k, so i think at this point everyone knows that m is actually like. super. depressed and even if he was holding his facade of "oooh im evil im so cold and malevolent and i don't feel anything" pretty good until all stars he kind of crumbles down after that.

I believe that before anything on the mod happened, when M saw beta he saw himself reflected on him. He would had been in the same state by then if he wasn't moved by his desires of revenge. And it hurted to see, he wanted to see this person that he understood, that he could identify with do better than him. He still had a chance, he lost his 30 years ago. But he couldn't say that! No, how dare you suggest such a thing? So, trying to be as nonchalant as he could he slowly starts giving him pats on the back, maybe another on the head, whispering something positive to keep him going. Little gestures that could help getting his hopes up. Maybe even with a slight intention of talking, but dissapearing before doing that — in his eyes — stupid decision.

On the other side, Beta appreciates the intention. It doesn't help much, but its the tought that counts. For one, it was weird seeing this "Mario" doing these things, at least in his eyes, where he tought he should be punished for being a failure. Yet, he starts to slowly warm up, maybe even gifting him little smiles every once in a while.

And after some time they realize they somehow consider eachother a friend. No, they don't know if they could say close — They have barely talked anyways. But they appreciate eachother, and that's enough.
