long ago, and their salty residue was beginning to itch. Poppy whimpered miserably, now that no one was around to hear it. After they’d read her name, her legs simply refused to move. She had been hauled, bodily, up onto the stage by Peacekeepers. There, while the other names were called, she began to cry. Fat, wet tears that were impossible to hide.
Weak, she thought. The voice sounded like Tansee. You’ve always been.
The next few days were similarly a blur. She was asked a lot of questions, which she answered honestly. She tried to be light and bubbly for the cameras. On the very slim chance she was elected, no one would sponsor someone who was morose and cried at the Reaping.
The Justice Building they were kept in was square, utilitarian, even in the Capitol. Poppy traced a finger along the frame of her bed. Hard lines, straight edges. She would find her justice here. And then she could go home.
She wished she could remember who else had been Reaped. They were all being held separately. Whenever Poppy tried to watch their interviews, her eyes would slide over the screen and she would start picking at her skin until the Peacekeepers told her to stop. Merrit Greenside was here, she knew. One of Tansee’s closest friends and training partners. Answering questions seemed no problem for him. He was as delightful as ever.
Poppy’s only moment of substance was the final day: when she chose to read a poem. Not one from her well-worn, dog-eared book of them back home. One that she had written herself. A poem about hope.
And then it was over. Poppy was whisked back to District Five, where, above the Reaping square, power lines hung so thick in the sky that the announcer barely had enough light to read her slips. Poppy stood stiffly and fidgeted under the eye of the nation, trying for her part to catch the eye of her mother and wishing more than anything that she could give her a hug.
Poppy still wanted to see more of the world, but to be in the Capitol was to die. Why was it that those were her only two options?
A hard elbow jabbed into Poppy’s side, rudely startling her from her reverie. It was Alyss, a sinewy Career and one of her fellow ten selected from Five. “Get the hell up there,” she hissed. Her eyes promised danger if Poppy didn’t comply.
She was very scary, and Poppy was quick to oblige. It was only then that the announcer’s voice finally, finally pierced her ears.
‘Poppy Fitch.’
She had been elected.
Poppy’s throat went dry and her legs began wobbling like a newborn calf’s. She would walk this time to her fate. Even her demise. Stepping out into the aisle, Poppy promptly rolled her ankle and fell to her hands and knees.
You don’t get a second chance to be weak. Your life is at stake, some part of her realized, and Poppy surprised herself how quickly and composedly she stood again.
Why did they choose me? I’m not strong. I’ve never won anything. Was it my poem?
Faces were turning to stare at her as she walked down the aisle without further incident. Her friends, neighbors, people she had known all her life and strangers, but all lit up with the strangest thing: interest. In her.
In that exact moment, Poppy didn’t have any room for fear. No, instead she felt… seen.

The Reaping
Merrit was always up early to train, he had little much else to do and he felt training on his own always was a bit more pure, a bit more productive. He was a show-off, he knew that about himself, and when other people were around him he always put a bit of flair into things. What was the use in being good at something, if you couldn’t enjoy yourself?
Merrit placed the staff back on the rack in the training room, he could see the crimson sunlight starting peek through, the rays tracing their way through the frosted glass. He had a few hours left before the reaping. He packed the rest of his things, took a quick shower and started down the path towards Tansee’s place. Tansee was Merrit’s closest friend - he was popular and well liked but Tansee and him had always been closer than most. From the moment they had been matched up in training they had been almost inseparable, which some considered odd because in many ways they were very much the opposite of one another. Merrit was flashy, chaotic and a jester whereas Tansee was efficient, calculating and serious. Perhaps they were just two sides of the same coin
Merrit made the jog to Tansee’s in good time, the warmth of the dawn sun on his back as he ran. It wasn’t awfully far, a few miles, and Merrit barely broke much of a sweat. “Tansee! Get that mighty fine ass of yours out here, this year is my year y’know!” he called out to the house. He spotted Tansee’s younger sister Poppy looking down on him through the window and he gave her a wave and blew her a kiss in the most overt manner possible. Merrit had always had a soft spot for Poppy, perhaps even something deeper - though most would debate if Merrit was even capable of such emotion, himself included.
The front door opened and Tansee stepped out, her long brown hair blowing the gentle morning breeze. She had on a blue sundress, quite unlike her usual attire of training wear. “Wow, hello there,” he chuckled as he curtseyed, “You know you don’t need to dress to impress me right?”. Tansee strode towards him and clapped him on the side of the head playfully. “Shut up Merrit, you know it’s for Poppy. She’s always anxious on reaping day.” Merrit could tell that Tansee was worried, if the scowl across her face wasn’t enough. “Come on, let’s go for a walk.” he said as he put his arm round her. They walked for a few hours up the old training tracks that ran into the forest, ever since the new facility was built people didn’t use the woodland runs much more. They spoke for hours, about anything and everything before returning home. As they walked up towards the house Tansee pulled Merrit into a tight embrace, he held her there for a moment, feeling a wet splash on his shoulder. “You better remember that promise,” she said to him, as her sleeve wiped her cheek. He pulled her close and kissed her on the forehead. “As if you’d let me forget. I’ll see you at the Reaping”. He turned and began to walk back towards his place to get ready. It has been unexpected, but also welcome, to be able to open up to Tansee. She was a hardass, and Merrit was a joker. They really didn’t have anyone but each other when it came to.. feelings. Yuck, he jested with himself.
---------------------------------------------
The moment Merrit’s name was called the whole square erupted in applause, many peer’s patting him on his back, congratulating him. He wasn’t stunned, he wasn’t afraid. This was his moment, and he was going to milk every second of it. He spotted Poppy and Tansee in the crowd as he walked up the stage and flashed them a smile and a wink, Tansee rolled her eyes and smiled back in reply, Poppy’s head pointedly towards the ground.
As he made it on to the stage he sized up his opponents, there was no way anyone was getting sent but him, and they all knew it. He got settled and got comfortable, the girls had yet to be nominated. He’d have loved to face this together with Tansee, they’d be unstoppable. He let his thoughts drift off into scenes of victory, Tansee and him, together, winning it all. Until he heard the announcer. “Poppy Fitch” they boomed. His face turned white, all of his swagger and confidence evaporating. His legs felt like they could give up on him at any moment. Shit.
---------------------------------------------
The week next passed in what seemed like a blur. Merrit smashed all the interviews, his charisma and his attitude winning the hearts of the Capitol. When he was voted as the District 5 male tribute, nobody was surprised. Least of all him. However, when Poppy was voted in as the female tribute he had been surprised. He really hoped it wasn’t because of what he’d let slip in that interview. He let out a sigh and took a brief moment to gather himself before stepping out. He had a promise to keep.

