Lake of the Ozarks pool party draws packed crowd

Video posted by a reporter shows partiers crowded together in a pool at the Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, this Memorial Day weekend.
Scott Pasmore, an anchor for CNN affiliate KTVK, shot the video at Backwater Jacks Bar & Grill in Osage Beach on Saturday.
The gathering violates social distancing measures intended to limit the spread of Covid-19. As part of Missouri’s reopening plan announced earlier this month, state officials said restaurants may offer dining-in services but must adhere to social distancing and other precautionary public health measures.
Jodi Akins, from Blue Springs, told CNN in a message that she visited the bar with four friends for a pool party on Saturday.
“When we walked up my first words were ‘oh my gosh’ it was intense for sure!! Social distancing was nonexistent. However everyone was enjoying themselves. It was a very carefree environment but security was heavy!!” she wrote to CNN.
She said the bar took some safety precautions.
“They checked all of our temps and had thousands of little bottles of hand sanitizer!! They did a good job with what they had to work with!!” she wrote.
The bar posted on Facebook that this was its launch of a summer party called “Zero Ducks Given Pool Party.” It advertised several DJs and bands performing throughout the event.
“The venue has worked with and taken the advice of government officials and management teams and will be following social distancing guidelines. Extra precautions and safety measures will be taken to provide a safe environment for you to enjoy the event,” the bar said.
The bar said it would be operating at reduced capacity, attendants would be continually cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms and that there would be a paramedic on staff for the duration of the event.
Coronavirus is not likely to spread in water, the CDC says, but it does spread through people in close proximity. Staying at least 6 feet from others is particularly important at pools or beaches because masks are impractical in water.
For example, several people who attended a high school swim party in neighboring Arkansas contracted Covid-19, Gov. Asa Hutchinson said Saturday.
Large turnout was expected
The Lake of the Ozarks expected a large turnout this weekend after getting a late start to the season because of the pandemic, according to CNN affiliate KTVI.
“It’s supposed to be one of the biggest Memorial Day weekends we’ve seen at the lake here in years,” Bill Morgan, manager of Robins Resort in Lake of the Ozarks, told KTVI earlier this week.
Adam Kirk lives in Osage Beach, Missouri, and shot a time-lapse drone video that shows the amount of boat traffic on the Lake of the Ozarks on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
“It definitely seems like more (traffic) than last year,” he said. “It seems like everyone is having the same idea, to come to the lake to enjoy summer, because you can social distance at the same time.”
About 11,800 people in Missouri have tested positive for coronavirus and about 680 have died from Covid-19 infection, according to state data.
Ed Yong, a writer at The Atlantic, cautioned that overcrowded pools may not represent the broader American public’s attitude toward social distancing.
“It’s much more compelling to show someone flocking out into a public space than to show, for example, me sitting at home and following guidelines,” he said. “Yet the latter is probably more reflective of what most Americans are actually doing.”
More than two-thirds of Americans are concerned about their respective states being reopened too quickly, according to a recent Pew Research Center poll.

Monday-Tuesday meetings
Rice County Commissioners this morning will be discussing mainteance of the GIS system used in the county's 911 system, and hear various deprtmental updates. They wlll also meet with a representative of the South Central Kansas Economic Development District, and with Emergency Management and EMS Director Greg Klein in executive session.
McPherson City Commissioners this morning are holding a public hearing on creation of a Community Improvement District for the area along North Champlin where a new motel is being constructed... this will fund an extention of the street and water and storm drainage improvements. Also on today's agenda are a number of matters for the police and fire departments, another purchase for the Community Building, a request for a no Parking zone in the 100 block of North Oak, and updates on various public works projects.
Revisions to the city of Hutchinson's Community Event policies, the contract for a project at the Wastewater Treatment Plant, and on this year's arterial overlay project will be considered by the City Council Tuesday. Also up for consideration is a resolution of intent for issuance of health care facility refunding bonds on behalf of Wesley Towers which is seeking to re-finance a 2014 bond issue to gain lower interest rates and a request to vacate a platted but never opened segment of 50th Avenue in the Foothills Subdivision.. a public hearing will be part of this item... approval of the FAA contract tower agreement for Hutchinson Regional Airport, and appointments to three advisory boards.
Along with the resignation of Councilman Jerry Minix, the Lyons City Council will be hearing about two staff resignations at tonight's meeting. On the agenda tonight are several grant related matters, a request to add a stop sign north of the intersection of College and West Main, matters regarding repairs to a water well, and designation of a voting delegate to the Kansas League of Municipalities Annual Conference next month. The Council will also discuss the possibility of refinancing outstanding bonds, hear a report on operation of the Swimming Pool for 2019, and hear various updates.
Adoption of the 2019 Uniform Public Offense Code and Standard Traffic Ordinance will be considered by the South Hutchinson City Council at their meeting tonight. Aside from routine matters, the only other items on their agenda is introduction of two new city employees.
The Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309 Board of Education tonight will take action to ratify a 2019-20 contract agreement with their teachers. This also includes approval of a revised salary schedule and supplmental duty pay. The Board will also consider declaration of surplus items for disposal via online auction, a food service snack procurement plan, acceptance of a gift and a number of personnel items including a change to a supplmental coaching assignment. An executive session is also planed on possible property acquisition.
Aside from approval of August minutes and paying the bills, Reno County Commissioners have just one action item on their agenda Tuesday... action on a Planning Commission recommendaton to deny a request for a condtional use permit for a construction company office and storage facility on Plum north of 43rd Avenue just outside the city limits. Commissioners will also hear a quarterly report from Horizons Mental Health Center.

As we glide through the second quarter of 2019, the multifamily investment and development market is still hot-- but there are a variety of trends that investors, developers, brokers, and other industry players should be aware of. In particular, U.S. rent prices are steadily increasing, though not as quickly as they have in the last two years, both baby boomers and millennials are moving into apartment developments, especially in urban areas. In addition, tenants, particularly younger ones, are craving new amenities and features, such as smart home technology, wellness amenities, and environmental sustainability.
National Rent Prices Continue to Increase
As of April 2019, national rent prices sat at $1,436, an approximate 3% increase from April 2018. Overall, Las Vegas saw the fastest rental growth in the U.S., with a nearly 9% increase from January 2018 to January 2019. Other markets with fast growing rents included Nashville, Phoenix, and Charleston, which all had 2018-2019 rental increases of between 7-8%.
