Maria Sibylla Merian (2 April 1647 – 13 January 1717) was the daughter of the printmaker Matthias Merian and the step-daughter of the still-life painter Jacob Marrel.
She was a talented artist who was trained in flower painting by Marrel.
From an early age, she was fascinated by insects and their life cycles and undertook research into the phenomenon of metamorphosis, which was then only partially understood.
She published her findings in a series of books, illustrated with beautifully-composed plates in which each insect life-cycle was illustrated on the appropriate food plant.
In 1699, having encountered exotic insects in the cabinets of natural history collectors in Amsterdam, Merian and her younger daughter Dorothea set sail for Suriname, in South America, which was then a Dutch colony.
There, they studied the life cycles of Surinamese insects until their return to Europe in 1701.
Merian published her Surinamese research as the Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium (The Metamorphosis of the Insects of Suriname) in 1705.
The book was very well-received, and by her death, Merian was well-regarded throughout Europe as both an entomologist and an artist.

given his quiet arrival, desiring neither attention or having to play nice with some bourbon yet, there'd been no surprise that he hadn't yet crossed paths with his brother. who would want to stay within the chambers given to their family when they felt more like a cage? timur went searching. the grand halls unfamilar, the very last place he would choose to be. it was a conscious effort to not scowl until he turned a corner and saw matthias. ❝ there you are. ❞ a small grin tugged at the corners of his lips. ❝ too busy enjoying the great "wonders" of versailles to greet your own brother? ❞

Nikolas walked to the Swiss part of the palace, where he felt the safest and most comfortable. There, he was surrounded by people he knew and trusted, unlike the rest of the palace. He knew they were here to make alliances but Nikolas had never been good at that, he was pretty sure he would drive people away from them instead of bringing them in. “Hello brother.” He greeted Matthias with a small smile, as he walked into the common room. “How's your day been?”

It certainly looked as wrong as it felt - a Prince, dressed to the Nines in his military regalia, pinned with medals && stripes, tassels over the shoulders; his hair, even, slicked back, and navy blue sleeves covering the tattoos that plastered his arms. Hardly a man to make an appearance, especially at any officials functions, it was true Matthias was the black sheep of the Merian family; hell, he'd been to jail. A charity ball he'd been ordered to attend, and as he pulled up to the event late as fuck, sporting a biking jacket && helmet, every possible contradiction known to man was written out on his perplexing silhouette in the night... and he wasn't alone. " I thought you were too important for bullshit gigs like this. " Matthias commented, deciding to pull out a cigarette && take his time before entering the hell that was a political && professional party indoors. Galas, especially the benefit kinds, were all a pain in ass; and he forgot his mask, anyway. Lit cigarette met his lips, and he gave a scoff with his exhale. " You seem to think you are, anyway. "

of course, when word of a summit for the bourbon's restoration, the celebration and show of strength, reached the merian palace, it created quite the stir. there was definite need for representation, so ahead went the militia, first, to scope things out. leading his own battalion, and acting as a political diplomat of the crown, was matthias. and now - his sister, had finally arrived.
gruff, he stood a tall menace beside her, eyes a shifty blue as he scowled at the french guards. " i have seen far greater. it looks worse on the inside. " always the negative side, matthias tended to remain. his hate for france, for what it took, it bled through to eve his appreciation of the bourbon decadence. but then, eyes looked up, and he could see in a way how she had been entranced. the frown grew.
" come on. i will show you to our apartments, and then to the dining hall, and the best gardens. later, we can go out riding. the pathes in the woods get confusing, but - i drew a map. " matthias had few weaknesses; family, his biggest.

location : the entrance to french court, late evening
the night air was still thick with the heat of the day, as though the sun itself still lingered in the dark sky. it was much warmer here than switzerland, warmer even than england (where she had stopped on the journey over). her first proper time in france, and it was everything she could have imagined - perhaps even greater. staring up at the palace, her eyes were wide with wonder. the humble stone castle she knew to be home paled in comparison to the palace before her. the checkerboard floors, the golden archways and windows taller than the fir trees of home. her late arrival was expected, she had been invited to join her brothers now that it seemed to be safe for her to attent french court and though she had done her best to arrive quietly, there were still a few members of the court standing ready to greet her - she was still a crown princess, after all. "this is magnificent."

