A Kiss At Midnight In Time
Characters/Relationship: Loki/Sylvie
Rating: Teen. Word Count: 1300. Tags: Romance, Reuniting, Waltz, New Year’s Eve
Summary: (Post Loki S1): Loki finds Sylvie at a masquerade ball New Year’s Eve 1977. What else would he do but ask for a dance?
Loki held a flute of champagne and looked around the room. The TVA had tracked Sylvie using her temporal signature or whatever nonsense to that night, New Year’s Eve 1977, on Earth in London. Loki dressed in a tuxedo, complete with ruffled white shirt and black bow tie, and headed out with Mobius at his side. It had taken convincing and some magical memory sharing, but Mobius was his friend again. He was across the room, looking as well.
It was a masquerade ball - tuxedos, evening gowns, masks. Loki had chosen a mask of such a dark green it was almost black, plus it had a bit of a shimmer and a golden snake looped around the eyes. The ballroom was in an old building with high ceilings, chandeliers, and decorative moldings on the walls. It was outfitted with paper streamers and balloons in gold and black and one wall of the room had glass doors to a large balcony that overlooked the city.
Sylvie had to be somewhere. Loki’s eyes searched the room. There, there.
Loki’s breath caught. He didn’t take his eyes off a blonde woman with a simple black mask, but she was wearing a crown of gold horns - one was broken. To the room they’d seem part of the mask, but Loki knew better.
Sylvie was wearing a gown of rich emerald green sequins with a slit up the right side. She moved some and Loki saw her bare leg. Oh. Her arms were also uncovered and there was so much skin that he hadn’t seen before. He wished to touch her everywhere. Oh yes. His grip on the champagne flute tightened.
It also revealed her wearing black combat boots and that made Loki smile. She liked to be comfortable, so of course she refused heels.
Loki made his way across the room, weaving and darting through the crowd of people and high cocktail tables on the side of the dance floor. He had so many questions. Was she okay? Did she mean to send him where he ended up or was the destination an accident because the timelines already fractured? What was she doing in 1977? Would she join him and Mobius in preparing for the variants of He Who Remains? Did he mean anything to her? Did the kiss mean anything? Could they kiss again? Could they kiss everyday? Without tears? Could they have a cuddle and watch a sunset? Could she put her hands on his shoulders again as he held her waist? Loki could wait for clothes to come off, he wanted to get it right. He could move slow. He wanted it to be real.
All of the questions were on the tip of his tongue, but once he was in front of her and her shocked eyes met his and the orchestra began a waltz, The Blue Danube by Johann Strauss II, different words came out.
“Would you care to dance, my lady?”
Sylvie’s eyebrows furrowed and her nose wrinkled. Loki’s heart sped up. It was a moment before she said, “Let’s have at it then.”
The champagne flute in her hand vanished at the same time as his - Sylvie’s magic. Loki held out his hand and bowed as he would at a court function in Asgard. She had an amused smirk and grabbed it.
He had to get this right. He led her onto the dance floor as the waltz continued through its beginning. Perfect. Except she furrowed those eyebrows again - oh. She didn’t know how to dance a waltz, having grown up in apocalypses so hadn’t had the Midgardian experiences Loki had.
“Put your left hand on my shoulder.”
As she did, Loki placed his right hand on the middle of Sylvie’s back, careful to not touch her bare skin that was revealed by a deep V of her dress. He had to move slow.
Loki raised his left hand, “Now we hold hands.”
“Sure is a lot of touching.”
“It’s a dance. Now follow me.”
Loki led her amongst the other dancers and she quickly picked it up. Loki dared to press his body closer and a hint of red appeared on her cheeks. Oh he liked that look on her very much. Loki had just about eleven minutes of the song to sweep her off her feet. He moved them to the ebb and flow of the music. There were no words between them - only the music, their bodies, and the dance.
The masks kept some level of barrier as they made eye contact, but it was still intense. Loki felt as his heart would burst, he never wished for it to end. He could hold her in his arms for eternity.
