Climate Innovation Prize for Braunschweig battery manufacturers

The Braunschweig[1]-based battery manufacturer LB Systems[2] receives the Climate Innovation Prize 2022 from the state of Lower Saxony[3]. This recognises the company's sustainable energy storage solutions, according to a statement from the Lower Saxony Climate Protection and Energy Agency. The EUR 10,000 prize was awarded on Thursday 10-11 evening by the Lower Saxony Environment Ministry in the Deutsches Theater in Göttingen.

The Braunschweig company prevailed over 54 competitors. LB Systems has developed a process that tests the functionality of used battery systems cheaply and in a matter of seconds, so that they can then be used again. Recycling would make electric cars more sustainable because fewer new batteries would have to be produced.

Lower Saxony companies have been plagued by numerous crises in recent years. "Nevertheless, this year we are seeing again that many companies with their great ideas contribute heavily to making our country more climate-friendly and crisis-proof," said the new Lower Saxony Environment Minister Christian Meyer.

Since 2020, the Climate Innovation Prize has been awarded annually to Lower Saxony companies that "show through creativity that climate protection offers an opportunity for a sustainable and future-oriented economy," the organizers said.

At the same time, the Innovation Prize of the district of Göttingen was awarded[4] to companies from the region. 122 inventions and ideas from companies and science were submitted for the prizes worth 3,000 euros.[5]

Grünfuchs Logistikgesellschaft[6] won in the "Founders and Young Entrepreneurs" category with a system for logistics in cities supported by artificial intelligence. Among the small companies with up to 20 employees, Aqua Computer[7] won with a protection system that is intended to prevent damage to computers from leaking cooling liquids. The Harz-Highland[8] company Flügel[9] won with a monitoring system for bark beetle populations in companies with over 20 employees. The Third Institute of Physics at the University of Göttingen, Aleksandra Yemelyanovich from Hildesheim and the company Ludwig Nano Precision[10] from Northeim won special prizes.
