Top Supermarket Chains Condemned for Ending COVID-19 Emergency Pay Even As Grocery Worker Deaths Increase
In Letter to 49 Supermarket CEOs, America’s Largest Food & Retail Union Urges Walmart, Costco, Whole Foods, and others to Immediately Extend COVID-19 so-called Hazard Pay For Frontline Grocery Workers
Group Also Releases New Estimate: At Least 65 Grocery Workers Have Died, and 9,810 Have Been Infected or Exposed in COVID-19 Pandemic
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) International Union, America’s largest food and retail union with 1.3 million members, sent a letter to 49 CEOs of top U.S. supermarket chains – including Walmart, Costco, Whole Foods and many others – condemning them for a failure to extend emergency pay and protections for grocery workers who are working on the frontlines of the coronavirus outbreak.
In the letter, UFCW International President Marc Perrone urged them to reverse the decision to end so-called hazard pay for their employees, and to publicly recognize that the health risks posed by the COVID-19 pandemic continue to cost lives all across the country. In fact, new internal UFCW estimates show that at least 65 grocery workers have died, and at least 9,810 have been infected or exposed to the deadly virus.
In the letter, UFCW called for these CEOs, most of whom continue to work from home even as their workers face dangerous conditions, to do what is right and immediately extend hazard pay until the risk of the virus has abated.
Today’s letter was sent directly to the CEOs of top supermarket chains across the country, including John Furner (Walmart Supercenters), Dan Bane (Trader Joe’s), John Mackey (Whole Foods), Craig Jelinek (Costco), Kathryn McLay (Sam’s Club), Todd Jones (Publix), and many others. Excerpts of the letter are included below:
“Millions of American grocery workers have been rightfully called essential by our nation’s elected leaders. Given the daily risks faced, these workers deserve critical protections, benefits, and a higher wage for as long as this public health crisis endures. That your companies are even considering cutting the pay of these frontline workers, while you experience record sales, is shocking in its indifference.
“Workers are still dying, including many of your own frontline employees. Every one of your grocery workers are still being asked to risk exposure to this virus and work in dangerous conditions that require them to wear protective equipment on the job. You are suggesting that frontline workers should work for less because the threat has diminished even as you and your entire executive teams continue to work from home.
“If you truly believe that the threat of COVID-19 has passed for your workers, then you should be willing to admit this publicly. Until that day comes, you have a responsibility to provide your workers with essential protections and benefits, including so-called hero/appreciation/hazard pay, until this terrible threat has passed.
“For the sake of these workers, our families, and our nation’s food supply, we ask you to remember your responsibility to ensure that these workers are receiving the premium pay that they have rightfully earned by facing the very risks that so many Americans—including all of you—have been lucky enough to avoid.”

Build-Outs Of Summer: Tenfold Coffee Company In Houston, TX
Though Austin is the easy answer to “best coffee scene in Texas,” Houston has quietly been very, very good for some time now. This is due, in part, to the fact that it is a coffee scene that largely keeps to itself; you won’t find cafes from Dallas, Austin, or San Antonio trying to make moves inside H-town, nor will you find Houston cafes looking to expand across city lines either. But don’t let the city’s insular nature fool you, Houston is home to a handful of cafes that would excel just about anywhere in the United States but nonetheless feel the most at home right where they are.
Adding to the menagerie that is the coffee scene in Texas’s largest city is a brand new outfit, Tenfold Coffee Company. After spending well over a decade as a coffee professional in Seattle and Melbourne, owner Jacob Ibarra opted to head down south and break ground on a coffee company of his own. Building off his time in big name coffee markets, Ibarra states his goal is to increase coffee education and accessibility in ways that haven’t yet been done in Houston. This will come via a completely refinished 3,000-square-foot warehouse expected to open some time in September. To learn more about Tenfold Coffee, we spoke with Jacob Ibarra digitally.

