Fantastic idea. Let's give it a shot! I would love to see if a creator could and would be able to create a maxis-match classic Ballet Workout Set. Including two simple Tutu's one classic short the other one long. A classic leotard, wrap top, wrap skirt, ankle leg warmers as well as a pair of thigh high ones. All in classic ballet colors black, white and pink. ;) Nothing fancy! If the creator wants some examples what I mean I could provide pics. But that would be so dope! ❤️

#SSSWish I'm half Filipino, but I hardly see any Filipino content in the Sims Community. I would love to own a Maxis Match Barong or Maria Clara dress for formal events in the game. I think it would be a great way to add more representation in the game, especially when I know there are a handful of PilAms and Pinoy players. Thanks for hearing me out, and thanks for all the work you do to make this games playable. I really enjoy all your hard work!

#SSSWishlist hello! I would love if cc creators can consider making more patterns for Kimono/Yukata (traditional Japanese clothing). I find the in-game versions kinda bland, and there are not many floral Kimonos even though its commonly seen in Japanese festivals. Would appreciate if there's Japanese hairstyle cc with big flowerly accessory to pair with the Kimono too! Same for the male Yukatas, just not floral print maybe. If it's not too much, children's version is also appreciated!

For the SSS Wishlist, I would Love to see a set of three to four hairstyles, all with the same texture. My wish is to have more swatches for the snowboard and skis. If there could be more LED designs, interesting designs and the swatches for kids for T-E boards. It would be great.

The other wish would be to have more Kimono designs in Maxis Match and/or recolors with more patterns. There are so many patterns that I have seen while looking at real life kimonos and there are so many patterns, styles and colors that are missing in the game.

This seems like a fun idea! What I have been wanting for ages (like since TS2 era ages) is a hair style that completely covers one eye, like Violet at the start of The Incredibles. Most of the peekaboo bangs hairs I've seen are a little *too* stylish and I mostly just want one where someone is clearly trying to cover up half their face with it.

I would love to see more horse poses with tack. Severinka’s horses are beautiful but it drives me crazy, posing sims on horseback with the illusion of tack (bridles, saddles, etc) I would love to see some Severinka shaped tack be made. Poses would be a bonus!

#SSSWish - I would love to see a someone put together clothing that accurately reflects the Starfleet uniforms seen on the television shows, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (collar version), "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (colored shoulders) or the later movie uniforms (grey shoulders w/ colored undershirt). I've seen people asking for these uniforms for quite some time now, and I think, if done well, they could be a popular download. A separate chest combadge accessory would be nice too.

Hey there, that #SSSWish thing is a super cool idea! I do have a wish too - I would love to see the EL utility jumpsuit converted for male framed sims. It can be unlocked by creating an override and unchecking the frame restrictions in S4S, but then the body changes to a female frame. So if anybody out there could do that properly, I'd be extremely grateful :3

#SSSWish i've been looking all over for a version of a torc to use in my historical plays-- it's an old celtic type of necklace, made of iron, sort of twisted into a collar around the neck... i've seen sims 3 versions of one floating around, so if someone would even be so kind as to convert one of those to the sims 4 i would be so happy!!!

Hi, for the SSSWishList I would love it if someone were to either convert or create a more dainty engagement ring type ring for the masculine frame, kind of like the rings glitterberrysims has made for feminine frames, like her pearl antique ring for example. I’ve always wanted more pretty and delicate rings for my male sims but i can never find any that truly work with the masculine frame without most of the ring being absorbed by their fingers lol

#SSSWishlist i know i already saw some people here ask for more yukata/kimono swatches here and i would like the say i really do think we need them (not just for the adults but the younger ages too, id like for the toddlers kimono not to have the hifu? vest as well but that sounds more complicated).

BUT for my wish i would like to see some proper tabi socks in the game, for all ages + genders, and also for the geta sandals to be made available for children and toddlers. My Super Secret Wish is a mod, or even a tweak of an existing mod, that stops toddlers from shying away from hugs they ask for during the “Check Toddler” interaction. It is *so* irritating to see a toddler respond to a❓with a ❤️ and open arms then step back, often with a 💔, and push the adult away. I’ve tried to stop it with MCCC but no luck.

One of my favorite parts of the game is creating a restaurant or a vet clinic, but the employees are impossible to keep satisfied and they all eventually quit. It would be nice if there was a way to keep them permanently satisfied, or at least make it easier. There is a mod for this but it is extremely outdated and doesn't work anymore. If anyone could update it or make a new one that would be great! 😁

I was hoping someone could create an edit of the Snowy Escape female shirt with the turtle neck underneath and open/unbuttoned shirt, here is a link. If they could make it so that the turtle neck and shirt can be different colours, like having the turtle neck have an option under accessories to change colours that overrides the original turtleneck’s colour would be amazing! Hi ! There is quite a few things I’d like, but I narrowed it down to three “small” things:

- An accessory top with a high neckline and no sleeves - just to hide cleavage - maybe with some lace at the edge ? and several grey and pastel colors please.

- Some accessory prints for shirts, like those tukete has, maybe some aimed at kids and toddlers too ?

- Makeup for kids. Some people let their kids wear makeup in real life, but adult cc makeup don’t look right on kids, so if anyone is interested in trying… I’d like eye-shadow and lipstick, with some discreet options (but you can go all out too of course).

Hello! i’m not sure if its just my game bugging but the male child tiny living hair is broken and i don’t know where to start on fixing it. i tried to find a fix online but found nothing. in my game the hairline for that hair is so bad and its unfortunate cause it used to be my fav child hair. if someone that mods or makes cc could fix it or make a default replacement, i would forever be grateful.

My wish is for a mod that allows you to select a sim that's in a pose and make them take a picture without having to come out of their pose and go to the camera. What I would really like is just something cute for boys! Hello! This #SSSWish is such a fun idea~ Personally, I'd love if someone updated the Plantsims mods that have broken over the numerous updates. Like, G1G2's Revamped Plantsims, Triplis' Plantsim Interactions, and Simonch8's No Cooldown & Trait mods. I've always loved Plantsims since Sims 2 & 3 days, but my knowledge of modding (and especially updating mods) is near nonexistent, so I can't do this myself. #ssswish This is such a lovely idea! There are so many fun wishes! What I’d like to have (and I think would also be useful for other Simmers) is a wedding themed recolor of the “large pile of presents.” I usually put one of those piles in my wedding venue so that the bride and groom can “open presents” together. But the colors that are on the original are not what you usually see on presents at weddings. (I usually opt for the one that is mostly purple, since purple and lavender are my favorite colors.) What I’d like to have are recolors in white, white/gold, and white/silver. Maybe some white/pastels (especially lavender, pink and blue. The white/pastel recolors would also be nice for having a party that you call a “baby shower” especially if yellow and light green were also available. That kind of party isn’t in the game, but it should be!)

