Arle Nadja for Smash Bros. 4: We’re going for Spiritual Classics
Behold. Even when there’s chaos and disorder, we’re near the spooky day, and so, it’s time to talk about the Spirit Battles that I plan to bring into Smash Bros. Ultimate!
I did warn you last time we had this kerkuffle, that long texts awaited thee for this instance. You have been warned tremendously. Let us begin the last part!
Número 3: Spirit Battles!
Spirits are these jolly-good .png files that, when equipped, give you power, make you stronger, give you buffs, etc., etc. Puyo Puyo-based Spirits will consist of 11 of those little fellas, with 9 of those having a battle via the (hypothetical) DLC Spirit Board.
1. Carbuncle
Class: Advanced ☆☆
Type: (Support) Neutral
Power: 4200
Team Stock Battle
Vs. Bunny Kirby (Yellow) & Arle
Stage: Windy Hill Zone (Ω)
Music: Area A
Item: Superspicy Curry
Conditions:
Defeat the main fighter to win.
The enemy is easily distracted by items.
Acquired Spirit Stats:
Ability: Mouthful of Curry
Cost: 2
He’s round, hard to hit, and loves curry! Carbuncle, obviously represented by a Bunny Hood-wearing Yellow Kirby. If you get him, you get the Mouthful of Curry ability, which grants you the effects of a Superspicy Curry at the beginning of the match.
2. Amitie
Class: Novice ☆
Type: (Primary) Attack
Power: 1700
Team Stock Battle
Vs. Zelda (Red) & Corrin (Male Light Blue) & Villager (Female Pink)
Stage: Peach’s Castle (Battlefield Form)
Music: Puyo Puyo FUNderworld!
Conditions:
The enemy's side special has increased power.
The enemy favors up specials.
Acquired Spirit Stats:
Power: 960 [ATK 529 DEF 431]
Slots: 2
Can Be Enhanced at Lv. 99.
3. Red Amitie
Class: Ace ☆☆☆
Spirit Stats:
Power: 3158 [ATK 1928 DEF 1230]
Slots: 2
Fire Attack ↑
Amitie’s Spirit Battle has to take place at a magical place! Taking her spot is Zelda, who’s known for having Fire and Wind-based magic, much like our lovely protagonist herself. And joining her are Corrin and Villager mimicking Sig and Raffina! By leveling up, she turns into Red Amitie, but how exactly is a thing we don’t exactly know.
4. Ringo Ando
Class: Ace ☆☆☆
Type: (Support) Grab
Power: 9000
Team Stock Battle
Vs. Robin (Female Red) & Richter (Purple) & Banjo & Kazooie (Dark Brown / Purple) & Dark Samus
Stage: New Donk City
Music: The Puyo Puyo Song - In-Game Version
Conditions:
The enemy’s electric attacks have increased power.
The enemy favors neutral specials.
Reinforcements will appear during the battle.
Acquired Spirit Stats:
Ability: Zap-Floor Immunity
Cost: 2
The red-haired student who’s in this to win. She comes packed with a powerful team in a battle taking place in the only city that resembles the “real world” where Ringo lives. Joining Robin with her thunder attacks is Richter, jumping in as Maguro, the bear himself, Banjo, as Risukuma, and a surprise guest: Ecolo, as Dark Samus! As a reward for such a scientific match, she’ll grant you Zap-Floor Immunity, to fight against electric floors and the like!
5. Ally
Class: Novice ☆
Type: (Support) Grab
Power: 1600
Team Stock Battle
Vs. Daisy (Green) & Arle & Zelda (Red) & Robin (Female Red)
Stage: Yoshi’s Island (Melee) (Battlefield Form)
Music: Ready for Fever Mode!
Conditions:
The enemy can heal by shielding attacks.
Reinforcements will appear during the battle.
Acquired Spirit Stats:
Ability: Critical-Health Defense
Cost: 1
Ally! The lass in green from the mysterious lands brings a whole party of 4 to the fray. Although her battle isn’t that hard, it’s her skill that makes the difference: Critical-Health Defense, which will get you buffed in time when things get hectic!
6. Schezo Wegey
Class: Advanced ☆☆
Type: (Primary) Grab
Power: 4100
Stamina Battle
Vs. Robin (Male Blue)
Stage: Yggdrasil’s Altar
Music: Request from Puyo Puyo
Conditions:
The enemy starts the battle with a Black Hole.
The enemy’s melee weapons and electric attacks have increased power.
The enemy favors neutral specials.
Acquired Spirit Stats:
Power: 1532 [ATK 998 DEF 534]
Slots: 3
Can Be Enhanced at Lv. 99.
7. Cool Schezo
Class: Ace ☆☆☆
Spirit Stats:
Power: 3041 [ATK 1761 DEF 1280]
Slots: 3
Sword Attack ↑
It’s the one who commands the dark magic, Schezo! Seemed kind of obvious for him to be portrayed by Robin himself, in a magical, distant land. His fight makes it seem like he’s hella powerful, so getting him AND getting his Spirit to become Cool Schezo feels even more rewarding. Just look at that pristine white cape of power, so cool!
8. Rulue
Class: Advanced ☆☆
Type: (Support) Grab
Power: 4300
Stamina Battle
Vs. Wii Fit Trainer
Stage: Tortimer Island (hazards off)
Music: NORMAL MODE
Conditions:
The enemy's physical attacks have increased power.
The enemy has increased defense.
The enemy favors grabs and throws.
Acquired Spirit Stats:
Ability: Energy Shot Attack/Resistance ↑
Cost: 2
The lady who kicks into scene takes form into a Puyo SUN-inspired battle! At the shores of the beautiful Tortimer Island, Wii Fit Trainer posing as Rulue will take you on with powerful kicks and twists. The skill you get, which is Energy Shot Attack/Resistance, is a testament to her strength and training against magical arts.
