The thing I honestly most had to ignore from the Magic Book of Spells for the AU I’d been working on when it came out is the whole reveal that apparently Eclipsa is an illegitimate child because her parents were never married. Because in my AU, let’s just say that the Royal Butterflies having babies out of wedlock is like, the biggest “no-no” in all of Mewni history, to the point where it’s basically the number one law in the whole kingdom’s history. 

So, basically, what I kind of decided to do is have it so that Eclipsa is still technically an illegitimate child, but nobody actually knows besides Solaria. Solaria married some guy to just be a cover and make it so everyone would assume her child was born legitimate. But she did still conceive Eclipsa with Alphonse the Worthy and just explains any traits that Eclipsa clearly didn’t get from either Solaria or her supposed father with either the Mewman throwback genetics or simply mild magical mutations.

Plus, she’s the Queen and literally has a flaming sword on her at basically all times. Is anyone really going to accuse her of breaking the Kingdom’s most sacred law, especially when they technically don’t have any actual proof that she did anything wrong? Unless they want to be punished for accusing the Queen, of all people, of treason...probably not.

I can't believe there is a "Cursed Cat Alastor Controversy" and that once again I had to have the evil lepreconartist who lords over the fandom making his gold off of Medrano's despair explain to me in order to understand what the fuck is going in on the fandom, yet again ... But I kind of hate you all so here's my hot take...

It's actual petty bullshit.

It's the equivalent of a fanartist calling out an AMV maker for "art theft" and demanding that a video they worked hard on be taken down because they used a piece of fanart for a character in an AMV tribute to the character that both the fanartist and the AMV maker (who is already an artist in their own right) already do not actually fucking own. Like, regardless if the AMV maker gives the fanartist credit. Instead of being honored by it, when they should know better that neither of them ever actually even own the shit to begin with, yet they still demand "credit" for fanwork.

I once saw a popular Asian artist in the svtfoe fandom demanding a boycott of the popular fan run merch store TheMysteryShack just as the beautiful fan made artbook Tales of Rebel Princess was about to launch exclusively through there because she alleged that the shop owner had stolen one of her friends fanart designs on a goddamn fucking Steven Universe tarot card pack of all things but I still really liked her Star fanart, so when I tried to respectfully explain to her that I wouldn't be boycotting the shop because of Tales of Rebel Princes launching and how I thought it was personally in very poor taste to not just contact the shop owner privately about the matter and instead making a big stink in public about boycotting his shop when she knew that one of her other artist friends that we knew she had also collaborated with in the past was just about to debut another big collaborative art tribute book dedicated to Daron and Star vs. there through this guys shop! And essentially it would be sad to see her knowingly taking business away from her other friend like that and demanding others in her following do the same and over something as small as a deck of Steven Universe cards, especially in understanding how little love svtfoe gets, since she was also a well known svtfoe fanartist ... All I got in response was "Well I'm happy for my friend but I'm Korean and you're just a Filthy American who couldn't possibly understand how disrespectful something like this is in my culture and blah blah blah if you instant on further harassing me about this I'll block you!"

And I was basically like "suit yourself being fake and having a stick up your butt honey I'm still getting my Star vs. artbook!"

And then she blocked me.

Good riddance. As if Miss Heinous would honestly ever head bang to Ruberiot...

But I guess what I'm trying to get here is that like...Oh, I'm sorry? You wanna make fanart for western cartoons? You gotta play by western rules then. Like it's late night here and I'm sorry if that sounds harsh. But it's true.

If Aurelio Voltaire honestly deserves to have a deal be cut in my opinion so he can finally officially own his share of the "Vampair" series after Daria Cohen stole his voice to make it (half dry humor, half serious here, to be quite frank about this) then coma0423 deserves to cut a deal so that Amir Talai can have a bit of financial comprehension and his percentage of whatever kind of (I'm guessing financial) ~"credit'~ that Coma is now demanding from other fanartists who make Cursed Cat Alastor fan merch since Talai , after all, did design the original concept sketch that would become Cursed Cat Alastor that Coma saw and then decided to just runaway with when they made the meme ...

Listen to me... Fanart belongs to everyone and no one by nature of it being made by fans and no one can truly own a "fan concept" expect for the true creator of the thing that it's based on. Unless that thing is already in the public domain. And if it is it becomes Schrodinger's Cheshire Cat.

Schrodinger's Cursed Cat Alastor belongs to everyone and no one, babe. He belongs to The Hazbin Hotel Fandom and The Hazbin Hotel. If he actually becomes canon in the show somehow, then he'll belong to Amir and Viv, actually, maybe Coma will get proper credit then, but the concept won't even really be theirs anymore, just as it even isn't really officially theirs now, even if they officially do get hired.

First you're telling me that I'm not allowed to fuck the radio demon ... Now you're telling me that I'm apparently not even allowed to kiss a cute wittle kitty cat plushie of him between the space on his head between his ears if said plush wasn't crafted by or sold explicitly by the fanartist who again, stole the concept sketch of him from Amir Talai in the first place?

No. This is nonsense.

Stop making all these petty dramas off someone else's work that only feed the evil leprechaun more gold off of someone else's work or start making you're own original work from your own original concept that you can actually claim your own copyright to I'm exhausted.

Ever hear the phrase once something leaves your brain it belongs to everyone, not just you anymore?

This goes triple for anyone making fanart of someone else's work and that's a fact. Especially if it's only ever an extremely memed up version of an already canonically existing character that you were only so lucky went viral.

