I don’t put myself in the ‘cricket tragic’ category, but I do love Test Cricket.
Lovely dawn colours over the light towers of the Sydney Cricket Ground ahead of a somewhat sultry day.
For those who don’t follow the game, this will be an Indian Summer.

Australia sealed a series victory against Pakistan in the second T20I at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday, with a clinical 13-run win, thanks to a stunning bowling performance by Spencer Johnson. Chasing a modest target of 148 runs, Pakistan were bowled out for 134 runs, with Johnson taking five wickets in a match-changing display.

There's a long history of Dracula adaptations clearly made by people who have never read the book.
I think in this fine tradition you specifically should adapt the Beetle without reading it
You are SO right, anon. I am going to direct the movie version of The Beetle upon which all other adaptations will be based! It will full of iconic quotes that are not in the book and I will butcher all the themes and characters!
Initial thoughts:
-Robert Holt will be played by some no-name actor who is putting his entire heart, soul and mind into the performance. The Brick Guy is also played by this guy. The first part of the movie is filmed in a very straightforward period-drama style, with the exception of a Carpet Scene, which is filmed in soft focus like a "flashback to dead wife" scene.
-Robert will also of course be referred to as "Bobert" and wear jorts. Alas, he does not get a GAP sweatshirt or a slushie in this version because there are no Ordinary Solicitors to save him.
-The Beetle will be portrayed as just a beetle of varying sizes, and they will be CGI. Specifically the really low-budget bad CGI of the early 2000s. This is very important for my artistic vision.
-Paul Lessingham will also be CGI.
-The cat will be a real cat, and will be voiced by the guy who voiced Garfield from the 1990s Garfield and Friends cartoon.
-I am open to casting suggestions for Sydney Atherton, although again, I suspect that it would be best to forgo celebrities and cast a guy who has played the comic-relief guy in Oklahoma at community theater one too many times. I will change nothing about Sydney Atherton's atrocities, and will in fact probably add a few more, but all the other characters will say how manly and wonderful he is while he's like beating someone to death with a cricket bat in the background. The movie critics will read a lot into this directing choice.
-I will make Marjorie and Dora both girlbosses™ by giving each of them a sword and a multi-level marketing business. They will contribute nothing to the plot and I will be offended if people think they are bland characters.
-I don't really know the other characters, so they will be played by a gender-inclusive rotating cast, and everyone will keep mixing up their names. The goal is for it to be impossible to keep track of who's doing what at all times.
-The cat still dies but goes to Cat Heaven and there's a whole musical dream sequence (inspired by 1930s cartoons and musical numbers from Gene Kelly movies) about the cat having a really great time in Cat Heaven.
-During some mundane scene with this rotating cast of characters and CGI Paul Lessingham, Bobert will dramatically die of starvation in the background. Nobody notices.
-The train crash will be on-screen instead of off, and there will be a very long monologue from the train themself as they dramatically fall off a broken bridge (this will be a practical effect with a full-sized train). This monologue will be delivered by the same guy who plays the cat, and if the actor isn't crying real tears by the end, we will redo the take until we get it. There will be a lot of montaging and soft focus. We will give the train a tragic backstory, but the train is also kind of accepting of their fate, you know? The book of Ecclesiastes will probably be mentioned somewhere in here.
-I will be diverging from canon by having Sydney Atherton die in the train crash. Not from the train, though, he chokes on a shrimp cocktail moments before the train hits the ground.
-Credits roll
-Epilogue scene: Sydney Atherton ends up in Cat Heaven and all the cats jump on him like the hyenas at the end of Lion King and there's just a giant wriggling ball of cats. Bobert is there too, drinking a slushie in the background. Hard cut to black.

