THE PHANTOM KILLER
1946 “Texas Moonlight Murders”
In the Spring of 1946 couples “parking” had a lot to fear. Dubbed the Phantom Killer, an unknown male serial killer targeted couples parked in places known to locals as Lovers Lane. One can assume what was happening when the “parking” took place.
The Phantom killer had a total of 8 victims. This included 5 deaths and 3 survivors. All the survivors reported the same thing. A well dressed man with a burlap sack over his head. They say there were 2 slits cut out for the eyes.
The prime suspect in the case was a career criminal named Youell Swinney. His wife notified police of her suspicions tying her husband to the serial murders. She later declined to testify against him and he was never charged in the deaths of the 5 victims.
Swinney passed away at the age of 77 in 1994.
Throughout the years 9 people have came forward and confessed to the murders. None of the stories matching up with details of the case. Leading police not to pursue any of the confessions. Over 400 people were arrested and questioned. Still not leading to charges being filed.
If anyone is interested there was a movie based upon this event that was released in 1976. “The Town that Dreaded Sundown”
To date the case still remains unsolved.

Body Bags
By R. S. Gwynn
I
Let's hear it for Dwayne Coburn, who was small And mean without a single saving grace Except for stealing—home from second base Or out of teammates' lockers, it was all The same to Dwayne. The Pep Club candy sale, However, proved his downfall. He was held Briefly on various charges, then expelled And given a choice: enlist or go to jail.
He finished basic and came home from Bragg For Christmas on his reassignment leave With one prize in his pack he thought unique, Which went off prematurely New Year's Eve. The student body got the folded flag And flew it in his memory for a week.
II
Good pulling guards were scarce in high school ball. The ones who had the weight were usually slow As lumber trucks. A scaled-down wild man, though, Like Dennis "Wampus" Peterson, could haul His ass around right end for me to slip Behind his blocks. Played college ball a year— Red-shirted when they yanked his scholarship Because he majored, so he claimed, in Beer.
I saw him one last time. He'd added weight Around the neck, used words like "grunt" and "slope," And said he'd swap his Harley and his dope And both balls for a 4-F knee like mine. This happened in the spring of '68. He hanged himself in 1969.
III
Jay Swinney did a great Roy Orbison Impersonation once at Lyn-Rock Park, Lip-synching to "It's Over" in his dark Glasses beside the jukebox. He was one Who'd want no better for an epitaph Than he was good with girls and charmed them by Opening his billfold to a photograph: Big brother. The Marine. Who didn't die.
He comes to mind, years from that summer night, In class for no good reason while I talk About Thoreau's remark that one injustice Makes prisoners of us all. The piece of chalk Splinters and flakes in fragments as I write, To settle in the tray, where all the dust is.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney shocked the college football world when he hired offensive coordinator Garrett Riley away from TCU earlier this month. Since then, Riley has been on the road with Swinney and the offensive coaches recruiting and checking in on the 2023 signees who will enroll in the summer. Riley has yet to make a public speaking appearance, but that will change when the Fort Hill Clemson Club holds its Recruiting Wrap-Up on Feb. 1. It's also a chance for fans to get an early look at the mid-year enrollees. The Club will host the 2023 Recruiting Wrap Up on Wednesday, February 1 at the Poe Indoor Practice Facility, from 5:45 pm until 7:30 pm. Doors will open at 5 pm. All proceeds go toward need-based scholarships for students in Oconee & Pickens Counties, as well as Pendleton High School. This endowment is over $670,000 now, and the Fort Hill Clemson Club hopes to make it a million by 2025. These scholarships are for students from this area who need help. Not athletes, not IPTAY. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and his coaches will be there to introduce with video footage the latest recruiting class, especially the mid-years. Chick-fil-A provides the food for the evening and there is an online auction with unique Clemson experiences, such as lunch for four with Kathleen Swinney and a tour of the Football Complex (those were the two big-ticket items last year). General Admission tickets for the 2023 Recruiting Wrap Up are on sale for $60/ticket. Current members will have the opportunity to save $10 on each ticket. Quick note: Since this event occurs during the NCAA recruiting dead period, no 9th – 12th graders, prep school students, or junior college students may be in attendance. All children over the age of 3 must have their own ticket. The event is a great chance to listen to the position coaches – quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Riley, running backs coach CJ Spiller, tight ends coach Kyle Richardson, offensive line coach Thomas Austin, wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Wes Goodwin, defensive tackles coach Nick Eason, defensive ends coach Lemanski Hall, cornerbacks coach Mike Reed, and safeties coach Mickey Conn – share the inside story of the