NEW DELHI: A trip to much of Europe has gone costlier from Sunday with increase in Schengen visa fees to Euro 80 from the current Euro 60, officials said. A Schengen visa is needed to visit 26 European countries, including Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Switzerland and Spain. “The visa fee increases from Euro 60 to Euro 80. This increase is the first one since 2006,” an European Union (EU) official told PTI. The increase in the visa fee comes as an updated Schengen Visa Code takes effect from February 2 this year. It brings the fee in line with the level where it would be today if it had been aligned to the general EU-wide inflation rate since 2006, they said. “The increased visa fee will provide member states with additional financial resources to process visa applications quickly and more efficiently. By international standards, the visa fee remains low,” the official said. For regular travellers, the fee increase is offset by the new rules on long-validity visas. These travellers may actually save money under the new provisions, since they have to apply for visas less often, they said. Visa fee is still waived for children below six-years-old (as it was the case in the previous rules). “The visa fee for minors between the age group of 6 and 12 years remains half of the general fee, and thus increases by Euro 5 (to Euro 40),” the official said. In addition, it is now possible for member states to waive the visa fee for minors between the age group of 6 and 18 years under the new visa regime. According to the latest exchange rates, a Euro is equivalent to Rs 79.37. People can now apply for the Schengen visa six months before the intended date of travel to Europe instead of three months timeline. The minimum time period will now be nine months for seafarers, they said. In addition to this, frequent travellers with a positive visa history are to be granted multiple-entry visa with a gradually increasing validity period from one year to a maximum of five years, which will save applicants time and money, the official said. For instance, an applicant who has obtained and used correctly three visas within two years would be granted during this period a multiple-entry visa valid for one year. The Safe Nomad (2). Vanessa Jater’s one month crash-course in everything

Happy, calm and barefoot. Colombian digital nomad Vanessa Jater on planning freedom and building an inner home.

Vanessa is 28 but looks at least 5 years younger. It might be the yoga she practices every day, it might be her dietary discipline, it might be her positive and bright attitude towards life or a combination of the three. As a matter of fact, Vanessa looks so young that, upon our first encounter, I wondered aloud how she was allowed to travel without an adult supervisor. She laughed and so our conversation began lightheartedly.

A broker breaks free

For 5 years at University in her native Colombia, Vanessa studied finance and dreamed of becoming a successful broker or Forex trader. After graduation, she applied for an internship with the Colombian Chamber of Commerce in Spain. She fell in love with the country and after the first year she needed a reason to extend her visa, so she began studying yoga, NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). That gave her three more years abroad and a glimpse into what her future might look like.

During her time in Spain, Vanessa broke up with her boyfriend and bought a one-way ticket to New Delhi under a very strong impulse she needed to do something a bit more outlandish. While in India, she improved her yoga skills, studied meditation, spent time in an Osho retreat and volunteered for 3 months in Nepal.

Upon her return to Spain in 2012 she became acquainted with a spiritual mentorship group from Russia, who were touring in Western Europe. She became their translator and traveled with them to Germany, then to a retreat on the shores of Lake Baikal in Russia, where she had the chance to teach yoga for the first time. A couple of ex-university colleagues attended the retreat and, seeing the potential, invited Vanessa to be a full-time resident yoga teacher for a luxury boutique hotel in Tulum, on the Mexican Riviera Maya. She said yes and spent one year in Mexico, working hard and saving money for future trips. She didn’t feel like settling.

After the first full tourist season was over, Vanessa hopped on a plane again and crossed the Atlantic to visit Spain, Switzerland (where her father had moved in the meantime), Lebanon (to visit some not-so-distant relatives), then spent 50 more days in Nepal practicing Buddhist meditation. It’s there where she met a French woman who asked her: “Why go back to Mexico? Better travel to Thailand, there’s this island called Phangan, you will love it.” It was November 2016 and, after a quick trip back to her father in Switzerland, and a tour of South East Asia – Bangkok, Singapore – she made landfall in Koh Phangan at the beginning of this year.

With a little help from my nomadic friends

A personal note: I used to live on Koh Phangan for 18 months between 2009 and 2011 and I must say that this island had everything one could ever wish: amazing nature, fantastic beaches, good food, unparalleled nightlife and a very special vibe that makes it so popular with spiritual, creative people. I would have never left the island but for one reason: the Internet connection back then was terrible and I could not do my work properly. It used to take me half a day to upload an article like this one.

However, things have slowly improved and since the opening of the Beachub co-working space adjacent to the Sri Thanu Beach in March 2016, Koh Phangan became attractive for digital nomads. It’s where Vanessa’s transformation happened. It’s where I met her on a rainy afternoon.

