Old Tech Blog 2: Nintendo DS

Hello everyone, MonadoBoy16 here.

Time for another Old Tech Blog.  This blog will be about the second best-selling game system (as of writing this blog post) of all time and the best-selling handheld of all time.  The Nintendo DS.  Released in 2004.  This system was a childhood favorite of mine.  I remember getting the blue PHAT ds with Big Brain Academy.  What made this system special is its dual screen, which is nothing new for Nintendo, they did that concept back with the Game & Watch series with the Multi-Screen series.  The DS has a touchscreen and a stylus, which became a big selling point for the system, especially in the US with the infamous “Touching is Good!” slogan.  Speaking of which, DS not only stands for Dual-Screen, it also stands for Developers’ System, as Nintendo believed it gave game developers more innovative ways to develop games for the system.  That also resulted in lots of shovelware for the system.

The DS has two cartridge slots: one for the DS game cards and the other for GBA Backwards compatibility. The GBA cartridge slot is also used for some accessories like the Rumble Pak and the Guitar Hero On Tour Guitar Grip.  Because of the use of dual-cartridge slots, the DS is the first Nintendo handheld to have a menu, where you can select either the DS or GBA game depending on which is inserted.  The same menu is where you can use Pictochat, Download Play, or adjust settings (including an option to set the DS to Auto or Manual mode).  The big appeal of playing the DS is with the DS Games:  Some games require the stylus like The Pokemon Ranger Games, Kirby Canvas Curse, or WarioWare: Touched.  Others use it optionally like Tetris DS.  While Some rarely use the Stylus like Mario Kart DS or Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (In fact, the latter DOESN’T EVEN use the touch screen 99% of the time). The DS still had some big system sellers like New Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, and The Mainline Pokemon Games.

I should rant a bit about New Super Mario Bros. for a bit.  While the first game, released in 2006, was creative and all (heck, it was the first 2D Mario title in like 14 years), the name New Super Mario Bros. became synonymous with the Toad-Infested, Candy-hill, cash-grabs starting with New Super Mario Bros. Wii in 2009 and it affected the entire Mario franchise (including spin-offs) until 2017 with Super Mario Odyssey (well, almost (Looking at you Paper Mario: The Origami King)) and a warning sign of this nostalgia pandering bullshit.

Anyway, rant over. Time to continue with this blog, in 2006 due to overwhelming demand, Nintendo released the Nintendo DS Lite, the most popular model of the DS family.  The DS Lite is smaller and lighter than the original phat DS, hence the “Lite” in “DS Lite”.  In addition, the system also has a proper brightness adjustment.  There is still the same GBA Cartridge slot (now being covered by a dust cover for convenience), and the stylus and power (the latter is now a slider) are now moved to the right of the system.  To compensate for the lite’s smaller size, the two screens are slightly larger.  However, there is one thing that the PHAT DS has over the DS Lite, and that’s the charging connector.  The original DS uses the same connector as the GBA SP, which was released a year before the DS, making them easier to find.  But, the DS Lite uses a proprietary charger, making it the only member of the DS family to use a proprietary charger due to the different connectors.  That was so stupid back then, but then again, since the DS Lite is the most popular model in the DS family, finding used DS Lite chargers is still considered easy.

In 2009 (2008 in Japan), Nintendo released an overhauled version of the DS called the Nintendo DSi. The “i” in DSi stands for “Individual” and not the cameras (making this the first Nintendo handheld to have such cameras built-in). Most likely due to the overhauled DS menu, aforementioned cameras, and Built-in Wifi.  With the DSi came the DSi Shop, where you can download games called DSiWare (until 2017), though, the free apps, Web Browser and Flipnote Studio, were later pre-installed. In addition, some DSi Models have DSiWare games pre-installed.  I remember my Metalic Blue Black Friday model having 5 pre-installed Mario Titles: Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again, WarioWare: Snapped, Dr. Mario: Express, Mario Calculator, and Mario Clock.  Those were the days.  However, the DSi removed the GBA cartridge slot, making accessories that require it useless.  The DSi also removed Auto Mode, but that makes a little more sense due to the fact that you can return to the DSi Menu at any time.  The next year after the DSi was released, Nintendo released the final model in the original DS family, the Nintendo DSi XL.  As the name suggests, it’s a larger version of the DSi with larger screens.  Other than the size of the system and also coming with a slightly larger stylus, it’s the same as the original DSi.  I should point out that there are a few DSi exclusive cards (colored white) and DSi enhanced games that take advantage of the DSi’s cameras and better wifi (at the cost of them being region-locked (unless if you’re playing the DSi Enhanced games on a DS or DS Lite)).  One thing I need to mention about both DSi models, is that they use the same charger as the 3DS family of systems, making them easier to find.

As for the accessories, we have that use the GBA cartridge slot like the Rumble Pack and the Guitar Hero On Tour controller, carrying cases from a simple handbag to a bowling ball bag under liscense from Brunswick, and even stylus that looks like a clickable ballpoint pen.  Carrying cases and collectable stylus’ can sometimes use licensed properties like SpongeBob and Star Wars.

The last DS game to ever be released on a game card was Big Hero 6: Battle in the Bay.  Released as a tie-in to the Big Hero 6 movie by Disney.  Noticed that I said “game card” in the first sentence of this paragraph, because the last DSiWare game to be released was Crazy Train, released one year BEFORE the DSi Shop was discontinued.

