Top 10 Perform Again Rankings
Overall, kind of a dull week, at least in comparison to last time around.
10. “Caroline” (Jenna/Kiki hip-hop), Luther Brown
Erm...okay. So...this was not good. A lot of people were blaming the choreography, but I don’t think that’s it. I think it was a mix of Luther not knowing exactly what would look good on these two, them not being hip-hop dancers whatsoever, and an overbearing concept. I appreciate that they both gave it their all in performance, but the dancing was questionable. They weren’t even dancing for the last 20 seconds. I couldn’t believe my ears when the judges praised this to the high heavens. (And this makes the second time Jenna has awkwardly danced a Luther routine. Please just give them Nappytabs next time.)
9. “Red and Black (Rojo y Negro)” (Gaby/Lex Argentine tango), Miriam and Leonardo
I wanted to like this more, but only half of it was good and the other half was good sometimes. It was nice to see Gaby dance ballroom since she didn’t do it her entire season, but Lex...could have used some more work. He did get it together towards the middle and the end when they did the more intricate flicks, but for the most part, he was kinda stomping and slipping around. The chemistry also wasn’t steamy enough. I don’t think it was horrible or anything, but I really need to Lex to get something he can shine in this week. I’m kind of scared for him.
8. “The Letting Go” (Paul/Sydney contemporary), Jaci Royal
I was shocked that this was Jaci Royal. The group routine she did in season 12 was one of the highlights, but this routine was pretty...generic. I thought there was a little too much standing/walking around at the beginning and end, and even though ti was supposed to be all tragic, I didn’t really feel anything at all. Of course Sydney is a pretty dancer, but there’s something in her performance that’s really missing and I kind of can’t believe the judges preferred this to Robert’s routine.
7. “Radha Nagechi” (Fik-shun/Dassy Bollywood), Nakul Dev Mahajan
I cannot stand when Nakul gives us this whole long story about the routine only for it to end up looking exactly like every other routine he’s ever choreographed. Where exactly was Dassy being all sexy or comparing her love to Hindu gods?? This is why I wish they’d ditch the story packages sometimes. But for what it was, it was good. They kept up the energy the whole way through, and outside of the botched lift, it looked like a lot of fun.
6. “The Man That Got Away” (Robert/Taylor Broadway), Al Blackstone
So was that standing ovation really necessary?? This was good and all, but I didn’t find it like...super innovative or outstanding. I might be biased because Broadway isn’t really my thing, but I generally like Al Blackstone’s choreography. I think I wanted the second half of the routine to be more dynamic or something. The music picked up, but I didn’t feel like anything happened other than the lift. I liked it, though. Robert a little more than Taylor. I really hope she’s challenged this week.
5. “Otherside” (Jasmine/Robert contemporary), Stacey Tookey
Nigel is crazy. There was plenty of emotion in this routine, thank you very much. I will say that I don’t think their chemistry was as strong as it could have been, but it wasn’t a chemistry vacuum or anything. I liked the concept since it was a little more creative than the typical broken love contemporaries we usually get, and I thought Stacey’s choreography was creative and made Robert look really good. I really thought he deserved to stay after this since it’s so far out of his style but he did it so well, and losing Jasmine this early in the competition should be illegal. I’m still salty about this.
4. “In the Morning” (Allison/Logan jazz fusion), Brian Friedman
We can always count of Brian to give us a wild jazz routine with wild outfits, lol. This took a few viewings to grow on me, but I really like it. The things Logan can do are absurd. Like that bit on the floor where he lifted one leg up while crouching and spun around? How do you even do that? I think he and Allison have fun chemistry together and it worked for this routine, though I do wonder how that’ll go when they have to be like...sexy or romantic. Logan looks so young...it might be a little awkward. But thus far, I’ve really enjoyed him and I hope he’s also challenged this week so we can see what else he can do.
