A few years ago, I noticed that a number of factories in China had started opening TikTok accounts and posting footage from their assembly lines. The videos offered a rare glimpse into global supply chains, and millions of Western TikTok users marveled at teddy bears being stuffed with polyester fiberfill, machines dipping gardening gloves into hot liquified nitrile rubber, and quality assurance testers seeing whether cheap cigarette lighters worked. (My friend and former colleague Andrew Deck wrote a great story about factory TikTok for Rest of World in 2021.)
Since then, hundreds of other Chinese factories have joined TikTok. Some of them produce industrial equipment that would never be bought by normal people, like dump trucks or bottle labeling machines. And while the older factory accounts were often created by marketing agencies, these newer ones seem to largely be the work of earnest salespeople trying to find new customers. Many of them are relying on AI translation and text-to-speech tools, making the videos unintentionally sound very funny.
One of these manufacturers is a company called Donghua Jinlong, which is headquartered in Hebei province about 200 miles from Beijing. It sells “high quality industrial grade glycine,” a type of nutritional additive that evidently sounds silly and abstract to people who never need to think about how processed food is made. Donghua Jinglong and its glycine have become a relatively big meme on TikTok, Instagram, and X over the last few days, and some of the company’s videos are getting over 100,000 views (even though its official account only has roughly 4,400 followers).
Donghua Jinlong itself, however, doesn’t seem to have any idea what’s going on. People in the comments keep begging it to make official merch, but the company doesn’t understand why anyone would want a sweatshirt or t-shirt with the name of an industrial manufacturer on it. Shitposters have also started referencing the Donghua Jinlong meme in the comments of videos from other Chinese factories.
A company called HengYuan, for example, posted a video of what can only be described as a machine for filling Tide Pods, and one of the top comments is someone asking “Could you pack food grade glycine in this?”
Clearly baffled, HengYuan responded, “No. This is used to pack detergent in PVA Film.”
The Donghua Jinlong meme is a great microcosm of what’s actually happening on TikTok when it comes to content from China. Some people might argue that Chinese manufacturers are choosing to post on the app because its parent company, ByteDance, is also from China. In other words, these factories could be held up as an example of TikTok allowing Chinese influence to grow in the US (albeit a bizarre one).
But Donghua Jinlong also has a Facebook page with even more followers, it’s just that no one is engaging with its posts there. That’s because there are likely very few people searching social media for a new glycine supplier at any given time. TikTok, however, doesn’t rely on users to actively seek out content, it serves videos to them via an algorithm. So now tons of random people are coming across glycine manufacturers and Tide Pod machines by accident, and they’re happily turning the whole thing into a joke.
I personally find these videos to be fascinating, both because It’s cool to learn how things are made, and because they provide the opportunity to watch in real time what happens when random Chinese companies come into contact with American social media users. I don’t think this is the type of Chinese influence lawmakers are imagining when they worry about TikTok, but it’s arguably much more interesting and human.

We promised a detailed analysis of the COOL Online Act, and we have delivered!
A couple of excerpts from the introduction:
In the US and most other countries, when a consumer buys something new, they have the legal right to know where that product was made. This is the reason behind those stickers that say “Made in China”, “Made in Taiwan”, “Hecho en México” etc. However, these days more and more consumers are making purchases online rather than in person, and the laws that protect consumers’ rights are still catching up with the rise of online shopping.
The COOL (Country Of Origin Labeling) Online Act, a bill currently being considered by the US Senate, aims to make sure consumers who make purchases online rather than in person still have access to this important information.
[...]
The ISG worked hard with the office of Senator Tammy Baldwin, the sponsor of the bill, to make sure the new requirement will not hurt any of our members and will only target resellers misleading customers and driving down prices for authentic handmade sellers.
An FAQ has been included below the cut, but we recommend clicking through to the blog post for the full analysis.
Also, please note that this article is based on our research and understanding of the bill, but in no way should be taken as legal advice. The Indie Sellers Guild is not liable for any issues, legal or otherwise, sellers may encounter as the result of following the advice in this article.
Q: What is this bill all about?
A: In the US, when you buy an item in person you can see a “Made in _____” country of origin label on it somewhere. This is required by US customs law for items made outside the US. But there is currently no such requirement for items sold online. This bill aims to close that loophole and provide online shoppers with the same information they would have when shopping in person.