As for collecting DS stuff, I recommend you pick up all 4 models of the DS family for collecting purposes or retro gaming.  However, it’s important to note that only the DS and DS Lite are the ones backwards compatible with GBA games for obvious reasons.  For DS games, only the NTR Cards are region-free and will work in all 4 models regardless of region.  However, the DSi Enhanced cards (TWI) are only region-free on the DS and DS Lite, while they’re region-locked on the DSi and DSi XL.  DSi Exclusive cards and DSiWare titles are also region-locked for obvious reasons.  For the accessories, while you can pick up some starter kits, collectable stylus’, or carrying cases.  I should point out that some accessories, like the rumble pack, will only work on the DS and DS Lite for obvious reasons.  And yes, the 3DS family of systems can play almost all of the DS games.

Off topic here, but did you notice the color of the phat DS I used in the top image.  Well, I actually had that color as a kid.  I regret accidentally breaking it though.

Veth

Lives with Yeza and Luc in Nicodranas, but don’t look for them there. They are constantly traveling as a family. Most of the time it’s just for fun, Yeza has gotten really interested in seeing the world and Veth isn’t ready to settle down yet.

Sometimes Caleb asks her to find some magical item and she’ll go with Jester or someone else from the M9.

Caduceus

Goes back home, he enjoys living with his family for awhile. Eventually he sets up a tea shop in the nearest town. There he serves tea and talks with people.

He does charge for the tea, but barely anything. For one copper you can get 3 cups. At first it’s because he doesn’t understand money but eventually it’s just because he doesn’t care.

Despite its cheap price, the tea is world renown and people come from all over, Cad listens to all their stories. Quite a few regular customers ask to be buried in the garden. Caduceus remembers all their stories and tells a bit about them whenever he serves their tea.

Jester

Joins Veth on A LOT of her travels. Especially early on, including the ones with Yeza and Luc. Jester sometimes watches Luc while Yeza and Veth hang out alone. And sometimes Yeza watches Luc while Jester and Veth get into shenanigans. It’s an odd arrangement, but it works pretty well.

When she isn’t traveling with friends she’s working on her book, it’s a tale of The Mighty Nein! It’s actually more of a graphic novel or comic than a book. It’s very accurate and detailed, but things like emotions and relationships are highly exaggerated.

Jester comes over to the new Solstryce Academy often and gives “art lessons” that are hardly lessons at all, but they’re still extremely fun. She says that they shouldn’t focus too much on schoolwork. She never did and it worked out great for her.

Caleb

Is a teacher at the new Solstryce Academy, he was the one who made it and has quite a bit of sway and power. He could be the headmaster, but he isn’t he wanted to actually teach the kids instead of dealing with administration. (I’m not the first person to say this but Idk who was ).

The new school not only teaches Wizards, it also: helps Warlocks with interfacing with their benefactors, Clerics with using their godly powers, druids with druiding, bards with Barding, and they have courses for most other classes.

Caleb also sets up a teleportation circles across the continent so students can visit home whenever they want. For the towns that are far from all the circles Caleb personally teleports them there around once a month if they want.

Essek teaches there aswell, (or he works at a school in Rosohna and they have an exchange program)

Beau

Works as an expositor for quite awhile. Eventually she starts “teaching” but not at the school. The school will give her students who want to test their skills or troubled students or students who are learning too fast. She takes them on missions with her and give them personalized lessons.

She visits TJ between every mission. He actually does want to run the Lionett Wine Company when he grows up. Beau listens to every one of his ideas and adds some of her own. When he does take over the company becomes the biggest seller of wine in Wildemount.

Sometimes she joins Veth on her more adventurous missions. And a few times she takes TJ and joins the family trips (TJ and Luc are best buddies).

Fjord

Runs an orphanage. I love this so much credit to @freckledmccree

Caduceus comes over every now and then and tells the kids stories. They all grow up drinking dead people tea and think it’s completely normal.

Jester comes by and gives them art “lessons” again it’s a vague term. But she also comes over to hang out or watch the kids a lot.

A few of the kids go off to Solstryce Academy, Fjord tells them to go to Mr. Widogast if they ever need help. They come back home every weekend. Caleb visits occasionally to help Fjord.

Beau is somehow a genius with kids and comes over between her missions. They think she is so. cool.

Veth visits occasionally for the sole purpose of teaching them stuff Fjord doesn’t want them to know yet (“Rezte where did you get that crossbow? And how do you know how to shoot it, you’re 4!” “Veth please stop teaching them how to make acid there are 30 holes in the floor”) and to tell them embarrassing stories about Fjord. Sometimes Luc will hangout there.

Yasha

She also does quite a lot of fighting. 1 on 1 in underground rings usually, she doesn’t like too much attention so she rarely comes to a place more than once.

Travels the country side with her wife ( I know I said no ships but I want Yasha to have a wife so shhhh). Camping beneath the open sky and eating shit like rats and spiders. It’s perfect. She settles down in a house that she fills with flowers, (cottagecore)she had Jester paint a portrait of Zuala and it is openly displayed on the wall. Her wife is completely supportive of it.

She’s a sort of myth “ hey did you hear? Yasha fought at the Rainy Maple last night.” “Who?” “Yasha?! She’s this badass barbarian she only fights once at each place and never returns, she’s only ever lost once.”