I don’t see the #SSSwish I submitted on your public list (I forgot to use the hashtag before) so I’m submitting it again. I would love to see a mod, or tweak of an existing mod, that stops toddlers from pulling away from a hug after they asked for one in response to a Check Toddler. The toddler will hold up its arms with a ❤️ in the speech bubble then step back and refuse the hug, and the relationship takes a hit. I tried MCCC’s tuner to stop it but it didn’t work.

i would love some…chinese cc haha! With snowy escape there’s more build items that can be used, I’ve noticed there tends to be a lot of Japanese inspired cc even before that pack, but not a lot of things from other parts of Asia, especially ancient cultures or cultural items like instruments (decor), clothing, furniture (lohan beds), etc. I’ve gone looking but most of what I’ve found is locked behind chinese-only forums and is usually alpha…I just think it would be cool to see some mm stuff from other places esp as fandoms get more globalized

This is an absolutely fantastic idea! I haven't been able to look around lately but I noticed that most rings/hand accessories aren't compatible with SkinDetail eyelashes. My wish is exactly hand accessories, specifically wedding rings, which don't conflict with SkinDetail eyelashes. It may be helpful to know that plumbobteasociety managed it in their RRS pack. I have another #SSSWish (if you don't mind). I don't know if it already exists but a mod which adds more family relationship options to CAS or the Sim menu. here’s why Thieves in Time is a bad game

before y’all try it, i just want to say that i’ll be as unapologetically petty and sarcastic as i want and fucking rip this game to shreds. yes, this is how i’ve spent my days since Thieves in Time came out. sitting alone in my room, staring at the wall, crying and complaining. because it has since been my life’s aim and dream to think about it every day, state the negative things about it, and become an evil essay witch on this half-dead website. *evil laugh*

Story:

References: i want to start with the smallest problem, but one that annoys me to this day. in the original trilogy, there weren’t a lot of references but the ones that were included were meticulously researched and well thought-out (i’m specifically referring to that Neil Diamond Carmelita vinyl gag, but can’t find the original post). the references in Thieves in Time however, were obviously just the creators’ interests. Turning Japanese, Clan of the Cave Bear and Bentley’s “hacksona” presented as Rambo just scream 1980s (which i’m assuming is the decade the creators grew up in), and Of Mice and Men is classic literature about the Great Depression, which subsequently started being taught in school in the US during the 1980s. it feels like the creators just went ‘let’s discuss what our lives had in common during our teen years and put that in’ instead of researching it first. and, here’s the thing: when you’re adding references, in order to make them funny or interesting, they have to fit in with the property or the character that’s connected to them in some way. Don Octavio was an opera aficionado so his episode’s title card pays homage to the Phantom of the Opera, young Muggshot was influenced by the movie “The Dogfather” because he’s a gangster, etc. these were funny because they were so spot-on with these characters. if every character in the Sly Cooper universe references the same type of stuff (from the 1980s) and shares the same interests, it’s just claustrophobic and uninteresting. i’m pretty sure i’m not the only one who had to look up these ultra-hetero, scrotum references when the game came out. that’s because they were specifically tailored to be funny to them, and not their target demographic which were kids in 2013.

Narrative: now that we got that out of the way, let’s look at the narrative. at the end of Sly 3, Bentley says he’s building a time machine. Sanzaru took that joke and decided to run with it as the premise for their game. ok, not the best idea, but i get it - you’re literally picking up where the last game left off. since all the storylines were wrapped up, they could’ve done something different like Sly’s kids or Bentley and Murray’s families, but this isn’t an essay about suggestions so...... time travel (i want to say that it’s, again, an 80s reference but whatever) was pretty ‘out there’ in 2013. i mean, even Plants vs Zombies 2, which was released that year, had to do with time travel (yes, i’m referencing an app). but Sanzaru had the advantage of applying this premise onto already established mythos and lore. the story had definite potential: someone is threatening Sly’s lineage so he has to travel back in time to save the day. the player would get to explore new locations and iconic eras in history, and, of course, the main selling point: playable ancestors. how could you screw that up? welp.... let’s think about the plot holes here for a sec. Bentley’s device would take the gang back in time when given an item from the specific era. stop. this right here is called ‘over-complicating’. how did they know the items would take them directly to the point where the specific ancestor was in danger? the Feudal Japan period lasted for 700 years: how did the machine know when and where to drop them off? and if the gang could return to the present at any time, why didn’t they do so when they were in trouble? oh right, the machine was broken. so how did they return the baddies to the present after they defeated them? i mean, why did they use the Grizz’s crown to travel to Medieval England if they went back to the present to drop him off to Interpol first? and on that note, how did they drop the baddies off to jail without getting caught and without Carmelita being around? i can already hear you thinking but these are total details that aren’t important, you jerk! well, yea, they truly are details and i truly am overthinking it. and yes, i truly am a jerk. but let me tell you something: when Sanzaru chose to make a new Sly game, did they not think ‘oh we’ll have to follow up Sly 2 and Sly 3′s stories’ which were well thought-out narratives with depth and various themes and didn’t have huge plot holes (as seen by my analysis through the episode project) ???? and did they also not think that their game would come out eight years after the last one, having expectations at an all-time high???? yea, that’s what i thought.

Characters: i’ll make a different section for Sucker Punch’s characters, so this is for Sanzaru’s original ones. name one iconic original character from Thieves in Time. i’ll wait... nope. not one. that’s because all of them were absolute shit. and here’s where i want to touch upon Sanzaru’s over-reliance on the trilogy. Ms Decibel (perhaps the most obvious copy) is a mix between Don Octavio, Miz Ruby, and the Contessa. El Jefe is Rajan if he went to the gym. Toothpick has Sir Raleigh’s temper and tendency to grow in size. and the Grizz is... whatever the fuck he is. (don’t worry i didn’t forget Le Paradox and Bob). there’s a difference between studying & creating similar characters and blatantly plagiarizing older characters because you lack the creativity. oh, boo-hoo this evil jerk’s telling it how it is. this set of villains is so lacklustre, i don’t even know where to begin. El Jefe is a tiger, even though we’ve already had two major tiger villains and one tiger flashlight guard. ok. Rajan could summon lightning because of the Clockwerk heart but El Jefe can do the same, how exactly? Toothpick is an armadillo (good) from Russia (better) with an obsession with the West (excellent) who can also grow huge (very bad). it’s never explained how or why. why?????? just tell me why. i want to know. i really want to know. Ms Decibel is an elephant who got into a tragic accident which left her with the power of hypnosis. music and hypnosis have already been done, but ok, i’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. so how do we use this character? spend the entirety of her screen time making jokes about... wait for it... her weight !!! this is top-notch comedy... really? like... really? the creators’ humor is a crime, at best. fart jokes and fat jokes all around. oh, and then there’s the Grizz. what the fuck where they thinking? just, what the fuck. i guess the guys at Sanzaru thought black people speak in rap? is that it? apart from it being extremely offensive, it’s also a blatant copy of Dimitri’s backstory. like, his introductory cutscene even has his paintings thrown at him and into the trash, like the intro cutscene for The Black Chateau. honestly, all of these villains caused me several types of pain, but not as much as...