Stop the bullying. No one fanwork is that special. Just do your best to honor the source material and be flattered by other fanartists imitations of your fanartist imitation... It's the circle of cursed kitties and it feeds us all. *smacks paw down*

Star vs. The Forces of Evil Fanfic Week Pt. 1

Hello everyone, and welcome to my week of Star vs The Forces of Evil Fanfiction. After getting inspired by the SvTFOE event on Tumblr, I decided to do a week of talking the best fan works from the Star vs fan base. I know I’m a few days late, but I still want to do this. How do you draw your comics? You draw them on paper and then you make 'em digital or do you use another method? I want to start making comics, but I'm not really good at drawing, but I'm really good at graphic. I know it sounds weird, but this is my reality. So, got any advice for me?

I’ll let you in on a little secret: I can’t draw either. Just like you, I was good at graphics but not so much with a pencil, and I wanted to tell stories. Here’s a simplified explanation of how I make comics: 

First, I edit together screenshots of the characters. Then, I trace over it, then color. 

This method can be used for pretty much any flash-based cartoon, so I could see it easily working for something like SVTFOE or MLP. Even if it may not seem like it, even tracing is a skill. My early ones didn’t look so good! 

Still cute, but the line quality could be a lot better. With time and practice, you come to learn how to utilize line thickness and how to choose your colors well.

Obviously, you should avoid tracing other peoples’ fanwork and stick to canon screenshots. I also think it’s possible to use this method to create Original works, if you were to commission an artist to draw you some designs that follow this general style (strict style rules, black lines, easy to pose puppets, basically what you would see in any Flash-based animation) you could then utilize those. I’m considering doing that right now so that I might start a graphic novel in the future. 

Also, if you practice tracing a lot, especially by hand, you will eventually start learning how to draw without even realizing it. Muscle memory is cool that way. 

I’m not sure that I... recommend this? I mean, tracing in general is looked down upon. But you asked how I make my comics, and this is how. This process has allowed me, someone with Zero drawing ability, to create a whole entire comic that looks pretty good! So, life hacks, right? 

And it still takes quite a lot of work to do. For me, the part where I piece together the original image to trace over always takes a very long time.

yeah, exactly. i think svtfoe might have some more difficulty due to the nature of its ending , but give it a few years & i don't doubt a renaissance period where there's all sorts of content everywhere will come around. it has a lot of strong elements & unique takes, plus supplementary material that ppl can use as a basis for fanworks not strictly related to star's story. as long as a fandom is passionate, canon is a useful sandbox for creativity.

it’s not like star vs is void of content, it’s not a bland cartoon, that’s for sure, it will be remembered and probably get a chance to rise again.

It might take some time for people to get back in the mood, i think people were fairly unhappy with what happened and might need a break from it before returning.

There’s just plenty to use here honestly, fandom might as well pick up the pieces and write the stories they want to see with this world. I am excited to see what people come up with tbh.

Joke Headcanon: Literally all Starco fanworks (or at least the more “vanilla” ones, including the porn) are canon in SVTFOE and made in secret by Starfan13. When Star and Marco get together, she shows them her collection. They’re incredibly weirded out by a lot of it, and just outright try to forget they ever saw a lot of the weirder shit (let’s be honest here BF wouldn’t even come close to a medal for weird shit, all things considered), but actually end up using a lot of it for date ideas and such.

I won’t be able to watch the new **Star Wars until around Christmas Day/late December.

I’m very eager to watch and ask for no spoilers please.

My attempt to avoid spoilers *may end up limiting my online activity.

*I say ‘may’ because I’m not entirely sure yet. I do have workaround strategies in place to avoid spoilers while being online (like literally looking at only the tags that I’m fairly certain will have no Star Wars spoilers); also I’m still more interested in being online right now for svtfoe crit/AUs/fanart/fanfic. I consider Star Wars part of my long list of fandoms, but it’s not one I heavily engage with at the moment in terms of making fanworks for it. But again, no spoilers for the new Star Wars please.

(Also, while this is probably less of a risk, no spoilers for The Shape of Water please too.)

**I’ve been thinking more and more of how much Star Wars has been a part of my childhood and life--this is literally something my father introduced me to since I was very little, he shared the OT with me, and really our whole family shares in Star Wars--so watching the new movies unspoiled is pretty important to me.

I bet they're going to end SVTFOE in a similar manner to Avatar Korra. They'll heavily imply a relationship on screen without outright confirming anything, and still leave room for other shippers to avoid alienating a large chunk of viewers (and therefore merchandise purchasers) to hope for more or continue freely publicizing the show with their fanworks.

Anyone else have those things in some shows/movies/books/etc that while in the actual canon, you accept them as being, well...canon, but when it comes to fanworks and your own work, you just flat out go “I reject your reality, and substitute my own”?

Yeah, that’s me with not only...well, basically a lot of the conflict-based stuff in the finale of SVTFOE, but also with the whole reveal of Star and Moon not actually being related to Eclipsa.

I’m gonna try something

LadyNoir July. SVTFOE was my first fanwork love, and I’m not forgetting that. But that show is now far beyond my capacity to do it justice unless a wave of inspiration hits me for my relatively uninspired and unfinished stories. ML, however, is perfectly in my reach, so if I want to get back into writing in a serious way, I figure I’d start here. I’ve been lurking in the fandom for long enough anyway, reading fanfic and consuming art by the damn truckloads. So I might as well start contributing, bad as it may be for the first little bit, given I haven’t written them before. Yes, I missed day 1, sue me. If, when I wake up, I still feel motivated to do this, expect day 1 and 2 tomorrow. Who knows, this might be fun.
