Aloys Zötl (Austrian, 1803-1887) Two Surinam or Amazonian Horned Frogs (Ceratophrys cornuta), 1884 watercolor, double pen & black ink framing lines 16 1⁄8 x 20 in. (40.9 x 50.8 cm) via Christie's
"The bestiary of the untypical Austrian artist, Aloïs Zötl, is highly varied. The sale of one hundred and fifty watercolours from the artist’s studio included some six drawings of animals from the amphibian family (Hôtel Drouot sale, Paris, 19 December 1955, lots 39-44), which did not however include this piece. Even when painting animals of which he had direct visual experience, the artist drew his inspiration from existing iconography, for example, engraved illustrations from natural history treatises (G. Mariotti, Le bestiaire d’Aoys Zötl (1831-1887), Milan, 1979, p.15). A similar watercolour of two frogs in an aquatic landscape is held in a private collection (V. Francès, Contrées de Aloys Zötl, Paris, 2011, pp. 72-73, ill). These two Amazonian or Surinamese frogs (with the female in the foreground and the male in the background), are approximately fifteen to twenty centimeters long, carnivorous, and eat prey including lizards, small frogs, and other mammals."

Zefanio x L.A.X - Rowanda
Dutch-Surinamese rapper Zefanio has teamed up with Nigerian singer/songwriter and recording artist L.A.X for new single ‘Rowanda’ – out now via 220 Records.
Inspired by the new wave of Afro and Amapiano, the single was originally recorded by Zefanio in his kitchen during the pandemic, who wanted to create an amapiano-inspired R&B sound, unlike anything around in The Netherlands. The track was picked up by 220 Records where it was pitched to L.A.X who instantly loved the track and jumped on it, and ‘Rowanda’ was born. Fusing Amapiano with R&B with a commercial twist, the result is a slick production that will showcase Zefanio’s transformative new sound.
With his recent ’No Bad Vibes' album release L.A.X. has already showed mad love to the Dutch music scene, with the album featuring a host of Dutch artists and producers like Ronnie Flex, Quessswho (220 Records) and Shyne (Cruise Control Studios). This latest collaboration with Zefanio further proves his interest in expanding his music beyond the African diaspora into different territories.
2023 has already been a transformative year for Zefanio. After a period of re-shaping and shifting his music into a more mature and carefully curated sound, Zefanio is finally ready to bring his new music to the people. Positioning himself as an R&B singer, Zefanio has sought inspiration from legends of the genre Usher, Chris Brown and Giveon, preparing a wealth of new music to be released throughout the year. Expect R&B with hints of afro and club sounds, together with some very interesting collabs set to roll out in the near future.Zefanio x L.A.X

Review: néomí - somebody's daughter
Néomí, a Surinamese-Dutch folk-pop artist, is an example of an artist who creates compassionate music with “somebody’s daughter” that touches the human connection and sensitivity. Her music, which started from acoustic folk to a more indie-pop style, is gently poignant and has a bit of an edge that reminds one of Phoebe Bridgers. The birth of the new ethereal artist néomí began with a piano…

Maria Sibylla Merian (2 April 1647 – 13 January 1717) was the daughter of the printmaker Matthias Merian and the step-daughter of the still-life painter Jacob Marrel.
She was a talented artist who was trained in flower painting by Marrel.
From an early age, she was fascinated by insects and their life cycles and undertook research into the phenomenon of metamorphosis, which was then only partially understood.
She published her findings in a series of books, illustrated with beautifully-composed plates in which each insect life-cycle was illustrated on the appropriate food plant.
In 1699, having encountered exotic insects in the cabinets of natural history collectors in Amsterdam, Merian and her younger daughter Dorothea set sail for Suriname, in South America, which was then a Dutch colony.
There, they studied the life cycles of Surinamese insects until their return to Europe in 1701.
Merian published her Surinamese research as the Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium (The Metamorphosis of the Insects of Suriname) in 1705.
The book was very well-received, and by her death, Merian was well-regarded throughout Europe as both an entomologist and an artist.