Bob & Le Paradox: the absolute worst. i can just imagine the meeting going something like this: Sly’s ancestors are awesome! i wish we could fit them all in the game... here’s an amazing idea! what if we use one of the game’s few levels to introduce a brand new ancestor! yea! let’s make him dumb as fuck, strip him of any athletic prowess, and retcon the entire lineage by having him be the first Cooper ever! the kids will love a prehistoric level! ..... could you kindly point out where and when did ANYONE ask for this? i remember @ironicsnap saying something like the game is good until Bob. no, it was already bad - Bob just lowered the standard. like, a lot. people love Murray and his gameplay is neat, but no one ever thought ‘oh i wish we had a Cooper character with Murray’s game style’. why would they waste the opportunity to bring in Henriette, Thaddeus, Otto, literally any ancestor? why??? but they went ahead and created their own Cooper, and that wasn’t even the end of it. they had to make him dumb. they had to make him unbearable. they had to ruin the Cooper ancestry by adding this mess to the lineage. Sucker Punch made sure that all the ancestors were unique, but at the same time made all of them suave and funny and slick and you wish you could be them! well, fuck that. also, his name is Bob. Bob Cooper. it’s been 7 fucking years and i still can’t wrap my head around it.... so now, let’s talk about Le Paradox. i don’t have to mention the previous main villains, but i will. Clockwerk killed Sly’s ancestors and father, and was seemingly an eternal threat. Neyla was a psychopath who fooled everyone on her journey to becoming immortal by resurrecting Clockwerk. Dr M opened up the possibility for Sly’s dad to be a jerk instead of a hero, and died trying to unlock the Coopers’ legacy. how does Le Paradox compare? well, he’s a sleazebag skunk who was mad because of his dad’s downfall to the Coopers. that’s it. no twist, no depth, no clever dialogue. nothing. there’s nothing there. this is a new character, unfamiliar to everyone, who was hyped up for 5 levels and defeated in the conclusion. why was he a match for Sly? i don’t know. how did he fight for his life and ultimately tricked Sly into helping him? i don’t know. how the hell did he kidnap Carmelita? i don’t know. was it the power of persuasion? no, he’s revolting. so i literally don’t know. there’s no backstory, no fleshing-out the character, nothing. all we’re given to work with is a brief info-dump about his dad and how he escaped prison. i don’t know what else to say apart from how big a humiliation this was for Sanzaru and their team of writers. you had 8 years to work on something and this is what you came up with? anything would be better. anything would best this utter cliché of a villain, a distasteful misogynist, crybaby, idiot with an accent. literally anything.

Arcs & Themes: let’s take a look at the formulaic subplots for the gang’s members. apart from dealing with Le Paradox, everyone had a small arc. Sly had to deal with his break-up with Carmelita. Bentley had to deal with his break-up with Penelope. Murray had to deal with playing second fiddle to Bob. Carmelita was a damsel in distress and sex bait for the ancestors. the ancestors had their own mini storylines along with reacting to Sly’s presence. there you have it. i summarised it all for you, nice and neatly. are there any themes like in the previous games? nope. i promise you i’m not lying when i say that i tried hard to come up with something, even some speck of a detail i could use to over-analyse the story and come up with some ideas on themes. nothing. there are no themes. the subplots are character-driven and the player gives it 0 emotional investment. there is nothing to analyse, nothing to talk about. maybe even a theme for each level, like a spooky level or something? nope. the levels are dependent on eras and historical periods. the variation here is ok. Feudal Japan, Wild West, Prehistoric Australia, Medieval England and Ancient Arabia - pretty good selection. i’ll give them credit for it. but that’s it. due to the absence of themes, the hubs feel empty. there’s no replayability factor. after you collect the bottles and masks and treasures, there’s nothing. i would spend hours revisiting the trilogy’s hubs, just roaming around. the hubs here are huge and empty. there’s nothing to reminisce about. nothing to recall. oh that’s where this mission went down. no, nothing like that. the aforementioned subplots are resolved during mission cutscenes and then they’re gone. you don’t have to explore spooky Prague alone as Bentley to have him overcome his fears, you don’t have to find out miners abducted Murray’s beloved Guru and search the Australian outback for him, you don’t have to hold back your tears when you’ve reached the end of the Cooper Vault and Sly asks his dad for help. nothing.

Gameplay:

Controls: as soon as i laid my hands on the controller the first time i played the game, that fateful afternoon, i knew something was up. Sly would respond 1 second late after you pushed something on the controller. it felt clunky, is what i’m trying to say or, as my sister put it, it felt heavy. and she was right. the controls were clunky and heavy and didn’t feel light, like playing as a thief should feel. i don’t know shit about game mechanics but this definitely didn’t feel right. the hubs are also chunky in design, the cliffs are huge and so cyclical or hexagonal, that when you parachute your way to them and are just an inch close, Sly will automatically just drop because he can’t grab onto them. running as Sly doesn’t feel fast, silently obliterating guards from behind feels slow, and swinging, grabbing, pickpocketting, and hanging aren’t fun anymore. presentation-wise, @designraccoon goes into detail here, in an absolute gem of a post. in short, the gameplay animations make Sly look less sneaky. Sanzaru didn’t even consider a thief’s movements.

Missions: why the fuck would you remove the player’s option to choose between which mission to do first? why would you do that? the game lays out what goes first, sometimes having only one mission available in the hub. and the missions aren’t even enjoyable. firstly, the loading screens take up to 5 minutes, maybe even 7-8. secondly, there’s hacking every 2 missions. the missions don’t have any dialogue to make them fun, lack in interesting puzzles, what more can i say? they’re overly easy and lack any challenge whatsoever. at least there’s variation in gameplay (hacking, RC car, fishing, costumes, ancestors, turret etc.) but because of the controls, even these get tiresome. the missions are solely there to progress the story and that’s why the operations are merely ‘storm the main baddie’. the trilogy had some pretty interesting missions which made sure to complete jobs required to take down the big bad. e.g. kidnap General Clawfoot to take down the security, hack Contessa’s computer to make sure Carmelita will be freed, steal voices to tempt Neyla, and then take down the Contessa. the missions in Thieves in Time lack substance and variety. and the hacking (all three styles) sucks.

Collectibles: here’s another fantastic idea: have players collect costumes in order to collect bottles in order to collect treasures in order to collect masks in order to unlock funky Sanzaru logo-themed merch! what was the reason for the collectibles? in previous games, collecting all bottles would unlock special abilities. that was it. it’s the same thing here too, but there’s less incentive? i mean when you have to collect 1000 things, what’s the point? the treasures are random and very few are references to the trilogy, so whatever. and the masks unlock... superhero costumes for what reason exactly? oh, and then there’s also the achievements for your Playstation account, like ‘open the map in every single location you visit’. what fun! if the reason for collecting the treasures is to play godawful hacking minigames in order to get masks, what’s the point? decorate your paraglider with the Sanzaru logo? or have Bentley dress up as discount Robocop? i mean including masks in the interior locations was cool, but the bottles were always supposed to be something you could do whenever your soul desired. sometimes i left them last before the operation, sometimes i collected them before the first mission. so i was pissed when i found out that, in some cases, you had to unlock the episode’s costume in order to get the all the bottles. so, fuck off.

Animation: i’ll keep this short. the animation was terrible. do you remember that tumblr blog from a while back, where she dedicated the posts to pointing out the mistakes in the animated cutscenes? yeah. point is, there were lots of them. the animation style was bad, the character design was ugly, the characters’ movements were unnatural. everything about it was shit. looking past the bad decision to drop the trilogy’s comicbook-style animated cutscenes, couldn’t they have hired someone better? someone with more experience? their concept art was awesome. couldn’t they hire that guy and have it be comicbook style if he wasn’t trained in animation?