9. Dark Prince
Class: Ace ☆☆☆
Type: (Primary) Shield
Power: 9300
Team Stock Battle
Vs. Ganondorf (Brown) & Bunny Kirby (Yellow)
Stage: Dark Prince Castle (hazards off)
Music: Final of Puyo Puyo
Hazard: Screen Flip
Conditions:
The screen will suddenly flip.
Defeat the main fighter to win.
The enemy starts the fight with a Black Hole.
The enemy favors special attacks.
Acquired Spirit Stats:
Power: 3148 [ATK 1882 DEF 1266]
Slots: 3
The Dark Prince himself, mwah ha ha! To be quite fair, the only character who was able to fit this awesome robe was Ganondorf himself. I know there’s a joke there trying to have Joker take his place but, well, Voice Actor jokes only work when they’re, well... global? For this fight, it’s all about manipulation and trying to outdo your rival to get your hands on that powerhouse of his Spirit.
10. Puyo Puyo
Class: Novice ☆
Type: (Support) Neutral
Power: 1600
Team Stamina Battle
Vs. Team Kirby (Red ×4, Green ×4, Yellow ×4, Blue ×4, Purple ×4)
Stage: Distant Planet (Ω)
Music: Theme of Puyo Puyo
Conditions:
Reinforcements will appear after an enemy is KO'd.
The enemy falls slowly.
Acquired Spirit Stats:
Ability: Instadrop
Cost: 2
Before we move onto the last Spirit, we have to do this... fun Puyo hell! It’s the Puyos, in their... most interesting form. Represented by colored Kirby fighters, these fall slowly into the field and have low energy. When you beat them, you earn the Instadrop ability, kinda like if they gave you the ability to Hard Drop.
11. Doppelganger Arle
Class: Legend ☆☆☆☆
Type: (Primary) Attack
Power: 13500
Stamina Battle
Vs. Arle (Dark Red)
Stage: Dracula’s Castle (Ω)
Music: Dark Arle’s Insanity
Conditions:
Take your strongest team into this no-frills battle.
Acquired Spirit Stats:
Power: 4842 [ATK 2659 DEF 2183]
Slots: 2
Magic Attack ↑
The final battle for all of us is supposed to be against ourselves. Same goes for Arle, who you get to battle into these Spirit Battles as her doppelganger! Or is it the other way around? Defeating this incredibly powerful Spirit will grant you a Spirit that’s either too powerful, or that’s way too powerful.
Número 4: Classic Mode!
Lastly! We journey through her Classic Mode run and all that implies! Discounting the Bonus Stage, this would be her journey through Classic Mode (as envisioned by yours truly)!
Puzzling Magic Fun!
Puzzling Magic Fun! ( パズルの楽しみ旅 , lit. “Puzzle Fun Trip”) is all about exploring the history of puzzle games that are currently represented in Smash Bros. in one way or another, and Arle having some crazy stock battles against all of their protagonists! All stages have music from the Puyo game closest to that release.
STAGE 1
Vs. Yoshi
Stage: Yoshi’s Island (Melee)
Music: Theme of Puyo Puyo
The first fight is against the least alike of the puzzle games: Yoshi’s Cookie, from 1992! Yoshi’s Cookie is a fun title with an interesting sliding mechanic, but it’s far from being similar to Puyo Puyo, yes.
STAGE 2
Vs. Mii Swordfighter
Stage: Super Happy Tree
Music: Area A
Our second fight is against Panel de Pon, from 1995, with Mii Swordfighter cosplaying as Lip! Panel de Pon, localized as Puzzle League, is an interesting match-3 puzzle game where you have all your pieces on the board at all times, and you line up your strategy to let gravity take its course and do crazy chains!
STAGE 3
Vs. Ryu & Ken
Stage: Suzaku Castle
Music: Request from Puyo Puyo
Wait, Ryu and Ken!? Well, wouldn’t you know, they starred in their own puzzle game, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. This 1996 puzzle game mimicked Puyo Puyo in that pieces fall in pairs and you line them up on your board, but you can’t erase your blocks without using colored Power Gems, which shakes things up plenty. This frantic puzzle game saw a soft re-release in 2017 for mobile devices, too, although it had a short run.
STAGE 4
Vs. Kirby & King Dedede
Stage: Dream Land GB (Ω)
Music: NORMAL MODE
KIRBY’S AVALANCHE WASN’T REAL AND IT NEVER EXISTED. Now that THAT is out of the way, Kirby and the Dream Land 2 crew starred in their own puzzle game in 1997 with Kirby’s Star Stacker. In this game, pieces fell in pairs, and you lined them up on your board to get Star Blocks in-between the same Animal Buddies to start a combo, which would make stars fall on the board and fill in the empty spaces. If you knew how to line stuff up on the board, you could rack up some insanely crazy combos!
STAGE 5
Vs. Pikachu & Jigglypuff & Pokémon Trainer
Stage: Pokémon Stadium
Music: Puyo Puyo FUNderworld!
Pokémon’s first original incursion in the puzzle game world was with 2005′s Pokémon Trozei! (or Pokémon Link! for the Eurobuddies) This game followed through with gameplay similar to that of Yoshi’s Cookie, but taking the advantage of both screens for some really fast gameplay. You also had to line them up in a straight line, but how you did it was up to you.
... wait a minute, don’t you think we’re forgetting something important?
STAGE 6
Vs. Dr. Mario & Peach (White)
Stage: 75m (Ω)
Music: The Puyo Puyo Song - In-Game Version
The original, colored reference for Puyo Puyo lies within Dr. Mario, of course! The NES 1990 classic which slowly evolved through time, and the one puzzle game that’s almost too similar to Puyo Puyo. You line up colors to form a straight line of four between viruses and pills, to erase those critters from your bottle. In VS mode, this actually means trouble for your foe, as randomly colored balls will fall on their field!
And, finally...
BOSS STAGE
Vs. Dracula
Music: Final of Puyo Puyo / Double Trouble Finale!