For those who aren’t familiar, will you tell us about your company?
At the heart of it all, what we are trying to do is build better supply chains. We want to be advocates and great partners for the producers we step into relationships with, but believe to make it sustainable and profitable for all involved there has to be some strategy behind it. Practically, we understand that if we want the good we hope to do to be long lasting and profitable we need the consuming side to buy in. Thus, as our first step we are building a cafe/roastery that is more akin to a craft brewery. In Houston, there are just a few who readily invite people into the craft of coffee making and we believe no one has stepped into education and making coffee accessible like we plan. The hope is that with all this we begin to build an audience and customer base that is committed to the craft and genuinely curious about coffee at large. From here we hope this helps us take them on a coffee journey that leads to Tenfold creating better supply chains and more hopeful producer relationships.
Can you tell us a bit about the new space?
Our warehouse is within a three building development in a great, inner-city Houston neighborhood, the Heights. Currently there is an existing craft cocktail bar and in construction are a gym and barber shop in another building. We have the third building which is a 3,000-square-foot warehouse that has been ‘”re-skinned”. We will be taking over the interior and plan to finish it in a modern, yet fun way—taking many cues from the many years I spent in the Australian cafe scene. We have lots of natural light—nearly three whole walls—which gives the space warmth and great perspective. Also, we have a side room attached to the main space that is being converted into a lab. The lab and the main cafe/roastery space is attached by a deck, which will have a very clean yet artistic pergola and seating area that welcomes the neighborhood from the street and invites consumers to enjoy the outdoors.
What’s your approach to coffee?
Wow. Big question but as I have been hiring I have been sharing these three words a lot: quality, sustainability, and hospitality. We have named the company Tenfold because we believe it speaks to excellence. We want everything we produce, including those experiences we give a customer, to speak quality. Quality is a leading way we can distinguish ourselves from the rest of the coffee market. Regarding sustainability, I’d say that Houston is generally behind the curve from the cities I have been in over the last 15 years—Seattle and Melbourne. But, I come at it from a procurement perspective and it would clearly be ironic for me to tell farmers to take care of their land and then trash it with improper practices and culture on the consuming side. Thus, we are taking steps to have a sustainable lens in all the we do and am excited to see how we will grow in this. As for hospitality, I have witnessed too many specialty coffee shops forget the notion that we actually exist in the hospitality industry. At the core of it, we are called to be hospitable and if we can do this well, I fully believe we can progress our vision and aims within specialty coffee.
Any machines, coffees, special equipment lined up?
On the main bar we will have a Marco Uber Boiler, two Nuova Simonelli Mythos Two grinders, a Mahlkönig EK43 grinder, Curtis G4 batch brewer, and the new La Marzocco KB90. The lab will have a Uber Boiler, La Marzocco Linea PB, Mythos One, two Baratza Settes, and an Ikawa sample roaster.
How is your project considering sustainability?
As mentioned previously, this is one of the bigger lens we are trying to look through. Also, we are trying to do this quite holistically. We are soon to start the B Corp “Pending” process, which is geared toward early stage businesses. We have a lot of respect for the B Corp community and know it will help shape our business practices. On the roastery/production side, we have picked up some newer technology called a VortX. Via this machine we will reduce our roasting production gas usage by more than half. The VortX uses water to cleanse exhaust from the roaster instead of a traditional natural gas burning afterburner. In the cafe we will heavily promote and incentivize customers to buy and utilize reusable cups. We are in discussion with Huskee and Frank Green to use and sell in the cafe and retail shelves. Both of these products do a tremendous job of blending beauty with function and in the cafe we will discount orders from those customers who utilize a reusable cup. Also, if you buy a reusable cup from our retail shelves we will grant the customer a free cup of coffee with that purchase. The last thing I will mention is that we will be exploring a “Greater Heights” series of merchandise where all proceeds go to a sustainable endeavor at origin and within one of the coffee communities we work with. I am quite close to the Long Miles Project of Burundi, and Ben Carlson is one my investors and strategic leaders at Tenfold. Ben is leading a new 50 year project to plants trees and re-flourish the Kibira National Forest. The Kibira forest is losing trees at an alarming rate and will change the environmental landscape for coffee farmers so dramatically that production might cease to exist in the province. We want to help and thus for the foreseeable future the proceeds from the the Greater Heights series will head to Burundi and the Trees for Kibira project.
What’s your hopeful target opening date/month?
Late September

Yes, Swerdt Design Group was my architect. Fly Wheel Co collaborated on my brand identity and packaging. Vanessa Farris (who is actually also training to be our roaster) is a woodworker and building a number of our larger more communal tables.