She also becomes a damn good harpist. She mostly performs alone, with her wife or for friends. She had performed with the ruby of the sea a couple times before though. She likes that most of the attention goes to a Marion.

Yasha comes by Fjords orphanage once and one of the kids who was having trouble adjusting, gets super attached. A 2 year old little girl who follows her everywhere. She comes back a few more times with her wife and they fall in love. They adopt the little girl after like 2 weeks.

What was the drama with tumblr user pizza?

basically from what I can remember (and this is going way back in internet years now) she was basically advertising really dodgy diet pills on her blog lmao. she obviously had a super popular blog, and the ads weren’t anything in-your-face, but every so often she would make a promotional post for them and like... that shit is actually harmful, and also at the time I’m pretty sure that kind of thing violated Tumblr’s terms of service? it might have also been something to do with click-through links, but I have no idea. at the very least, advertising that kind of thing would definitely come under promoting harmful material, so she got nerfed.

I remember seeing her talk about it on her other blog, and apparently she woke up that morning to like, dozens of texts from her friends screaming that her blog had been deleted. apparently she could earn $10,000 a week on that blog. there was actually a proper news article written about it, featuring pizza (real name Jess Miller) posing with... you got it. pizza. truly this excerpt has all you need to know about the Tumblr culture of the time:

You took a breath, lifted your phone, and peeked at it with one eye. You didn’t even have to unlock it to see the response. You opened the other eye and read the text. Your legs were jelly as you walked up the bar’s steps. Patrons tipped their hats to you, and one of them—Riley, a regular, opened the door for you. “Thank you, Riley.” “Yes, ma’am.” You stepped inside of the full—but not crowded—bar. It was 5:45 on a Monday, so it wasn’t jumping quite yet. Most folks were still stuck on the highway or getting dinner started around that time. Junie, the day shift bartender looked up at you and waved. Just as you waved back, one of the patrons turned around to glance at you—boss and nighttime bartender, Clyde.

   Your heart dropped and you kept walking straight to his office, where you kept your apron and pad. He was probably telling Junie about how he was going to kick you and all your holes out of his bar. In the office, just when you’d tightened the apron around your waist, Clyde stepped in and closed the door behind him. You just let it on out.   “Clyde, I’m sorry about last night. I didn’t mean to send that to you.” “It’s alright,” he said. He leaned against the door and stared down at you. You patted your pockets, in search of your pad and your spine. “Do you do that for money?” he asked. Your head shot up. “Yeah…” “I wish you’d have told me you needed the help.” “No, it’s not like that. I just…I do it for money, but…I kinda enjoy it, too.” “Oh,” he said with disappointment in his voice. You frowned. “Look, Clyde. I appreciate your concern. But, if you’re expecting me to feel ashamed—” “No, no. That’s not it…” he mumbled. “I just…” You watched his puppy dog eyes lower, then rise again. His body rocked from side to side. “I’m just gon’ go on and say it. It don’t sit right with me, knowin’ somebody else is lookin’ at you like that.” “Somebody else?” He looked down again. “Somebody that ain’t me.” You smiled. “Clyde, I didn’t know you felt that way.” “Well. I do.” You ran your fingers along his jawline, then planted a soft peck on his cheek. He stared into your eyes, then initiated a harder kiss. Seconds later, you slowly pulled away from him. “Not to make things weird,” you started. “But I thought about you when I came last night…” Clyde blushed. “You did?” “Mm-hmm.” You nibbled at his jawline and heard him draw a deep breath through his nose. “You alright?” “Yeaaahhh…” he said in strained, high-pitched voice. “It’s just now, I’m thinkin’ about gettin’ you on that desk.” “Clyde!” you said with a dropped jaw. This time, you were blushing.  He ran his fingers up and down your waist. “Lemme add somethin’ to your thoughts for the next time you get ta ridin’ that toy…” Your eyes lowered and your nipples hardened, and Clyde maneuvered his hand behind him and locked the door.  You looked down at your watch. 5:50PM. “But—” “We have time.” He started walking toward you until you bumped into his desk. SOME SITE UPDATES & JOURNAL ENTRIES:

February 5: day six of truckstops and statelines. i've never had so much fun on a tour, tomorrow we will be in providence, and hopefully will have a glorious reunion with our boys in treos.they just shot a new video so be on the lookout for that. I've started playing black mamba with the academy, mike and sisky get super dirty on stage. i'm just trying to hang..also we may or may not be working on an extra special cover involving both bands on the stage at one time... on another note i just wanted to talk for a moment about all the things that have been happening with the band recently, and i've felt a bit of backlash and just wanted to tell you the truth about things. first of all, we were #10 on trl because of you, and nothing else. we never intended to be on the countdown, and were actually more against the idea of it than for it.we never posted on our website, or anywhere else for that matter, asking you to vote for us,but we were flattered that you guys took time and voted for us anyways, i think it set some kind of record, that it was the first time that a band on an indie label as small as fbr had an artist on the trl countdown, definitely shook things up a bit. #2 i've heard that we PAID our way onto trl, which could quite possibly be the greatest waste of money our band could make, and also one that would never happen.#3 we are doing our best to come out and meet everyone at these shows, but it's just not possible to meet everyone. we're sorry, but i can gaurantee that if you stop by the merch table after the show you'll be able to find at least one of us there. see you soon. - Ryan

