You make some very compelling arguments and I'd have to agree. 👍
Why I love the SPN finale so much
There are exactly 4 possible ways the show could have ended for our boys.
a) Both Sam and Dean live
b) Both Winchesters die together
c) Sam dies
d) Dean dies
So why do I think d) was the best possible outcome? Lets have a look at the different scenarios.
a) Both Sam and Dean live
While it would have been nice, I dont think it would have really concluded the show. "There will be peace when you are done." Well, on earth they would never have been truly done. There would always have been another horror lurking just around the corner, even if it was just a Monster of the Week. To find true peace, I think the boys had to enter heaven. And we actually had a bit of the they were done and lived happily on earth scenario in that domestic life openening of the finale. For the boys to live would just have meant more of the same, seasoned with hurts and horrors and a sprinkle of pain on top.
b) Both Winchesters die together
I wouldn't have minded that. It sure would have made for a tragic ending. In fact, that was what I kind of was hoping for, at least I imagined that this would be how the finale would go. Both boys going down swinging, blaze of glory style, preferably dying hand in hand, saying something like "Good night Sammy" or "See you on the other side, Dean". But in retrospect I see that this would have robbed us of their 7 Minute good bye scene. Of all the things Dean needed to say to Sam because he was saying good bye for quite a while. Of Sam being devastated and breaking down with his dead brother in his arms. There would have been no need for love confessions and "I must have stood outside your dorm for hours" and "When it came down to it it has always been you ... and me". Because they just could have picked up their normal conversation on the other side.
c) Sam dies
Dean would have comitted suicide right after burning Sams corpse. Jensen said so, and regarding Deans feelings and intentions, Jensens words are as good as canon to me.
I wouldnt have minded the tragedy of that, but in that case it really would have had an undertone of suicide ideation, which enough people scream about Dean's death as it is. (And which it really, really wasnt!)
c) Dean dies
Did I cry my eyes out? Yes. But the show I love is a drama show. Otherwise I`d choose a feelgood comedy show.
I wouldnt have minded for Sam to follow Dean soon after, to be honest. Maybe by being extra careless on hunts. But in keeping fighting, living through the grieve and pain day by day and coming out strong enough on the other side to actually have a kid and give him a stable, loving home, the message of the finale was actually so powerful. Opposite of glorifying suicide, it said "hold on, stay strong, there is a light at the end of all this trauma and horror and darkness you currently walk through".
The best part about the finale is, though, that it did not end there. Supernatural DID. NOT. END. WITH. DEAN'S. DEATH!!!
SUPERNATURAL ENDED ON A BRIDGE!!!!
I would have hated it, if the end of the show would have been the brothers seperated. But they weren`t. The show literally ended with the boys arm in arm, looking out over a peaceful valley in a heaven better than the one they knew from before.
There was peace and they were done. Together.

See no one’s dead- what nail???
Today, Sam and Jack marathon the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, as Jack had not yet seen them. They love the series and decide to listen to the soundtrack the rest of the night.

yes, people are still divided over the supernatural finale, but realistically this is an (originally) gothic horror show about two brothers who are psychotically, irrationally, erotically codependent on each other – how else could it ever have ended except with one brother dead in the arms of the other, their foreheads pressed together, their lips just close enough to blur the line between Normalcy and Not in a last tantalising moment of, "but maybe"

Remember to resfresh your tetanus shots, guys! Otherwise the same fate might befall you.

I know I originally posted way back that I was disappointed in how it ended, when I first finally saw the series finale. I acknowledge I said it. A part of me still feels like it could've been "better".
However... and this is a big however...
This ending? Was beautiful. Rich. Showing the ties between the brothers that were so profound that even back in season... I can't even remember... that it was noted they were wildly codependent. It was noted they were soulmates.
Their actions the entire series showed that. Crowley noticed it, even. Rowena too.
Once Sam was snapped back into the family business all the way back in Season 1, episode 1, he couldn't leave. Because Dean needed him.
Losing Sam would've sent Dean into a spiral, one where his remaining life would've been rough and bitter. Losing Dean freed Sam to go back to the "ordinary" life. To have a relationship, a child, marriage, a life.
Because he knew, somehow, at the end, he would be reunited.
And he was.
Dean knew it too.
The show began with the two brothers and ended with the two brothers.
Supernatural left a massive impact on people, culturally and otherwise.
Here's to 15 years of Supernatural.
It wasn’t the ending that was planned, but I truly believe it was the ending that was meant to be.
It was heartbreaking, and poignant, and beautiful.
Jared and Jensen have said that they like to think there were five years between the time they killed Chuck and the pie festival. I like to think that too. Sam and Dean, living the life they had always secretly wished for but never dared believed they would have. Years spent in the bunker, taking the occasional hunt, enjoying life with all her ups and downs and peaceful in-betweens.
The very best part of our show is found in the love Sam and Dean have for each other. It’s so rare to find a show that doesn’t insist that romantic love is the only important way you can love—that it should be everyone’s end all and be all. But Supernatural showed us something different. That a love can be intense, profound, life-affirming, beautiful and not be romantic. In those five years, Sam and Dean enveloped each other in that love and they both thrived.
It was bound to end bloody. We were promised that from the beginning. And I’m glad Dean had those five years first. I’m glad he died as he lived—-fiercely, heroically, full-throttle. He died a hero, doing what he loved, his brother by his side.
The barn scene was perfect in the most heartbreaking of ways. Dean’s entire speech, broken and brave, was poignantly devastating. I will never be able to hear the words “I love you so much, my baby brother, without tearing up. I still live in that barn, with the two of them, watching as Sam’s world crumbles into dust, watching Dean face what’s coming with quiet dignity.
Sam lived. And in doing so, he raised a son He gave Dean Jr the kind of life that Dean had always wished for Sam—a life cocooned in love, a life where the monsters were known but were kept away, a life where Dean Jr could blossom and grow and know beyond anything that his father loved him.
Being that he was named after who Sam believed to be the greatest man that ever lived, I like to think he grew up to do great things as well. But this is not his story.
This is theirs.
And then the show ended on the bridge. The soft way Dean smiled as soon as he sensed his presence. The other half of his soul had been returned to him.
They live there now, together, forever. There’s an endless road and they will travel it together, side by side. Two bodies, one soul, an eternity.
Thank you Supernatural for giving us this ending. Supernatural ended as it began with Sam and Dean. I miss them. I always will.

It would have been so beautifully poetic if Dean had rescued Cas from the empty paralleling Cas rescuing Dean from hell.