And for the last stage we beat Satan himself! Well, the one that was the closest, to be honest. We’re still fighting the final battle in a castle, against a devilish character with one cool cape with strong connections to Satan himself. And while Castlevania did have a puzzle game in the form of Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night in 2010 for mobile devices, I still believe that playing make-believe with Dracula portraying as the Dark Prince is a better way to go.
Número 5: Anything else I forgot across all entries?
Entrance animation: appearing from a light portal, similar to how she gets transported into Grimp in Puyo Puyo Chronicle.
Taunts:
Up Taunt: her victory pose from Madou: Saturn.
Side Taunt: a half-flip, ending with a V-sign, with Carbuncle bouncing.
Down Taunt: Carbuncle running around Arle with her following him as she spins.
Victory screen:
Theme: Final Results! (Story Clear) [Remix]
Carbuncle hops on Arle’s back as she does a V-sign, saying “We’re number one!”, recreating their victory pose from 15th Anniversary. This one also doubles as her Team Battle victory pose when she’s a team member.
Carbuncle bounces around Arle, up until she catches him mid-air as she says “We did it, Carby!”, mimicking their art from Puyo Puyo Quest’s Arle & Carbuncle card.
A dramatic zoom-in, as she enthusiastically raises her arm, vigorously, recreating her pose in the final screen of the original Puyo Puyo. Here, she can say either “Yes!” or “Big victory!”.
Mii Costumes:
Rulue’s Hat & Rulue’s Cape (Mii Brawler)
Schezo’s Hat & Schezo’s Outfit (Mii Swordfighter)
Puyo Hat
Sig’s Hat & Sig’s Outfit (Mii Gunner): The gun would be the red arm.
AND THUS I HAVE COMPLETED THE GLORY OF ARLE IN SMASH, how I think her content would be, which Spirits would be featured, which music would be included, and just how much content would be packed with her inclusion. I have to say, it feels incredible to finally have it all out of my chest, it feels hella relieving. If anyone wants to use this whole series as a basis for their own character requests, feel free to do so.
As of this post, this marks the last time, for real, that I’ll write about Arle in Smash Bros., because it has been a fun ride playing make-believe. But the truth is, she’s not in the game, thus the only thing we can do, is dream. And dream, I did. This is a testament of my love to the character herself, to the franchise, and to everyone who also wanted her in the game. If anyone involved in Smash Bros. reads this, know that while this is my utmost wish, I’d be happy with any representation of the Puyo series proper in Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Special thanks, once again, to everyone from the Puyo for Smash Discord, to my friends at the Edge of Forever, to everyone who read and shared this nonsense, and to everyone who helped with this massive creation by adding their own inputs from time to time.
And of course, to Masahiro Sakurai and Satoru Iwata, creators of Super Smash Bros., and to Mizuki Hosoyamada, current director of the Puyo Puyo franchise.
Making a little reference to SEGA themselves, if you count her, the Carby cameo in her taunts and victory screens, her stage, the tracks, and the Spirits from the Spirit Board, all of that adds up to 24! Don’t ask how, really.

Biscuit Reviews Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
I’ve never been the biggest fan of fighting games. I was always in awe at how fighting game players can hit different button combinations at a very fast pace. Then comes Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64 thinking how it was amazing that Nintendo had a handful of their popular characters fight it out for victory. I still remember the commercial of Yoshi, Mario, Donkey Kong, and Pikachu skipping along in the field of flowers, then Yoshi tripping Mario and a four person brawl ensues with “Happy Together” by the Turtles in the background.
This game was also different than any other fighting game as well showing a percentage meter, rather than a health bar. This was something that my 9-year-old mind was very curious about. How do you defeat your opponent then if you have no health?
A great thing about Smash Bros. is how despite being a fighting game, it also served as a gateway for many people to play other Nintendo series. The most famous case being Super Smash Bros. Melee, showcasing Marth and Roy from the Fire Emblem series, a turned based strategy game series never before released in the west. Their popularity in Melee was one of the factors that led Nintendo to bring the Fire Emblem series to the west (still waiting for that Roy-centered Fire Emblem remake Nintendo).
But, what was perhaps the most mind blowing thing to happen was Super Smash Bros. Brawl, when Snake from Metal Gear (a character from a Playstation exclusive series) and Sonic (Sega’s mascot, and Nintendo’s biggest rival in the 90s) joined the roster. It cemented Smash as a series that is not just strictly tied down to Nintendo franchises, but rather something that celebrates everything in gaming.
Smash for Wii U/3DS would further cement this by having Cloud and Bayonetta as DLC characters. This move also started negotiations in a business perspective as well for Square Enix and Platinum Games. Cloud paved the way for having Final Fantasy games being re-released on the Switch. In Bayonetta’s case, once a multi-platform series become a new Nintendo exclusive. Granted for Bayonetta there was more that went behind the scenes as to why Bayonetta became a Nintendo exclusive, it was her inclusion in Smash that really cemented the idea that she was here to stay.
Then you have the newest and most recent entry, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with the tagline “Everyone is here.” When they used that, many of us thought that every single fighter from Smash’s history would be in the game.
Now that very much is the case, but little did we know, that’s not all Nintendo meant with that tagline.
When Nintendo said “Everyone is here” they literally meant it. Almost every Nintendo franchise is in Smash in some way. Whether it be as a fighter, an assist trophy, or as a spirit. Spirits are the new addition to Smash. Equipping these Spirits can grant your fighters extra power and abilities such as stronger sword attacks, more health in stamina battles, and starting off with certain items at the start of the fight.
Despite Smash having a multiplayer focus, there’s plenty of options for both solo play for you practice with your favorite characters and get better.
Solo play has a World of Light campaign where you can unlock other characters and gain spirits. The interesting thing about World of Light is that the fighter will take on the traits of the spirit so it will act and behave like the spirit rather in battle.
