Apologies for rambling, but I can't stop thinking about the function of the mandrakes and whether or not a deaf person or silencing magic or etc. would actually be more effective.

So in chapter 4 the only information regarding the function of the mandrake's scream is that when heard you will go insane and/or die. This leaves two options for how the scream works:

A) it's a magical effect/spell from the mandrake

B) the mandrake screams at a fatal decibel level

Option A would leave the door open for any solution that blocks out the sound itself. Mandrakes are also stated to be able to contain a high level of mana. However, I personally dislike this option because it feels very hand-wavy and it doesn't explain why no one has tried that method.

Option B, imo, feels like it fits Ryoko Kui's style of very grounded and plausible explanations with light fantasy dressing, whether she thought about it or not. Here's a link to a thread giving a probably better explanation than I can give as I'm definitely not an expert at sound but I'm gonna try my best lol

So above or below decibel(dB) amount of loudness, sound can become fatal. The frequency of the sound would then give us the "insanity" portion of the mandrakes scream as sounds below 20 and above 85hz can be physically and mentally dangerous.

Based on the characters discussions and Marcille's reaction to hearing some of the mandrake's scream, it seems like it would most likely be a low frequency high dB scream, as it can cause anxiety, nausea, and can affect the cardiovascular system, but would still produce an audible sound. If this were the case, then it would still affect you whether or not you were able to hear the scream, as the vibration sound waves in the air and in your body are what will harm you.

The main issue I have with B is that the sound waves would affect you at a much further distance than we see in the chapter, but I suppose it would be a disappointing story if everyone died in chapter 4 lol

Is there any reason you have to use dogs to harvest mandrake roots? Can't you just pay someone to come in the dungeon with you and harvest them then revive them when the scream kills them?

No reason they even point out how silly it is

The reason not to use a person and then revive them is the usual dangers of resurrection plus I don't think it's a pleasant experience. Wouldn't be worth it to die and be resurrected for each mandrake you harvest

The Magician’s Protegee

Both of these stories are near and dear to my heart. Due to life obligations like school in the past, work, convention/merch schedules, I unfortunately haven’t progressed in these stories as I would have liked over the years. My dream is to one day create stories that impact people, as other people’s stories have changed me.

LOST AND FOUND CHILDREN

Synopsis: A search for their missing parents lead twins Flynn and Nate to fall into a deep darkness, unraveling secrets about their family and the country they once trusted.

Lost and Found Children is a story about mystery, overcoming trauma, blood family vs found family, the fear of growing up even in adulthood, the fear that you are not who you wished to grow up to be. The characters explore their identities in a post-war torn society, and witness their love being tested in that wildly changing world.

The story explores the horrors of war, and is also a study on the horrors of child abuse and when child rearing is left in the wrong hands, which can have devastating lifelong consequences. More importantly, it is a story about how love persists despite all odds.

Fun trivia:

The story has changed settings many times, from a tragic Victorian familial drama, to a modern school mystery, a 1920s crime drama, now it’s a historical fantasy.

This is a story I’ve been writing since I was 13 years old. The current iteration is from 2019, and I started revamping it as part of a school project. As it is a very old story that I literally grew up with, revamping it seriously has been a huge task, finding difficulty in deciding whether I should remove, keep, or add things like themes and characters. As of right now, a number of characters are still very much unrefined!

Flynn and Nate are not actually my oldest OCs.

Inspirations:

Growing up, I consumed a lot of Japanese media, and I mix what I learn from real world history with series that have impacted me a lot, like Fullmetal Alchemist, Pandora Hearts, Violet Evergarden. I draw influences from these periods: the industrial revolution in England & the west, late 1800s England, and early 20th century American history, especially the interwar period.

For the character designs, I'm inspired by historical fashion and JRPG aesthetics. My aim is to design them more simply and more humbly (a la Ryoko Kui style), but I still try for a whimsical old world look, bordering on fantastical. I do want a bit more steampunk look to my story moving forward, and that's an aesthetic I need to experiment with and study in my artwork a lot more often.

THE MAGICIAN’S PROTEGEE

Synopsis: In a distant, idyllic future where robots and humans coexist - a healthcare android lives day to day with his adoptive daughter, patients, and their ragtag android and human friends.

The story is a light-hearted, slow-paced, slice of life series - but it will also deal with complex topics like artificial intelligence, existentialism, and the fear of outliving the people you care about the most. THE MAGICIAN'S PROTEGEE IS UNDER HIATUS. (as of Nov 2023)

Fun trivia:

This story used to be about the Victorian occult (hence the title), also about a doctor who saves people from the ghouls that plagued Victorian society. However, without a greater purpose to the story, and only using the setting as a cool backdrop, it was a "monster of the week" series that I didn’t have any interest in writing. I scrapped the Victorian setting, in favour of writing a fantasy world I could fully have control of. It’s very different from LaFC, but it’s also a story I wish to tell from my heart. LaFC is like, the moody night story, and TMP is the sunny day story.

The current iteration is from 2020, also developed for a school project. As I was much older (than 13 haha) when creating this series, I had a pretty clear image of the story and its themes compared to writing LaFC.