Atalanta Fugiens or Atalanta Fleeing is an emblem book with an alchemical theme by Michael Maier (1568–1622), published by Johann Theodor de Bry in Oppenheim in 1617 (2nd edition 1618). It consists of 50 discourses with illustrations by Matthias Merian, each of which is accompanied by an epigrammatic verse, prose and a musical fugue. It may therefore be considered an early example of multimedia.
At the bottom is Vulcanus, the next shows Mercurius, the third is the Moon, into the top the sun rises, which is the fire of nature. Let this chain be your commander, that it may guide your hands in art." The lower, elemental fire, whose regulation is the alpha and omega of the work, penetrates all the others and magnetically holds the chain together. Each fire has its own centre and its own movement in the Work, and one affects the other. The lunar and the mercurial fire are menstrua, strong solvents. He calls them dragons, which devour, spur on and transform the serpents of their own sex.
In the illustration (one of fifty) the upper solar fire is the great arcanum, which Paracelsus called the bright "essential fire", in contrast to the dark, elemental fire also necessary for the work (simular to the heat of digestion). This fire is the creative agent in the Work, slow burning and constant. Note the close kinship of the Latin names Sol and Sal. The colors from bottom to top are blue, white, yellow and red.

It seems that 20th century philosophical currents of thought explore mind as a symbol producing substance, able somehow to create a reality from this floating world of interconnected symbols. Symbols, the basis of mind connect in a fashion, anchored by "feeling" so as to rank in some sort of hierarchy.
Jung and others of "like mind" saw patterns in the individual and the collective purporting some fundamental preconcious psychic structures which drive conciousness into predetermined templates.
Alchemy as an imaginal process, explored matter and mind as if they were connected at the root and is fertile ground for exploring mind as a phenomenon. There were stages in the process of refinement imagined as a four or seven step process. Four anchored in the organization of space, and seven anchored in the moving stars. In the four stepped process, each step is associated with a color. Starting with the blackness, then whitness, yellowness and finally redness.
The albedo, the whitening, a kind of ablution, is pictured in Atalanta Fugiens or Atalanta Fleeing an emblem book by Michael Maier (1568–1622), published by Johann Theodor de Bry in Oppenheim in 1617 (2nd edition 1618). It consists of 50 discourses with illustrations by Matthias Merian, each of which is accompanied by an epigrammatic verse, prose and a musical fugue. It may therefore be considered an early example of multimedia. In plate 33 the albedo is represented visually the hermaphrodite stretched on a bier under the sign of the new Moon and the eclisped Sun. The motto reads, "The hermaphrodite, lying in darkness like a dead creature, is in need of the fire". As evidenced by reference to Bonellus in the text, the illustration refers to the 32nd sermon of the Turba Philosophorum which reads: "Bonellus: ... "But sons of the doctrine, that substance will need fire, until the spirit of its body is transformed and sent away through the nights, like a man in his grave becomes dust. When this happens, the immortal principle of becoming will give back to the body its soul and its spirit. Now strengthened and improved by its decomposition is resurrected. So it is necessary, sons of the doctrine, to consume by fire the substance (mind) until it becomes ashes that are lightened by the heavenly dew. And consider artists that are unable to paint with their own tincture until they are ground into powder. The same with images in stone, so I advise you to burn up the body (ego) to ashes, then wash away the blackess to form a new body."

I’ve been commissioned to create a series of 3D prints for this group exhibition at the Ludwig Forum in Aachen, west Germany. Opening 21 Feb 2019.
More info:
The exhibition Lust der Täuschung. From ancient art to virtual reality, the wide-ranging panorama is dedicated to the most diverse aesthetic forms of appearance of illusion, illusion and simulation. With around 100 works from four millennia, the exhibition presents fascinating examples from the fields of painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, immersive and interactive media art, augmented and virtual reality (AR / VR), applied art and design. It thus offers a highly entertaining course through the (art) history of illusion and simulation. In times of fake news, alternative realities and a general uncertainty about our idea of reality, the show stimulates a highly topical discourse.

