A significant event on our calendar is the annual Inspire Awards, which celebrate individuals who surpass expectations, regardless of any diversity barriers. Among the 27 standout winners, was Themba Cox, who is making waves with his remarkable accomplishments. At just 7 years old, Themba has already outpaced a calculator, becoming the youngest person in the UK to complete all 11 levels of the abacus mental maths curriculum.
youtube
Mastering the abacus mental maths with BYITC Supermaths isn't a walk in the park; it demands unwavering dedication, with students progressing through each level before completion. Typically taking 3 to 4 years, this accomplishment is akin to a miniature PhD for these exceptional young minds.
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic chaos, where traditional classes were disrupted, Themba seized the opportunity to shine. His story is a testament to the power of dedication and innovation in the face of adversity.
But Themba's journey goes beyond mathematics. He's an avid reader, aspiring author, martial artist, and swimmer aiming to reach stage 5 before his 8th birthday. Challenging stereotypes, he's also the first boy nationally to pursue rhythmic gymnastics, all while advocating for awareness of the dangers of secondhand smoke.
Recently, Themba was honored with the Shakuntala Mantri Exceptional Award at the British parliament during the Inspire Awards, recognising his outstanding achievements in abacus mental maths.
Despite the pandemic's disruptions, Themba's dedication never wavered, thanks to BYITC Supermaths' innovative online platform. His story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding us all of the boundless possibilities when passion meets opportunity.

Fantastic Four Vol 1 #280
Sun Jan 03 2021 [01:18 AM] Wack'd: So we open with the police taking Reed's statement on the theft of the Baxter [01:18 AM] Bocaj: I'd love to see the incident report on that [01:18 AM] Wack'd: Reed does mention the building was otherwise unoccupied [01:18 AM] Bocaj: That Answers That [01:19 AM] Wack'd: Everyone knew to get out a few minutes before because they all had supermath [01:19 AM] Bocaj: Pfft [01:20 AM] Wack'd: An elderly Jewish man named Abe breaks through the police barricade to complain at Reed about the small deli he was running out of the lobby [01:21 AM] Wack'd: We know he's Jewish because he ran a deli and he says "oyyy veyyy" and he had a wife that died in "the war" [01:22 AM] Bocaj: He should name the deli the Fantastic Store and dare Reed to do something about it [01:22 AM] Wack'd: How the fuck do you run a deli out of a lobby kiosk anyway? I'm just imagining, like, a Subway [01:23 AM] Wack'd: There's a lot of infrastructure you'd need I can't imagine the lobby of a residential building having [01:23 AM] Wack'd: Anyway Abe is new. He's in this issue and will never be seen again [01:24 AM] Bocaj: Alas [01:24 AM] Wack'd: Anyway the cop that was taking Reed's report calls Abe "garbage" and says there's "no point in trying to be reasonable with your kind" and pins Abe to the wall [01:25 AM] Wack'd: Wyatt tries to get him to back off and the cop calls him "boy" and clubs him [01:26 AM] Wack'd: I would be a lot more impressed with this sudden (unsubtle but still) understanding of the contours of racism if Bryne hadn't also had Wyatt get called all kind of racist shit by the good guys like once per issue [01:27 AM] Wack'd: Anyway Jen starts to pummel the shit out of some officers but Reed tells her to just let herself (and Wyatt and Abe) get carted off to jail so they can deal with this The Right Way. With the Law and whatnot [01:28 AM] Bocaj: Jen: =__= "Just for that, Reed, I'm getting my law license back" Reed: "Aight" [01:29 AM] Wack'd: Did she lose it? Reed explicitly points out she's a lawyer and she's mentioned as being the FF's representation on occasion [01:29 AM] Bocaj: She's not licensed to practice in New York since her license is from California [01:29 AM] Wack'd: I guess she'd have to pass the NY Bar Exam since she moved from CA but she coulda done it offpanel [01:29 AM] Wack'd: Right, yeah [01:29 AM] Bocaj: I know that in Avengers up to where I am she hasn't done that (and in fact considered getting a job as an aerobics instructor??) but I'll concede that off panelling [01:29 AM] Wack'd: (Pssst I don't think Bryne knows that's how law works) [01:29 AM] Bocaj: Hah [01:30 AM] Bocaj: The Soule She Hulk book later has her briefly inconvenienced because while her license for New York is active, her California