Dog Shoes

So, I saw YET ANOTHER video of a dog wearing shoes for the first time and doing that high kick walk. This IS funny to watch, but if this is happening, it means you did it wrong.

Dog pads are very sensitive, so basically, picture someone just sticking oven mitts over your hands for seemingly no reason and telling you to go about your day while wearing those. No, you can't modify them in any way or pull them off at any time. What do you mean you can't scratch your nose? Well that's just too bad, isn't it. It's similar to dog boots.

It may take longer initially, but it will be much easier in the long run if you acclimate them to the shoes first and make it a positive experience.

In order to do this, have some high value treats ready. Hold up one shoe. Let the dog take their time sniffing it if they care to. Don't let them chew it, it's not a toy, but if they're curious, that nose should be allowed to go where it pleases.

Once the sniff part is done, give treat.

Put the boot on your dogs foot. Treat. Remove boot. Treat. Repeat this one more. If your dog tries to remove the boot, distract them with yet another treat. Do this until your pup is comfortable with you putting the boots on all four paws.

Once you get the shoes on, lead them around the house with treats, keep their attention on the food instead of their own feet. You'll be amazed at how quickly they get used to the footwear.

Once they stop high stepping in the house, take them outside and do more luring with treats until they seem more comfortable. Let them explore the yard a little. Feeling ambitious? Take them for a nice, relaxing walk.

Come back inside, remove the boots, treat.

Congratulations. You've just trained your pup to accept boots. And it will be much less of a struggle in the future! When I need to put Sutter Cain's boots on, it takes maybe 2 whole minutes if I'm not in any rush. He never struggles, fusses, never dodges, runs away, hides, or tries to pull them back off. He just stands there patiently while I lift his foot, slip on the shoe, then do the velcro.

He doesn't high step, doesn't shake his feet, doesn't mind them at all.

Compare that to the people who tell me all the time how their dog fights them every step of the way until they finally gave up.

It may take longer AT FIRST, but if you do it right, your life gets easier in the long term.

Something I never anticipated before having a SDiT is how god damn many people have a story about dogs that they think is INFINITELY interesting and I need to hear it RIGHT NOW while I’m in the middle of going about my day.

I mean, I just came in to grab some stuff for dinner tonight, but please! Tell me ALL about YOUR childhood dog, or that person you know who also has a service dog, or how much you’ve always loved shepherds, OR spend 20 minutes of my time telling me how you totally respect service dogs and you’re not going to touch him, talk to him, or distract him in any way and you’re such an advocate for working animals and disabled rights because I ABSOLUTELY GIVE A SHIT!!!

I was expecting and ready for the “What a pretty dog” and “That dog’s got shoes” comments. I’m one of those idiots myself. But I didn’t know I was signing up to film a documentary about the general public’s feelings about dogs in general.

psa: please please PLEASE don’t bother people with a service animal, no matter how cute it is/how much you want to pet it/how recently your dog died (though that is really really sad and I’m sorry). they are working SO hard and the distractions are SO much, it’s a huge ask for them to focus on their handlers when it is hot and overstimulating and crowded and you cooing at the animal/touching it/talking within earshot about whether you believe it’s a “real” service animal is more distracting than you know. I want everyone who loves dogs to be happy but I have autism and more than that I want my dog to be able to do his job so I can go about my day too.

Sutter Cain’s birthday was the 2nd. Among several toys and treats, he recieved a large snuffle mat in the shape of a rose.

Best present to date. He LOVES that thing. Every day I sneak treats or kibble in it and he has a blast finding it. He loves it so much he even lays on it like a dog bed.

Sutter Cain is Special

So, because I love bragging about my beautiful baby boy, I am going to do so again!!

After a VERY busy day, Sutter Cain, Debbie and I went out to lunch at a semi-local hot spot. While we were there Sutter Cain was allowed to be "on Call" which means technically he's off duty for his service work, but if I need him to task, he will.

She said she's seen us around town before and she's a service dog trainer and she was impressed with how good my boy behaves when he's on duty.

Unfortunately, she ALSO had a dog with her that Sutter Cain very badly wanted to go sniff and I was having trouble getting his focus off of said other dog. He wasn't acting crazy, but he wasn't listening very well and would not stop staring.