Mapping Melbourne (Week 14)
When I initially started planning the trip, I struggled to find a good itinerary online. Beyond Queen Victoria Markets and the National Gallery of Victoria, the majority of recommendations were to visit streets and cafes, or activities that you couldn’t quite get the essence of online. Sure, a street is pretty and well-known, but how much time should I allot to visiting it?? I can only buy so many renowned Melbourne coffees. Answers to my questions were few and far between. Needless to say, figuring out the number of days to spend in Melbourne and coinciding adventures was more difficult than I’d like to admit. But, if it’s two things I learned from the trip, it’s that you’ll find adventure if you look for it and always schedule in free time to look for it!
To make matters worse, just before we called an Uber to the airport, we got an email saying our flight was canceled. Jetstar, the cheapest airline to get around Australia, had worked out pretty well for us until that moment, but from what we heard from other travelers, we knew it was just a matter of time before a flight of ours got canceled. We were able to move the flight to the next morning for free, but lost half a day of our trip. Even more inspired to pack our time there, we found out there was a rugby match in melbourne that evening. Melbourne is known for its sports scene as the annual host of the Australian Open, Australian Grand Prix (F1 races), as well as countless cricket, rugby, and Australian football matches in its famous Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) stadium. I had wanted to watch a rugby match for the longest time, so I was more than excited. The crowd was electric. It was the Melbourne Storm vs the Brisbane Broncos, two of the biggest Australian cities, so tensions were high. I won't get into the details of how rugby is played, but in simple terms, it’s not too different from American football except for the fact that players can only throw the ball backwards (like laterals in football) and they wear virtually no padding or helmets! The two 40-minute halves are also played with no timeouts or ad breaks, so the game doesn’t have the constant (and annoying) pauses which make American football feel never-ending. Needless to say, we were thoroughly entertained.
The next day we got breakfast at one of Melbourne’s most famous cafes and breakfast spots, Seven Seeds, where I enjoyed a pourover coffee with notes of peaches and pineapple as well as an egg dish that still pops up in my dreams.
Breakfast was followed by a walk through the Queen Victoria Markets, a walk along the river, and then a visit to the National Gallery of Victoria. I personally loved the gallery which had a variety of different exhibits ranging from robot dogs walking around a room to walls full of peoples’ confessions. I returned the next day to continue my exploration of the gallery.
Here is a picture of one of the concession walls:
And here is a robot dog looking at some of its observers:
On a walking tour around the city, we learned that Melbourne used to be called Batmania after John Batman who claimed to have founded the city in 1835. We also enjoyed the Carlton Gardens, visited and learned about a prison that was converted into a university, and ended with a great view of the city.
As much as I loved Melbourne and it’s unique ability to combine the city feel of Chicago with the cafe and food scene of Paris, the visit reaffirmed my bond with Sydney.
^ me at DeGraves street - a fun little street and popular destination for coffee-lovers.

Fans celebrated in central Melbourne this week after a national triumph: The Matildas, the Australian women’s soccer team, had defeated Canada, the reigning Olympic champion, 4-0.
It was a glorious victory after a dismal start to the Women’s World Cup for one of the two host teams. In Federation Square, Australians held up gold and green scarves and bellowed, “Up the Matildas!”
Two years earlier, the same city had seen a similar outpouring of support for the Australian women’s cricket team. Inside Melbourne Cricket Ground, more than 86,000 people had gathered to watch the final of the Women’s T20 World Cup, while 1.2 million people tuned in from elsewhere in Australia.
For Ellyse Perry, an Australian sporting legend who has represented the country in both the cricket and soccer World Cups, the 2020 match — the largest crowd ever to watch a women’s cricket match — was a milestone for women’s sports in Australia.
“It’s really now starting to become embedded in general society, and it’s commonplace,” she said. “We don’t think differently about it. It’s not an oddity any more.”
For as long as there have been sports in Australia, women have clamored to play and participate. What is believed to be the world’s first cycling race for women took place in Sydney in 1888; the country’s first golf championship, in 1894, was women only; and at the 1912 Olympics, Australian women won silver and gold in the first women’s Olympic freestyle race.
Yet even though Australian women’s sports have an extensive and proud history, only recently have they received significant mainstream support. A strong run in the World Cup — Australia will face Denmark in the round of 16 on Monday — was seen as an opportunity to change that, to cement the place of women’s sports in the country’s daily rhythms and conversation.