Legacy:

The Players: let me ask a genuine question: who was this game made for? kids growing up in 2013? maybe so. because it feels like Sanzaru didn’t even consider the fans of the trilogy. actually, it felt like a huge fuck you. Sucker Punch made their trilogy for whoever. there were great stuff for kids, but adults would pick up and appreciate the references, the real-life setting (e.g. tobacco use, existence of nightclubs, spice instead of drugs, etc.). that’s why all three games are timeless classics. judging by Thieves in Time’s humor, the game wasn’t targeted for adults. so, it doesn’t make sense to use an already established property, beloved by its fans, to attract a new audience consisting of nine year-olds who’d laugh at Murray dressing up as a woman. if they really wanted to appeal to the fans of the original, why retcon everything? why change who the first Cooper was? when the gang’s stranded in Saudi Arabia, why have Sly say ‘i couldn't remember a time since we've teamed up that we felt so defeated’? the gang’s been in way deeper shit before. why the ‘Sly’s dad vs Le Paradox’s dad’ deus ex machina? Sly’s dad wasn’t famous because of stealing the world’s largest diamond, what the fuck are you even talking about? do the guys at Sanzaru have such big egos and bravado that they needed to change the original games’ lore? were they so preoccupied with leaving their signature on a property which was never their own? i don’t know who needs to read this, but i’m stating FACTS.

Characters: now let’s talk about Sanzaru’s treatment of the Cooper gang and the ancestors (female characters will get their own section). why would you change the characters like that? if it wasn’t for the voice acting, i’d say this is a completely different Cooper gang. there’s no wise-cracking band of best friends, going on heists and being proud of their brotherhood and bond. all that is replaced with the formulaic story arcs for each member. the trilogy’s cutscenes and dialogues made sure to establish how Sly, Bentley and Murray have lived together since they met at the orphanage, play videogames all day and order chinese food and pizza and whatever. through missions and their adventures, they face obstacles they have to overcome as a gang, and when Sly 3 came around, their friendship was put to the ultimate test when they almost disbanded. Thieves in Time was too lazy to add to this. Sanzaru thought ‘oh the trilogy showed how they’re best friends so we might as well have them focus on their own stories separately’ and if this is truly the case then i ask again: who was this game made for? because new fans would never know how tight the gang was just by playing Thieves in Time. there’s a lack of genuine friendship moments. like, what happened when Sly came back after faking his amnesia? that’s completely ignored. where’s the witty banter? the ‘wizard & sitting duck’ type of jokes? nothing of the sort. what we get is fart jokes and Murray wanting to dress up as a woman. on that note, what was that all about? ok, have him dress up as a geisha to get in. fine. have El Jefe slap his ass, have him perform in a painfully lengthy dance sequence, have him dress like that during the rest of the episode, and then have him be persistent about getting the belly-dancing gig? the hell? Murray was always kinda goofy but this just feels kinda homophobic? it feels dragged out and unfunny. and then there’s the ancestors. i said it once before and i’ll say it again, Sanzaru deprived me of a buff Arab daddy Salim Al Kupar and gave us that elderly shit instead. all jokes aside, the redesigns were uninteresting. why take away Tennessee Kid’s facial hair and give it to Galleth? i legitimately think all the ancestors were boring. i mean, their gameplay was cool, especially Tennessee Kid’s guns, but in terms of character, they were just some dudes. did they believe that Sly was their descendant from the future? maybe. did they care? nope. they all had the same storyline of dealing with Sly’s arrival, flirting with Carmelita and getting their canes stolen. that was it. the fans waited for so long to get even a glimpse of the ancestors in action, and Sanzaru downplayed all of them. they reduced them to useless idiots too occupied with women and food, incapable of getting their canes back from stupid Le Paradox. and they didn’t even stick to the lore. no ma’am. let’s make Rioichi the inventor of sushi !! because that makes total sense and would defo fit in with the character and the property! why. just, why. you were handed the lore !!! you were given all this rich backstory and you threw it all away to replace it with trash !!! complete trash.

Changes & Inconsistency: i want to briefly mention some changes that pissed me off. where’s the laser glide move? it was an important turning point at the end of Sly 3, so why did they get rid of it? Sly is a master thief who’s traveling back in time, so you’d think they’d actually make him a master thief. also, the changes in the binocucom and Bentley’s slideshows in order to modernise them. if Sucker Punch managed to place the mission starting points at locations where the binocucom would show the objective clearly, so could Sanzaru. instead, they chose to have it be a moving camera, floating around the hub. and Bentley’s slideshows were absolute classics, opportunities to include gags and have Bentley show off in his own way. you just had to change it into a tablet, didn’t you. omg you’re still looking at small details like these? yes sweetie, i consider the details because i think they shape the game more than anything. if i didn’t consider the details, then my opinion on the game would be incomplete. when i praise the trilogy i don’t only look at story and gameplay. because i’m unbiased like that. here, i’d also like the mention Dimitri. what a fucking waste. you either include him in the game or you don’t. but don’t give me some half-baked shit on how he’s working for the gang back in present day. Dimitri staying home, waiting on the gang to call him in order for him to give them details on the villains. how does that even slightly resemble anything about Dimitri’s character? they didn’t even include his voice, some greasy sweet Raccoonus Doodus dialogue.

Female Characters: you know it’s all been leading up to this. this is the crux of the Thieves in Time hate. i don’t want to say the game is misogynistic so i’ll call it anti-feminist. why? just answer me. why? why did you have to disrespect Carmelita like that? right off the bat, they swapped the pants for the skirt. in what world does an active inspector who’s always on the scene wear a skirt? Carmelita now wears a skirt because her only role in the game is to be the love interest. Carmelita now wears bright red lipstick and has a new hairstyle, which would be ok if only it wasn’t Carmelita. Carmelita now plays up her inner sassy Latina because she’s pigeonholed into the ‘angry ex girlfriend’ role. they compartmentalised her, tried to sexualise her because she couldn’t possibly be one of the boys. nope. let’s take a respected woman, high in rank and as physically able as Sly, and turn her into a cliché, an angry ex girlfriend for comedic relief, strip her of her abilities and have her be kidnapped twice, have every exchange with her be about how attractive she is, have almost every male character in the game flirt with her, have her boyfriend be jealous of his own ancestors because they’re flirting with her in order to create purposeless love triangles, and then, after all that, dress her up as a belly dancer and distract some guards while the rest of the gang do the heavy lifting. that last one was really the nail on the coffin. did Bentley have other ways to enter that door? absolutely. so, what the fuck? why did i come back for a good Sly game 8 years later and receive a game where you have to shake your controller to have Carmelita shake her ass? why did they have the guards’ eyes pop like that? why did no one stop them? and it isn’t just Carmelita. it’s Penelope too. god forbid we have a female character who doesn’t have a waist smaller than my finger, and a voluptuous physique. why was the redesign so drastic? the story stuff is also nonsensical. why did she leave? wasn’t she happy with Bentley? i watched her speech about turning on the gang about a thousand times and it still doesn’t make any sense. like, i literally don’t understand. what was her motive? and why reverse her story of overcoming the Black Baron persona and the connotations of a meek woman hiding behind a man’s disguise? why repeat it, shamelessly? do the guys at Sanzaru only know women who have recently broken up? why does Carmelita, Penelope and Ms Decibel all go through break-ups during the game? why does Penelope go against Bentley before they even break up? why waste the opportunity to introduce a new, well-written villain and use it to repeat something already done? why???? no woman is safe from Sanzaru because Ms Decibel... boy, did i feel bad for her. apart from continuously reminding us that she’s haha fat!! she’s also presented as a blind lovefool. love? what a silly concept only women believe in! Ms Decibel had a crush on Le Paradox (for some reason i can’t even fathom) and for that she must pay by being utterly humiliated. and what do ALL women do when a guy breaks up with them? they get so angry! yikes, stay clear guys! ....why does Sanzaru hate female characters? i’m genuinely curious. i mean, what forced them to depict women like this? i’m sorry, i can’t take much more of this.