Q: How will I find the country of origin information for products?
A: It should be listed on the product or product packaging as a “Made in _____” label put on by the manufacturer. As long as you provide this information clearly in a listing, you are good to go. The limitations of liability in the bill means that you are only responsible for providing the information given to you by the manufacturer, and not liable if the manufacturer’s listing was wrong or false.
For a seller that creates their products (a handmade seller), the country the seller made it in would be the country of origin.
Q: How will I know if my handmade product counts as a new product that I made?
A: You have created a new product, with the country of origin now where you are, if you substantially transformed the item. “Substantial transformation means that the good underwent a fundamental change (normally as a result of processing or manufacturing in the country claiming origin) in form, appearance, nature, or character, which adds to its value an amount or percentage that is significant in comparison to the value which the good (or its components or materials) had when exported from the country in which it was first made or grown.”
So if you take fabric, thread, a zipper and buttons and make an item of clothing, you have substantially transformed those supplies into a new product.
Q: But what about taking an existing item and changing it? Like screen printing on a t-shirt?
A: That does change the t-shirts appearance and add value. Our contact at Senator Baldwin’s office said that would be a new product. But our advice is to be transparent about any country of origin labeling leftover in your handmade product. The goal of this bill is to provide the information you would see if you shopped in a physical store to online shopping. So if the handmade product you send out has a “Made in ____” labeling from one of the components you used (like a t-shirt), you’ll just share that information in the online listing.
Q: I am a seller in the US, does that mean I will put “made in the US” as my country of origin?
A: Actually, that is different. The “Made in USA” labeling is regulated by different marketing laws, not customs law. This bill is specifically for products made outside of the US, so US sellers do not need to provide country of origin labeling under the COOL Online Act. If you want to learn more about the “Made in USA” marketing laws, you can do so [via a link provided in the original FAQ].
Q: I am a seller in a country other than the US, will this bill apply to me?
A: Yes, it will apply to any products you sell to consumers in the US.
Q: So if I’m a seller outside the US, how will I label products I sell to the US?
A: If you are a handmade seller, then you are producing the new products and the country of origin would be where you live. Some countries have specific laws about labeling products as “Made in your country”, so please check the applicable laws for the best way to phrase your country of origin labeling. If you can’t find anything else more applicable, we recommend “Country of origin for US import law _______” as something to cover you for the COOL Online Act if it passes without going against any labeling laws in your country.
If you are a craft supply seller, this would be the country the item was manufactured in, so check the “Made in _____” labeling on the product and list that. If you are a vintage seller this bill does not apply to you.
Q: My shop is really small, do I really need to do all this?
A: The COOL Online Act has an exception for small sellers. If you make less than $20,000 revenue and sell less than 200 items in a year for each marketplace you sell on, this bill would not apply to you if it becomes law.
The each marketplace part of that means each place you sell would count towards its own total. So if you sell 150 items/$15,000 on Etsy and 75 items/$4000 on Facebook marketplace and 10 items/$2000 on Ebay, you would still be exempt as a small seller because your total at one marketplace never crossed the threshold.
Q: I am a vintage seller, will the bill apply to me?
A: Nope! It only applies to new products, anything sold that is used or pre-owned is exempt. So our vintage sellers don’t need to make any changes.
Q: I am a craft supply seller, how will this bill work for me?
A: For any products sold to the US you will need to list the country of origin provided by the manufacturer. This should be found on the product in the “Made in _____” labeling.
Q: I live in and design my products in one country, but use a print on demand company to make them. How will this bill work for me?
A: You could say “Designed in” whatever country you live in, and then would need to list whatever country the print on demand company manufactures the products in as the country of origin. The print on demand company will need to provide this information if they want to sell to the US themselves, so you should be able to get it from them. This is pretty much the same as Etsy’s already-existing requirement to list production partners. We think this will overall help our sellers, who tend to already be transparent about their process, by penalizing sellers that try to hide where their products are made. It will hopefully also make it easier for sellers to indicate when they use local print shops.
Q: What if I buy my materials from several different countries? Do I have to list all of them?
A: If you are creating a new product from those materials then no. You have created a new product and the country of origin is where you are. You do not need to provide country of origin information for all of the components used. If part of your handmade product has a clear “Made in ______” label of its own, for example a t-shirt you dyed, you could provide that information to customers if you want for full transparency, but it is not required by this bill. It would just be so that customers wouldn’t get confused upon seeing that tag.