3. “I’m Better” (Cyrus/Kaylee hip-hop), Pharside and Phoenix
I was SO RELIEVED when I saw Kaylee and Cyrus dressed as regular people for this routine. I was so scared when they said aliens lmao. But they really got it together from last week! Her and Cyrus’s personalities are a trip together. I like Kaylee more in hip-hop than contemporary tbh, and I think having Cyrus as a partner exacerbates that. This routine was also constructed in just the right way to make her look just as good as him. I worry for them if they get ballroom, which I have the strange feeling they will very soon, so fingers crossed they pull that off because I really like them and want them to stick around longer. (Just saying though, I would not have agreed to drag my hair on the floor. Can you imagine how much crap was in her hair afterwards?? Ew.)
2. “Speaking in Tongues II” (Marko/Koine African jazz), Sean Cheesman
As far as animalistic African jazz routines go, this is one of the better ones I’ve seen in a while from Sean. The stamina they must have needed to pull this of is crazy. How did they not get tangled up in each other during all those flips?? How do you count to this type of music? Pretty much this just seemed really difficult but they pulled it off seamlessly except for a tiny little stumble that Marco had during one of their partnering moments. Even though this was still technically in her wheelhouse, I feel like we saw a different side to Koine. Now hopefully she gets something completely different this week and slays because I love her.
I just realized that my top two dances are the same couples from last time. Whoops.

@sydneytormey you constantly blow me away with your incredible talent, fierce determination, and contagious personality. While I am very sad that you were eliminated on SYTYCD tonight, I know that this is only the beginning of your journey. You were my favorite contestant of this season, and I've been a huge fan of yours for over a year now ever since I saw your solo at NYCDA. Everything about you is flawless from your amazing technique and crazy ballroom skills to your incredibly sweet spirit- you light up every room you walk into and deserve everything you accomplish. I can't wait to continue following you overtime and hopefully some day I'll be able to meet you! You inspire so many people, and make your friends and family so proud ❤️❤️❤️

#16: “Hey Pachuco!” (Top 9, Broadway) - Chris Baldock
I love this song, so I was very excited when the dance began. I was a bit underwhelmed once I actually watched the routine, though. This looked like a difficult piece to do, especially for the women, and unfortunately it came out to be kind of a mess in some parts. Overall, their energy was good, though, and I like the choreography, so that’s why this makes it up this high, despite the obvious flaws.
Out of the guys, I was surprised to see Kiki so heavily featured. He was a mess outside of his style at this point, so I assumed he’d be hidden in the back. I’m glad he wasn’t, though, because he did great with this. He has the right energy, and his moves are very sharp. In retrospect, I should have guessed that he’d do fine with this, because Broadway borrows a lot of elements from Ballroom. Lex and Logan also do really well, but that’s no surprise. I feel like Mark probably did well also, but I couldn’t tell you since they refused to give him any camera time on this number (*eye roll*).
As for the women, I think Sydney was the standout. She did great here, so I guess this choreography really suited the Ballroom dancers. There some synchronicity issues that were particularly noticeable in the women’s sections, though. The transition steps in their opening section weren’t really together, and looks like Taylor feel out of the side aerial in her section with Sydney and Kaylee. (understandable considering the heels). This was a good group number, but it could have used some extra time for cleaning, especially considering they did multiple takes of this and still weren’t able to get the perfect shot.

SYTYCD14 - top 10 perform
So we fiiiiinally found out our top 10. Well, officially. I found a blog that had spoilers and just checked out the list without guilt. All pretty predictable picks.
“The most intense Academy week we’ve ever seen.” Okay Cat’s scriptwriter, sure. We’ve only had two versions of the Academy and one was for kids so I don’t think we can bring out the superlatives yet.
The opening number is ok. Probably nothing will ever top Puttin On The Ritz.
I forgot the judges existed in the last three weeks.
The way the revealed the top ten was very underwhelming so I’ll just get into the dances.
Dassy Lee and Fik-shun - They were slightly out of sync a few times and sometimes you can see that Fik-Shun is sharper than Dassy, but otherwise this is a great number. Dassy has a brilliant personality that shines on stage and is well complemented by Fik-shun’s. Mary says Fik-shun has met his match. Nigel makes a terrible Seoul/soul pun.