Except the song had to end. Loki knew the end of it was approaching, so he led Sylvie off the dance floor to the balcony doors and opened them telekinetically. Sylvie rolled her eyes but didn’t say anything as he closed the doors behind them.
The quiet roar of a city on New Year’s Eve came from below, and still they didn’t say anything, only held hands. Loki was at a loss for words for once. She was there, in front of him. They danced a waltz.
Sylvie took off her mask. “That was the second most romantic experience of my life.”
“Second, what was the first?” Loki frowned and took off his own mask. He wanted to be on the top of all her lists. The good ones, to be specific.
“The tablecloth.”
Loki smiled. Oh he was. He was the top of the list. “It was a blanket.”
Sylvie shrugged, “Not very cozy.”
“I can do better.”
“You’ve done good.” Her face fell a little, “You didn’t want that throne after all.”
“I don’t. I want you to be okay.”
“I’m working on that.”
There were so many things to say, to ask, but Loki settled on one. “Can I help?”
Sylvie shook her head, “It’s something I have to do on my own.”
Loki’s heart sunk lower than he thought possible. He looked away. It hurt. “Oh.”
“I want you to be okay too.” She squeezed his hand.
Loki’s heart tentatively hoped at the touch and her words. People did have to take care of themselves, but there could be support, yes? Friends, family… a lover. Loki wanted to be all of them for her.
There was a countdown coming from inside and Loki could hear the crowd yell, “Ten!”
Sylvie said quietly, “I’m sorry.”
“Accepted. I’m sorry as well.” Loki still held her hand and she made no move to let go. That was good progress.
“Eight!”
She added, “We could try to be okay, next to each other.”
“Six!”
Loki’s heart hoped even more, but the situation felt fragile, like if he held on too hard it would crush in his grasp, “Perhaps even together.”
“Four!”
Sylvie smiled a little, cautious. “Together.” Then her gaze flicked to his and back to his eyes. “A kiss at midnight’s supposed to be lucky.”
“Two!”
Yes. He desperately wanted a happy kiss with her. Loki smirked then, “We better not miss the opportunity.”
“One!” Cheers went up inside, signifying midnight had struck.
Sylvie tilted her head up and Loki met her in the middle. Fireworks were in the sky as they kissed and their masks fell to the stone of the balcony. Loki moved his free hand to her waist and she moved hers to his shoulder. They moved as close as they could get, pressing their bodies close.
Loki’s heart was full of hope and promise. They could do anything together, he was so sure of it. Even protect the multiverse, but that could wait for its own time. At that moment it was only them and their kiss at midnight.

Timelines of the heart | Sylki One-shot
Loki and Sylvie fought for hours, their voices echoing through the dimly lit room. Yet, in the midst of their heated words exchanged, the memory of Sylvie's question, "Why don't we see this the same way?" echoed in his head and his heart sank.
"You just left without a word right after getting Timely... like I was nothing," Sylvie's voice trembling and grew louder, "You only looked back when I told you to not make me regret letting Timely go and you didn't even reply me then!"
"Well at least I didn't push you through a time door!", Loki's voice rose.
"Yeah, I shouldn't have pushed you through the time door when I should've stabbed you instead!", Sylvie said sarcastically, and couldn't stop tears from forming in her eyes.
"Well why didn't you? It sure had been clear that I'm the last person you want to see."
"If you know that, then why are you even here talking to me when you should be running around the TVA? Aren't you obsessed with the TVA? TVA this, TVA that."
"I'm out here trying to save timelines and what's left of it! You have no idea how hard I try but time and time again, another looming event happens." Loki saw Sylvie's teary eyes and takes a deep breath before saying with emotion, "If I can't even fix all this timeline mess, how could I fix you?".
Sylvie, offended, stepped closer, hovering her machete at his neck, "Oh I need fixing? You want to fix my stubbornness? My views on the TVA? You–". Loki interrupted gently to continue, "Your broken heart."
Sylvie stared at him, not knowing how to react.
"I just wanted to get the TVA thing over with as quickly as I can, with no distractions, so that no more lives are lost, so that I can fully focus on you after... but it seems like the problems are never ending."