recruiting class. Listening to Eason is worth the price of admission in itself. There are always interesting nuggets about the players themselves – in the past we’ve heard about Will Shipley and his penchant for wearing old tennis shoes, we’ve heard about Cade Klubnik and his long love affair with Clemson, and numerous other stories. It’s also a chance to get a look at the uniform numbers for those freshmen, which include Peter Woods, Christopher Vizzina, Vic Burley, TJ Parker, Stephiylan Green, Harris Sewell, Jamal Anderson, Zechariah Owens, Ian Reed, Noble Johnson, Kylen Webb, Khalil Barnes, Dee Crayton, and Shelton Lewis. You can purchase your tickets here. More info on the event: How long will the event last? The event is around 2 hours. What are the ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event? Since this event occurs during the NCAA recruiting dead period, no 9th – 12th graders, prep school students, or junior college students may be in attendance. All children over the age of 3 must have their own ticket. Where can I contact the organizer with any questions? Please contact [email protected] with any additional questions about the event. Is my registration/ticket transferrable? Your ticket is transferrable as long as the person is in possession of the email with the ticket or printed ticket from the email. What are my parking options for the event? Parking will be directed by event parking attendants and will be in the designated areas around the Poe Indoor Football Facility. Is the Clear Bag Policy in effect for this event? Yes, it is. This applies to camera bags. What's the refund policy if(typeof ez_ad_units != 'undefined')ez_ad_units.push([[300,250],'tigernet_com-leader-1','ezslot_3',609,'0','0']);__ez_fad_position('div-gpt-ad-tigernet_com-leader-1-0');
Sorry, there are no refunds because proceeds from this event help provide academic scholarships for local students to attend Clemson University. source

One of the city’s oldest public high schools, once heavily Jewish, for decades home to a nearly all-Black student body, it boasts fiercely proud alumni and a reputation for powerhouse athletics.
It’s named for the fourth chief justice of the United States Supreme Court, widely regarded as the most influential leader of the nation’s highest court, honored with his face on postage stamps and his name on law schools in Chicago and elsewhere.
Marshall also was a slaveholder his entire adult life, with at least 200 Black slaves on his Virginia plantations.
That part of Marshall’s history didn’t keep an all-white Chicago Board of Education from naming the school on West Adams Street in East Garfield Park for him when it opened 125 years ago.
“That’s our heritage,” says Anyiah Jackson-Williams, Marshall’s valedictorian from the class of 2020. “I’m African American. It really was a shocker to me. He’s one of the people that was a slave owner.”
Across the city, at least 30 public schools are named for people who owned or traded enslaved Black or indigenous people, according to a Chicago Sun-Times review of every public school name in Chicago.
Some, like Marshall, were Southern plantation owners, among them Presidents George Washington and James Madison.
Others, perhaps surprisingly to some, were Northerners — like John Hancock, John J. Audubon, Patrick Henry and Alexander Hamilton.
They span the city. One South Side elementary school in Washington Heights that’s named for Washington’s plantation — where hundreds toiled in bondage — today has a student population that’s 98.7% Black.
Chicago Public Schools officials say they weren’t aware of how many schools remain named for slaveholders until shown the Sun-Times’ findings.
They also say they didn’t realize before being asked about those findings regarding the nation’s third-largest public school system, in which nine of 10 children identify as Black, Brown or indigenous, that schools named for white people outnumber those named for African Americans by a ratio of four-to-one, Latinos by nine-to-one and indigenous people by more than 120-to-1.
One public school — a government-funded but privately run charter school — is named for an Asian American woman and her Italian American husband. The couple donated money for its new building.
Now, amid the nationwide racial reckoning sparked by the violent death of George Floyd, an African American man whose death in late May was caught on camera as a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes, Chicago school officials say they are reviewing school names and that changes will be made.
“It’s dehumanizing, and it’s something that we have to work on and change,” says Maurice Swinney, the top CPS official for racial equity. “And we got to disrupt it, we got to stop it, we got to change it. And, for me, it’s important that all of this work be through a process that really starts to teach what this history really means, that starts to reckon with racist ideas and that helps people to really have conversations with race that are not generally happening outside of friend circles.”
Swinney says he’ll lead an effort to change the names first at those schools named for anyone involved in slavery, with people of color at the center of the discussions.
He says CPS might then look at schools named for 35 others known to have publicly said or done racist or misogynistic things.