Q: What are the marketplaces’ responsibility in all this?
A: Marketplaces are required to notify sellers of the new country of origin labeling requirements. They are also required to provide a way to list that information in the product’s description.
Q: How will this be enforced?
A: Anyone who violates this rule is subject to Federal Trade Commission’s regulations about unfair and deceptive business practices. But this is a civil violation, not criminal. The process can involve a hearing or interviews, or even formal subpoenas for information from the company. The FTC then brings the complaint to a judge, who either issues a cease and desist order or dismisses the complaint. Only if the company violates a cease and desist order are they liable to penalties. The penalty is up to $10,000 per violation. FTC cases tend to result in financial penalties paid back to consumers. The FTC can also forward a case on to law enforcement agencies if they believe a crime has been committed. [Two sources provided here in the original FAQ.]
Q: In the past I bought something that was claimed to be handmade, but when I got it there was a clear “Made in _____” tag and I found the same item for sale elsewhere at a much lower price. How would the COOL Online Act help keep me from getting ripped off like this in the future?
A: First off, if the COOL Online Act becomes law, that kind of false labeling of an item as handmade would specifically be unlawful and a violation of the unfair and deceptive practices regulations. If that happened again you could file a complaint with the FTC. More generally, it should increase the overall level of transparency from sellers about where their products come from and so make it easier to spot when a seller is being shady.
Q: What happens when I file a complaint with the FTC?
A: The FTC does not open cases for individuals. Rather, they use complaints to help identify patterns of unfair or deceptive practices from businesses. The FTC can bring enforcement action against businesses and one of the things that influence that is the number and severity of consumer complaints against a business. [Source provided here in the original FAQ.]
Q: What if I have an FTC complaint filed against me as a seller?
A: As far as we can tell, a single complaint against a small business is unlikely to do anything, unless it is for an issue specifically being investigated by the FTC. The FTC does not open cases for individuals, but instead pursues companies or industries based on public interest. So a single complaint of a single violation that did not cause much harm to the consumer may not get much attention.
According to our contacts, if the FTC does follow up with a complaint, they usually reach out to the business for more information, either informally or formally with civil investigative demand or subpoena. The FTC then takes the complaint and information to a judge, who either issues a cease and desist order or dismisses the complaint. Only if you violate a cease and desist order are you liable for civil penalties.
The bill calls for an interagency agreement to be publicly published that will give more guidelines on how this new requirement will be handled, so that should help provide more specific information. [Four sources provided here in the original FAQ.]
Q: If this bill passes will it actually make a difference?
A: It’s hard to predict exactly how much the COOL Online Act would change things, especially with enforcement through the FTC. What it will do is offer a clear legal requirement to provide country of origin labeling and a clear place to report violations. We hope it does a lot to reduce the problem of dishonest resellers on handmade platforms, but at the very least it will make it easier for customers to avoid resellers and make it more obvious when a seller is not being transparent. And it will be a clear win for creative indie sellers and consumers against the interests of large e-commerce platforms and retailers who don’t want this bill, which is a huge victory on its own!
Q: What is Etsy doing about this bill?
A: They are lobbying hard against it by saying that us, the makers, don’t want it. They say that it will be overly complicated and place a burden on handmade sellers, but we went over the whole bill carefully and found nothing to back that up. We think Etsy is resisting the bill because even though resellers are making Etsy a more difficult place for honest sellers to do business, the reselling and dropshipping industry still generates a lot of money for Etsy.
The bill is targeted at resellers dishonestly passing off foreign mass produced items as handmade while not causing a problem for genuine handmade sellers, and we were able to directly give feedback on how to make sure that happened. It is more important than ever now to make sure our voices are heard loud and clear, so that Etsy and other large e-commerce platforms can’t use us as puppets to protect their special interests.
Q: What can I do to support this bill and help it become law?
A: First off, sign up to support the bill and receive updates! [Link provided here in the original FAQ.] That way if there are any developments or calls to action, you will know right away. Then join the Guild if you haven’t yet! It’s free and anyone can join as an ally member. We are speaking on behalf of creative indie sellers for their interests, and the more members we have, the louder our voice will be as we continue to work with the Senate on this bill.
Q: What happens next with the COOL Online Act?