Ending: and how do you end a disappointment that came 8 years late and didn’t even have a sequel guaranteed? yeap, you guessed it! a cliffhanger. but not just any cliffhanger - a total fuck you to anyone and everyone. with a single move Sanzaru instantly screwed over the franchise. the fans, the creators, the characters, anyone looking to continue the series. everyone. WHY would you trap the protagonist in the past? WHY? did you feel defensive about something that wasn’t even yours and went ‘well you can continue the series but the sequel will have to do with time travel’. why did you think it was a good idea? how does it even slightly resemble a good ending? someone fill me in please. because i don’t think i’m being unreasonable, i’m just telling it how it is.

Conclusion:

i did it. i fucking wrote it in all its motherfucking glory. the idiots at Sanzaru could’ve given us an amazing game but instead of working on how to make it better or including extra levels, they wasted their time on deciding what killable baby animal to include in each hub or what the backstory for each treasure should be. how fucking distasteful. and to think i’m an idiot myself for trying to force myself to like it because i was so in denial about how bad it was. i’ve just outlined everything wrong with that cursed game. i’m exhausted.

King of Prism Road to Shiny Seven Stars event 4 translation

Trouble! Go Wild! JOKER JOKER!

Since this is the fourth event in the Road to SSS series, you may want to read the previous ones if you haven’t yet:

Translator’s notes: SO. MUCH. HAPPENS. IN. THIS. EVENT. I forgot how huge it was. So first of all, this was Joji’s debut event at the time. (By that I mean, the first event he appeared in after he became playable on Prism Rush.) But not only that, this event gave The Shuffle real dialogue on Prism Rush for the first time and featured Ace in his first non behind the scenes role A-N-Y-W-H-E-R-E (as far as I know). I also feel like this event was when Alexander first became... a good guy? By that I mean like... I think it was first time he was shown as having any other motivation besides blind revenge. But despite this being billed as a Joji/Alec event, pretty much everyone has character development in this event. It even furthers the Shin/Louis plot (See: Louis’ card story for more) and it even has a HUGE tangent about Hiro’s backstory. (This part I translated previously so if you feel like you may have already read it, you probably have. Again that’s why the images are slightly smaller for only that part.) But anyway. Let’s dive in.

Alexander: HuuuAAAAH....!!

(The street duo tournament.... There’s no way I can let myself lose at a tournament representing the street! I have to win no matter what! Kazuki Nishina, just keep sitting pretty! I’ll be coming for you soon!)

Jin: Alexander Yamato... You sure seem fired up.

Alexander: ...Hmph. You, huh.

Jin: It’s good that you have the drive for competition. But aren’t you forgetting about the most important thing, your partner?

Alexander: ...............

I.. I won’t lose, even if I have to enter alone--

Jin: Alexander. That was not what I was asking. Have you decided on your partner, or not? “I can’t win with Louis Kisaragi. We’re too different. I’ll find my own partner that will guarantee the win” .... Those were your own words. So don’t tell me you have forgotten.

Alexander: Gah.....!

Jin: Schwarz Rose is owed much compensation for representing such a low life like you...

Alexander: ........

Jin: Hmph. You have gotten awfully quiet all of a sudden. Well listen up. You think you have already won when don’t even have the basic credentials to enter. At this rate you’ve already lost before the tournament has even began. I won’t be overlooking this insubordination.

You WILL find a partner within the next few days and you WILL bring back that title for Schwarz Rose!

This is an order. Surely even you are smart enough to understand that you have no choice?

Jin: Heh heh. If you don’t like the heat then you can just get out of the kitchen. But if that’s how you want to do things, then the security you have here is gone.

Shin: First Kouji-san paired with Minato-san, and now Yukinojo-san and Kakeru-san are a pair too. Everyone is slowly beginning to prepare for the duo tournament. (Louis asked me to be his partner too, but... We’re from different organizations, so I don’t even know if that’s possible.... !?)

Kakeru: Oh what’s this? Shin-chawan are you spacing out on us?

Shin: ...Aaah! I’m sorry! I was just thinking about the duo tournament...

Yukinojo: You’re still in the midst of figuring out who to pair with, aren’t you Shin?

Shin: Uh... um... ummm...

Kakeru: Oh? It sounds like you already have someone in mind?

Shin: (What should I do... I guess it’s not a good idea to tell them about my conversation with Louis...? I have done a few jobs with Louis before, so I think the others have gotten to know him a little.)

Yukinojo: Yes. It’s hard to narrow it down to one sentence, but thanks to Kakeru I was able to... open the door to a whole new world.

Alexander: (... Gah. Everywhere I look, nothing but wussies. There’s no one here worthy of being my partner... Huh? Someone’s still practicing at this hour?)

Louis: ......

Alexander: That’s... Louis Kisaragi.... (He’s not exactly street, but I have to admit he does have a lot of potential. I guess at the rate things have been going, he may be my only option.)

Louis: Hey. What is it?

Alexander: GAH!

(Wha… What just happened?! It was like everything turned all sparkly for a sec.)

Louis: Alec-kun? What’s wrong?

Alexander: You’ve got to be kidding. Of all the things to say...

Taiga: Wha...!?

Kazuki: Oh come on! I think we’re all in the mood to get out some energy.

Taiga: Well... Well dancing with you is one thing, but THIS jerk...

Alexander: HAH! I have no reason to pal around with you two!

Kazuki: ….I’m not saying we all need to get along. I think we should be able to dance in our own way, however we like. With freedom! We can use each other’s energy as fuel for our own dance. Besides, it’s more fun with a crowd, and before we know it all of our worries will all be danced away… right?

Alexander: ..........

Taiga: (Kazuki-san.... His voice and expression is completely normal.... But it seems like there’s something on his mind?)

Kazuki-san, I’m in!

Kazuki: Glad to hear it! Thanks Taiga!

Alexander: ….Hmph. Guess I have no choice. I’ll show you what real dancing looks like.

Kazuki: Well alright then, let’s get to it! Music… start!

Taiga: (Woah... Kazuki-san is really going full force..!)

Alexander: (You know, those two might be worth considering… for the street-style tourna….)

Kouji: Eheh. It looks like they’re having a great time. You can feel the passion radiating from their dancing even from all the way over here.

Hiro: ............. Street-style battles.... huh.... Haha, this place is nostalgic, isn’t it?

Kouji: Oh yeah. The first time you ever danced together with Kazuki was here wasn’t it? This place serves as a memento of your battle with him...

Hiro: A memento, huh.... it’s not exactly of a good memory though.....

Kouji: But it’s because we’ve had that history that the three of us were able to come together in the first place.

Hiro: Kouji....

Kouji: No matter who you were in the past, I believe in who you are now. Surely by now I have come to know at least a little about who you truly are, and how much prism shows mean to you...

Hiro: ............