Maria Sibylla Merian was born #OTD (German, 2 Apr 1647 – 13 Jan 1717).
Here are a few of her works that were recently on display at the “Making Her Mark: A History of Women Art in Europe, 1400-1800” exhibition at Baltimore Museum of Art :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. “Pineapple with Cockroaches” in Dissertatio de Generatione et Metamorphosibus Insectorum Surinamensium... (Dissertation on the generations and metamorphosis of Surinamese insects), 1719
Bound volume of hand-colored engravings and etchings
“This ripening pineapple's sweet aroma attracts a swarm of cockroaches. Maria Sibylla Merian observed this interaction during a three-year, self-financed voyage with her daughter Dorothea Maria to the South American country of Suriname, then a Dutch colony, in 1699. While there, Merian studied the native plant and insect life, learning their uses and behavior from enslaved African and Indigenous guides working at the sugar plantation where she stayed. In her notes, Merian characterized the pineapple as "the most outstanding of all edible fruits" and cockroaches as "the most infamous of all insects in America."
Merian's illustrations innovatively presented insect life cycles, habitats, and the broader ecological dynamic. After returning to the Netherlands, Merian published an illustrated compilation, creating one of the most important natural history publications of the time.
Her daughters Dorothea Maria Graff and Johanna Helena Herolt-Graff continued to issue editions after Merian's death, such as this deluxe version, contributing to their mother's foundational reputation in entomology.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Frontispiece of Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandelung und sonderbare Blumen-Nahrung (The Wondrous Transformation of Caterpillars and their Curious Diet of Flowers), 1679-83
Bound volume w/ hand colored engraved illustrations
3. Convolvulus and Metamorphosis of the Convolvulus Hawk Moth, c.1670-1683
Watercolor w/ touches of opaque watercolor over indications in black chalk or graphite on vellum
“Maria Sibylla Merian had a close relationship with caterpillars, rearing them from egg to adult in her home over a decade. This engaging illustration of the life cycle of the convolvulus hawk moth on the wall above is the result of her sustained observations and her exceptional artistic talent. Creating an intertwined vignette of insect and plant life, Merian constructed a life cycle image that became a standard in scientific illustration and shaped the field of entomology. Her findings and illustrations contributed to a foundational reference text on insect metamorphosis, Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandlung und sonderbare Blumen-Nahrung, on display here.”

On Music as Space
On Music as Space
Because of its significance to social action and relations, space is theoretical tool in understanding power. Much power is spatialized, as the use and control of space are continuously negotiated. Those in power specifically, the state attempt to maintain their position through division and control of space, what Foucault calls spatial ‘techniques’ of domination: maps, censuses, quarantines,…

1707, o/d 58 x 46 Kopenhagen Statens Museum for Kunst
Dutch Painter: Dirk Valkenburgiyjj
TITLED: SLAVE DANCE
Article notes:
The Great Suriname Exhibition, in 2019 in De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.
Note: THIS EXHIBIT WAS THE FIRST TO BE APPROVED OF THE NUMEROUS REQUESTED IN THE NETHERLANDS....WHY?
"In itself an understandable choice because a ceremony or festivity can be seen in this work of art. The artist has depicted the large group of ‘partying’ people in great detail from myriad vantage points of the Surinamese people in community.( Although descriptions and accounts of this moment )".
HATE HOW THE WORK IS LITERALLY DEPICTING A CELEBRATION AND RITUAL AND IT STILL ENDED UP BEING
TITLED: SLAVE DANCE.
"This was also the case for another exhibition in the Nieuwe Kerk: Black is beautiful. Rubens to Dumas in 2008, which I curated".
One of the elements that has intrigued me for a longest time about this work is the woman with the bra on the far right. Did they already exist then? Did she invent it (I secretly hope so).
GIRL , IF YOU DON'T GET OUTTA HERE.
NOTHING I HATE MORE THAN A WHITE PERSON CURATING AN EXHIBIT CALLED "BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL". THIS IS WORTHY OF A KNIFE FIGHT!!!!

I know it's over now but I wanna encourage people to check out the Dutch Eurovision entry! It's a nice song with a beautiful video and it’s so disappointing that it got zero points from the audience. The artist is a Surinamese singer who moved to the Netherlands in 2014, and was inspired to write this song during the black lives matter protest last year. The song's chorus is in Sranan Tongo, an English-based creole language developed among slaves in Suriname. It's an expression which roughly translates to "even if you see my me as inferior, you will not break me". With other lyrics lyrics like:
They spat on your crown and they poisoned your ground
Your rhythm is rebellion, your rhythm is rebellion (oh-oh)
They burned your heroes at the stake
But your voice will echo all their names
The music video was filmed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, a museum whose history and contents are intertwined Holland’s colonial history. And it's a nice song! It's not my favourite of the competition, but it's a good song. And I hate to think what message this sends out that it didn't get ANY audience votes. Diverse voices should get a platform regardless of whether it's popular, but I'd hate it if this was used as a justification to not try again in the future. I'm happy that Holland put this artist and song forward in the first place, and hope that he's proud of his performance!