A: When the Senate reconvenes on September 5th, the next step will be to schedule a vote and to put it in a package with other legislation. We will be keeping a close eye on things to make sure it continues to move forward, and we’ll watch for any procedural road blocks opponents might put up. So please sign up to support and watch your email! If we need your help, we’ll need it fast, and we’ll email out a call to contact your Senator with a link to an email template.

My thoughts on cultural appropriation
I never liked the term due to its power dinamics. I guess a good way to put it into perspective is mirroring. You wouldn't tell me, a person from a small Asian nation of Sakha (Yakut) that I'm not allowed to wear cowboy boots. Especially, if I came to like the town of Tombstone and bought them there. I'd be supporting local economy.
Same thing is if you came to Yakutsk and bought Yakut clothes. It would be welcome. If you wore these clothes in Yakutsk, people would find you weird or funny, they would even maybe find you inspiring if you wore them well. Because seeing someone else do a local thing makes it seem bigger.
With these clothes being just clothes, hardly anyone would see it as truly disrespectful. This is what people do when they travel: they eat local food, they learn local words, they wear local clothes.
Whet about spiritual significance of Yakut clothes? What about spiritual significance of your t-shirt? If you don't wanna buy shaman clothes, don't buy shaman clothes. Somehow, you don't dress like a priest in normal life.
Now, when you leave Yakutsk, you probably won't be wearing these clothes anymore because it would be socially confusing. Unless the item of clothing looks cool, of course. I'd also wear good cowboy boots outside of the USA. You can also display them or show them to people like you do with fridge magnets.
What you did there is perfectly normal for people to do. You did cultural exchange and you supported Yakut economy. It's not cultural appropriation.
It would be cultural appropriation if you started manufacturing Yakut clothes on a mass scale and making money without admitting these are Yakut clothes. If you made a copy of them with your hands, it's not appropriation, it's just making clothes. You're not stealing a whole lot by just making one copy. If you manufacture Yakut clothes properly crediting them but without hiring Yakut people (not like it would help, trickle down economics don't work, especially if you just pay money to one person or they move out of Yakutia which many people would), you're an ass hole, but you're also spreading awareness of Yakut culture which is not evil. You'll probably get backlash, especially from white people.
You might get backlash from posting your pics in Yakut clothes from your trip to Yakutsk too. But only if you have a big enough online presence or are very unlucky. I think it's wrong because as a single person just buying things and enjoying them on your own, you don't do anything wrong except for participating in capitalism.
By the way, capitalism. Cultures have capital. The more likely a culture is to sell, the more capital it has. The more capital it has, the more likely it is to be exploited. How many souvenirs are made in China? Buy hey, guess what? They're sold in local places. To buy them you have to go there, eat local food, learn local words and maybe even buy local hand made clothes. If you do all these things locally, you're supporting local economy.
Cultural capital means that if you refuse to buy local things locally and refuse to talk about these things, that culture loses clout and becomes weaker. So, as long as you're saying that interaction is appropriation, you're taking away from smaller cultures and making dominant ones stronger.
Now, what if you wore Yakut clothes on Halloween? It's a dick move, but it's not like it's illegal. Neither is it cultural appropriation, more like cultural alienation. It's cringe and gross, but you do you.
What if you use it for sex stuff? Why do you want me to know? You don't harm anyone with it. If you tell people about it, they'll feel weird. Why do you think people should judge your personal behaviour that's unknown to anyone? Escape the panopticon of your own mind, jeesh. Grow op already and live with yourself.
Not everything you do should be subject to social capital. But buying things in small economies is generally good.

do you have any tips on fashion because I have always felt judged and been insulted by fashion girls in the past when I have asked them (my sister and her friends have studied it and lived in Paris working in fashion) So my self esteem isn’t the best
Fashion isn't that much exciting tbh
Most fashion designers are very casual and normal looking "fashion people" are just a bunch of posers. Them making fun of you doesn't say anything bad about you, anon. Never forget what out today will be in in a few years from now. In a few years, they WISH they had your careless swag lol Two people could wear the same outfit and pull out a whole different vibe, that's why fashion people are usually highly insecure people because they use their fashion sense to put up as real/decent personality (I know cause I've been there).