It’s more than just a little.

“No matter who I was in the past”... huh...

You know.... just hearing you say that, Kouji, makes me like my past self just a little bit more.

Kouji ....Hey, Hiro.

Hiro: What?

Kouji: When we were at lunch together, Kazuki looked like he wanted to talk to you about something.... are you avoiding him on purpose?

Hiro: ..........

Kouji: And I have one more question. Just now you felt something stir from deep inside your heart while you were just watching Kazuki, Taiga, and Alec dance. Am I wrong?

Hiro: .....Darn. I can’t get anything past you, can I?

Kouji: I had this nagging feeling that maybe you weren’t avoiding Kazuki per se, but actually trying to avert yourself from the street style altogether. Of course, I know you probably have your reasons but...

Hiro: Because I... am the definitive idol, Hiro Hayami! .......Well, that is one reason... but really..... That isn’t all.

Kouji: I figured.

Hiro: .... Kouji, would you mind listening to a story from my past?

Kouji: Of course I don’t mind.

Hiro: Very soon after I was born, I was sent to Kumamoto prefecture... to a church in Amakusa. It was there that the Father and a Sister of the church raised me.

I was very happy there. They loved me very much and treated me as though I was their own child....

I was raised in a loving environment. I was just like everyone else... just like any kid who had a normal family.

....But after a few years passed, the two of them both died in an unexpected accident....

I was moved to a children’s home in Kumamoto.

Child: Hah! If you don’t like it, come at me! You baby!

Young Hiro: Shut your face! I’m not a baby! Take this!

(punching sound effect)

Child: HAHAH! What was that, a fly?! You’re going to have to try a lot harder than that!

Young Hiro: Dammit.... I’m not finished yet!

---At the children’s home there were lots of other kids my age. They had already formed a close bond, and when I suddenly thrown into mix they weren’t very welcoming.

As I got older, I began to let myself get carried away more often. Even in my past I never liked losing, so I was getting into fights every day. It didn’t matter how much bigger or older my opponent was, I wouldn’t quit until I’d won.

I worked really hard to find any way to win. So I would not lose. And I just kept winning, and winning, and winning...

To me, fighting... “battling”.... was... it was just what I had to do in order to prove myself, in order to survive.

...I know things are different now, and the duo tournament is just another show.

But, thinking about battling with other people just reminds me of that time.

Even though I never lost a fight, those weren’t exactly good memories for me.

So, as a result, I guess I have kind of been avoiding Kazuki as well.

I do feel like I need to tell him the truth, like I’m telling you... but...

Kouji: So ....There was a time in your past, when you were like that....

Hiro: You’d never guess, right? To think that me... Hiro Hayami, actually isn’t a definitive idol at all--

Kouji: Hiro Hayami is a member of Over the Rainbow, and everyone’s definitive idol!

Hiro: ...Huh?

Kouji: I think knowing that you have scars and that you’re not perfect only makes your appeal even stronger.

Hiro: .....

Kouji: I will never be like you, Hiro. There is only one “Hiro Hayami” in the entire world, right?

Hiro: Kouji......

Kouji: And of course only I can be me.

Hiro: ...Yeah. Kouji, um, thank you for standing by me all this way--no, thank you for everything always.

Kouji: ...You’re welcome.

Hiro: I’m sorry... The words won’t seem to come out right, but I really am thankful from the bottom of my heart.

Kouji: It’s okay. I know what you mean.

Hiro: I’m so glad. Really... I just... ahaha...

You know, when I think about it, it is true that the past me is what made me into the me I am today. Back in that time, I did whatever it took just to get by.

Kouji: Yeah.

Hiro: ...But, if I bring out that will to fight that I locked up inside myself, I’m afraid something in me could change...

How should I say it... I feel like I could maybe hurt someone again... hurt you... I... I’m not actually that strong. You know that better than anyone, right?

Kouji: Hiro.......

Kazuki: Aahaha here comes another one!

Hiro: ............

Kouji: You have to be the one who makes the decision. After all, you’re the only one who can make that sort of decision for yourself.

Hiro: .....You’re right. Thanks. I’m really glad I could get to talk to you. I feel like a bit of weight has been lifted from my shoulders.

Kouji: I’m glad you talked to me too. No matter what happens, don’t just hold it all in anymore. Promise you’ll talk to me, OK?

Hiro: Okay... I promise.

Kouji: Eheh.

Hiro: Kouji, I... I just want to treasure this time I have with everyone.

Kouji: (All I can do to help is just listen....)

(But I think that by accepting his past self, a small flame was just lit deep within Hiro’s soul. I can feel it.)

Alexander: Wha… What did you just say …!?

Joji: D.. Director!❤ Surely this must be a joke!

Jin: Do I look like I’m joking? You two will form a duo and enter in the tournament just like I said.

Alexander: B… But why him..!

Joji: T… That’s right! The two of us are just about as different as can be!

Jin: …. Was that…. resistance…?

Joji: AaAAAH! N-n-n-n-o of course not!! I would never! Your every wish is my command!★

Alexander: ………..

Jin: Alexander Yamato. You haven’t found a partner yet, have you? Since I just decided Joji will be entering, it’s perfect.

The two of you will be representing Schwarz Rose.

Joji: (I... kind of like the sound of that.) But... but but Alexander-kun doesn’t want to pair with me...

Alexander: DAMN RIGHT I DON’T.

Jin: Did I stutter? I do not repeat myself! This is not a suggestion! This is an order!

Joji: Uug....

Alexander: Dammit...

Jin: (Truth be told, if Alexander paired with Louis they would have the highest chance of winning... But I can’t put Louis through that. I’m unsure of the odds Alexander and Joji have, but...) Alright. I’ll be having you perform a duo show as exhibition for me.

Joji: Say whaaa!? Right now!?

Alexander. What!?

(And so, the two reluctantly prepared for the duo show ordered by Jin...)

Joji: UuuuGH…. How did this happen. This is just the worst worst WORST thing ever. A street-style duo tournament just sounds like a barrel of pain. And if that wasn’t bad enough, why do I have to pair with this muscle meathead?!

Alexander: Oh shut up. Quit crying. You think I want to pair with you, you barrel of cream puffs. What am I supposed to do with some pheromone squirting, flirting weirdo?! HUH?!

Louis: …………

Eheh. You guys sure get along well.

Alexander: WHAT.

Joji: WHAT?! WHAT?! HOW DO YOU FIGURE THAT?! NO WAAAY!

Louis: I’m sure your duo show… will be a lot of fun.

Everything. Will be OK.

Alexander: Hey, where do you get off saying… Huh?!

Joji: It’s like he just suddenly appeared, said what he wanted to say, and then immediately disappeared again?! AAAHaaaHHRGH! What even was that!? Everyone I meet today is just specifically out to drive me bananas....!

Alexander: ....Hey. Let’s just get this over with, playboy.

Joji: ..... Hmph. I don’t need to hear that from you, muscle meathead.

Jin: .....Oh ho.

Alexander: (I assumed this guy could only do namby-pamby kinda shows but…)

Joji: (…For real? I thought this guy was nothing but muscles up to his brain but…)

Alexander: (……Okay then.)

Joji: (……It’s time.) Well, let’s go it together shall we!

Jin: (They are handling this well for their first time... I guess they are both consistent performers...) Heh heh. Not bad at all. Now you better get to work. You’ll have a lot to do to prepare for the tournament.