“The money was scarce and my boss in Mexico was expecting me back, but I knew that I had more to do in Asia. So in February (which was when I was supposed to resume my work in Tulum) I made it public on Facebook that I was to run an online yoga course starting March 9th. I chose that very date because it seemed astrologically auspicious. I planned a full 3-week course including meditation, physical yoga, breathing exercises, yoga theory and philosophy.

A one month crash-course in everything.

I had to set up an online platform, create and upload videos, podcasts, reading materials and a 24/7 support channel so I could be in touch with my students whenever they needed me. Although I was fully trained to teach all these things in real life, I lacked the technical skills required to put my knowledge into an online product. I did not have the budget to hire skilled people. I didn’t even have a camera!”

The next 30 days were the craziest in Vanessa’s life. She had to find help. The guys at Beachub allowed her to use the premises (and fast Wi-Fi) for free until she got herself on track. Fortunately, a couple of videographer friends needed a model to test their new equipment, so she got the raw footage for free. But the rest she had to work and learn by herself.

“I learned video editing, audio editing, e-mail marketing, social marketing and visitor-tracking, a little bit of coding and much more in such a short time. I had entire weeks with only two hours of sleep per night. Sometimes, at 3 AM I was the only human being at the Beachub, doing handstands to boost my energy level. No time to sleep or to procrastinate. I had 58 people interested in the course out of which 18 signed up. I had to deliver what I promised. That month was a crash course in everything.”

Her fellow digital nomads helped a lot.

“These guys understand the meaning of hard work. If they see you busy doing something on your laptop they assume you’re doing something important and never bother you. But if they see you worried or asking around, they would jump off their hammocks to give you help and advice. I learned a lot from them and am very thankful.”

Eventually, the 3-week course was a success and Vanessa had all the reasons to be content: she built a project out of nothing, learned a lot of new skills and made some money in the process.

What next? How to plan freedom.

‘I want to keep traveling. There’s a summer retreat in Estonia which I really want to attend, but before that, I want to look into my online yoga course and perfect it. I don’t see it as a source of income anymore, rather a tool for self-understanding and evolution.

My family – although well-traveled and currently spread across the world – likes to plan everything in detail: from where they go on their next holiday to what books they are going to read this year. I’m not like that and I must admit that there’s a lot of uncertainty in my life because I never know what I’ll do next. But I don’t complain: look around at this beautiful place, the beach, the ocean, the trees and flowers, the chirping of birds, we are so lucky to call this a “workplace”. We should walk happy, calm and barefoot through this life.’

What helps Vanessa do her thing and feel protected?

‘The past few months brought me very close to meditation which gives me peace of mind, balance and helps me trust my intuition. When I start freaking out about what’s next, I meditate, I sit and talk with myself, I write it all down and explore where the problem is and how I should deal with it.

You see, everything we have “for sale” is actually a part of us that we give away to the world. We need to clarify our intentions: what do we actually give and why? I, for example, want to develop a way of sharing the best things that I’ve ever learned in order to make other peoples’ livesbetter.  When my intentions are 100% pure, completely free of greed or vanity, I have no doubts that whatever I have to give to the world will be well understood and received. This makes me feel secure.

Maybe I won’t do this forever. I will need a place of my own at some point. But before I settle, I feel I need to make something of myself, build a sense of self that my soul can call “home”.’

The rain has stopped and the tropical Sun is smiling wisely through the scattered clouds as if it’s been eavesdropping on our conversation. I take off my flip-flops and I walk down the beach to my bungalow, happy, calm and barefoot.

Now Get a Schengen Visa On An Indian Passport

Applying for your first Schengen Visa can be a daunting experience. There are many documents to put together, several confusing questions to answer and countless clarifications to seek. Getting a Schengen Visa on an Indian passport is a complex process but the sooner you start with it, it is almost set you just have to plan out a trip. Because I believe a trip is the best reason for getting a visa and passport as we stay excited for it and pre-plan everything on the advance basis. Let's go through some common queries that the most first-timers have when applying for the Schengen Visa.

What is a Schengen visa and when do you need it?

A Schengen Visa is a document that allows you to travel within the Schengen area, commonly for a period of up to 90 days. Twenty-six countries make up the Schengen area, and if you plan on travelling to one or more of these countries, you will need this visa. The countries are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

As an Indian, where and how do I apply for the Schengen Visa?

The Schengen countries have outsourced their visa application cells to VFS Global, a company which now handles the entire process, making it simpler and faster. There is also no requirement to go to the embassy anymore. VFS Global has five centres in India – Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Puducherry and Bengaluru.