Inspirations:

The inspiration for the world building comes from series like Eureka Seven, Kino's Journey, and Aria (Kozue Amano). I also draw a lot of inspiration for world building and writing from American post WWII/cold war society and culture, especially the boom in science fiction and spy fiction. I also take inspiration from early-mid 20th century Hong Kong, China, and Japan for worldbuilding and setting - their visual motifs, response to western technology and changing attitudes and culture.

Hastur and Arthur's situation is similar to Junko and Ryoko. Fiona is the person who thought she was being above the game but is sacrificed before the real game starts (Mukuro). Luchino is the weird paranoid member who hides a terrible secret (Touko and Jack), Eli is the person who sees the future but nobody believes despite being right and is seen as a greedy hypocrite (Yasuhiro) Demi is the Sunny Girl who hides a more aggressive side and has a connection to a "special" drink whose reason given for participating is her brother (Aoi), Martha is the mysterious law-abiding girl who seems to know more than she lets on that after so many secrets is discredited by the group when saying the truth, in the end she is just as confused as the others. OKAY SO SOME CONTEXT so you actually know what im going on about

the au is basically just me shoving yttd characters into the storyline of omori if you don't remember

the main characters are as follows:

kanna = sunny/omori

shin = basil

kugie = mari

ryoko = hero

joe = kel

sara = aubrey

and some things to note: ryoko and kugie were dating, the same as hero and mari. ryoko and joe are not siblings in this au!!! because. that feels icky considering they literally date in yttd. they just share a close friendship instead. also shin is still an adult in this au so.... go away weirdos please.

the official name for this au is canna (i think... LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS) because it's like kanna obviously but it's a flower, and flowers will be a main theme in this au (she is a human flower after all.... :)) but i'll also refer to it as kanna goes outside which i have affectionately dubbed it also :3

WIP Wednesday Game

Her mama went to the store, and Ryoko told her it would rain, and her mama didn’t believe her.  It was sunny!  And bright!  No cloud in the sky, not even those thin wispy white ones!  And no breeze!

But Ryoko knew.  Ryoko knew it was going to rain, knew it deep in her bones, the way that fairies in the old stories do.  So she told her mama it was going to rain.  Told her to take an umbrella.  Told her to wear the good boots.  Knew that when her mama took neither that she would get her shoes stuck in the mud on the walk back, knew that she would stumble and fall, knew that her bag of eggs wouldn’t drop, but would fall flat, the eggs cracking and breaking in the mud.

Knew just when her mama would be back – who she talked to, who she bought from, how many eggs, how many other things they don’t need but her mama won’t resist being able to buy while she’s out, even though Ryoko’s keeping an eye on the oven – and despite the fact that her mama wanted her to stay in the house, she didn’t.

She caught her mama just at the entry gate.  She kept her from falling.

(Her mama was upset with her until she found that Ryoko already pulled the dish from the oven, safe and sound.  Then her mama was concerned because Ryoko’s too young to be doing something like that.)

((Memories are weird.  How can she remember that drip of blood on the edge of Mukie’s blade with such startling detail, but she can’t remember what her mama was cooking?  Who knows.))

i have three whole YTTD AUs and an Omori AU all in my brain and i want to talk about them grhrgrgrgrgrgr

basic summaries

Trialswitch (YTTD) - An AU that takes away the "balancing" part of the death game, leaving Nao, Mishima, and Kugie out of the game. Shin gets a completely different first trial and stays his true self, and in fact develops to be stronger and more confident throughout the story. Sara's first trial was to kill Ryoko to survive, or die to save her life. She ultimately kills Ryoko in a panic and becomes distraught and traumatized from this trial. She gets worse before she gets better. If possible, I'd want to make this into a fangame.

Deathswitch (YTTD) - A "storyshift-like" YTTD AU that shifts character roles (excluding Sara, the protagonist) around in pairs, without changing original personalities. Sara dies in the original YTTD timeline, then wakes up at her desk like before the Death Game started, unaware she's in a different world. She retains memories of the previous world, but nothing from the death game besides vague, blurry bits and pieces. She also gains memories of her past in the new world she's in when interacting with certain people. I am in the process of turning this into a story!

YTTSwap: Death Game by Swap AU (YTTD) - or Zaire's Your Turn to Swap since I'm not the only one with a basic YTTD swap au. What you see is what you get - characters swap with each other and things change because of it. All blood relations remain intact in this. Meister, Mr. Chidouin, and the Memorandum Man are all the same guy. I have a lot of doodles n shit for this AU actually due to how important design change is to it. Might make this into a sprite comic in the future if I'm feeling silly.

ISOLI (OMORI) - This is a fun one!!! "Isoli" comes from the german word for isolate, isolieren. In ISOLI, the emotion bosses (and Mikal lmao) swap with Sunny's real friends! Biscuit <--> Mari, Doughie <--> Hero, Basil <--> Mikhael, Aubrey <--> Spaceboy, and Kel <--> Sweetheart. Mari and Hero are magic healers cursed to aid people for all eternity without breaks, Basil is just a little guy in the park, Aubrey is a rogue, and Kel is a basketball star alien! Meanwhile Captain Spaceboy, Sweetheart, and Biscuit are now Charlie, Stephanie, and Bowen. Doughie is still Doughie and uses they/them pronouns. Sunny was adopted into Doughie and Bowen's family when he was just a baby.