Fashion goes so fast anyway, there's no point to look up fashion trend - it would be as desperate as trying to jump in a train a full speed lol Until that it will crash 2 sec later because that's how fast fashion trends crash & burn these days¯_(ツ)_/¯ Everything changes so fast in fashion, so bad there are no rules anymore. Actual, not being able to define your style is best fashion statement ever, anon.
But if anything, anon, you should look after quality clothes. They have become the most rare items. Don't buy new clothes. Do thrift - lothes from the 70s to 90s had much more qualitative finitions and fabrics. A t shirt made in decent condition should cost at least 100€ but one of you are not ready for that conversation. People complaining about poor slaves making clothes in Asia while seething at independent fashion designers making clothes "too expensive" are raging hypocrites. Polyester is demonic. Expensive =/= quality. Most luxury bags are made in Italy by illegals without any insurance coverage who get threatened by the mafia is they speak up. A piece of clothing made in China with one button sewn in France is legally "Made in France". Luxury brands and especially cosmetics are a scam - basically high end brands don't sell clothes that much, so their main income comes from perfume and cosmetics they overcharge exponentially (Chanel nail polish are infamously shitty). Same with their shitty bag (the cost price of a Hermès bag is 150-200€, and is sold 30 000€-140 000€) . Fashion =/= style =/= elegance. "Iconic" died in the 90s - any journal(ist) calling anything past that era as such as a liar and/or want to sell you shit. "Organic clothing" is lowkey a scam. Organic cotton takes more water to grow than non organic one so ultimately both take a toll on the environment - the nuisance is just different . Also there's no point to buy organic if that clothes is manufactured from a whole different continent. Transportation is one of the reason why the fashion industry is so polluting. Also organic =/= ethical. There are sweatshop slaves somewhere in Asia making organic fabric for etHicAl shitty fashion brand~ Not sElLing any clothes industrially is the most oRgAnic and EtHicAl thing a brand can do.

For the hand sewing portions:
- where your needles were manufactured matters VERY MUCH. You need needles made in England, Germany, or Japan. They are made strong, smooth, and very uniform from one another. Needles that were manufactured in China or the USA have a different standard for mass production and are riddled with imperfections that act like tiny little barbs that snag on everything and make sewing more difficult.
- your thimble is meant to be on the finger that anchors the back of your needle while you push it through fabric. It's not supposed to sit on any fingers receiving the needle. If you keep a steady pace, you will not be likely to prick yourself anyway.
- the type of thread you use for a job matters. Silk thread is strong and lays down smoother so you want to use it for button holes or other finishes that could be larger and therefore bulky with thicker threads. Cotton thread is good for hemming and other edge finishes because it doesn't fray easily.
- BEESWAX! There are beeswax items you can buy to run thread over to make it stronger and less likely to tangle.
For machine sewing:
- Iron. IRON! IRON!!! Half of good-quality sewing is pressing and ironing your work as you go. It is tedious, it is constant. DO IT. It will turn out 100 times better 100% of the time.
-with ironing, there are items that are helpful to have and worth investing in if you want to dedicate more time to sewing. First off, an ironing cloth. Just a simple, medium-weight 100% cotton cloth to place over lighter, more sensitive fabrics to keep them from burning, discoloring, or warping under the heat. Especially silks. You can use a scrap of cotton fabric or deconstruct an old t-shirt.
-tailors ham is your best friend when you are getting started in garment making. This little dude helps with pressing curved seams into the shape you want to get the best out of your hard work. PLEASE invest in one filled with sawdust, sawdust reacts to moister from the steam of pressing your fabric that works better with relaxing the fibers than poly-fill.
Things I wish I had read in “beginner” sewing tutorials/people had told me before I started getting into sewing
You have to hem *everything* eventually. Hemming isn’t optional. (If you don’t hem your cloth, it will start to thread. There are exceptions to this, like felt, but most cloth will.)
The type of cloth you choose for your project matters very much. Your clothing won’t “fall right” if it’s not the kind of stretchy/heavy/stiff as the one the tutorial assumes you will use.
Some types of cloth are very chill about threading, some are very much not. Linen doesn’t really give a fuck as long as you don’t, like, throw it into the washing machine unhemmed (see below), whereas brocade yearns for entropy so, so much.
On that note: if you get new cloth: 1. hem its borders (or use a ripple stitch) 2. throw it in the washing machine on the setting that you plan to wash it going forward 3. iron it. You’ll regret it, if you don’t do it. If you don’t hem, it’ll thread. If you don’t wash beforehand, the finished piece might warp in the first wash. If you don’t iron it, it won’t be nice and flat and all of your measuring and sewing will be off.