“I stand around changing the names and making sure that people of color are prioritized in the process of changing the name, so the name change isn’t cosmetic and people still feel harmed by the process that should have been empowering,” Swinney says.
One publicly funded charter school also might be renamed. The privately managed charter school network Acero Schools has a school named for a Spanish priest who was known as an advocate for the rights of slaves — but only after owning slaves himself. Acero says it will ask community members if they want to change it.

Week Five - No Offense, but Where’s the Offense?
Tumblr media
Does anyone out there want to play offense?
It certainly doesn’t seem like it for several of our teams of interest.  Clemson and South Carolina’s struggles on offense start with poor line play, combined with anemic running games, lack of go-to receivers and inconsistent QB performance (other than that, they are in great shape!!).  Meanwhile, Michigan’s offense took the second half off against Rutgers and almost let the game slip away.
While we are on that subject, I must vent.
For all the talk of Jim Harbaugh “reinventing” himself this year, he seems to be resorting to painfully familiar coaching decisions.  Specifically, his tendency to “park the bus” once his team gets a lead over a Big Ten opponent.  This past Saturday was a classic example.  Sitting on a 14 point lead and finding his team on the Rutgers 4 yard line with 30 seconds left in the first half, Harbaugh didn’t go for the jugular.  Instead, he settled for a field goal.  That four-point swing gave the Scarlet Knights enough of a mental boost to come out in the second half and nearly win the game.
Granted, I’ve learned to accept the fact that Maize and Blue nation suffers from chronic programmatic hubris.  But when the “We are superior because of our winged helmets!” mentality starts infecting the sideline,  then I’ve got a real problem.  Do you think Steve Spurrier, Dabo Swinney or Nick Saban would have settled for 3 in that situation?  Of course not!  They would have gone for the knockout punch.  Harbaugh didn’t, took the safe route, and I think he lost his team – at least for the rest of that afternoon.  We’ll see if it lingers.
I’m done.  Time for Week Five picks.
Wisconsin over Michigan – I guess I’m not done. The Wolverines have back-to-back road games and I will not be shocked if they lose them both.  The road trip starts this week at rowdy Camp Randall Stadium in Madison.  Michigan never plays well here and the Badgers will be looking to rebound after an ugly loss to a rapidly improving Notre Dame.  Michigan’s run game vanished in the second half last week – it will likely be MIA for the whole game against Wisconsin’s defense.
Illinois over Charlotte – The 49ers found some more of that nice house money last week against Middle Tennessee.  However, their good fortune will run out this week in Champaign.  As much as I like what Will Healy is doing in Charlotte, I can’t get past the fact that this is a CONFUSA vs Big Ten match-up.  Even though the Illini are a bad Big Ten team, I like them to win this one very easily.
Appalachian State over Georgia State – I really thought Shawn Elliott had a signature win last week at Auburn.  But alas, the SEC officiating crew wasn’t having any of that and – making up for the calls from the Penn State game – gave the Tigers a gift call leading to a heart-breaking loss for the Panthers.  I sense they will still be stewing over that come Saturday, which should provide enough of a window for the visiting Mountaineers to squeeze out a win.  This will be a close, entertaining “Fun Belt” game.
South Carolina over Troy – Just what the Gamecocks need – a winnable game that should allow them to address some of their offensive woes.  The Georgia loss was understandable.  Failing to answer the door when opportunity knocked (multiple times) against Kentucky, not so much. They need to find an offensive rhythm if they want to get back on track.  They should be able to against the Trojans from the “Fun Belt.”  Should be able to.
Clemson over Boston College – Look out, Clemson!  The Eagles are pretty good. In fact, if this game was being played in Chestnut Hill, I would be going with BC.  But it’s in Death Valley and at night.  And I have to think Dabo Swinney and Tony Elliott are going to find a way to get the offense untracked.  They’d better, or more losses are going to come this season.

Spielberg in 30 Shots from Jacob T. Swinney on Vimeo.
Before I knew what a director was, I knew who Steven Spielberg was. I believe that this is partially due to the fact that Spielberg has crafted some of the most iconic shots in all of cinema. Many filmmakers have that one signature shot that will forever solidify them in film history-- Spielberg has dozens. This video showcases the work of Steven Spielberg in 30 memorable shots, one from each of his full-length films. From something as magical as a silhouetted bicycle streaking across the moon, to something as simple as tiny ripples in a cup of water, this is Steven Spielberg.