Our warehouse is within a three building development in a great, inner-city Houston neighborhood, the Heights. Currently there is an existing craft cocktail bar and in construction are a gym and barber shop in another building. We have the third building which is a 3,000-square-foot warehouse that has been ‘”re-skinned”. We will be taking over the interior and plan to finish it in a modern, yet fun way—taking many cues from the many years I spent in the Australian cafe scene. We have lots of natural light—nearly three whole walls—which gives the space warmth and great perspective. Also, we have a side room attached to the main space that is being converted into a lab. The lab and the main cafe/roastery space is attached by a deck, which will have a very clean yet artistic pergola and seating area that welcomes the neighborhood from the street and invites consumers to enjoy the outdoors.
What’s your approach to coffee?
Wow. Big question but as I have been hiring I have been sharing these three words a lot: quality, sustainability, and hospitality. We have named the company Tenfold because we believe it speaks to excellence. We want everything we produce, including those experiences we give a customer, to speak quality. Quality is a leading way we can distinguish ourselves from the rest of the coffee market. Regarding sustainability, I’d say that Houston is generally behind the curve from the cities I have been in over the last 15 years—Seattle and Melbourne. But, I come at it from a procurement perspective and it would clearly be ironic for me to tell farmers to take care of their land and then trash it with improper practices and culture on the consuming side. Thus, we are taking steps to have a sustainable lens in all the we do and am excited to see how we will grow in this. As for hospitality, I have witnessed too many specialty coffee shops forget the notion that we actually exist in the hospitality industry. At the core of it, we are called to be hospitable and if we can do this well, I fully believe we can progress our vision and aims within specialty coffee.
Any machines, coffees, special equipment lined up?
On the main bar we will have a Marco Uber Boiler, two Nuova Simonelli Mythos Two grinders, a Mahlkönig EK43 grinder, Curtis G4 batch brewer, and the new La Marzocco KB90. The lab will have a Uber Boiler, La Marzocco Linea PB, Mythos One, two Baratza Settes, and an Ikawa sample roaster.
How is your project considering sustainability?
As mentioned previously, this is one of the bigger lens we are trying to look through. Also, we are trying to do this quite holistically. We are soon to start the B Corp “Pending” process, which is geared toward early stage businesses. We have a lot of respect for the B Corp community and know it will help shape our business practices. On the roastery/production side, we have picked up some newer technology called a VortX. Via this machine we will reduce our roasting production gas usage by more than half. The VortX uses water to cleanse exhaust from the roaster instead of a traditional natural gas burning afterburner. In the cafe we will heavily promote and incentivize customers to buy and utilize reusable cups. We are in discussion with Huskee and Frank Green to use and sell in the cafe and retail shelves. Both of these products do a tremendous job of blending beauty with function and in the cafe we will discount orders from those customers who utilize a reusable cup. Also, if you buy a reusable cup from our retail shelves we will grant the customer a free cup of coffee with that purchase. The last thing I will mention is that we will be exploring a “Greater Heights” series of merchandise where all proceeds go to a sustainable endeavor at origin and within one of the coffee communities we work with. I am quite close to the Long Miles Project of Burundi, and Ben Carlson is one my investors and strategic leaders at Tenfold. Ben is leading a new 50 year project to plants trees and re-flourish the Kibira National Forest. The Kibira forest is losing trees at an alarming rate and will change the environmental landscape for coffee farmers so dramatically that production might cease to exist in the province. We want to help and thus for the foreseeable future the proceeds from the the Greater Heights series will head to Burundi and the Trees for Kibira project.

Sunnyvale, CA-based Falkonry says it solves problems with its machine learning (ML) system, which uses multivariate time-series data to discover patterns, recognize conditions, and predict critical operational events.
Machine learning is a kind of artificial intelligence that allows systems using advanced statistical methods, to learn, in the sense of progressively improving performance of a specific task, often by exposing it to examples of data associated with good and bad outcomes.

Long term relationships lead to measured outcomes," Waters said.