"Why? Why would you want to..."
"Because I meant what I said, I just want you to be okay. But when your timeline you call home is about to be destroyed with you in it, how can you be?"
"Why do you want me to be okay?"
"It's because..." He took a deep breath, his teary eyed shooting up to meet Sylvie's in an intense yet tender gaze, "I love you."
Sylvie gazed at him, a whirlwind of emotions churning within her. Her trembling hands slowly lowered the machete, the weight of the moment sinking in.
"I've never felt this way before. I had to figure out what this feeling actually was but now I'm more sure than ever that I–"
Loki felt Sylvie firmly yet tenderly grabbing his neck, where her maschete had once been hovering. He also felt her soft warm lips on his. This time, they took longer than their first kiss, truly savoring the feeling of each other's lips.
As he deepened the kiss, his strong yet gentle arms found their way to her waist, pulling her closer to him. Their bodies fit together perfectly, as if they were meant to be together from the beginning. As they broke apart, Sylvie looks up into Loki's piercing green eyes and feels a sense of warmth and acceptance that she hadn't experienced before, wash over her.
Their face were still so close, making Sylvie flustered. She pulled away from his arms, feeling her heart beating like crazy. She had to say something in this awkward silence. "I meant to stab you but I dropped my machete.", she blurted out with a smile, scrunching her nose. Loki couldn't help but find her nose scrunching and words adorable. A mischievous grin played on his lips as he responded, "Well, my dear, love is a dagger, right?" Sylvie rolled her eyes, but then something unexpected happened—soft laughter bubbled from her lips.

Time after time
As the God of Stories and Keeper of Time, there are many who would seek Loki's counsel. Some find the answers they are looking for, others do not.
Or, five people who go to Loki seeking answers for themselves, and one person who seeks an answer for Loki himself.
Rating: General | Words: 1.3K
Read below the cut, [click here for AO3]
The first one to locate him at the end of space and time, of course, is O.B.
Loki smiles as his old friend appears at the bottom of the stairs to the Tree of Time, huffs when the man nearly falls on his ass as he takes in the sight of the billions of branches that Loki guards by his will and power alone.
“Ouroboros,” Loki greets, as O.B. reaches the summit and they are face to face. “Welcome.”
“Loki,” O.B. breathes, both awed and horrified at once. He doesn’t fully grasp the meaning of Loki’s duty, but as always, seems determined to make sense of it.
“Is this really—how is it—are you okay?” O.B. finally asks, settling on asking after his well being over any questions about how all of this works. Loki feels warmth bloom in his chest at the question, and nods.
“I am,” he answers truthfully. He is more than okay. He is alive in a way he did not know was possible, he is everywhere and nowhere at once, he is lonely and yet never alone.
“Does it hurt?” O.B. asks. “How many branches are you holding?!” he adds, trying once more in vain to count the branches of time by sight alone.
Loki pauses and places. He gives O.B. a number that makes the man’s eyes go wide as dinner plates as he tries to comprehend the true meaning of infinity.
“Can I see you again?” O.B. asks later, when his time is up and his special Tempad screams at him to leave. He still has so many questions, but not enough time to ask and answer them all. It’s okay. Loki has all the time to spare.
“You are welcome anytime, old friend. Give the TVA my regards.”
--------------------------------
His second visitor is Stephen Strange. There is an active threat to his universe, and his quest for answers has brought him to Loki.
“You are not as I remember you,” Strange tells him once Loki has provided the wisdom that the man sought. “The Loki I knew would never have been able to bear this.”
Loki simply shakes his head.
“I am not the Loki you knew,” Loki says simply. “That Loki perished in the war with Thanos, and my path diverged from his long before that. ”
“A Variant then?” Strange asks. “How—”
“Your time grows short, Stephen Strange,” Loki interrupts him, sensing the fraying occurring in the man’s universe. “Go. The answers you seek shall guide you.”
Strange’s eyes widen, but he nods, and soon he is gone.
--------------------------------
His third visitor is another Loki.