February 23: the camera clicks.and then we are stars. it's been a while. i've been pretty busy lately working on suprises for our headlining tour, whatever you expect it to be right now, think the opposite.shooting a new video soon also, so look for that soon-ish.found out that we are in a great little mag called "J14" i'm sure you all are just as excited as we are about that one.unfortunately those kind of things are out of our hands, we don't have to give permission to them to put us in there..at least we aren't stickers.or maybe that would be awesome? fun fact of the day.i haven't shaved in a week or so, and i got a new razor today, and managed to shave my entire face.almost. it died before i could get the stache.pretty much sums me up right there. we like the boys with the bullet proof vests. we like the girls with the cellophane chests. - ryan

March 5: ebay somebody just showed us a couple items on ebay that we "autographed". the first item is an autographed copy of the new AP. the auction which can be seen here, and unfortunately we just saw an actual copy of the magazine yesterday (the auction has been going for the last 7 days). interesting, right? the other item (by the same seller) is an autorgrahed drumstick (here) . I do not play that brand of sticks, and like the magazine thoese signatures are not ours. I realize these auctions are ending very soon, and people are spending a lot of money on them. We really don't know what to say, but please know we try and hang around at shows to sign as many things as possible. You're probably better off trying to find us at a show than being taken advantage of on potentially phony autographs. Thanks and see you all at the shows... - Spencer

In a world without magic, Tom Riddle’s quest for immortality starts with kidnapping God. God -- who still thinks of himself as Harry -- has been doubting his suitability for his divine Opportunity, and his melancholy has reached such depths that his kidnapping comes as something of a relief. 

The Philosopher King (WIP)

Tom Riddle received a thorough education in magic, cultivated an influential following, and secured his immortality. He then disappeared into the Muggle world and was quickly convinced that, left unchecked, Muggles were certain to doom the entire planet. Tom returned a decade later with a careful strategy for world dominion. He succeeded.

By the time a young Harry Potter, Heir to his Name and ward of the Malfoy family, is handed a wand at the traditional age of eight, he stands to inherit a modest territory of 25,000 square kilometers and eight thousand restless Muggle subjects.

Guaranteed

”But there must be a reason for the low price,” protests the realtor.

”Wouldn’t all that be part of the seller’s guarantee?” Tom absently lists the mandatory disclosures from the form his realtor showed him with the ease of a photographic memory: some seepage in northeast corner of cellar; signs of disease in the oak tree adjacent to the carriage house; attic storm windows need replacement; evidence of one (1) poltergeist house-wide, rated B- (benevolent/leaning negative).

Ride (WIP)

Harry lives with the Dursleys, but he has two best friends, a regular bunk at the Weasleys', and a bright future riding horses. It’s unclear whether crossing paths with Tom Riddle, super-rich kid and a skilled horseman himself, is good luck or bad.

They crash together on the day they meet with a violent combination of mutual lust and personality conflicts. And yet somehow instead of hating each other they develop different feelings, no less intense.

(Harry can never totally shake that question during all their years together: was meeting Tom the best thing to ever happen to him, or the worst?)

Corruptible (WIP)

Harry Potter goes to Knockturn Alley for a prostitute, under a flawless glamour. When he sees a handsome young man outside the tavern infamous for picking up prostitutes, he hires him before he even asks his price. Tom Riddle isn’t really a prostitute, he was just making a delivery for his employer, Borgin & Burke’s. But Tom has never been one to miss an opportunity, and he sees Harry Potter for exactly who he is. 

Improved (WIP)

When humanity discovered the limitations of inorganic technologies, the human genome was improved, giving the specimen access to the full range of abilities of the human mind, including telekinesis and telepathy. To ensure that these Genetically Improved Humans (or just “Improveds”) weren’t able to go rogue, they were each made with a biological compulsion for the touch and approval of a human link.

The forging occurs when the Improveds are sixteen, and usually with a link that has been raised alongside the Improved in the academy on New Earth where all improveds are made.

Occasionally a forging goes wrong. That seemed to be the case for TMR, a sixteen-year-old Improved of terrifying talent whose link hung herself two days after they were forged.

The Great Hall falls silent. Slowly, all eyes are drawn towards the single figure atop the Gryffindor table.

Nobody moves. Nobody wants to be eviscerated piece by piece by Tom Riddle in the middle of the night.

Harry huffs in disappointment. “Figures that you’re all a bunch of flobberworms. Cowards, the lot of you!” he shouts, then clambers off of the pot roast as his robes start to smoke from the acidity of Snape’s glare.

Operation: Time to Call In Another Dimension (WIP)

Fed up with their Lord’s fruitless pining, the Death Eaters call in some favors. Frodo also calls in some favors, and soon, the denizens of Middle Earth are in on plan Z: make Voldemort so jealous that he has to make a move, the elvish version.

Tom wishes someone had actually asked him that question beforehand, because then he might’ve wisely reconsidered. Unfortunately, no one was around at the time, so now Tom’s stuck cleaning up after Harry’s messes when his assistant is supposed to be cleaning up his.

Thomas Riddle and the Lamb of Dreams

Tom Riddle is granted his right to reincarnate under one condition: a probation period of 25 years in his next life, supervised by the very god that's claimed him—the God of Dreams, formerly (in life) Harry Potter.

