Trixie Laumonte: photos from a 50-year career

During her almost 50-year drag career, Trixie Laumonte was one of Australia’s most visible trans women. 🏳️‍⚧️

She began in entertainment at Les Girls as a 15-year-old. Like many early Les Girls, she carried for a lifetime the lessons she learned there on dance, costume and holding an audience. Even in her later years, when younger queens marvelled that a drag performer could get away with slacks and flats onstage, Trixie never looked less than spectacular.

Trixie Laumonte’s family arrived in Australia from England when she was just 10. The family thrived in their new home but at 14, Trixie was expelled from her Sydney school for effeminacy.

“I was always feminine, a wrist-flapper from way back.

“But I always liked sport and at school played all the normal boys games like soccer.”

Putting school behind her, Trixie worked as a waiter and, within a few months, joined the cast of Les Girls.

“Mum said to me she had noticed I was very much like a girl and that I was looking at boys the way a girl would.

“She said that if I thought I would be happier as a girl, then she and Dad would help me.

“They went with me to buy a whole new set of clothes, and then they took me to doctors to start the treatment that was required.”

At the time of that interview, Trixie was about to undergo surgery to replace her silicone breast implants with a more modern substance.

“[The silicone] takes its temperature not from your body but from the outside temperature. So, it it’s a cold night, you have cold, hard tits!”

Anyone who ever met Trixie can no doubt hear her voice saying ‘cold, hard tits’.

No worries!! I totally don't mind responding to this.

Quick background is that I am currently moving to a new apartment in a few days. I've had the same roommate for basically a decade and so this means I'm replacing things that she bought, but I didn't, or things which are now ten years old. I might be mentioning prices being $$$ but I agree! Investments are totally worth it!

...It's just that I've bought a new mattress/bed frame, I'm stocking a new kitchen soon, and I also bought a new (used) car so I am....overwhelmed to say the least lmao. Probably if I hadn't spent thousands of dollars trying to move, furnish a place, and obtain a car, I would be less anxious. 😂😅 A lot of that is me whining about how expensive everything is because I'm having to like...obtain so many things and finding them used or discounted takes a lot of time + energy.

Okay that out of the way: "ceramic non-stick" isn't actual ceramic. Sort of.

I've talked on this blog before about how Porcelain is more similar to Glass than your average earthenware is. This is because Porcelain is vitrified, which basically means it's heated at a temperature so high that it kinda creates glassy bonds on the structural level. When you break it, it looks more like a glass shard.

Likewise, glass can be classified in a few ways:

1. By the materials used to make something (in which case, glass is not made from shaped and fired clay, and is therefore different from pottery).

2. By just structural differences (glass is a non-crystalline amorphous solid, pottery is a crystalline solid.)

3. Like a material scientist, in which case: glass is a type of ceramic. "Glasses are a unique range of ceramic materials defined principally by their atomic structure."

Yeah. Glass is a type of ceramic. (Note that the big taxonomy here is natural, metal, ceramic, and plastic. Glass is under "ceramic.") That's a definition from the UNSW Sydney school of Materials Science and Engineering meant for high school outreach. There's also a category of things called ceramic-glass which sort of blurs the space between the two materials even further, insofar as there are some differences between say, a ceramic plate and a glass cup.

To cut to the chase, porcelain uses kaolin clay, which is a heavily silicate clay. Glass also uses like, sand and silica to get made.

So ceramic based non-stick isn't clay, per se. It's a silicon coating — silicon oxide, aka silica. I've seen a LOT of websites call this silicone with an e, and there's a difference.

Silicon is an abundant natural element (Si) which is typically found in its form as Silica. You almost never see pure Silicon.

Silica is SiO2, and you probably know it from sand.

Or from those little DO NOT EAT desiccant packets with the clear granules inside. Silica is used to make glass and ceramic.

Silicone is the squishy stuff that is similar to rubber. (This manufacturer has a whole page on it). I remember the difference because silicone can make for a breast implant, but silica (a form of silicon) which is basically sand, would be a terrible breast implant. I know that's weird. 😂

okay so circling back: ceramic coated pots and pans are coated with a type of silicon (silica), which is technically how you make glass, which is actually a ceramic. Confusing, right? I found this article that says the silica is applied using a sol-gel process, making it naturally derived. (Apparently silica can be derived from rice husk ash? Huh.)

But the good news is this: it doesn't have any clay in it, or even any glaze, so it technically shouldn't have any lead! Hooray!(?) Also bonus: silica is already in everything and has been for millennia (glass!), so we have reason to believe it's probably fine with a track record!

However, the drawbacks:

Very hard to find information about this process in actual manufacture, and if people are doing it correctly/safely. But that's true of everything.

Ceramic coated cooking materials shouldn't reach temperatures above 4-500 degrees F, because they're not built to withstand very high heat. If you want to pan sear a bunch of stuff, use stainless steel, carbon steel, or cast iron.

It's not completely nonstick the way nonstick (PTFE) is. It's just...slightly less sticky. But if you follow the care instructions of your ceramic coated items, it should be fine and work well. (Reiterating that Teflon is just a trademark name for a type of PTFE Nonstick coating. Similar to how Lycra is a branded name of spandex, which is also sometimes labeled as elastane. Incidentally both Lycra and Teflon were invented by the DuPont company.)

It's probably less durable/long lasting than ptfe nonstick. But it should still last you a little while, and it feels a bit unfair to compare the longevity of anything to a forever-chemical based coating, lmfao. (IMHO)

This Future Proof video is mostly good (they conflate silicone/silicon a bit by accident and make it sound like "ceramic coating" is a total marketing lie. It's...not, it's materials engineering speak lol), but they do explore what's in the materials and what we do or don't know already.

As for stainless steel:

It can leech chromium and nickel, but that study abstract implies the side effects are like..."dermatitis". This can be a bigger issue if you're allergic to metals (my mother), or have eczema. Both chromium and nickel appear in food and water already, so there's no way around it completely. However this is something to consider regarding factory worker exposure! Idk what this means!

Also finding info is hard. Like this page is helpful but also very clearly marketing for Heritage Steel lol.

The real issue would be direct exposure to aluminum (often a core in pots and pans, there should be layers between that and your food!). I feel like stainless steel, carbon steel, and cast iron are all probably the best options, although I have ceramic coated pans and feel comfortable with them. They're holding up okay. I don't have all the information about them, but I also suspect they're wayyy less harmful than PTFE Nonstick.

So in terms of a rice cooker, I feel way more comfortable with ceramic or stainless steel inserts. I love the charm of the Tatung, but I do want to be able to have a timer.

Also a safe no-lead full ceramic is the old school (no button) way to do things!

I've been looking around and it sounds like in China this is more of a a regional style still sometimes used 煲仔飯 - Clay Pot Rice, and is Cantonese. The link says you get 飯焦（饭焦）rice, so sounds like a little similar to the crispy parts of tahdig!

Okay but I'm going in circles about what rice cooker to buy. I've always wanted a zojirushi but I've found out they're allll nonstick inserts with pfas chemicals, there's no like, ceramic or stainless steel insert options.

So now I'm looking at Yum Asia (ceramic insert) or Reishunger (also ceramic)....
