Work Experience: Dormansland Parish Council

I was commissioned by Dormansland Parish Council to take a series of landscape photographs of the local scenery, which is a part of the green belt. It was proposed by central government to build on the green belt around existing villages and towns.

The local parish council was putting evidence together, to show that the area wasn’t suitable to build on, because of its natural beauty. This evidence was to be sent to Surrey county council to then be presented to the central government.

One day I got a phone call from someone who works on the council in Dormansland, as my grandmother recommended me to them as a young photographer looking for work experience. 

They explained that they needed a photographer to take pictures to help build a case for why central government shouldn’t build new housing around their town, they also said that they’d pay me for the work I produce as well.

The work was for the following week, so I had plenty of time to hire out a lens suitable for the sort of work I’d be doing, so I went into the university and hired a 17 - 40mm F4/L USM wide angle lens, which is perfect for full frame landscape photographs.

I got a train from Portsmouth and Southsea to Lingfield train station, in total the trip cost me £21.10. I was met by my grandmother, who lives not far away from Dormansland, so she let me stay with her whilst I was working on these photographs for the local council. 

In total it took me roughly two days to get all these photographs taken due to the distance between each of the locations I was asked to photograph. It took me a couple of hours to edit each of the photographs on my laptop and I sent them off to the correct people. 

At the end of the two days work I was paid £150 for the work that I had produced for them, and they said that they were pleased with the work that I had done for them. 

I feel that these photographs aren’t the best I’ve taken, but it has been a good experience taking photographs for a local council, doing this work made me feel as if I could change this country or even a small part of it with the photographs I take.