Other modes, which can be played solo or co-op is the traditional Classic mode, which now has to option to be played with a friend, as well as challenge fights like Cruel Smash, 100 man smash and others.
Then of course you have the Smash where you or a group of friends can go in and fight each other, or you can go in solo and fight the computer. Smash has a variety of rules set that you can choose as well giving certain victory conditions to the fight.
Each fighter is also finally balanced to where they have their own feel gameplay wise. Although there are couple characters that do play similarly to others (Example Marth/Lucina, Ryu/Ken, Peach/Daisy), there are still some small differences to make them still unique despite having similar move sets.
The only critique I can offer to Smash Ultimate is that Fire Emblem has too much representation in this entry. I get it, there’s been a lot of Fire Emblem characters in Smash and there was kind of no way around it if they wanted every fighter in Smash. So in a way it seemed more like a “damned if we do and damned if we don’t” kind of situation.
Smash not only celebrates Nintendo, but gaming as a whole. The Fighter Pass so far is showing promise on expanding the already amazing roster. Personally, I think Smash has reached its peak with this entry as it’s going to be really tough to top itself with another entry.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate receives a 5 out of 5

AUGUST SMASH DIRECT THOUGHTS
Boy! That last Smash Direct certainly added more hype then there already was for Ultimate. Just like with the E3 Direct I’m going to go through the major things covered in the order they were announced
SIMON & RICHTER BELMONT
Simon was technically leaked twice. He was among a seemingly credible leak that mentioned Ridley, Snake, Ice Climbers, and no cuts. And then Simon apparently was accidentally leaked through some goof up by Nintendo. (Though I dodged it since I know it was only one night before the reveal so I still didn’t know for sure if Simon was in until the reveal). But either way this ia amazing, Castlevania is certainly a worthy inclusion in Smash on the likes of all the other NES franchises represented. But what wasn’t leaked was Richter as an echo. Richter was the protagonist of Rondo of Blood. Which wasn’t exactly on a Nintendo console unless you count Dracula X in the 90s. Richter was also in Symphony of the Night which has never been on a Nintendo console. But he’s famous even in the meme-wise cause he’s the one who’s there for when Dracula yells “WHAT IS A MAN?!” in the hammy voice acting that was normal for this era of gaming. He was also an unlockable character on a DS game but otherwise Richter isn’t too Nintendo famous. But he is the most popular Belmont in Japan. They just needed to still feature the most iconic Belmont as the main inclusion still. I’m fine with Richter though. Though when I play as either of them, I’m playing Simon more for sure.
P.S. The trailer was great, not just for the super cool footage of Simon. But it was hilarious seeing Luigi running scared. Luigi getting killed by Death has quickly even become the latest Smash Bros. meme
DRACULA’S CASTLE STAGE & BOSS
The stage itself looks fittingly creepy and will have some pretty amazing music I imagine too. And Dracula being a boss is great as well. I kinda wish they’d have him yell “WHAT IS A MAN?!” when he came in. But I imagine that would be a bit much and ruin the moment. But it’d be hilarious to me.
NEW ECHO FIGHTERS: CHROM AND DARK SAMUS
When Chrom showed up I actually smiled. Now I’m no Fire Emblem fan. And yes it’s another sword user, and a fourth Marth-like character. But given how humiliated Chrom was in Smash 4. Not just in the Robin/Lucina trailer but the memes it caused in the Smash fandom that made a once proud and potential newcomer into a butt monkey on nearly the same level as Ridley with the TOO BIG memes. Even for characters I don’t necessarily want to see I would not want that fate to happen to their fans. It’s just brutal. Though at the very least Chrom seems to borrow a few moves from Ike as well. I even thought at first he was an echo of Ike before I checked later that it was actually for Roy. So I’m pretty happy Chrom actually got to have his chance. I am also certainly using Chrom more then I ever will for Roy.
It’s no doubt though that Dark Samus stole the show for echoes. She’s already my favorite echo so far and she has some slick-looking animations that may make her more worth playing then regular power-suit Samus. Metroid fans can be happy that they’ve doubled up the reps. And both of them are well-deserved additions.
ECHOES CAN EITHER BE STACKED OR SEPARATED ON THE CSS
This also may lessen the disgust that people had with Dark Pit’s inclusion back in Smash 4. Just put the echoes in the corner of the character they’re echoing. I’m certainly going to keep them stacked myself. I think the CSS will also look cleaner that way
ALL CHARACTERS WILL BE REVEALED BEFORE LAUNCH
In other words, Sakurai has had it with those final roster leaks only weeks/days before release. Base Game speculation’s days are numbered until the final Smash Direct before release (Which would be likely in October or November). DLC speculation will immediately start after it. But we’re going to have our explosion of reactions to the final base roster done soon enough. Going to be some tense times until then
RETURNING STAGES
There’s so many returning stages! I’ll just say that Brinstar Depths, Magicant, and Fountain of Dreams are particularly ones I’m excited are back. Yoshi 64, Venom, Fourside, New Pork City, and Windy Hill are also nice to see.
CAPTAIN TOAD ON NEW DONK CITY
Welp, Captain Toad is looking very unlikely now. He could be DLC potentially since he isn’t a major stage hazard nor an Assist Trophy. But with a focus on longtime fan favorites and bringing every veteran back. Captain Toad just fell to the way side. It’s a shame, if the newcomers have been chosen in the same fashion Smash 4’s was. I think Captain Toad would of been a near certainty. This also unfortunately means that the last chance for a playable Toad has left us. Smash can’t include everyone, even with some characters like Ridley finally getting their chance, there are still some characters that would certainly count for Nintendo All-Stars that just couldn’t quite make it. This is probably one of the few disappointments I had with the direct. But I’ve dealt without a playable Toad for 4 games already, I can deal with another.