Logan Hernandez and Audrey Case (filling in for Allison) - Allison injured a shoulder, but before that, she picked Logan over Zachary Gibson. It’s already Zachary’s second time in the green mile, but Logan has more room to grow on the show I guess. And Zachary is on Cats now anyways. I loved the choreography in this piece by Tyce Diorio.
Chris “Kiki” Nyemchek and Jenna - Way to go Kiki, from nearly not auditioning at all to botching the first academy choreo round to finally being Jenna’s pick over initial hot ticket Konkrete. I suppose ultimately Jenna isn’t as well equipped to help Kevin as she is to help Kiki. The costume team didn’t fit his pants the best, but Kiki looked great. Very clean dancer. I never really thought of this song for a ballroom number but seeing this dance, it just made sense.
Kaylee Mills and Cyrus - Who designed Kaylee’s dress? The shoulder straps are hideous. Choosing someone with a far different style from his is a risk for Cyrus, but I think both Kaylee and Cyrus like the challenge. They can learn from each other. The dance was nice to watch in the moment but maybe not the most memorable this week.
Lex Ishimoto and Gaby - Gaby got some of the most all-rounded dancers on her team during the Academy. Personally I think she’s one of if not the smartest all-star in her pickings. I think it could have gone either way, but I’m not surprised she chose Lex because he got more screentime than Evan. This dance reminded me why I LOVE Anthony Morigerato. It was very charming. I love how there were hints of other styles in there. I have no idea what Mary is saying but I agree with the gist of it - I can see Lex going all the way.
Mark Villaver and Comfort - I had the impression Mark specialised in lyrical hip hop so I was pleasantly surprised to see him have so much swag - especially considering the costume team made him wear an apron cut from a trash bag. Comfort is part of that extremely rare breed of people who can pull off green lipstick.
Koine Iwasaki and Marko - I really loved Marko’s remaining two. Practically speaking, Koine is better height matched. I mean, look at Sophia’s legs. They look longer than Marko himself LOL. This dance and the lighting was gorgeous, but not as gorgeous as Koine’s dress. DON’T MAKE IT AWKWARD NIGEL WHAT THE HECK. Leave the matchmaking to after you retire.
Sydney Tormey and Paul - Why do you waste this couple on Val why why why but at least cha cha is one the styles he is better in. There was one moment where Sydney had to sort of squat and transfer her weight while flipping her hair and/or doing a body wave and it looked pretty awkward. Otherwise it was a good number, but I would remember the other ballroom dance from this week more.
Taylor Sieve and Robert - why is everyone acting so confused about who Taylor is? She got quite a bit of coverage throughout academy week. Unlike Johnathan, who we didn’t see since auditions at all. Easy guess who Robert picked. Wow Travis Wall, way to start a dance, with that drop. This piece was haunting, and the transitions were artfully choreographed. It was nice to watch. But I dunno why Cat said we would cry.
Every time Vanessa says ‘stupendous’ I just cringe.
Robert Green and Jasmine H - Where does Robert get his clothes?????? In case you don’t remember, he is the guy who auditioned in a transparent raincoat thingy and later wore cartoon egg-printed pants during academy. Howard looks like he could be Winn Schott’s taller brother on Supergirl. I don’t know what the point of the red hankerchief is. Also, they were spray dubious looking blue chemicals at each other’s faces!!!?????? Is no one concerned??? But man Robert is entertaining. Jasmine has AMAZING stage presence, but Robert managed to keep my eyes on him.
Before we end we have a top ten + all stars group number by Wade&AmandaRobson and Tony Tester. I couldn’t see what was going on in the first part with the terrible blue lighting, and I don’t really get what was happening even when I could see, but the dance was fascinating to watch and the music was funky.
And that’s it for our first season 14 live show! How do you feel about this season so far? Let free to voice your thoughts in the ask box.