license has lapsed [01:30 AM] Wack'd: Huh [01:31 AM] Wack'd: So Sue asks "how can anything like this be happening in this day and age" and Reed says "I'm not certain" [01:31 AM] Bocaj: *Cough* [01:31 AM] maxwellelvis: Welcome to the Real World, Richards Family [01:31 AM] Wack'd: So yeah it wasn't Johnny being young and dumb last issue, Bryne genuinely thinks racism (or at least its more overt variants) are just gone [01:32 AM] Wack'd: Maybe Wyatt will call them all out for being dumbfucks later but I doubt it [01:33 AM] Wack'd: So Reed and Johnny head to Avengers Mansion while Sue gets Alicia home. Angry racist mobs are springing up all over NYC [01:35 AM] Wack'd: Reed is worried about Franklin (who is staying over with the Avengers.) Pretty sure this is the first time Franklin is called a mutant rather than just being referred to as having "mutant powers" [01:37 AM] Bocaj: This explains why Franklin was living at Avengers mansion during the unparalleled Marvel comics epic The Saga of Throg [01:37 AM] Wack'd: Back with Jen, Wyatt, and Abe, a bunch of gangsters with Brooklyn accents that make Ben's look natural knock over the armored car they're being transported in, thinking they're saving a fellow goon [01:38 AM] Wack'd: Jen sends Wyatt to take Abe home while she heads to Avengers Mansion so I hope you enjoyed that little plot cul-de-sac [01:38 AM] Bocaj: Yeah it was ok [01:39 AM] Wack'd: wut
Tumblr media
[01:39 AM] Bocaj: oh god this [01:39 AM] Wack'd: I know Sue becomes Malice at some point [01:40 AM] Wack'd: The idea that she is an independent entity and also involved in creating a wave of racism had not been mentioned to me [01:41 AM] Bocaj: The costume make this feel like Byrne's take on a dark phoenix concept [01:41 AM] maxwellelvis: Malice is fond of possessing super heroines, forcing a new look on them, and then that look becomes their status quo for a while after she's finally forced out for no particular reason. [01:41 AM] maxwellelvis: Sue, and then Polaris, to name two. [01:41 AM] Wack'd: Speaking of looks I feel the need to point out that one strip of fabric just above her navel [01:41 AM] Bocaj: Starch [01:41 AM] Wack'd: What is it doing there. Why is it staying up [01:43 AM] Bocaj: Looking again at the Malice costume, the headgear is super ridiculous. It goes beyond ridiculous. It has reached a level where it goes even further beyond [01:43 AM] Bocaj: It is the super saiyan 3 of headgear [01:43 AM] Wack'd: Anyway Malice kicks Jen's ass [01:43 AM] Bocaj: Alas Poor Jen [01:43 AM] maxwellelvis: The peril of being the Strong Guy of a team. [01:43 AM] maxwellelvis: You're the one every new villain beats up. [01:44 AM] Wack'd: Unger appears to Malice to infodump that he has "raised the ancient curse across the length of this city" [01:44 AM] Wack'd: Racism: caused by ancient curses [01:44 AM] Wack'd: You heard it here first [01:44 AM] Bocaj: ....... [01:44 AM] Bocaj: Sure [01:44 AM] Bocaj: That'll fit in with the other causes for prejudice in marvel: communism, sweeps week, capitalism, sentient bacteria [01:44 AM] Wack'd: Sure [01:45 AM] Bocaj: (In fairness the capitalism one is closest without going over) [01:45 AM] maxwellelvis: Or in the case of Mutants, fear of the Other [01:45 AM] maxwellelvis: hey, Marvel hit it on one. [01:45 AM] maxwellelvis: And it's the minority they made up. [01:45 AM] Bocaj: Yeah that makes way more sense than sentient bacteria [01:46 AM] Wack'd: ...I feel like "SUE IS NOW A RACIST SUPERVILLAIN" is a pretty good cliffhanger splash panel but nope we're still truckin
Tumblr media
[01:47 AM] Wack'd: Reed has been analyzing the atoms of racist pamphlets to find out what's up but the atoms are all of unknown origin so he's stumped [01:47 AM] Wack'd: (Reed does not know what carbon is) [01:48 AM] Bocaj: Ha [01:48 AM] Bocaj: Sue: "If there's going to be a guy called Hatemonger than I'm going to say the n word on tv" [01:48 AM] Wack'd: Ah, here's our cliffhanger [01:48 AM] Wack'd: Franklin runs in to tell Reed he had a prophetic dream about Sue murdering Reed [01:48 AM] Wack'd: Jen: "That doesn't match up at allll" [01:49 AM] Wack'd: It's been a while since we had a real good entrant into the "How Horrifying Can You Draw Franklin" Hall of Fame
Tumblr media
[01:50 AM] Bocaj: "They're eating her. And then they're going to eat me. Oh my gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood"

I mean, maybe! The problem is that we’re going to have to start with my biggest pet peeve in all of sci-fi, and that is the word “Dimension”.