Sam Kerr, the Matildas star who is widely regarded as one of the best players in the world, said the impact of the tournament on women’s soccer was all but unimaginable.
“For years to come, this will be talked about — hopefully, decades to come,” she told reporters last month, citing an uptick in young boys and girls coming to women’s soccer games.
A longer view on the history of women’s sports in Australia involves many moments of triumph, but also times when able and enthusiastic sportswomen were simply shut out.
“There are peaks and troughs all the way through,” Marion Stell, a historian at the University of Queensland, said of women’s sports in Australia. “Women make advances — but then it goes away again. It’s never a smooth upward curve.”
Only in the past couple of decades had female athletes been able to make consistent strides on pay, opportunities and representation, she added. Today, half of all Australian girls play sports at least once a week, according to the Australian Sports Commission, compared with about 30 percent of girls in the United States.
“I don’t think anyone would have dreamed that it would happen so quickly,” Dr. Stell said. “On one hand, it’s been very slow. But on the other hand, when it happened, the floodgates just opened.”
Yet despite their enthusiasm, and their prodigious talent for bringing home Olympic medals, female athletes in Australia have, like their international peers, historically been sidelined, blocked or simply not taken seriously.
In 1980, women’s sports made up about 2 percent of print sports coverage in Australia. By 2009, women’s sports made up about 9 percent of television news coverage, according to a report from the Australian Sports Commission. But the balance appears to be shifting: A poll last year found that nearly 70 percent of Australians had watched more women’s sports since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.
Fans watching the Australia-Ireland match in Melbourne on the World Cup’s opening night.Credit...Hannah Mckay/Reuters“A lot of it has been in line with the way that social perception has changed more broadly, in terms of how we perceive women’s role in society, and particularly the workplace,” said Perry, the sports star.
Dr. Stell, the historian, pointed further back. She saw the 1976 Montreal Olympics, where Australia failed to win a single gold medal, as a turning point. The country’s lackluster performance spurred a significant backlash in the Australian news media, which described the results as a “crisis for the government” and called for action for Australia to “regain its lost athletic potency.”
Women had historically been something of a golden goose for Australia at the Olympics, making up a minority of the country’s total athletes but often winning the majority of its medals. At the 1972 Games in Munich, for instance, 10 out of 17 Australian medals were won by women, even as they made up only about 17 percent of the team.
And so in 1981, Australia established the Australian Institute of Sport, a high-performance sports training center for both men and women that, for the first time, gave women the financial support to concentrate on their sports full-time — beginning with Australian rules football, basketball, gymnastics, netball, swimming, tennis, track and field and weight lifting.
That was followed a few years later by the Sex Discrimination Act, which prohibited discrimination on the basis of gender or sexuality.
“Those two things together might be some kind of watershed,” Dr. Stell said. “But not, I guess, in the public imagination — more in sporting women’s lives.”

Even after that, female athletes in most other sports often had no alternative but to play in a semiprofessional capacity. In the mid-1990s, as male Australian cricket players were on the cusp of striking over what they felt was inadequate remuneration, female players in the sport barely had their expenses covered, and often had to pay their own way to compete. Most juggled jobs and other commitments alongside their sports careers.
“How did it make me feel? I just wanted to play as much cricket as I possibly could,” said Belinda Clark, who was the captain of Australia’s World Cup-winning women’s cricket teams in 1997 and 2005.
She added: “We all structured our lives — our working lives and our personal lives — around being able to do that. That comes at a financial cost. We all accepted that.”
In recent decades, cricket has led the charge on fair pay for female athletes in Australia. While male cricketers still significantly out-earn their female counterparts, the majority of female players earn at least 100,000 Australian dollars, or $66,000. By comparison, female players of Australian rules football, rugby league, netball and professional soccer have a minimum salary of less than half of that — a source of ongoing tension since it is far below the country’s living wage.
Across all sports, perhaps the most important factor for female athletes was having women in positions of responsibility across journalism, management, coaching, umpiring and administration, Dr. Stell said.
In the early 1980s, Australian universities began to offer the country’s first sports management degrees. “That kind of allowed women to get a kind of professional qualification so that they could take the administration of sports off the kitchen table and make it more professional,” she said.

Women are gradually becoming more visible as sports people in Australia. But it was not until earlier this year that a female cricket player was celebrated in statue form for the first time, though the country claims more than 70 statues of male players.
A bronze statue of Clark was unveiled at Sydney Cricket Ground in January; it is the first public statue of any female cricket player anywhere in the world. Representation of that kind sends a powerful message, especially to younger players, Clark said.
“What are the photos in the club? Who’s on the honor boards? What are we saying to the people that walk in this door?” she asked. “Are you part of this, or are you a guest or a visitor?
“It symbolizes that you’re actually part of it. You’re no longer coming, cap in hand, to beg for an opportunity.”