Alexander: Hmph.... Looks like I have no choice. I guess I can admit you did OK.

Kingdom Hearts: Review From the Heart

When introduced to the Kingdom Hearts series, it seems like one big fever dream that wasn’t meant to exist. I mean Donald Duck and Cloud Strife in the same universe? Who thought this was ok? However, with the fun gameplay, lovable characters, complex story and amazing soundtrack, Kingdom Hearts ends up being an unforgettable series.

Sora is a young boy growing up in Destiny Islands. He plans to go to other worlds along with his best friends. As fate would have it, a black portal appears on his home island and he gets blasted into space and other worlds. Forced to survive, he searches for his lost friends across Disney worlds along with Donald and Goofy, who he runs into in Traverse Town.

As they Traverse through Towns, defeating monsters such as the Heartless along the way, flying around in their Gummi Ship, and sealing dark keyholes, they save worlds and lives in a charming and emotional Action/RPG. Disney characters and Final Fantasy characters would be the last crossover you’d expect in a gaming franchise. The reason why this ever happened was extremely coincidental. Back in 2001 Square-Soft (now Square-Enix after merging companies) was in a rut after the box office failure of their Final Fantasy: Spirits Within movie. Around that time Disney was trying to license a Japanese company to make an RPG fighting game. Square needed to create a new franchise to fund the company, but needed characters that could rival the ever popular Mario. Miraculously, Disney had a branch in Japan within the same building that Square worked.

One of the creators of Square, Shinji Hashimoto ran into a Disney executive in an elevator and jokingly began to consider what it would be like if they created a crossover between the two brands.

Tetsuya Nomura stumbled upon executives who were discussing the crossover, and excitedly offered to help create it. It all began from there. The Disney company welcomed the idea and gave Nomura the greenlight to work with little limitations to the Copyrights. Development for the first Kingdom Hearts game had commenced.

Originally Disney wanted to star Donald as the main protagonist, while Square had hoped for Mickey Mouse to be playable. Of course, Disney wouldn’t subject their most famous property to kill things in an action game (just yet), but Tetsuya Nomura felt that an original, human character would help connect the Disney and Final Fantasy franchises.

Thus, you play through Kingdom Hearts as Sora, a kind hearted boy that is always up for helping people that he comes across. With Sora as a kind outsider who just wants to visit new worlds, explore what is out there, and find friends, the player can have a strong connection with him and strong feeling for the story that is taking place. Development for the game took quite a long time -for early 2000s games at least- but it shows in the final product.

Music was written by the amazing Yoko Shimomura, who has created outstanding soundtracks for countless games across history, but the Kingdom Hearts series has to be the most shining example out of them all. Booting up the PS2/PS3/PS4 (depends on your age really) and hearing Dearly Beloved play whenever you get back to playing is the most serene feeling.

Most games title screens hype you up but Kingdom Hearts always reminds you of how emotional the story is, and the connections that you have to its characters.

The English localization used many of the original Disney voice actors for the characters that appeared in the game’s worlds. The visuals and graphics were also great for the time it was created, especially for Kingdom Hearts 2.

As an Action RPG the fighting system works very well, even if not so much in Kingdom Hearts 1, Kingdom Hearts 2 has some of the best Action/RPG gameplay of all time. Depending on the difficulty you choose at the start, it always ends up being a fun, challenging experience. Battles move quickly and entertainingly as you swing your blade, cast useful magic or use plenty of items to demolish the Heartless. The skill level is very open to all types of people whether you’re a button masher or a skilled strategist, and is equally fun either way. This especially shines in the creative and immersive boss fights that really make the game’s battle system.

As you fight through Disney worlds and their villians, saving Disney characters from Heartless along the way, it weaves together deep and touching interactions between Sora, Final Fantasy characters, and the many classic Disney films we have all enjoyed as kids. Back then, after finally finishing Kingdom Hearts 1, my parents had me take a break from playing games. I was alright with that, Kingdom Hearts 1 was an alright first game with slightly clunky controls.

But the day after, I was talking about Kingdom Hearts with elementary friends. Over next week, the game’s soundtrack was stuck in my head. I had to get my hands on Kingdom Hearts 2. I just felt so emotionally attached to it. The way Sora helped so many people, and touched so many hearts. The hilarious interactions he would have with Disney and Final Fantasy characters. The sheer will that he had to make sure that all his friends were saved in the end. It inspired me, and still inspires me to this day. To have the will to make sure that you give positivity to your friends whenever you can. It’s affected my optimistic outlook on life, the way I interact with my friends, just my whole life in general.

This series really just pulls your heartstrings (pun intended) in a way never really seen before in video games. With the impending release of Kingdom Hearts 3, I have never been more excited in my life. Excited to get back with Sora, Donald, and Goofy to save worlds and defeat the Heartless. I can’t wait to write more about just how much I love this series and the impact it’s had on my life. Who cares if this is being written for school purposes? I care that more people will get into this series and enjoy it just the way that I did. I highly recommend this series to anyone interested in playing a few Playstation games. Persona 5 Review! (Spoiler Free)

Ok, so I’ve played it twice, I’ve platinumed it, I’ve been through every f*cking rage quit, I died many times right before getting to the safe room, I’ve never seen it coming like a thousand times, and now, I can safely say, I love this game so much.

No joke. Persona 5 was everything I expected and more, much more. It surpassed my expectations in every aspect. And yes, this is gonna be anything but praise, and you can already guess which is going to be my final verdict on this, but still, I have to talk about this game.

So, like in its two predecessors, you play as a nameless protagonist, whom we’ll call Akira Kurusu (‘cause that’s his name in the manga and I like it very much) and who’s been falsely accused and now is under probation in Tokyo, the big city. Here, he’ll be taken under custody by Sojiro Sakura, the owner of the café Leblanc, and he’ll attend to this school with a very particular sense of fashion when it comes to its uniforms, Shujin Academy. Soon enough, Akira will discover that a strange app has been installed into his cellphone without his consent, and despite the many times he tried to delete it, it won’t go away.

From here on out, you can guess what will happen if you’ve played another Persona game before: he’ll discover he can summon creatures from hell itself and that there’s a world inside of the world where shadows live, he’ll come across other people who can summon things as well, and they’ll fight demons and stuff, and at the end, they’ll save the world with the power of friendship because if not, this is definitely not a jrpg. Pretty much the same concept from previous games.

But at the same time is completely different, new and fresh.

Persona 5 revolves around the themes of ’freedom’, and ’being slaved by society’. The topic of corrupt and rotten adults is also brought up many times. And it does it perfectly. From the beginning, you get absorbed by the prejudice they throw upon Akira for being a ‘delinquent’ under probation. You can feel how they speak behind his back, how they look away while he walks past them. You put yourself in his shoes, and you sympathize with his bad luck. That’s a very special moment for the player and the protagonist, for it hadn’t happened in previous Personas: this is the very first Persona game in which the main character has the heaviest story pre-game and you feel it. And with ‘heavy’ I mean, seen, clear, present, because yes, the P3 Protagonist had a very sad past, but the game barely touched upon the death of his/her parents, and regarding Yu Narukami… well… yeah, he comes from the city and… yeah, that’s it.