I will preface this by saying I am not an expert on the subject by any stretch of the imagination. I am, at best, a layman of physics.
You see, the word “Dimension” has numerous definitions, and the context is the key to understanding what we’re talking about.
We’ll start with the best description we get of Z-Space in the entire Animorphs series: Peter’s discovery of Zero-Space in Book 45.
“We’ve discovered what could be thought of as a whole new dimension, yet not a dimension at all. It’s sort of like … Marco, you’ve studied conic sections, haven’t you? … You know what a cone looks like, right? Well, the surface of a cone is the two-dimensional analogue to the five-dimensional space we inhabit… While the surface of the cone is two dimensional, the surface exists in three dimensions.”
So to start with, we can see that Marco’s father is talking about spatial dimensions. Adding the two surface dimensions to the three internal dimensions isn’t something I’ve seen done before, but it’s similar to how we say Space-Time is 4 dimensional: Space is 3 dimensions, and time (as we know it) is 1 dimensional, and 3+1=4.
“The cone contains a singularity. The place where all lines intersect. The place where you can head out in any direction, or in all directions at once. Where you can move in any direction without moving anywhere at all. We live our lives on just one line on the cone, in a mere four dimensions, including time. We’ve been stuck on the surface of the cone all this time. When we want to go anywhere, we have to travel on the line. But now, imagine someone notices the singularity. A point with no size, no breadth, no extent. The physical representation of nothingness. By itself, it’s nothing. Yet it’s the starting and ending place of everything! A multiplier of real space!”
So here we get to the nature of Z-Space itself. In Peter’s eyes, Z-Space is the end of the cone, a single point, and traveling to that point lets you come out anywhere else on the cone. However, he’s also simplifying things drastically for his kid and wife by compressing space-time down to a 1D feature of the cone, implying… Well, here’s where I have to start conjecturing.
We know that Z-Space is a physical place (book #18). We know ships have to physically travel through it (Book #8, book #18). And we know it’s wonky. It’s a pure white void of marshmallow fluff with varying densities scattered throughout, and these pockets of extra dense whiteness can move and shift. We also know it’s a vacuum, so the density is not matter, but probably exists in the form of pure energy.
The point is, this actual physical description of Z-Space from people who have actually been there doesn’t really fit Peter’s description of it. Peter, obviously, has never been there, so he doesn’t know that there is something inside this Singularity he describes. And yet, we know from Ax and the Yeerks that Peter’s theory, however wrong it sounds, is correct.
So I started digging through a number of possible solutions where Zero-Space is actually the Big Bang or it’s an inside-out wormhole or it’s space outside of the universe or something.  But then I got stuck on the fact Ax sees his friends and himself as 4D blobs when they are floating in book 18, and suddenly it clicked. It all clicked perfectly. What if Peter wasn’t talking about a regular old cone? What if he was was talking about a hypercone? And that’s exciting because we already model the universe as a hypercone. That lead me to Minkowski Space, and guess what I found there?
I found a cone.
Tumblr media
Here, an event (The origin point of the two cones) has coordinates within the hypersurface of the present (which connects all present moments across space, I think?) Anyways, the event propogates along time, and…stuff happens.