No one mentioned being born back in time, in an alternate dimension, forced into the "champion" role by said god. Or, now that he thinks about it, actually liking his supervisor, who is a cuddly lamb at his best and an irritating nuisance at his worst.

And a horse. Tom figures it's rather important to mention that part, since everyone else seemed more than happy to ignore it.

By now he's sure his life is just cosmic irony defined.

Reading the Signs

He comes every Wednesday for the Wednesday special, stands at the same machine all the way until closing time, and never says a word.

It takes Tom four months to find out the kid’s actually a famous rhythm game champion, another month to get his name, and (embarrassingly) another month to figure it out. Harry—with his green eyes and messy hair and round, clunky glasses—is completely, utterly mute.

Counting Bodies Like Sheep

It's a crazy world torn straight out of a horror movie - the undead roam the earth and destroy everything in their wake. When Harry Potter narrowly escapes a horrible death he finds himself a companion in Tom Riddle - a mysterious, heartless man who doesn't hesitate to take lives to save his own. Savage as the man is, Harry still finds himself enthralled... He quickly starts developing strange needs and feelings.

When they decide to finally find a safe place to settle down for a while they encounter dangerous enemies on their path. Tom's past demons come back around to haunt the both of them and it becomes very clear that even after the years they spent together, Harry really doesn't know Tom at all.

Being the Chosen One was so tiresome to Tom, so boring. The only one who seemed to see him for his potential was the Dark Lord known as Harry Potter.

When Harry witnesses a deaf boy named Tom getting harassed, he’s quick to stand up for him. At that moment he doesn’t know Tom is going to be the love of his life, and he doesn’t know what’s going on inside Tom’s mind. He never will. 

Count On Me

Harry had bought Tom’s dead mother flowers even though he barely made any money with his shitty job as a store clerk at the local supermarket. He was cold, as Tom was, but he didn’t complain. When Tom didn’t laugh at his jokes he simply kept saying random things in the hopes of being able to witness the faintest of smiles gracing Tom’s features.

First and foremost, Tom is an artist. He appreciates beauty in a different way – but that does not mean that the boy modeling for him right now isn’t arousing.

Harry is a member of an ancient vampire Pureblood family. To be even seen with a Spawn is considered the biggest betrayal and will be punished with death... But we never do choose the ones we fall in love with, and vampire or not, Harry is no exception to that.

ok! so giorgia was born and raised in new york city. both of her parents came from extremely wealthy families. her mother was a french socialite and her father was the golden boy of a hearst-like (founders/owners of a distinguished publishing conglomerate) family from connecticut. some of his family members claimed to be descendants of one of oscar wilde’s cousins (a rumor that has yet to be confirmed) and he believed he had it in him to become a literary great himself. he seemingly succeeded, having published multiple best sellers popular with young pseudo-intellectuals. 

giorgia was never sure if her mother had wanted a daughter or a life-size doll. from a very young age she was primed to fit into high society and paraded around her parent’s lavish parties. most of her time was spent with nannies and violin tutors, studying her father’s poetic heroes, and dancing ballet. she was taught how to socialize with society’s elite, but she never felt comfortable doing so. she felt safer hiding behind her mother or sitting beneath the stairs with her nose in a book.

while her mother wanted her child to be pretty and proper, her father wanted someone to continue his family’s legacy. she learned to read when she was four, and by the time she was five, gio was forced to write in a diary every. single. day. (over the last fifteen years she’s filled up dozens of notebooks that live on a bookshelf in her childhood bedroom). she didn’t particularly like her father and she didn’t want to want what he wanted for her. (did that sentence make sense? i hope so). but she did like to write and she was damn good at it. her poetry was published in online journals and lit mags, her short stories won young artist awards. on the outside, she was everything her parents wanted.

but like i said before, gio struggled with the social part or being a socialite, and the life of an heiress was never something she wanted. she didn’t seem to have the right attitude - she was demure and diffident, a textbook wallflower. she was never happier than when she was reading a book or roaming a museum, always curious about the world around her. she never misbehaved or did anything wrong, but her parents wanted her to behave differently. 

their tribeca penthouse always had a certain cold air to it and the high ceilings only seemed to add to the lonely feeling that gio couldn’t escape. her relationship with her parents seemed to become more strained with each passing day. the more she learned about them the more gio realized she didn’t know them at all - the spa retreats her mother went on were really trips to psychiatric facilities and rehabs, and the endless slew of young women her father employed as assistants were all lazily hidden affairs. they never talked about it, if she tried to she was shut down or ignored entirely.

gio grew up wanting to go to nyu. she didn’t know where the dream came from (her parents wanted her to go to vassar or dartmouth) but she loved her home city and something about nyu had always called to her. she was accepted early admission to the gallatin school where she planned to major in an individualized study of creative and dramatic writing.

she loved her freshman year of college. she was finally out of her parents’ home and into a postage stamp of an apartment with an eccentric girl studying theater. she was around people from all over the world and all walks of life instead of the tiny bubble of rich snobs and private schools. she was around people she actually had things in common with. she was still shy and she still found it extremely difficult to talk to people. the easiest way for her to interact with people was to overcompensate for her shyness and be excessively friendly. when she was actually able to talk, she found she had many things to say, and once she started talking it was hard for her to stop.