Sewing’s first virtue is diligence, followed closely by patience. Measure three times before cutting. Check the symmetry every once in a while. If you can’t concentrate anymore, stop. Yes, even if you’re almost done.
The order in which you sew your garment’s parts matters very much. Stick to the plan, but think ahead.
You’ll probably be fine if you sew something on wrong - you can undo it with a seam ripper (get a seam ripper, they’re cheap!)
You can use chalk to draw and write on the cloth.
Pick something made out of rectangles for your first project.
I recommend making something out of linen as a beginner project. It’s nearly indestructible, barely threads and folds very neatly.
Collars are going to suck.
The sewing machine can’t hurt you (probably). There is a guard for a reason and while the needle is very scary at first, if you do it right, your hands will be away from it at least 5 cm at any given time. Also the spoils of learning machine sewing are not to be underestimated. You will be SO fast.
I believe that’s all - feel free to add unto it.

How does the cost of wholesale T-shirts in Bangladesh compare to other countries?
The cost of wholesale T-shirts in Bangladesh is generally more competitive than in many other major manufacturing countries. This advantage comes from several factors unique to Bangladesh:
Lower Labor Costs: Bangladesh has one of the most affordable labor markets among textile-producing nations. Wages for garment workers are significantly lower than those in China, Vietnam, or India, which helps reduce production costs.
Government Support: The Bangladeshi government offers incentives to support the garment industry, including tax breaks and subsidies, particularly for exporters. This support helps manufacturers offer lower wholesale prices.
Efficient Supply Chain: Bangladesh has a mature and highly efficient supply chain for the textile industry. With access to high-quality raw materials and a robust infrastructure for spinning, weaving, and dyeing, manufacturers can keep costs low. Additionally, Bangladesh has established relationships with global shipping companies, ensuring cost-effective logistics.
Large Manufacturing Base: Bangladesh is one of the largest textile and apparel exporters, so manufacturers benefit from economies of scale. This scale allows for the production of bulk orders at reduced costs, which wholesalers can pass on to their clients.
Eco-friendly Practices: Although eco-friendly production usually raises costs, many Bangladeshi manufacturers, including Tees BD Co, have embraced sustainable practices while maintaining competitive pricing. They balance affordability with environmentally friendly processes that appeal to international clients seeking green options without high premiums.
Comparison to Other Countries:
China: China’s prices are often higher due to rising labor costs and additional tariffs on exports to certain countries. However, Chinese manufacturers offer advanced technology and shorter lead times.
Vietnam: Vietnam is competitive but typically more expensive than Bangladesh. Labor costs are higher, and manufacturing is less focused on large-scale bulk production.
India: India offers competitive pricing but slightly higher labor costs. Indian manufacturers are also more diversified across various textiles, which can sometimes lead to higher costs in niche categories.
In summary, Bangladesh remains one of the most cost-effective options for wholesale T-shirts globally, especially for businesses needing large quantities without compromising on quality.

I looked and it didnt seem like anyone addressed this point so i cant help but step in with some more context here!
All of the replys urging people to shop locally and in garment districts are absolutely right, everyone should do that! Stop giving you money to Big Joann TM and find a craft store near you! But it seems to have missed us that the Reason for doing that isnt finding ethically sourced fabric. Buying offcuts by the pound is not at all supporting ethical production (i know that no one is claiming this specifically - dont do a hostile read here give me a chance lol).
Supporting local business is great! Full stop! But the fabric youre buying there was produced in the exact same sweatshops in indonesia, china, india, and pakistan that go to shein workshops to be made into disposable, single-use garments. The pay, working conditions, etc. are not going to be any more ethical or sustainable.
However by making your own crafts (even if you get the materials from aliexpress!) you are eliminating at least one stage from the cannibalistic ourobouros that is late-stage capitalism, and youre making sure that at least one unethical company (in this case jewelry so claires? Forever21? Where are the kids buying theire nonsense nowadays ?) is not profiting off of your purchasing power, and you are not participating in their control over the system as a whole.
But i hear you saying ah! But it doesnt matter! As OP said you cant claim ot was ethically made when the materials were not Also ethically made!