To start off the process, log on to VFS Global's website, and go to the bottom left of the screen, where you will see this:

After entering the appropriate details (for multi-country trips, select your "main destination". you will be directed to another screen where you will be able to download the visa form, find information on visa fees and make an appointment to submit the visa form along with supporting documents.

What do I need to take care of before my appointment?

Put all the documents you need to produce together – there are quite a few of them. You'll find the entire list on the VFS website; while most are fairly straightforward, others require some clarification. I've talked about them in brief here:

Cover letter: Though this isn't listed as one of the required documents, it is best to submit a cover letter as a comprehensive reference paper for the visa officials. Start by addressing the embassy through which you are applying for the visa. The body of your letter should include the dates of your trip, the names and professions of those accompanying you, the purpose of your travel, and a paragraph on how you plan of bearing the expenses on this journey – mention real figures pertaining to your savings, credit cards and fixed deposits. Also list down the documents you will be submitting along with your visa application.

Hotel bookings: Unfortunately, you will have to book your flight tickets and hotels before you apply for the visa. While this in no way confirms that you will get the visa, officials need to establish that you are indeed going for tourism via your accommodation confirmations.

Travel insurance: For emergency hospital or other medical expenses, you will have to get mandatory travel insurance worth Euro 30,000. It will keep you protected against large bills in case something goes wrong. VFS has a list of approved insurance providers on its website, and it's best to pick from amongst them. Once you buy it, your insurance will be delivered to your email inbox.

Financials: The country you are travelling to wants to know that you have enough money to make it through the trip and go back. For this you will submit a bunch of your financial documents such as bank account statements for the last six months, income tax returns for the last three years and others – a list of which you'll find on the VFS website.

If you are unsure of anything on the visa form, leave it blank and clarify with the official at VFS before submitting it to him.

What is the estimated time for the entire process? How long will it take for the visa to arrive?

The first thing you need to remember is to schedule your appointment with VFS at least a month or a month-and-a-half before your scheduled departure. If you can do it sooner, it will give you more time to make your real bookings at hotels. Once you get your appointment date, it will only take a day if you have all your documents in order. A year or two ago, you would also have an interview after submitting the documents at VFS. These days that only happens in rare cases ,where they have a cause for suspicion that you don't plan on coming back. So once you are done with VFS, you should get your visa within seven days. I got my visa to Italy in three days.

What if my visa is rejected? Will my fee be refunded?

Sadly, under no circumstance will your visa fee be refunded. If your visa is denied for some reason, you have two options: One is to appeal the decision. Since the appeal will be evaluated by someone other than the person who rejected your visa, there is a chance that the decision will be overturned. But the visa appeal process might take a few weeks, or even months. Also, in India this process is only available for Spain, Germany and Norway. So the second and better way to go forward, is to reapply through a different Schengen state embassy. Usually, a previous visa denial will not automatic lead to the refusal of a new application, and the new application will be assessed independently.

Do I have to hand over the documents personally at VFS?

Yes, you, along with whoever you are travelling with have to be personally present while you hand over the papers. After you have successfully submitted the documents, scans of your fingerprint will also be taken (the first time you are applying for a visa).

If I am travelling to more than one Schengen country, which embassy do I apply through?

You will have to apply to the “main destination”, the country where you will be staying in for the most number of days.

Do I apply through the country I am entering the Schengen area?

No, you don't have to if you won't be staying the most number of days there.

Should my first trip be to the country that issued the Schengen Visa?

No. You can enter through any Schengen country after you get your visa.

If I'm travelling for work first and and then taking a short vacation, do I tick business or tourism in my visa form?

Business. Get an invitation letter for the first few days from your foreign business partner, and then show hotel bookings for the rest of the days.

How long is the visa valid for?

You are allowed to travel in the Schengen Area for 90 days within a 180-day period. These 90 days, however, do not have to be consecutive. Say you enter the area in March and stay for 50 days, and then come back in August for 20 days, this totals to 70 days in 180 days.

Can my visa be extended?

A Schengen Visa, which has already expired, cannot be extended. Even otherwise, while on paper you can extend it, an extended visa rarely comes through.

Will my air tickets be refunded if I don't get a visa?

No. To help minimise risk, book a flight ticket that is refundable to the largest amount possible.

What are the common reasons behind a visa being rejected?

There can be a few reasons why an embassy might reject your request for a Schengen Visa.

– The documents and cover letter you have provided prove inadequate in establishing the purpose of your travel and stay

– There is a mismatch between your travel itinerary and the visa period you have applied for

– Your supporting documents do not show accommodation for each night you will spend in a Schengen Area

– You do not have enough funds to support your travel

– Your travel insurance policy is not valid across the Schengen Area

– You were unable to respect Schengen Visa limitations during a previous attempt