her roommate was a big fan of movie marathons (in october they watched all of the scream movies, and then all of the saw movies, and then all of the children of the corn movies. that’s twenty horror movies. gio still has nightmares from them). for a few weeks in the fall she had a spy movie marathon. mission: impossible and jason bourne movies, mostly. something about them piqued gio’s interest, and she started reading spy novels, which quickly turned into her writing one of her own. she wanted the protagonist to be a woman for once, and one who’s main personality trait wasn’t tits. her novel, at dawn beneath the bridge of sighs, followed a cia operative and an italia aisi agent who are forced to work together to find the kidnapped daughter of an american diplomat along with the priceless jewelry she was wearing at the time of her capture. (do i know what the fuck im talking about? no!!) 

gio comes from a family of publishers so it was fairly easy for her to find someone who wanted to publish it, but the nepotism ended there, the success was all her own. it was lauded as an impressive debut novel and critics praised her subversion of genre tropes and inventive action sequences. but it stuck out to a select few for a different reason - the heroine used tactics uncannily similar to those used by actual spies, and she used them well. some people were curious as to how the character would handle other situations in the spy world, or really how the author would plan it.

so yeah she got a letter from gallagher, and she thought it was a joke at first. she eventually figured out it was very real (how? idk!) and her curiosity got the better of her. she decided it would be good for research, and that she could go back to nyu if she wanted to. once she arrived at gallagher, giorgia... did not know what to do. she had never been so out of her element, and she felt like she was terrible at everything. but that wasn’t really true, all the things you could study for were things she was actually learning. she became determined to actually do well, and as her first year comes to an end, gio still feels extremely unsure of herself, and unsure of where she wants to focus her studies, but she’s starting to feel like gallagher is the right place for her to be.

personality: she’s very sweet, very earnest, sometimes has a tendency to retreat into herself and get quiet, but she still combats her shyness with an outgoing attitude she learned from her mother that takes her far out of her comfort zone. basically as outgoing as an introvert can be. she tries to see the best in everyone and every situation. emphasis on tries, because she’s a total worrier and is often pulled between the desire to find a silver lining and the fear that something horrible will happen. she will give people more chances than they deserve and let them walk all over her. her self esteem can be pretty low, but one thing she is confident about is her writing (although she won’t tell you because she doesn’t want to seem boastful). art and literature in all forms are her favorite things and she could talk about it forever. she’s the kind of person who tries to learn everyone’s names and once she knows it she’ll say hi to you every time she sees you.

other stuff: she’s fluent in french and english and grew up speaking them equally. (she also knows some spanish, italian, german, and russian from her nannies, but she’s not fluent). she has a deep love for photography, usually bringing a camera with her at all times. she can play classic violin and piano, but hasn’t in a while and is probably rusty, she continued to dance until she came to gallagher and no longer had time to practice. she has a cat named pierre (named after pierre-auguste renoir). she's a vegetarian. she’s basically addicted to fruit. she listens to a lot of sad pop music. her favorite colors are blush pink and forest green. she watches a lot jean-luc godard and wes anderson movies. she’s kind of a sad girl/art ho. she gets crushes on people easily and all the time. she is very impressionable, and seems to experience heartbreak often. she just wants someone to lover her for her, you know?

NFHS, NIAAA to Hold 51st National Athletic Directors Conference in Virtual Format

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (October 13, 2020) — The annual National Athletic Directors Conference (NADC), co-sponsored by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA), will be conducted in a virtual format Monday, December 7, through Monday, December 14. The conference will take place virtually for the first time in its 51-year history in lieu of the in-person event originally set for Tampa, Florida.

Although adapting the conference to the virtual realm is far from ideal, and the loss of live human interaction cannot be remedied, the leaders of the two organizations said there are some benefits to a virtual event that would not be available with the standard conference. Streaming workshops, meetings and exhibit show sessions online will allow them to be viewed by a much larger audience – an audience that will also be able to watch any session on-demand.

“We’re looking at it as an opportunity to reach out to individuals who perhaps have never experienced the NADC before and this can serve as an introduction for them,” said Mike Blackburn, executive director of the NIAAA. “We can provide members with an opportunity to take part without traveling. The other aspect of it is that the sessions within our virtual national conference will be recorded. So, even though this is occurring without athletic administrators on-site, they may be continuing to work in their schools and school districts. And if they miss a portion of it due to responsibilities, they can go back and take that in. We are thankful for technology that allows for this outreach to directors of athletics.”

“We are thrilled and grateful to help provide this professional development opportunity for our country’s athletic directors,” said Karissa Niehoff, NFHS executive director. “With everything we all have been through with regard to the pandemic, we felt it was imperative we make this event happen in some capacity. We wanted to give athletic administrators a chance to improve their craft, and to learn valuable techniques for navigating the unprecedented challenges they face currently.”

In addition to being moved online, the conference has been expanded from its typical five-day schedule to an eight-day slate that will include four days of NIAAA leadership training courses to begin the festivities.

“We’ve taken a normal, five-day on-site conference and have adjusted it to try to keep all of the aspects of the conference in place that we can,” Blackburn said. “We have added four days of leadership training courses at the beginning, so, on those days, there will be 12 courses taught for our athletic administrators to participate in.”

