🎥 On July 16th, 2024, I meticulously crafted slogans condemning UNHCR’s colossal failures in restoring my liberty, dignity, and fundamental rights. Battling starvation, fatigue, and oppressive heat, the staff’s deliberate evasions on July 17th-18th brutally culminated in aggressive police intervention and an unjust two-month incarceration. Returning on September 11th to renewed starvation and loss underscored profound systemic injustice, necessitating urgent global intervention.

Tolerance is a virtue, but tolerance of injustice is not.
Sadly, I see injustice happening all around me all the time, and not tolerating injustice would mean I remain in confrontational and fighting mode perpetually. A polite reminder can change things for a short while but not long term as it is difficult for people to change their personalities.
We should live at two different levels, just as there is daylight and night, and there is action and rest, in a similar way there is tolerance and refusal to tolerate. In the outer world, operating from our working minds, we should be intolerant of injustice. Whereas during periods of rest and inner connection, and operating from our inner consciousness/soul, we should remain in a tolerant and forgiving mode.

Another day, another attack on the Black community. Heart-wrenching to see my dad, a victim of police mishandling before, faced it again—this time by a Black officer. It's a painful reminder that systemic issues run deep. This fight is against a broken system, not just individuals. #SystemicInjustice #BlackLivesMatter

It’s been a long time since I took these photos. It’s hard to know where to start in sharing about them.
Theres nothing sweeter to watch than when a guarded kid feels safe enough to be a child. Going home with my college roommate for Christmas break meant getting to see her reunion with these little buds.
They see her-- they know they are safe, loved, and cared for. They trust her. She will feed them, protect them and play with them. It just takes them a few minutes to remember that. A few minutes and a happy meal.
Home for her is on the Yakima Indian Reservation. I’m embarrassed to admit that I growing up I thought Native Americans were extinct, or at least that the land and culture was gone. When history is told by oppressors I guess that is what happens. The museums I went to and the things I saw in media only shared native culture as what was happening in the 1400s around a table at thanksgiving or some version of Pocahontas. There was no explanation of what happened to them or where they are now.
It wasn’t until I saw the Aaron Huey’s publication on the Pine Ridge Reservation that I began to learn about the real history of Native America, of their resilience and of all they have suffered to continue living here.
His photos are stunning and hard to see. It would be easiest to judge the parents, or grandparents for the state of their nation. Suspend your judgement for enough time to learn what these people have gone through to get to this point.

We have a lot more to learn and a long way to go as a nation.

Throughout the many incarnations of systemic racism in this country, the reality is that Black lives matter but only in relation to more valuable white lives.

I was explaining to a good friend a couple of nights ago that since writing the chapter on punishment for the dissertation, I have found myself even more convinced that caging human beings is an inadequate response to social harms.
Even theoretically I think this may be the case. But in practice it's pretty clear that we just use this system to hurt who we can.

🎥 Over a decade of relentless efforts and visits to ‘SolidarityNow’ revealed systemic neglect on December 28th, 2023, with deficient support and bureaucratic evasion, escalating to police involvement, xenophobic remarks and expedited dismissal, illustrating an institutional strategy to suppress refugee voices and maintain exclusion. Further encounters on April 05th and 12th, 2024, with evasive staff and locked offices, reinforce the intent to deny rights and support.