Saturday 14th January 2023
Heavy rain overnight and grey skies when we awoke. Rain is still plaguing this whole continent with flooding still very bad in Kimberly WA. However my highly trusty, never accurate, weather app assured us that things were on the up. Big red letter day today because as you all know it's unlimited capped transport in NSW on a Saturday and Sunday. So we had to grab this one despite the ravages of inflation which has rocketed the capped price from 2 dollars 50 to 8 dollars 40! Determined to get our money's worth we set off in t shirts with complete faith the weather would hold good. So to get the most for 8.40 our schedule was as follows:
173x bus to the city centre. The sun was coming through the clouds as we crossed the bridge. A Holland America Line ship was in Circular Quay as we passed.
Reaching Wynyard station we switched to the new Alstom tram heading along George Street. Last time we were here 4 years ago, the track was only just being laid in the deep scars along this old street. Now it is complete and working. This took us to Randwick passing the Sydney Cricket Ground and horse racing tracks along the way.
We then transferred to the 373 bus bound for Coogee Beach whereupon we walked the 6k coastal path to the popular Bondi Beach. Not too sure what the attraction is with this place since we have seen far better beaches in Australia than this one, but maybe that's just personal choice. Quite a nice walk although we were not alone! Not exactly a Cornish coast line, but pretty in its own way with its coves and inlets.
Bus 380 to the main event. Watson Bay. This is the third time here (2017, 2019 and now); fantastic place and for 2 reasons. 1/ lovely location with great views across the harbour to Sydney City centre. 2/ the best fish and chips restaurant on the planet, Doyles. Look it up. So we sat and ate Hake and Chips washed down with a very palatable Riesling looking out across the sun shimmering waters with the Sydney skyline way in the distance. Pure magic. Top tip to visit this place if passing.
To finish the day we sailed off on the 5.15pm ferry bound for Circular Quay to transfer to the ferry to Manly. Call into Coles for a top up of Tim Tams (salted caramel) and then the 144 bus home.
What a great day all for 8 dollars 40 each. (about 5 quid). Oh and 41 dollars for the fish and chips.
ps Bandicoots are performing early tonight.

The Indian cricketers will be practicing at the WACA ground over the next week, trying to acclimatise to the conditions and pitches. It is always challenging for visiting teams to tour Down Under. The Indians did find it tough as it took them 71 years after their first tour Down Under in 1947-48 to win a Test series on Australian soil. Virat Kohli led side defeated the Aussies in 2018-19. Take for instance, Perth, the venue for the first Test of the series. The West Australian city experiences some of the hottest temperatures in the country, with the sun so intense that it can cause devices to overheat and shut down. Heat exhaustion is a real concern for photographers working on the ground, especially during long, hot days at the old WACA or Optus Stadium. The oppressive conditions not only make it difficult for journalists, but also for players and spectators. Even in other cities like Adelaide and Melbourne, where the weather is generally more temperate, sudden temperature drops can be a serious challenge. It is not unusual for someone to leave their hotel room in Melbourne wearing shorts and a T-shirt, only to find that the temperature has plummeted by 20°C in a matter of hours. Another challenge of covering cricket Down Under are the vast distances that needs to be covered from one city to another given the nature of its landscape. A flight from Sydney to Perth, for instance, is a nearly 4,000-kilometre journey—about the same as flying halfway from India to London. Domestic travel across the country is also lengthy, and this can be exhausting for journalists covering multiple matches over the course of a long season. Debasis Sen in Australia (PC: Debasis Sen) Even between other major cities, flights are often over two hours long. The sheer travel fatigue can be overwhelming, and the need to adapt to different time zones and climates makes the job even harder. In the past, food had been a significant challenge for anyone from the subcontinent covering cricket in Australia. The touring Indian media in the past often had to contend with limited culinary options, especially in smaller cities. However, this has changed significantly in recent years, particularly with the rise of Indian restaurants and food culture. Today, in nearly every major city in Australia, you will find a wealth of high-quality Indian restaurants. Covering cricket in Australia is an exciting and dynamic experience, but it comes with its own set of unique challenges. From the harsh weather conditions to the vast distances, the physical and logistical demands on travelling media are immense. However, the country’s passionate cricket culture makes it a rewarding place to cover the sport. The challenges are outweighed by the thrills of experiencing world-class cricket in one of the most diverse and stunning countries on the planet.