During the opening four-day stretch of virtual leadership training courses presented by the NIAAA Leadership Training Institute, one 900-level course will be taught each day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST – LTC 901, LTC 902, LTC 903 and LTC 904, respectively – while four different combinations of 500-, 600- and 700-level courses will be showcased from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Attendee Orientation Session will kick off the second phase of the conference at 2 p.m. Friday, December 11, followed by the first of six hour-long workshop sessions that will be held throughout the final four days of the NADC.

At 5 p.m. on Friday, December 11, Tony Dungy will be featured as the conference’s Opening General Session speaker. A former National Football League (NFL) player and coach with 31 total seasons of experience, Dungy is now an analyst for NBC’s Football Night in America, as well as a spokesman for All-Pro Dad, a national fatherhood program. In 13 seasons as an NFL head coach, Dungy posted a 139-69 career record and made the postseason 10 times, culminating with a victory in Super Bowl XLI as the coach of the Indianapolis Colts in 2007. In 2010, following his retirement, the Colts organization added Dungy to its Ring of Honor.

In addition to his storied NFL career, Dungy has authored six books, including “Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices, and Priorities of a Winning Life,” which sold more than 1 million print copies and reached No. 1 in the hardcover nonfiction section of The New York Times Best Seller list. Dungy previously served on the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation as an appointee of George W. Bush and has been active with many community service organizations in the Indianapolis and Tampa Bay areas; among them are the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Athletes in Action and the Basket of Hope program at Indianapolis’ Riley Hospital for Children.

Derrick Brooks will conclude the 2020 NADC as the speaker for the Closing General Session at 4:20 p.m. on December 14. One of the greatest high school football players in Florida history, Brooks was named 1990 National Defensive Player of the Year and to multiple all-America teams as a star linebacker at Booker T. Washington High School in Pensacola. Those accolades earned him a place in the NFHS’ National High School Hall of Fame in 2019, the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Hall of Fame in 2015 and to the FHSAA All-Century Team. A shining example of a student-athlete, Brooks went on to be a three-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) First Team selection, two-time consensus All-American and a two-time Academic All-American at Florida State University, a resume that later earned him an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

Toward the end of his outstanding 14-year National Football League (NFL) career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – one that saw him named to six NFL All-Pro teams, 2002 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and a champion of Super Bowl XXXVII – Brooks realized a lifelong dream in 2007 when he partnered with Eddie DeBartolo to open Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School in North Tampa. Since retiring from the NFL, Brooks has made it his life’s mission to positively impact the lives of young people in the Tampa Bay area.

But the usual seasonal flu and acute respiratory infections in Russia are affected annually by an average of 37 million people, i.e. about one in four residents of the country.

9 thousand people died from complications of the super-dangerous and mega-dangerous coronavirus in three months.

The most dangerous complication is manifested in the form of pneumonia.

But here's what the academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences chief pulmonologist of Russia Alexander Chuchalin says about pneumonia:

"Every year in Russia, more than a million people carry pneumonia. However, only 500-600 thousand people are diagnosed; the rest learn about the disease only in connection with the development of complications. And the mortality rate for this disease reaches 12%."

Friends, as they say, compare the scale.

At the moment, about 150 people are infected with coronovirus in Russia.

The mortality rate from coronavirus is highly dependent on the average age of the population and is comparable to the mortality rate from regular seasonal flu, i.e. 1-4%.

And at the same time, 1 million people in Russia suffer from pneumonia every year, the death rate from which reaches 12%.

But that's not all.

The 2020 coronavirus has an interesting feature. Children, teenagers, and pregnant women carry it without symptoms, I.e. they do not even notice that they have been infected with this virus.

The usual seasonal flu works the opposite way – it is dangerous just for children, teenagers and pregnant women.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said a week ago: "from 60 to 70% of German residents will be infected with coronavirus."

But German health Minister Jens Spahn immediately clarified: "80% of those infected will pass through the epidemic with virtually no symptoms."

But if the disease passes without symptoms – sneezed once and went on - what kind of "pandemic"is it?

This is not a pandemic, but a mild seasonal ARI.

And yet, we are seeing unprecedented measures around the world.

They close borders, let school children go on vacation, send workers to work remotely, and close them for a two-week quarantine for visiting a European or Asian country.

And what conclusion can be drawn from all this?

And the conclusion is very simple.

We are present at a big performance on artificially inflating panic from an insignificant cause.

Every major global player solves their own problems at this performance.

For example, China is actively buying up collapsed shares of enterprises that belonged to Western companies but are located in China. In addition, months of protests in Hong Kong ended immediately. China has shown the world the effectiveness of its medical services and now sends its doctors to train colleagues from Europe.

The US is at the peak of the election campaign, Donald trump is fighting for re-election and therefore, as a General on the battlefield, is leading the fight against a "terrible epidemic". This gave him the opportunity to announce the abolition of the payroll tax and turn on the printing press.

The leaders of the European Union, which lost a significant share of the budget after the UK's exit, found a good reason to reduce funding for freeloading countries from southern and Eastern Europe.

Russia also benefits from this "pandemic" – millions of citizens will not go abroad, which means they will spend their money within the country. In addition, the closure of borders is a powerful push to import substitution in a variety of industries. And, of course, the plus is that good funding has gone into medicine. New hospitals are being hastily built, equipment is being purchased, research is being conducted, and so on.