Akira is a character already stablished, the responses you can choose for him have a tendency to seem rebellious, the way he smirks, taunts his enemies and acts proudly of himself… He is, in every way, a character on his own, and not a chance a representation of what the player want him to be. And that’s GREAT!

And not just him. The friends you come across in this path – The Phantom Thieves – may all seem a copycat of previous characters from previous games, but there’s always something that make them unique and original. The way Ryuji speaks and stands against everyone; Ann’s ideals of becoming an inspiration and her passionate love and care for her friend Shiho; Makoto’s concern about her sister and her own future and the pigeon-hole that chained her down for so many years; Futaba’s case of agoraphobia, with her tearful fears and her own demons; Yusuke’s hidden past shaped in a painting and his eccentric ideas; Haru’s heavy burden in following her father’s footsteps while at the same time realizing what she wants for herself; Akechi’s intrusive appearances, with a sad motive and a real self-centered issue; Morgana’s pursuit for his own past, and his devotion for the team. Yes, we already had that best friend who follows women in swimsuits (and actually buys a swimsuit for them cof cof Yosuke I’m looking at you cof cof), we already had the genius detective, the rich heiress to a big enterprise, the talking animal (stop it, Teddie, this is un-bear-able), the popular girl… but they all bring something new to the table. They’re all relatable at some point, and it’s hard to choose a favorite, for they all make you want to be part of that group of friends.

The story is so well thought that it makes me want to cry tears of joy. The main concept is to change the hearts of corrupt people: a sexual assaulter, an artist who plagiarizes his pupil’s work, a mafia leader… you get the idea. The Phantom Thieves risk their lives by entering Palaces, these people’s manifestation of their distorted desires, and they steal their 'treasure’ – in other words, they take away from the villain’s cognition that specific thing that made them corrupt in the first place. It can be a memento from their childhoods, it can be a very naïve object that, with time, created in them this sinful desire to abuse of others with their power. F*ck these guys, really.

And yeah, one thing leads to another… and… there’s like a wheel thing, things that happened at the beginning have repercussion later down the line… and… if I speak a little more I’ll be banned by Atlus 'cause spoilers. But, let me just say that if you believe that Persona 4’s story was clever and surprising, trust me, your jaw will fall to the floor many, maaaaany times in Persona 5. Like, really. You’ll envy these kids’ minds. You’ll never see it co- sorry, it just never gets old.

The gameplay remains true to Persona roots, and brings back the Shadow Negotiation, a mechanic that hadn’t been present since the Persona 2 duology. Before, you gained Personas at the end of the battle thanks to cards shufflin’ (the Shuffle Time Oh My God), but now, it’s up to you to convince the shadows you fight against to join your cause. The Velvet Room is also back, with a very grave-voiced Igor (and Oh, I wanna comment on this, but I can’t), and with two new assistants: Caroline and Justine, the twin wardens. You’ll be able to fuse Personas, just like in old times, but in this occasion you’ll have to decapitate the Personas you want to fuse to create a new one. Nice! There’s also an electric chair, a cell for lockdown and a hanging spot! Cute! All of these things bring new mechanics to the Velvet Room, that you’ll be taking advantage of. There are over 200 Personas to create, and there are some new ones, but don’t worry, we’ll be seeing the same old faces again (hee, hoo, Jack Frost is there too!).

As always, the Social Lin- pardon me, the ’confidants’ (f*ck it, they’re still Social Links, don’t bother me), will enchant the player and take your heart, no pun intended. Aside from fighting darkness itself inside the Palaces (which you should finish as fast as possible), you’ll be spending time with your party members and people from school and from around the city. It’s always good to see Akira interacting with his peers, but it was refreshing for me to see him with adults: in a society in which adults are all rotten and only think about themselves, he comes across some grown-ups that are worthy, that are still clean, and this goes to show that not all of the adults are corrupt, and not all of the teenagers are stupid and immature.

Akira grows close to the people around him, and you can sense his affection and theirs. There’s a big change as to how they regard our favorite delinquent: they slowly realize that he’s not a troublemaker as they made them believe, that he’s actually a noble fighter, and that he’s also worth fighting for. All their love, all their support, is seen and felt during the course of the game, and even more during the final hours. You’ll be grateful to have been close to all these people (I fully recommend to do a playthrough with all the Social Links maximized, it’ll give you, apart from a sense of satisfaction, the whole picture of what I’m talking about).

Social Links are now useful to the actual gameplay. Not only the party members learn new skills as in Persona 4 and passive skills as in Persona 3, but also the confidants outside of the party will give you perks and bonuses during the fights. For example, Mishima’s Social Link (Arcana Moon) will give you extra experience points for those playable characters that are on the reserves (you know, the ones you don’t like and don’t use), so now all of your characters level up at the same time, not just the four you choose. And it’s helpful as hell, believe me. Another Social Link, Hifumi Togo’s (Arcana Star), lets you exchange the characters in battle for those who are on the reserves as well, so in a middle of a boss, if a character is low on hp or sp, you can change them for one who is fresh and ready to fight. And so on. That’s why it is advisable to maximize as many Social Links as you can (but don’t forget to boost your social stats from time to time!).

So, the story is great, the gameplay is addictive… and the music is downright REBELLIOUS. It’s so good that it makes you wanna put on a mask and go out to reform society in a costume. There are songs that you’ll never see – alright, I’ll stop. It’s just… I love 'Last Surprise’ so much. And 'Rivers in the Desert’. And 'With the Stars and Us’, especially the piano version, my goodness, is that a tear in my eye…?

At the end of the game, I found myself whispering how good it was. It was beautiful, and I cried, although it’s not a sad story. I cried because of how good, how joyful it was, because of how many laughs it gave me; I cried because it conveyed many feelings, it made me feel rage, sadness, pity, happiness, rage again, betrayal, surprise… I was amazed by how clever the story went, by how well implemented each mechanic was. I really don’t know how Atlus can top this game, but I’m sure they will, and Persona 5 won’t be the 'last surprise’, I hope.

I really am glad that this game exists. I waited for it not so much, because I entered the Persona world (and I’ve been sucked into it forever now) last year, but still, a few months of delay felt like an eternity, and by the end of March, I was yearning for this to finally be released.

I do have one complaint. Tiny. I really wished there were more easter eggs and references to past Persona games. I know you can see Rise’s poster, and also Kanami’s (which makes, unfortunately, Persona 4 Dancing All Night canon), and that they mention the other 'ace detective’, referring to Naoto Shirogane. I’ve read but not found that they also mention another detective with red sunglasses, making an allusion to Katsuya Suou, older brother of Tatsuya from Persona 2. But still, I was waiting for that trip to Inaba, or to Tatsumi Port Island, or to come across at least Yu Narukami. Something… more. But I guess we’ll see Akira interacting with previous wild card wielders in the not so far away future (yeah, you guessed it, most probably Persona 5 Arena is being developed right now). I just wished they put something more obvious into the game.

But that’s it. I want Atlus to keep on creating games, to keep on surprising me. If you’re a fan of the series, this game will blow your mind, because it brings everything from past games and make it better. If you’re new to the series, this game will blow your mind as well, but you’ll have a difficult time adjusting to the previous ones, if you ever wish to play them (I recommend it though, even Persona 2 Innocent Sin). All in all, it’s an excellent, EXCELLENT, jrpg, and everything we’ve been waiting for.

Persona 5 doesn’t disappoint.