The trainer suggested an ecollar, as if I didn't know about them, and I politely accepted the suggestion, but I don't want to use one. I am VERY well aware of them, how to use them and how they function, I'm not some brand new dog owner. But since she didn't know me or what I do or do not know, I didn't feel like discussing the issue.

Anyway, once she and her dog finally went away, I did some Focus work with Sutter Cain and he did beautiful. Stared me right in the eye until I released him. I even had Debbie do stuff to distract him and he gave her a glance, but then ignored her and I was so proud.

I know exactly what I need TO get him over his reactivity (NOT aggression, he's never actually aggressive, he just has an intense need to go greet other dogs and that's my mistake, I socialized him wrong as a puppy) I just don't have the resources to do it.

Anyway, he was SO good today, and other than that brief moment of misbehavior, he did GREAT today, and the fact that his good behavior was noticed made me even MORE proud of my baby boy.

Honestly, he is as close to perfection as you could ever expect out of a dog. Who could possibly ask for more?

Another Train Ride

What an adventure yesterday was!

Sutter Cain and I rode the train again, which is ALWAYS fun, got to meet more of Debbie’s family, and had dinner in a lovely deli. I’ve never eaten in an actual deli-restaurant before, but I’ve heard/read about them, so I was really expecting more than it was.

It was basically a fancy Dunkin Donuts. You went to the counter, ordered from the menu, then sat down and ate. Except there was a salad bar, an ice cream machine, and a soda fountain bar, so more like an old time Wendy’s?

The food was admittedly excellent. Except for the ice cream. But the staff were pleasant and the building was fancy. So overall, it was a nice experience.

The only really negative thing we had to deal with was when I was getting back on the train to go home. Two employees came RUSHING at me while I was going up the stairs and were telling me that dogs are not allowed on the train.

Sutter Cain was pretty clearly marked and he’s been back and forth on the train several times by now, PLUS I don’t like being rushed at, so my hackles went up instantly. I was ready for a fight, but after they asked me the two questions they just let me be, so that wasn’t even that bad.

The ride to and from our destination was both fun and relaxing.

I got home exhausted and sore but in a pleasant mood. And Sutter Cain slept even harder than I did.

Games Puppies Play

Something I enjoy doing with Sutter Cain is playing Hide And Seek. When he runs out of sight, like at the dog park or in dad’s yard, sometimes even at home, I will go hide somewhere.

Sutter Cain feels confident when he knows where I am, so when he takes off without me and suddenly I’m not where he last saw me, he gets worried until he finds me again.

He’s actually gotten REALLY good at finding me, at which point he gently herds me back to the last place he left me, and then either lays on my feet, or wanders off to play, but stays where he can keep a close eye on me for a while.

It’s seriously adorable. I love my baby so much.

Free Balling

So, just a cute little Sutter Cain story.

I was commissioned to make a hat. I'm going to be paid $30 for it.

While I was in the process of making said hat, my phone rang and when I leaned forward to grab it, one of the balls of yarn I'm working with fell out of my lap and bounced to the floor.

I figured, what the hell. It can just wait until I'm done with the phone call, and lean back again to talk to dad.

About a minute later, Sutter Cain walks into the room and picks up my yarn ball, then hands it to me completely unprompted.

Words can never express how much I love my perfect perfect baby boy.

Wagging His Tattle Tail

Ok, so, Sutter Cain has this habit of "tattle tale"ing when my neighbor's dogs get out. He used to do it with Bug and still does it when Tucker or Bella Luna get out.

He will come RUNNING over to me and give me an intense stare, ears up, mouth closed. If I try to ignore him, he pokes me with his nose until I look at him. Then, if the door is closed, he dashes to it and stands there looking at me. If I still don't respond, he comes back and repeats the process.

If the door is open, he dashes out for a few seconds then comes back in and stares at me again. This repeats until I agree to go outside and see what's going on.

When one of the dogs is loose, he usually helps me round them back up again and get them into their yard. Being a shepherd, he's good at this.

Well, this morning it's nice and cool out, so I have the front door open. Because yesterday was a holiday, today is now trash day.

Well, Sutter Cain did his little tattle tale maneuver just a few minutes ago. I figure Bella Luna is out again. She's been getting out a lot lately. So I get up and go to the door preparing to grab a leash, when I see that it's not Bella Luna at all.

It's Debbie! Putting out her recycling bin. HE WAS TELLING ME THAT DEBBIE WAS OUT OF HER YARD!!!

Dear god I love this dog.