103 STAGES
Man that’s a lot of stages. Not to mention we won’t have to unlock any, they’ll be there from the start. Though Sakurai mentioning this does have me suspicious that this means there’s no more base game stages to add unless they are really trying to hide any newcomers that may come with stages. But it seems odd to point this out exactly if there were even just a few more stages in reality
STAGE HAZARD SWITCH
If you’re a competitive player or even just dislike stages where you’re fighting the stage more then your opponent then you absolutely should love this option. More viable stages and everything
STAGE MORPH
Now this is cool. And could definitely add to the Chaos of a match especially if you randomize both stages. Imagine you get a nice stage that would be competitively legal but then BAM you get something like Great Cave Offensive or Big Blue as the stage morph stage. Plenty of opportunity for hilarity there. Should be fun.
800+ TRACKS + 20 SONIC SONGS + STILL ONLY 2 FINAL FANTASY SONGS
Man this game’s soundtrack is going to be crazy! I am interested in what they have new for Sonic. There’s apparently only 20. If every Sonic song returned that was in either of the last two games. There’d be room for only 2. But if none of the Brawl ones return that leaves room for 6. And that’s not counting the possibility they cut some songs. Though perhaps another bummer from this is apparently Final Fantasy is still only getting 2 songs. So now we know it wasn’t just DLC budget getting in the way. Square is still being stingy.
STAMINA NOW A STANDARD MODE THAT CAN HAVE STOCKS
I’ve always kind of liked Stamina mode as something to be a change of pace of the regular gameplay. So it having it able to have stocks is quite cool
FINAL SMASH METER
Now this is really cool and may even open the possibility of some tournaments allowing Final Smashes in tourneys. I doubt it will be in really serious tournaments anyway, but could certainly allow for some hype in tourneys that do allow it.
SQUAD STRIKE
It’s a little vague at the moment. But Squad Strike might be the closest to something like the match in Smash Tour with a different character per stock? Though it could also just be a 1v1 match for each character. Also opens up for battles between teams.
OFFLINE TOURNEY RETURNS
You can have offline tournaments again like in Brawl and Melee! I sometimes just did CPU only tournaments with those which was kinda fun to watch. Just overall neat to have that back
SMASHDOWN
A cool option to have people not just use the same main they’re great with and also encourages people to diversify the characters they use.
TRAINING MODE UPGRADES
Training now has essentially a ruler to know your character’s launching power! Very cool and Competitive players will love it since it’s much easier to measure things.
CLASSIC MODE BACK TO MORE STANDARD
This is definitely a return to form for Classic mode. It’s kinda like SSB64’s but it’s a different set for each character that’s predetermined. No matter how many times you go through with one particular character it will be the same. While that may arguably sound like a step backward from the complete randomness of Melee’s classic mode. I actually love this a lot, the team can choose a particular set of opponents that make sense for that character to fight. Or even if it makes absolutely no sense, then it’s up to the fanbase to think of a reason for why they fight. Also what seems to be a thing is each character has a name for their run. Kirby had Gourmet Clash and Roy had A Journey of Swords. Bringing the same kind of intrigue that the Punch-Out Stage titles bring. I am excited to go through with every character like I always do.
NEW POKEMON
Alolan Exeggutor is hilarious, Abra will certainly provide some salt on some people, Mimikyu was a character often seen as possible to be the Gen 7 rep so might of been the first major reconfirmation not counting the Captain Toad one found later. Vulpix is a cute addition to the pokeball lineup. And Ditto is amazing. I almost kinda want the enemy team of this game to now be Ditto fighters.
NEW ASSISTS
Only 2 possibly major reconfirmations in the form of Zero and Shovel Knight. Zero was often seen as a possible 2nd Mega Man rep and Shovel Knight was considered the most likely if an Indie were to ever make it. It’s a miracle Shovel Knight even got this far though. Yacht Club games should be proud. Other then those though, Klaptrap looks annoying to deal with, Kapp’n seems funny just for the characters in the bus’ faces, Chef Kawasaki is the return of Kirby’s old Brawl final smash repurposed, Nikki’s a cute character to include, and the Majora’s Mask Moon is amazing as an assist trophy idea. It doesn’t even discriminate, even KOing the one it summoned. There was also the Rathalos assist trophy that turns out to also be a boss
ASHLEY DECONFIRMED
At the tail end of the Assist Trophy section was the sudden appearance of Ashley and not even with the name tag. Though they made her eyes red again. Ashley was considered one of the possible likely newcomers revealed this direct mainly because last week WarioWare Gold released. So it would be great timing. But it wasn’t to be. Sorry Ashley fans
MAIN MENU AND A MYSTERIOUS SPIRITS MODE
The menu looks more refined then Smash 4’s though I didn’t mind the Smash 4 menu as much as most people did. However most of the buzz is of course around the mode Sakurai had blurred out. Through some deblurring people found the mode will be called “Spirits” but that’s still too vague to know what it’ll be exactly. Based on any hints though from the bosses, it seems it will be some kind of Adventure mode. My guess is something in between Melee’s Adventure Mode and Subspace. Not as extensive as Subspace but more content then Melee’s adventure mode for sure. Perhaps you find the spirits of the characters to unlock them. But anything else is definitely all speculation at this point. It’ll be interesting to find out what this mode will be all about when we get to it.
KING K. ROOL
You know they just had to leave us with one more thing. And it certainly was a big one. K. Rool was only 2nd to Ridley in being one of the most wanted characters in Smash. And was often seen on the top of the list on the ballot. Also gotta say the trailer is amazing to show all those heroes and the villain and then it cutting to Donkey Kong, cause that’s when exactly you know who’s coming. The Dedede fakeout was also hilarious, though I doubt it really fooled anyone. K. Rool was in Smash and Donkey Kong finally gets a much needed increase of representation. Perhaps we’ll see Dixie soon come up as a Diddy echo. But until then K. Rool is what Donkey Kong fans as well as a good majority of Smash fans wanted. And he’s here cementing this Smash as certainly even more fan service focused then previous games.