Ron Victor is the CEO of Santa Clara, CA-based Iotium, provider of network-as-a-service (NaaS) to enable industry to securely connect legacy onsite systems to cloud-based applications that leverage analytics, machine learning, and predictive analytics applications at scale.
"The cost for every using company to build an IIoT infrastructure is prohibitive," says Victor. "The cost of managing those devices and managing the users is equally prohibitive."
In contrast, Iotium services include a cloud-managed infrastructure for installing patches and a built-in firewall. No VPNs are involved. The port structure is maintained, which simplifies management. Virtual machines are instantiated at the data source and its destination such that no distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack is possible. Containers are isolated, packet arrival is confirmed, and operational technology is isolated from the enterprise network.
"Information technology (IT) and IIoT are different disciplines," Victor said. "Small IT departments tend to understand the need for our expertise better than the larger departments, which tend to persist with the idea that they can build everything themselves. But they soon come around to our point of view."
Arundo Analytics, San Antonio, TX, said its expertise is in "edge state streaming and analytics, rapid cloud deployment of machine learning models, and enterprise-scale models management."
Cody Falcon, vice president of product, Arundo Analytics, said what all it comes down to is a focus on machine learning deployments at scale.
The challenge for data scientists, said Falcon, "Is they can build the algorithms needed for complex machine learning but have little idea how to execute."
That's why, Falcon said, it's important that Arundo is staffed with engineers schooled in the oil & gas industry. "The work of the data scientist has to be infused with domain expertise," said Falcon.
Another issue with models is that while they may work well when introduced, over time they can reflect less and less well the actual oilfield conditions. The fact is, models must be trained and retrained.
Falcon said he's been surprised at the disparities among companies when it comes to how prepared they are to tackle machine learning. "Some of the largest companies are struggling to operationalize machine learning. Smaller companies need services," he said.
Predictive maintenance seems to be the low-hanging fruit when it comes to applications, Falcon said, although a fuller, defined application set will emerge with impact versus feasibility studies uncovering a range of possibilities.
In another learning session, conference participants discussed some of the challenges the oil & gas industry will face as it adopts these new technologies. These challenges include time synchronization, sensor calibration and location, telemetry, application of general standards to oil & gas specifics, interoperability, and contractual language.
"We're moving from Excel-like to Lego-like systems," said Ragu Gandikota, an executive with MindMesh. "In the future it will be seen we've moved from an older tool set to a newer tool set. At the moment, within the oil & gas industry, that transition is ongoing."

Mobile 5G Services to Become Reality for Consumers and Businesses This Year in a Dozen Cities
DALLAS, TX/January 4, 2018 (STL.News) – AT&T* expects to be the first U.S. company to introduce mobile 5G service in a dozen markets by late 2018. The promise of mobile 5G is seemingly endless and we’re moving fast to make that promise a reality.
To reach this ambitious milestone, we’ve taken a different approach to transforming our network. AT&T 5G services will be based on industry standards for 5G. To make this happen, we were one of the key drivers for standards acceleration last year.
Because of that acceleration, 3GPP, the international wireless standards body, completed key elements of 5G new radio (NR) standards last month. With these specifications now available, hardware, chipset and device manufacturers can start development. This allows us to provide mobile 5G services sooner. We’re confident this latest standards milestone will allow us to bring 5G to market faster without compromising its long-term vision.