I will be honest, I don’t understand half the words used to describe it. But I have a sneaking suspicion that if we use this, then we can say that a ship entering Z-Space escapes from the linear flow of time by accelerating to lightspeed, then moves to travel along the hypersurface of the present to another location before rejoining the time stream. So we could then just say Z-Space is all space disconnected from time, which effectively puts us back at “Z-Space is all space outside the Universe as we know it”.
Mmm. But I’ll have to think about it some more, because this would imply that information (and ships?) emerge at point B at the same time they leave point A, despite experiencing a travel time as they move through the spatial dimensions. I mean, that would explain why Z-Space is a vacuum- it’s normal space with the time turned off- but it doesn’t explain why Z-Space is white, because it should be completely black if all the photons have stopped moving. Unless something else is going on, like you’re smacking into the photons yourself and that’s how you’re seeing them. Or that many photons have filled your eyeballs even though they aren’t moving. Or maybe photons, being timeless, continue to move through this area. And the idea that the travel is instant from an outside observer’s perspective doesn’t feel…right, because it’s implied it would take the Andalites months or years to get a relief fleet to Earth. If departure and arrival times are simultaneous, then what would take them so long? Gathering ships? Gathering supplies? Gathering the political support for a second mission?
The short version is, I don’t know. But there’s a thing here that looks like it might be a promising answer, and I wish I knew more math because then I might understand it.
EDIT: Actually so in spite of my opening, my solution actually does involve the whole “time is the fourth dimension” thing I had previously discounted. And that sucks, because here I was hoping to make something coherent, but really I was just rambling the whole time. I hope you got something useful out of it anyways, even if it’s just ideas for how a fictional FTL device works.
I'm not sure if anyone's said this before, or even if this is a question that needs answering, but I'm pretty sure Z-space is actually the fourth dimension.
I thought time was the fourth dimension?
*laughs the nervous laugh of a person who has never taken a single physics class in 22 years of education*

(Information on the Metavirus)
(The Metavirus that creates Metaroids and grants the Rangers their superpowers is a rapidly evolving, learning computer virus. Each fight gives the Metaroid Commanders more information on how the Rangers fight, but it also gives the Rangers a similar edge. Where a normal person could see a few ways to solve a problem, Tristan, Henry and Caroline's brains operate with what one engineer termed 'supermath.' The metavirus grants them the abilitiy to read all the angles, and pick the best course of action in just a few seconds. Of the three of them, only Tristan really understands the metavirus supermath. Henry and Caroline just accept it as part of their overall skill set. This Supermath is also worked into the programming of the Buddyroids. When a Ranger and a Buddyroid are synced up inside the zord, they can move and think much faster than if one of them was piloting the zord alone. However, the metavirus is a rare thing, and its creators want it back. That's why the Rangers are recalled to the base after completing a mission, and why Commander Blackwell has a team of guards watching Caroline when she pulls off her escape attempts. He doesn't want his team, his family, to be captured. Commander Blackwell's superiors at Crisis Management are also interested in the Metavirus. If they ever get their wish to shut down the Gigabyte team, they intend to experiment on the kids and find out how to produce more Metavirus. Commander Blackwell will not allow that to happen.

Yeah the reason it's usually connected to Int is that original D&D based it's magic on The Dying Earth, where magic is sentient supermath that you have to convince to live in your brain.
Also as a DM you'll sometimes see players do this and it's the worst
I want a RPG where "Intelligence" stat not only affects the maximal amount of your mana or things like that, but also... if the player attempts to use certain tactics or strategies in the combat with a low-Int character, the game wouldn't let them do that and would display a message - "You are smarter than your player character - it would be OOC for your character to act so smart!"
That would be amusing, but I bet it would be infuriating: restricting players to actions they know are suboptimal is usually unfun for them. “Intelligence” as an abstract stat always has felt kinda un-immersive to me; it’s really hard to mechanically model a character much smarter or dumber than the player character in a way that feels natural.
I also think the fact that Int is usually connected to magical ability is a bit odd. Who says wizards have to be smart? Maybe some just have an innate talent, like some kind of magical savant. Or maybe your wizard only knows Fireball, has an attitude problem, and has gotten really good at it!