Overall, an amazing direct. and can’t wait to see what else is in store for this game. We still have more characters and of course the Spirits mode to see. The road to Smash Ultimate is getting smaller each day and we’re surely in for a few more spots of interest along the way. Cannot wait to see what’s revealed next!

November 29: My Philosophy
On the night of November 1st, I spent hours into the night chatting with some of my closest online friends about Smash. We geeked out over Piranha Plant and Incineroar, discussed the potential of World of Light, and for a bit talked about the general Smash community. For one part of the latter, we mulled over the odd culture of character-specific campaigns and support groups. And while we were talking about it and possible future characters who might be potentially more or less interesting or valuable, one of them described me as (and I’m paraphrasing what she said a bit) “one of the most open people towards new characters I know.” It was really nice of a thing to hear, and I’ve thought about it every so often for a lot of this month. This post is going to be one big ego trip, but I would like to think a bit about why I approach newcomers in the way I do.
I’ve talked about this before, but Smash 64 and Melee had a profound effect on me as a kid. So when I really came back to Nintendo (and video games in general) in late 2005, the prospect of a third game, one even greater in size and scope than the last, was immensely exciting. The first Smash game made me love Kirby, but before my departure I only played Kirby 64; coming back, I jumped into Kirby & the Amazing Mirror - and from it, met Meta Knight. His cool style, plus my general enthusiasm for Kirby, made him pretty much immediately my most wanted character. He wasn’t the only one: Dedede, Lucario, Toon Wind Waker Link, Paper Mario, and Ridley were all exciting, especially as I started lurking on the hellscape that is Smashboards. But it was Meta Knight above everyone else, without question.
And wouldn’t you know it, but he was the very first newcomer. There were, of course, other characters and stages and music I wanted, some of which happened and some of which didn’t, but I was left now with an odd sensation of kind of full-on satisfaction. It was like I was being catered to directly, so my excitement then came just as much from unexpected things as they did from what I wanted. Lucario was cool, but a wild moveset from Olimar was almost better. I hoped for a Yoshi’s Island stage, but one based on the original Donkey Kong was so exciting in a way that couldn’t match. And the music! I started to get just as (if not more) interested in exploring the new tracks as characters, and those helped get me into some of Nintendo’s games with which I was less familiar. I wonder if, without a huge desire driving me more, all the new content made felt more...exciting, almost like a bonus? Then again, I suspect my attitude is actually matched by the vast majority of Smash players; they see a game that looks fun with some characters they love, and that’s it. And it’s something that’s not really changed since Brawl. My most wanted newcomer for Smash For was “come what may;” my three for Ultimate ended up being “a female fighter who wasn’t an Echo, a Pokémon, and “something surprising,” and I only landed on those after the August Direct. There haven’t really been characters who frustrated or upset me, and even thinking of fighters I explicitly do not want is hard. The real chase I get is from excitement and surprise, and that needn’t be limited to characters. Because of that, each incoming Smash game feels like a holiday, constantly doling out expected and surprising gifts. Each game deserves to be challenged, criticized, and interrogated, but none exist to provide solely only one new idea or element.
I do think that while it’s neither unique to me nor something that needs to be emulated, the philosophy I’ve been subconsciously developing over the past decade has made my relationship with Smash more positive and enjoyable. Few things are “make or break” for me, and while there are at least dozens of characters I’d especially love to have, each new one is exciting - especially ones I’d never consider. The most negative I’ve been about a newcomer was when Corrin’s trailer started, and their gameplay mostly won me over by the time it ended. I think that there’s a value in taking just a bit of distance, and especially in not putting all your hopes on one new (or returning) fighter. It also makes me feel as though Smash isn’t made for me, or at least not specifically or exclusively so. And honestly, that feeling is deeply freeing. I’ve talked before about how some fans view this series as almost needing to be about them, but one corollary to that is that giving up a bit of that intensity cuts out a great deal of weight. I guess what I’m saying - and this is deeply hypocritical coming from someone who’s written over two hundred posts this year (and over four hundred overall) about Smash on this blog alone - is that putting just a bit of distance, giving up just a bit of your hopes can be really helpful. And it can make new things feel more like a bonus and less like a potential threat. There really is a state of transcendence you can get after a point, I can promise you that.

Pokémon Red / Blue with graphics halfway between Pokémon Sun / Moon and Pokken Tournament. - Five Nights at Freddy out on Nintendo Switch to the autumn, with content that can be censored. - The conference ends with the game Smash Bros on Nintendo Switch. A trailer would unveil the Captain Toad Fighter, and the other one would reveal Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. The gameplay would be a mix of Smash 4 and Melee, the game being very colorful but detailed. Its release would be scheduled in September alongside the online service. Finally, Ice Climbers Fighters are revealed at Treehouse Live ...

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has so much competitive potential

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has so much competitive potential
Captain Falcon’s helmet on display.
Josh Miller/CNET
If you’ve played Super Smash Bros. throughout the years, chances are the new World of Light adventure mode or single-player gameplay aren’t what’s exciting you.
The game series — starting with the Nintendo 64 in 1999 — has constantly grown its single-player options, from adding Adventure Mode in Super Smash Bros. Melee on the Gamecube to the epic Subspace Emissary story in Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Nintendo Wii.
For the new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which arrives on Dec. 7 for $59.99 ((£49.99, AU$89.95), Nintendo introduced a new story mode called “World of Light,” where a force called Galeem blasts a light and captures every character in the game except for Kirby, who now has to save the world.
If you’re not familiar with Super Smash Bros., it’s a fighting game among video game characters where instead of depleting your opponent’s health bar, you try to knock them off the stage. The more damage you do, the easier it is to knock them out.
Super Smash Bros.’s bread and butter rests on its competitive play. It’s why years after the Nintendo 64 was discontinued, elite Smash players are still having combo contests, as if it were the dunk contest at the NBA All-Star game.
So when Nintendo invited several members of the media to a four-hour hands-on event with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, I went straight for the competitive gameplay.