NaNoPlanMo Day #9
Time for antagonists!
Because my main antagonist is a secret, I can’t really talk about them here. :(
Instead, I’ll talk about some other antagonists who aren’t secrets. Those will be Kalipus, Tansee, Lydus, and Lupa.
Kalipus: Kalipus is the emperor over the Tralvean empire, a continually expanding empire situated to the southeast of Mylina. Over centuries, they’ve amassed a huge territory through their conquests. At first, they fought in bloody wars for their land, but as the years went on they started using less violent methods. One that became increasingly popular among the royals was that of marriage. Rather than waste man power and labor in both their ranks and the ranks of the kingdom they were trying to take over, they found it far easier to marry into royal families, preferably also producing an heir to solidify the Tralvean influence. Kalipus is one of the most prolific rulers in recent history, having already taken over five kingdoms in his six-year rule thus far. When he arrives at the tournament, everyone expects foul play, as they should, as his eyes lie on taking over Mylina next.
Tansee: There are several spoilers surrounding Tansee, so I won’t go into much detail, but he is basically the leader of the Mage Underground. He was born blind, but with exceptionally powerful mage powers. He harbors any mage that flees into the underworld and uses them to help further the mage revolution above. The only problem with this is that he doesn’t treat them very well. Sure, they are safe, but they are just as exploited as they were above the ground, but now they aren’t allowed to leave. (I may make Tansee a girl- I am undecided as of now, and the character doesn't change an ounce based upon gender. It;s still up in the air, but I’m going with male for now.)
Lydus: Lydus is the King of Wraewit, known for their honor and commitment, as well as for their powerful army. Lydus is a king who claims to be honorable, but is almost anything but. He keeps his word, but only by twisting the circumstance and manipulating everyone around him with veiled threats and half-truths. He was a noted ally of Gavin’s for years, but had done nothing but slander the late king after Gavin’s death. This, obviously, is pretty suspicious, and where Lydus’s petty lies and slander come to fruition.
Lupa: Lupa is one of my favorite characters. I only put her as an antagonist because she is actively going against Romulus, one of my protagonists’s, actions. She is a bitter and cold woman, but has a deep love for her sons, bordering on over protection. She seeks to arrange them into successful marriages, rejecting Romulus’s propositions of true love because of her own past experiences. Lupa likes control and knows when she has it, and can easily come off as cruel, but she really does just mean the best for the people around her. She is not greedy, like many of my other antagonists, simply controlling.
Those are a few of my favorite antagonists! I really wish i could talk about my main baddie, but it would ruin the entire novel if I did! Still- just know that they have been one of my very favorite characters to develop.

NaNoPlanMo Catchup #6
Next was outlining, but I’ve already done that sooo... Next up is style!
I actually ‘pants’ by style and characters in most stories, so I don’t have a clear view of this in my head yet. At all. I know this is more action-heavy than Celestia was for me, but that’s because i’m writing a lot of action-y characters rather than introspective ones. (six of my seven POV characters take active parts in a fight scene.)
The only things I have planned out even loosely about style are my themes, which I won’t really discuss at length until the book is finished.
In lieu of very little to say on Style and nothing to say on outlining, I’m also going to discuss today’s prompt, which is Protagonists.
Well, I kind of already did that when I talked about characters. Crap.
Well, Jewel is my main protagonist, so I think it is pretty worthy to discuss her more in detail here.
Jewel has lived her life raised by her father and his two closest friends and councils. Because of the anti-social ways of her father, she spent much of her life in the castle alone with minimal staff. She didn’t attend any royal functions until she was seven, where she saw her first tournament.
When the novel starts, she’s really coming into her own. She’s learned all about court functions from her mentors, Mage Gy and Lord Miles, and is excited to learn more through practice at the Tournament. She’s nervous about being around so many people, being a natural introvert, but sees being able to handle yourself in a court as something every queen must learn, so she’s determined to do it.
That same determination bleeds over to after her father’s death, where she then becomes determined not only to learn to be a queen, but to become one- a successful one.
Jewel is most defined by her determination in my novel. She comes from a place of weakness in many things, but is willing to work her butt off to improve. I personally find this very admirable, as well as a compelling arc for a character to take.
Tomororw, I’ll make a post about my antagonists! Because my main antagonist is a mystery, I’ll only give vague ideas about them, but I will be able to shed some light on a few secondary ones like Emperor Kalipus, Queen Lupa, and Tansee!