Taking 5G to the edge
As standards continue to develop, 5G will advance and won’t just be about faster speeds on your phone. It will also mean much lower latency, which will be enhanced by a new range of applications utilizing edge computing.
A quick primer: latency refers to how long it takes for the network to recognize you’ve requested a chunk of data and to start sending you that data. For example, it’s the brief delay between the moment you press play on a streaming video app and the moment the video shows up on your screen.
We expect future 5G technologies will eventually allow future driverless vehicles to make real-time decisions based on information that goes beyond the individual sensors onboard the vehicle itself. Vehicles will be able to “see” around corners, through other vehicles, and at longer distances. This will enable vehicles to quickly make sense of their environment and help guide safe operations on the road.
That’s what we mean about 5G unlocking a new level of experiences beyond just speed.
As great as 5G will be, we know one size doesn’t fit all.
In fact, 5G is just one of the technologies we’re deploying to give our customers network connections that are fast and responsive like never before. Wired or wireless, mobile or fixed, we’ve got it all covered. Other areas we’re working on include:
LTE
In 2017, we turbo-charged our LTE network and deployed advanced features in all of our markets, which greatly enhanced coverage and capacity. We were the first to launch LTE-LAA and expect to launch the technology in at least 2 dozen additional metros this year.
AT&T 5G Evolution
We’ve been hard at work this past year laying the foundation for mobile 5G with the launch of 5G Evolution in 23 major metros; Atlanta; Austin; Boston; Bridgeport, Connecticut; Buffalo, New York; Chicago; Fresno; Greenville, South Carolina; Hartford, Connecticut; Houston; Indianapolis; Los Angeles; Louisville; Memphis; Nashville; New Orleans; Oklahoma City; Pittsburgh; San Antonio; San Diego; San Francisco; Tulsa, Oklahoma and Sacramento, California offering immersive entertainment experiences like augmented and virtual reality while on the go.
While we’re rolling out mobile 5G in 2018, we also plan to continue to enhance our network with 5G Evolution technology in hundreds of additional metro areas. We will give you more options to access our latest wireless network offers by making additional 5G Evolution capable devices available throughout the year.
LTE-M
We also deployed our nationwide low-power wide-area LTE-M network in the U.S. in 2017. Plus, Mexico’s first LTE-M network is now network ready, creating the first North American LTE-M footprint. LTE-M supports large-scale Internet of Things solutions, like smart city services, smart metering, asset tracking, supply chain management, security and alarm monitoring, and personal wearables. It offers extended battery life, lower-cost modules, improved coverage underground and deep inside buildings and carrier-grade security. With these advantages, LTE-M is already spurring innovation such as the AT&T LTE-M Button, and enabling devices to be connected that were not possible before.
Fixed Wireless Internet
In 2017, we brought high-speed internet access to over 440,000 locations across 18 states in mostly rural areas through technologies like Fixed Wireless Internet, as part of the FCC Connect America Fund. In 2018, we plan to reach over 660,000 total locations and 1.1 million locations by the end of 2020 in those 18 states.
As a leader in the development and implementation of Fixed Wireless Internet, we’re laying the foundation for the future of how we’ll bring consumer and business customers faster high-quality internet over a combination of wireless and wired connections, particularly in previously hard to reach locations.
Fixed 5G and AirGig
Last year, we also launched pre-standards 5G fixed wireless trials in Austin, Texas; Waco, Texas; Kalamazoo, Michigan and South Bend, Indiana with residential, small business, and education customers. We also launched 2 Project AirGig trials, our innovative technology offering transport for ultra-fast low latency internet over power lines. One was in Georgia and the other international.
Fiber for Consumers and Businesses
In 2017, we reached more than 7 million locations across 67 metros nationwide where we market our ultra-fast low-latency internet service powered by AT&T Fiber. In 2018, we plan to add 3 million more locations on our path to reach at least 12.5 million locations across at least 82 metro areas by mid-2019. New metros areas where we plan to bring our 100% fiber network include Amarillo, Texas; Beaumont, Texas; Evansville, Indiana; Gainesville, Florida; Panama City, Florida; Springfield, Missouri and Waco, Texas.1

Customer Insights and Discovery [Update #1]
THIS IS WHAT WE THOUGHT...
Ranches would be a great area to target, but we wanted to continue to look at other mosquito prone, open spaces such as municipal parks and golf courses. We needed to learn more about different industries we have been hypothesizing about. What we did was reach out to various people in those industries, some people we were able to get a hold of and others we are still waiting to hear back from and will continue to follow-up with.

“I’ve only done a few outdoor events and typically we use tents. We have had a few events where we’ve bought bug spray for the guests to apply on themselves if it bothers them (usually at the request of the client). If the venue is at a client’s home we try to use those bug repellant candles:keep small open flames in areas that most of the guests won’t go to. I think most people understand that event planners can’t control something like that, but regardless we tend to advise against outdoor events in the summertime. Another thing that plays into that is the heat. Most clients don’t want to be outside anyway, therefore I don’t think overall event planners are so concerned. As far as investments go, it’s mostly based on the client’s budget and what they want to provide, (we can’t dip into money meant for something else just to control the mosquitos). So in terms of mosquito control, the best thing event planners can do is advise clients on methods of mosquito control andThen go from there. Only if the mosquito problem becomes detrimental to the events company will they take care of the mosquito problem without consulting the client, or to no charge.”

Mosquitos in his area are so bad he had to spray repellants because he is not allowed to spray pesticides or anything that kills pests without a license. Has used repellants in the past on 65 acres and it cost him $650 total or $10 an acre. On his own personal property around his house he will spray on this own with a water pressure hose filled with repellant instead. He would be willing to invest in mosquito control as a community, but it is too expensive to do so on his own. There is s $250 minimum charge and then it is $10 more an acre on top of the first 25.

Galen owns several cows and he mentions he’s had a couple die as a result of suffocation from mosquitoes entering their noses. We found a case in Chicago very similar to this. He also mentions the struggle of cows and diseases. If cows free roamed they could easily pass the diseases they become infected with as a result from mosquitoes. However, because cows don’t tend to roam much they poop near the areas they eat and become infected again. He uses deworming medication that is supposed to be a mosquito repellant as well. However, there is no real proof of it functioning. He doesn’t really use pesticides because his land is so big but if he had a low cost effective solution he’d be interested.