The first booth I went to had four players in a free-for-all setup, items and stage hazards on. This more resembles playing with friends hanging out — it’s funny to see paddles from Pong as an Assist Trophy pops up on the screen and smacks Yoshi around the stage.
This is what Nintendo originally envisioned for the Super Smash Bros. series — a fun party game where random items across video game history come in and add to the chaos.
But if you’re like me, these matches are almost never fun until you get to the final one-on-one with the best player in the room. That’s where every Smash Bros. game shines, and I would get a taste of that each match after surviving an onslaught of Final Smashes, Pokéballs and Assist Trophies.
I wanted more of that one-on-one feel, the energy you get from a match at a local tournament or a money match with a fierce competitor. That’s when I spotted Nairoby “Nairo” Quezada, 22, and the fourth best Super Smash Bros. Wii U player in the world.
You might also recognize him from this year’s E3, where he easily defeated three celebrities at the same time.
We played head to head for about an hour, with Nairo destroying me the majority of the time. Most people wouldn’t think this is fun, but it’s the most enjoyable experience I had that whole time.
Super Smash Bros. has always been about tension and adapting, learning your opponent’s tactics, and figuring out how to counter it. It’s why the best players in the world don’t always stay at the top — the competitive scene is always developing new techniques to knock off the top player.
Across the Smash Bros. series, Nintendo has constantly adjusted the scale to fix the skill gap. In Melee on the Gamecube, it’s difficult to be competitive if you haven’t already mastered the game. In Brawl, Nintendo added features like random tripping, which nearly ruined the competitive scene.
With Smash Ultimate, Nintendo gives beginners many tools to get better, without making it too easy for competitive play. Take air-dodging, for example.
In Super Smash Bros. Melee, if you dodge in the air, you’re immobile and can’t do anything else until you land on the ground again. In Brawl and the Wii U versions, you could dodge in the air as much as you wanted, sometimes making combos more like a guessing game.
With Smash Ultimate, you get one air dodge, and a lot of lag after it — but you still have options, whether it’s to attack or escape. Little changes like that really add to the competitive potential.
From a 7-second clip that Nairo uploaded, competitive players were already breaking it down frame by frame to see if I could have escaped a killing combo.
Learning about Smash Bros. goes beyond the match, as top players rewatch footage the same way football teams do. Again, it’s fine if you’re not obsessed with Smash Bros. and willing to break down a 7-second clip, but if you are, Smash Ultimate is going to be really fun.
It also feels like there’s more of a focus on balancing the massive roster of 70 characters.
Strengths and weaknesses of all the characters are a lot more pronounced. King K. Rool, the Donkey Kong villain, is strong and has good recovery options, but has a shield on its stomach that cracks and temporarily paralyzes the player after three bad hits.
Simon Belmont, from Castlevania, has a long range because of his whip and good defensive options, but his mostly vertical recovery is a glaring weakness.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is much better at balancing these pros and cons between characters, and leaving it up to players to figure out the match-ups.
Of course, figuring out the match-ups can be much harder when you’re against one of the best players in the world. Every time I thought I figured out Nairo’s strategy he immediately adapted and countered in punishing fashion.
But I never felt like the game was broken or that there was no way I could beat him. The game leaves a lot of potential to be competitive, if you’re willing to take the time to learn.
For the record, I won one match, though I’m convinced he was going pretty easy on me.

So E3 is going to be upon us sooner rather than later and I thought I’d place my predictions down in advance.
Xbox: So Xbox is in a strange position. All future first party titles are going to be on game pass for $10 a month. This includes Sea of Thieves which has been our for a couple of months, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, and Forza’s next entry. Because of this I think at most we will get one other first party release at most coming this year. Other titles like Halo 6 might be shown, but only one unannounced unknown first party game revealed this year at E3 will be released by the end of 2018.
Now what could it be? Well maybe this is just the hopeless dreams of a fanboy, but Banjo Kazooie turns 20 two weeks after E3 wraps up. Dropping a from-the-ground-up remaster akin to Shadow of Colossus or the N.sane trilogy would be incredible. Only other thing I could see is the rumored Perfect Dark reboot. Whatever open world game Playground Games is working on I doubt will release this console generation.
On the topic of Banjo turning 20 I can see Rare celebrating with some new content for Sea of Thieves. An Island in the style of Treasure Trove Cove or Hammerhead beach, some new voyages themed to the franchise, but more importantly some cosmetic items. If not themed to the franchise itself they could totally pull from the concept art for Project Dream and give us some Edison and Captain Blackeye. I also think other themed islands are a potential down the line. Viva Piñata makes perfect sense and I’m sure there are other possibilities for more islands inspired by other properties.
Game-pass and Xbox Live Gold I think will become one. Now this isn’t an original idea. Pulled it from Kinda Funny’s Gamescast, but it’s an idea so crazy I think it’s possible. I think the most likely scenario is a 50% discount on Game-pass with a Gold subscription, but that’s mostly because otherwise it’d be doubling the yearly price of Xbox Live Gold. This would mean for $120 a year you’ve got online access on top of a massive library of games including all of the major future Xbox One exclusives.
PlayStation: So Sony has stated what most of the conference will be. The conference itself will be a deep dive into Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima, Spider-Man, and The Last of Us Part II. Obviously we will get gameplay for all four and if The Last of Us Part II is having multiplayer again it will be announced here with a beta this summer. Spider-man will get its last pre-order bonus costume unveiled and whatever is shown will allow the reveal of the collector’s edition’s statue.
Just because the main conference is pretty much confirmed to be just these four games doesn’t mean they won’t reveal anything in the pre-show. Dreams will have a firm date for a beta some time before The Last of Us has its multiplayer beta. If Microsoft doesn’t buy them on to their stage, we will see our first look at Spyro 2 in the Reignited Trilogy during the preshow as well.