( alexander ludwig , 28 , he/him , cis man , merian 4 ) - have you seen MATTHIAS MERIAN? we’ve heard through the grapevine that they’re PROTECTIVE but also DESTRUCTIVE. when you think of them , you think of GOLDEN FLAMES FLICKERING IN CRUMBLING CHAPELS, DISTANT SOUNDS OF COMBAT && THE FEELING OF SNOWFALL, CRIMSON AGAINST ICE, A SNEER TO HIDE A HIDDEN HEART.
TWs; violence, war, miscarriage, death, loss, blood mention/injury mentions, religious themes.
name; matthias merian.
nicknames; none.
birth date; april 11th, an aries
orientation; heterosexual
relationship; single, one former marriage, annulled.
politics; fuck the french, war is the only way to protect one's self && nation, trust no one.
religion; struggling within his faith; used to be a devout catholic, now feels he doesn't know what to believe.
languages; tba.
headcanons && backstory.
the beginning of his story is one full of family, laughter, joy, and activity. long nights spent in the church, a head ducked in prayer, chasing his siblings around the training grounds; teasing his youngest brother, finding lizards to spook his sister, eating persimmons from the trees in the horse yards. he'd always been strong, climbing trees as soon as he could walk, and never balking at a skinned knee. when matthias first grabbed a sword, later a musket, he realized he was a proficient fighter - and balanced his time between church && prayer, and fighting && training. he was one of the best; brutal, a force to reckon with, and took on the hope to be a defender. switzerland trained a powerful army NOT for themselves, but to help others in need, to assist others during wartime. love came swiftly, or some form of it. maybe it was never meant for more than just a crush in the gardens, a laugh after a first kiss, but she was a perfect puzzle piece to what matthias thought his life would be. a wedding followed quickly- they'd courted only a year, and as a new badge was pinned to his uniform, matthias wondered if he was on the top of the world. but then france attacked, and only sweden answered their call for help. switzerland was left largely on their own, but had the forces to defend themselves. the battle was brutal, and it thinned their army, it changed the lives of his family, even for his sweet younger brother, now broken from the sight of the horrors of a battlefield washed in blood. matthias was full of anger; he had hate in his heart, and nowhere to put it. god had betrayed switzerland. his father had died. his friends had died. matthias lost his faith, he lost his way, and he found himself growing cold && harsh under the weight of his anger. romance fizzled out quickly with he && his wife after switzerland pulled through their victory, and he returned home. he was too angry now to remember to be a good husband, and though he was never abusive... he was absent, he was cold, his heart had closed, and she found herself falling into deep unhappiness. matthias did not even realize that she written to the pope, to request an annulment. it was granted only when the prince departed from the church in a raging outburst, cursing god && his followers, shouting in the middle of the chapel his grief, his anger towards the sky, calling their priest a fool. he was marked as haunted, a man who had lost his god, and she was given permission to divorce him without fault. he did not know until after she left, that during the months since he had been home, his wife had been with child, but had lost it in the night while he was gone, bitching in a cavern with his valets about the woes of the world. their marriage was a three-year ordeal, and when she left, his home stayed dark && empty && alone until matthias moved back into the swiss palace from his estate, and took up his place within the militia once more.

Copperplate engraving of a salamander by Matthäus Merian for Atalanta Fugiens by Michael Maier, ca. 1618. It’s one of those public domain images you see everywhere.
Note that the artist's forename is often Latinized or Anglicized, so different sources call him "Matthaeus," "Matthias," "Mathias," or "Matthew." His surname is sometimes also Latinized to "Merianus." The title "the Elder" can be given as "der Ältere" or simply left out. This sort of thing can make research tedious.