Tragically, clothing/fashion/fabric production is the quinticencial example of that memefrom the good place where they conclude that there is No ethical consumption under modern day capitalism. There are simply too many stages in development, and we have globalized them so thoroughly that if you arent purchasing from a company that publically documents every single stage in production (which i have had yet to find anywhere close to my price range) Because otherwise its impossible to be sure there wasnt slave labor in there Somewhere.
Where was the cotton/linen/wool farmed? How were the materials shipped? How was the fiber spun? And then shipped again? What was the fiber blended with? How was it woven/knit? Was it crocheted? (Because we currently do not have a mechanical process for crochet! If you purchase a crochet garmet, it was done by hand! Entirely!)
What about the dye process? How about the environmental regulations around dye manufacturers and fabric dyers? How could it have potentially contributed to pollution or to adverse health affects for workers?
Then, and only then, can we get to the problems with shein-style clothing manufacturing.
The attention paid to the conditions of fast-fashion production is disproportionately given to this final stage in the process (not that it doesnt require our attention - obviously the conditions are inhumane, unsustainable, and just wrong in every ssense of the word). But when youre asking the question, where can i/should i look to buy ethical materials for my craft work, it is extraordinarily difficult to aswer even one of the questions from above.
I have a lot of different political/economic opinions from the author of this book (i am a communist, she is an American economist sooooo….) but she gives an amazing overview of the timeline of fast fashion production, and its economic history. So if youre at all interested in exploring that i do really reccomend this:
The travels of a T Shirt in the World Economy - i found a pdf of it here
The point of this was not for me to be super discouraging though! I do not want to discount the power that making your own clothes, thrifting, or buying locally has! All of those things are incredibly significant - it takes money out of the ourborous that is H&M and gives it to your neighbor, or local shopkeeper. What it doesnt do (necessarily) is take it out of the cannibalistic system entirely.
But there isnt a way for us, with our personal purchasing power, to do that. Instead we must use our political power to continue the ongoing campaign to force political bodies to regulate international companies like Shein, like H&M, like forever21. To prevent human rights violations and promote labor rights internationally.
One of the more interesting sections of that book was where the author interviewed a garment worker, surprised by the fact that she repeatedly purchased clothes made in the same sweatshops she was forced to work 16-18 hour days in. To us westerners, that is a very reasonable question! The concept of the ethical ramifications of individual purchasing power is very entrenched here. But the garment worker was taken aback that the author would even think to ask her that - because her individual purchasing decisions mean nothing in the grand scheme!
Companies have successful diverted the blame from themselves, and their deeply unethical business practices, to us! Theyre saying “well youre the one who buys this stuff! Its all of your fault! If you want the people who made it to be paid more than 10 cents a hour, go buy shit from somewhere else!”
And then theyve made it so that “somewhere else” is not only owned by them, so they can keep their profit margins the same, but often literally produced side by side, in the same exact factory, and just given different packaging down the line. And so many of these damn companies own each other that its impossible for the average joe to work out all the red tape, and so Big Joann TM continues to take my money, time and time again.
Basically, just do whatever you can, wherever you are, and support labor rights everywhere, in all cases, without exception. (Except cops fuck those motherfuckers they dont count as labor).
And distrust/discount any label on a fiber based product that claims ethicallity until doing Extensive research to prove their claims. No saying it doesnt exist! Just saying that the standard is extremely hard to reach under current conditions.
Anyway if anyone has made it this far i hope you have a lovely day and craft to your hearts content and dont let Big Joann TM make you feel bad for being unable to afford to buy solely entirely “ethical” materials. They dont really exist, and its not your fault for being poor. Big Joann TM likes it that way.
I feel like something that doesnt get talked about enough is how fast fashion is coming to hobbies as well. Sure, you can sew, knit, and crochet something better than youd buy in store, but good luck finding quality materials
Want a fabric that doesnt fray from being gently caressed? Want yarn thats not 100% plastic and splits if you touch it wrong? Good luck finding that if you dont have a genuinely good crafts store near you.
Go on any thread where people are trying to figure out where to buy fabric. 50% of it is people saying big stores are servicable, online stores work, or the like, and the other 50% are talking about how bad the quality is or how the quality of a website dropped because it was bought out
Were running into a problem where fast fashiob is so integrated into society that even the ability to make your own, comfortable and long lasting, clothes is being threatened by capitalism