Nintendo: Some Zelda Collection for Ocarina’s 20th anniversary. Be it ports of the 3DS remakes of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask up scaled or something more, we will see some celebration of Ocarina of Time this year. I think odds are also likely we will see some Joy-cons for this collection, most likely Ocarina of Time Blue and maybe an Amiibo series for Ocarina with all 7 Sages, another Young Link and Adult Link, and Zelda and Ganondorf. Maybe even another jumbo Amiibo in the Giant Goron or Beast Gannon. I have no idea what they’d all unlock, but people would collect them for damn sure.
We will get at least one Smash character reveals during the Nintendo Direct, and probably one at the Round Table if they’re doing another along with one during the tournament Nintendo will be holding. We will see the new Mario and Zelda stages along with Battlefield for this game. I have a feeling the tournament reveal will be the Arms representative. The reveal in the direct will be third party along with whatever super out there reveal they’ve got planned. If one of these reveal opportunities is missed it’ll be during the tournament.
While the Virtual Console name seems like it’s going away, its equivalent will get announced here and it’ll lead into Smash somehow. GameCube support will be announced for the service/line along with a GameCube style Pro Controller and a set of Joy-cons. If this special Joy-con set is made, I expect ones themed to NES and SNES as well. N64 is possible, but I think it’s less likely. Maybe a special Pro Controller down the line, but that design doesn’t fit the Joy-con design as easily.
So how do you lead in from GameCube support to Smash? Show what looks like Melee footage complete with wave dashing Fox and Marth on Hyrule Temple. Then something out of place for Melee shows up: ideally this is a new character or a returning character. Ideally a Snake or a Wolf or something else with GameCube ties. The new Smash Bros, hopefully named by now, will allow you to not just customize the rules, but physics and such so that you can play like Melee, Brawl, 3DS/WiiU, and 64. Maybe this extends to character models, maybe not, but this would be huge since it would mean online Melee. Oh and a Pre-order bonus would be a code redeemable for Melee on this Virtual Console replacement which will be a launch title for this new service planned to launch in November.
I’m guessing that the character reveals will include one predictable, one unlikely, and at least one third party character. Any and all ports to the Switch I can see slyly leading into a character reveal. I believe that Doom Marine has a real shot, but if they’re coming to Smash, Crash Bandicoot and Banjo & Kazooie will close out the Smash reveals and maybe the conference. Nintendo will recreate the original Smash TV spot from the 90s but instead of Mario starting the Brawl Crash will show up with the megaphone and start the fight. Phil Spencer will point up and Banjo will crash land on top of them all. If Crash isn’t there Banjo will still fall from the sky on top of them.
Whatever Pokémon for Switch ends up being it will be there and there will be connectivity with Pokémon Go. This connectivity will be cosmetic in nature for the most part with occasional event Pokémon. These events won’t be Legendary Pokémon but instead Pokémon with special moves. These will be tied to the Pokémon Go Community Days. The cosmetics will be tied to each games medal system, which will be in the new game.
The Yoshi game will get a title and release date that will be no later than August.
Bethesda: Whether or not it comes out this year or not, Bethesda Studio’s will reveal Starfield. It will be a cross between Destiny and your traditional Fallout or Elder Scrolls title. There will be a mobile tie in and it will launch on at least one Smart Phone Operating System that night and a companion App will launch closer to the game’s release. Expect another recap on what’s going on with Elder Scrolls Online since that’s almost tradition at this point. Some other Switch Port will be announced, probably a Fallout game. If Bethesda is getting a representative in Smash it isn’t entirely impossible for it to happen here, but it’s more likely to be held for the Nintendo Direct.
Ubisoft: If Starlink: Battle for Atlas still exists, they are dropping the Toy’s to Life angle. While the model shown in the reveal trailer will be available via a collector’s edition and maybe even be customizable as was shown, you will instead be buying ship upgrades exclusively through an online shop making the game a Games as a Service title. Just Dance 2019 will be unveiled and it will have both songs from Super Mario Odyssey in the Nintendo versions. Speaking of Nintendo, a massive amount of ports will come to the Switch including the entire Ubiarts lineup (Valiant Hearts and Child of Light), Watch_Dogs 2, maybe 1 as well, and Far Cry 3 Classic. As for new games I’d expect Watch_Dogs 3 that will be a games as a service title. If Beyond Good & Evil 2 is there then they will need to announce a beta or something with plans to run it this year, I don’t expect they’ll hit this year.
EA: Who gives a fuck really? Battlefield will get a new entry. Maybe some Battlefront updates. They need to show something Star Wars that isn’t Battlefront but that’s probably not going to happen. Expect half an hour of sports half an hour of shooty-shooty bang-bang.
Square Enix: I didn’t expect to have to predict this line-up. We will see Shadow of the Tomb Raider here, and it’ll be different footage than what was shown at the Microsoft conference. We will see a chunk of gameplay that the press already saw. The original reboot will be making its way to the Nintendo Switch in July with Rise coming in August. They’ll say that Shadow of the Tomb Raider is in development for the Switch as well but it will not be day-in-date.
Dontnod will reveal the first look at Life is Strange 2. It will be set at Blackwell Academy, but in the distant past. The power will be the ability to read minds. My guess is the late game reveal will be the ability to reshape memories themselves, but obviously they won’t reveal that here. The game will be out later either late this year or early next year. In the meantime the original will be coming to the Nintendo Switch and all current gen versions of the game will be updated with the mobile versions photo mode.
Kingdom Hearts 3 will seem to close the show. The Frozen world will be revealed along with a release date if it hasn’t yet been revealed already. If it’s going to happen at all, the Xbox versions of the various collections will be announced here and they will be out this summer before the release of Kingdom Hearts 3. It will be the one crazy title to try and go toe to toe with Red Dead Redemption in October.
Kingdom Hearts 3 will not close the show however. We will see a cinematic trailer for the Avengers game. No gameplay will be shown on stage, but an alpha build will be shown behind closed doors.