There is also a global benefit from this "pandemic".

As we remember from school, capitalism as a whole is characterized by crises of overproduction. This is a state of the market when there are so many products that the price of them falls sharply, and at some point it becomes more profitable to not sell them for a penny, but simply destroy them.

By the beginning of the "pandemic" capitalist countries just came to this line – a terrible overstocking.

There were a lot of goods and sellers, and buyers were not in a hurry to buy something.

And that's when the "pandemic" appears, and products begin to be swept off the shelves of supermarkets.

The Internet is full of photos of empty shelves from stores in various countries.

What used to be a dead weight on the shelves and warehouses, now bought, Packed and lies in the homes of customers who are happy to successfully purchase another kilogram of toilet paper.

Friends, this "pandemic" benefits everyone!

But it has nothing to do with medicine.

These are big political games of big uncles in good suits.

⌠ CODY FERN, 32, MALE, HE/HIM⌡ welcome back to gallagher academy, CECIL LEFEBVRE! originally hailing from BLACKTHORNE, this alum specializes in COVERT OPERATIONS (CP). when i see them walking around in the halls, i usually see a flash of (artistic lighting when the sunrays sneak through the curtains, a forgotten holy rosary at the back of a drawer, waking up to red sirens after a vivid nightmare, a mask seller at the end of a dark alley, ichor instead of tears).  it’s the (scorpio)’s birthday on 10/23/1988, and when they were still in school their most requested dish was GARLIC TROUT from the school’s chefs. hopefully their presence can help ease the minds of gallagher students.

Cecil is the oldest Lefebvre sibling... by far! While Leo and Bellamy are only separated by a year, there’s an eight and nine year gap between him and his baby siblings and far from being distant with each other, Cecil loved his gremlins more than anything else in the world.    But love had no room in the Lefebvre household.

Growing up as the first-born was never an easy task and his parents and grandfather let him know that since he was very young. Trained and educated since he was just a child to become the heir of the family and the next great assassin and spy.

                                             AND HE DID.

The harsh training and strict conditions, modeled him into everything his father and grandfather ever wanted, except for one insignificant detail: his heart. You see, even though he grew up with a gun in his hand, his mother filled him with love. She taught him kindness and games, she was a bright light shining through his father’s shadow and with her everything was peachy, even when Leo was born, but a couple of years afterwards due the command of the father, their woman had to drop most of her affection, because assassins had no use for that.

Still, even with this situation, the mother talked to Cecil and made him promise to never leave his siblings unguarded, which he promised and even against his father’s decisions, Cecil never flaked to put the face in front of the fist for Leo and Bellamy and he would sneak into their rooms to tell them bedtime stories and play games in silence with both. What a joy it was when the man wasn’t home and they could relax for a bit under the shadow of the trees.

Time goes by and while in Blackthorne, Cecil never lost communication with his family, but as soon as he is done, he has little time to spend with them or even write. The job doesn’t allow it. He works for the government and whatever organization needed him so he barely has a chance to be home. Then it happens, he receives a message that changes everything:    HIS MOTHER IS DEAD.

Cecil’s world attempts to crumble down, but while it resists, his psyche crashes down. He doesn’t even have to ask what happened, he doesn’t even wonder how, he just knows. He knows his father and his family orchestrated it. The woman probably tried to leave or some big disagreement was the last straw and they got rid of her.

It is decided, this family and its brutal traditions have to end so he starts planning it out, but the heart he never learned to control betrays him once again and he speaks a little too much to the wrong people and soon enough, another assassin gets to him.    One single shot to the heart.    But never send a regular assassin to kill someone you trained yourself, daddy. Never.

Cecil survives, reacting less than a second ahead, avoiding by millimeters the organ. He takes time to recover, he goes into hiding, taking the identity of a priest in a lost rural town in Romania; he even gets comfortable in that life; people are simple and good and this kind of life is actually rewarding, maybe... maybe he could play along, pretend he is dead and move on with his new life, but then the news ( please, give him a break ). Blackthorne is going broke, might stand another semester.

His mind go back to Leo and Bellamy and no, no more. The Lefebvre tyranny has to end and so, he packs his things and goes back into training. His moral compass is twisted, affected by younger years of brutal training, the death of his mother and solitude. The ptsd of firearms is HIGH, but he has to play pretend, just like he has all his life, because no assassin is useful when he is afraid of guns.

Blackthorne finally goes broke and most of the students are absorbed by Gallagher. That’s it. He’s going. So he applies for Gallagher thinking they might be too stupid to accept a teacher from--- oh, they did. Excellent. So he is in the spy school mostly for his siblings, decided to finish the rest of the Lefebvres and rescue Leo and Bellamy in the process.     No matter the cost.

Personality

Originally of cold and even emotionless mood, Cecil is highly-educated and unnecessarily blunt sometimes. Most likely to have vodka instead of water or coffee in his thermos bottle. Always tired and annoyed. Eyeroll master. If he teases you, he likes you. Think a bit of Aizawa in My Hero Academia if you ever watched it: strict, stern, but secretly would give his life for his students. Not as apathetic, actually will help you with extra sessions if he sees you’re struggling. Weird person, excellent mentor. Super soft for Bellamy and Leo, but not during class. Secretly cries with romance novels and animal videos. Still an assassin, it is in his genes and can get the job done when needed.