“How can this possibly be our glorious purpose?!” his variant screams at him. “How could you let us be forgotten like this? What good is a throne with no subjects to love you?”
Loki shakes his head and sighs. This Loki is shortsighted and does not yet understand the weight of his responsibility. He will soon learn, one way or another.
“You never wanted the throne,” Loki tells his other self. “You will not find the answers you are looking for here.”
--------------------------------
It isn’t long before Kang the Conqueror arrives. He has come for Loki’s title, his throne, a claim that his position is his birthright, and that Loki had unfairly stolen it from him. Loki laughs. This Kang is nothing compared to the Kang he once knew. The arrogance is the same, but there is not nearly enough power to back his claims, even with the power it took to even locate Loki in the first place. He growls in frustration when he is blown back to the bottom of the stairs with barely a flick of Loki’s fingers.
“I have overcome you and your variants before, and I will again,” Loki tells Kang. “You will not find victory here today, or tomorrow…or ever, really”
“We’ll see about that,” Kang spits angrily before he stomps away, unable to do much else. From over his shoulder, Miss Minutes appears and sticks her tongue out at him.
Loki knows this is not the last he has seen of this Kang, or any Kang. They will all come for him, for the branches that make up the multiverse. They will try to do what the Kang who ruled the Sacred Timeline has done, and Loki will always be there to stop them.
--------------------------------
Though he knows he is coming, Loki is still not fully prepared when Thor appears before him. Loki knows this is not quite his Thor, his Thor still lives blissfully unaware of the multiverse, and Loki was taken from his altered timeline long before the story could play out. But this Thor is still his, in a way, and Loki feels his heart lurch and ache all the same.
Thor falls to his knees when he reaches the summit and lays on Loki for the first time.
“In the name of Odin,” Thor whispers, tears falling freely from his face. “So the wizard was right.”
“Hello brother,” Loki says, unable to keep his own tears from forming. His hands shake and the branches quiver as they parse his frayed emotions. “Although, I am not quite your brother, as you know.”
Thor shakes his head.
“In any universe, across all timelines, you are always my brother, no matter what,” Thor tells him. “And I am proud to call you so, in any universe, in any time, now and forever. I could not imagine another more worthy than you to be the guardian of time, no longer the God of Mischief, but the God of Stories. Of all stories.”
Though Loki has heard this name many times in many universes, and even from many Thors, to hear it from this Thor, his Thor, at this exact moment at the end of time, affects Loki in a way he cannot describe.
Thor presses their foreheads together and sings him a lullaby their mother often sang to them as children. When he is done, they are both a mess, and Loki is loathe to bid his brother goodbye, even knowing he cannot stay.
Parting was always such sweet sorrow.
--------------------------------
Loki smiles when his star-crossed lover appears to him.
“So this is where you’ve been hiding,” they say, looking around and taking in the branches of the Tree of Time. Their gaze is appreciative, wondrous even, at all that Loki has done. At all that he continues to do.
“Here I am,” Loki replies, unable to keep the smile off his face. It is good to see them once more. “You certainly took your time coming here.”
“Hey, it wasn't easy!” they shoot back, affronted.
Loki shrugs. “O.B. figured it out fairly quickly,” he says.
“Of course he did,” they grumble. “And then he didn’t bother to tell me how.”
Loki shakes his head. “Each traveler must find their own way here without aid,” he explains. “It is a personal journey to seek the truth at the End of Time.”
His lover-not-quite-lover hums thoughtfully. They fall to silence for a while, but it isn’t awkward. Silence between them has never been awkward.
“Are you happy, Loki?” they finally ask.
Loki considers this for a moment before he answers.
“I am content,” he finally says. “My purpose is not easy, nor is it the life I would have imagined for myself, but I would make the same choice again and again.”
His not-lover nods, seeming to finally find the answer they have been seeking. Which means it is now their time to leave. It is bittersweet.
“I would have loved you,” they confess, meeting his eyes directly. “If things were different. In another timeline, another universe, perhaps.”
Loki thinks of all the universes where that scenario is a reality and smiles.
“You already do.”