What we learned through customer interviews and further research...
The city of Sugarland’s 2010 budget was $87,252 for mosquito spraying and they spent $69,780 of said budget on a one-year contact with Cypress Creek Pest Control, Inc. - This validates that people are willing to spend money on mosquito control. In 2015 the budget was increased to $150,000. We also found their Mosquito Control Agreement and will be able to use it as a point of reference in what the public sector is doing in regards to contacts.
Depending on what we focus on in mosquito control we will have to obtain different types of licenses, Structural or Agricultural. Agricultural - If you are performing mosquito control as a city, county or state employee, you are classified as a Noncommercial Political Subdivision (NCPS), and if you are a contracted business for a city, county, or state, you are classified as Commercial. In both instances, you need an agricultural license in the Public Health Pest Control category. Click here for more information about agricultural licenses. If you are performing mosquito control for hire for any other entity such as a private individual or home owners association (HOA), you are performing nuisance mosquito control and need a structural license in the Pest category.
Most mosquito spraying seasons for cities are April through October and most contracts fall within this time range.
Regarding ranches...
- Texas leads the nation in number of farms and ranches, with 248,800 farms and ranches covering 130.2 million acres.
- Rural lands, including privately owned forest, total 142 million acres, 84% of the state's total land area.
- 12% of Texas' population resides in rural areas.
- 1 of every 7 working Texans (14%) is in an agriculture-related job
- 98.6% of Texas farms and ranches are family farms, partnerships or family-held corporations.
Sugarland, Missouri City, Tomball, and Houston all use Cypress Creek Pest Control on contract for mosquito control. Contracts last anywhere between 1 and 5 fives.
Houston is number 2 for most mosquito invested city in the nation, sandwiched between Dallas (#1) and San Antonio (#3), both are cities we could easily scale into.

Spend minimal time and money on control, but is interested in it. – Who are they? Dr. Elizabeth Anderson-Fletcher What is their role? Honors Supply Chain Professor / Zika Research Specialist / Volunteer Firefighter How is their budget handled? The University pays her to do research on the subjects she is interested in and the university deems worthy of continued research. How do they find new products for work? She does more research on Zika itself and the outbreak that happened in Brazil and how it transferred here to America. The living conditions in Brazil with the amount of still water and sewage is what led to the Zika epidemic. They would have a hard time paying for our services, but are in desperate need of them. If we could win some sort of government grant to take the drone down to Brazil as an effort of goodwill that would be great. How much time do they spend on mosquito control? Dr. Fletcher was spending all of her research time on Zika and how to prevent its spread via mosquitos a year ago. She has not spent as much time on it recently due to a back injury and focusing on recovering and teaching. – Who are they? Art Detranales What is their role? Founder and owner of Mosquito Defense Solutions How is their budget handled? This year took a turn for him. At the time when we spoke to him back in July he shared with us we was not as profitable as the previous year. His most profitable months tend to be February-May. How do they find new products for work? He gained much experience during his 3 year apprenticeship and licensing, and was able to develop a lot of knowledge and the products and brands that work. He receives his product from Bayer, the top in the pesticide industry. Often though he also finds out through the mail since as he grows more suppliers take notice of him. How much time do they spend on mosquito control? That's their whole business. Focuses more on installing misting systems rather than fogging. He doesn’t really like the hassle of it and since he tries to cover all of Houston as his market, he doesn’t find fogging worth certain long distances. Another issue he brought up with that is how much time he spends traveling home to home. He lacks time and that's one area where feels who could save time and money. – Who are they? Clark Neumann What is their role? Founder of Radicle. Involved in the agriculture industry, worked this past summer with a quinoa farm. Insights? “I don’t believe there is much focus on mosquitoes within the agriculture industry. There are other pests farmers tend to be more concerned with around their crops. There is a large amount of money that goes into pesticides, so the value you would bring is the environmentally friendly aspect, that would bring a lot of value to them if you could eradicate more than just mosquitoes. Farms already tend to make small margins so a focus on mosquitoes may not be a priority. Maybe ranchers might be more concerned with mosquitoes because of the effect they might have on livestock ” – Who are they? Galen Duty What is their role? What we learned?
We learned about the three year certification process we will have to go through in order to legally kill mosquitos. A lot of ranchers are not currently spending money on mitigating mosquitos, but do have an issue with them and would be willing to spend money on eliminating them if it was economical. We need to continue to learn more about their attitudes towards mosquito control and figure out how we can provide superior value to them so they will be willing to spend their money on our product.
