Trick or treat! Is there anything with Zak in your WIPs? (Halloween should be frightening afterall)
hahaha the human horrorshow that is zak brown 💀
i did start writing some rancid sugar daddy style zak/lando ages ago but only got three paragraphs into it before losing interest. maybe i’ll go back to it at some point. theyre not a very exciting three paragraphs but regardless they are under the cut!! ty anon 🫡
People think Lando’s dumb, but he knows a lot about the things that matter. He knows about power, how to smell it on someone’s skin, like talc dusted into the folds of their clothes, and he knows how to make powerful people like him. He knows how to smile in a way that adds an extra layer to whatever he’s saying, like a secret message for only one recipient.
And he knows about timing, which is why he waits until summer break to give in to Zak’s increasingly heavy hinting. Because he’s known about it for a long time. That’s another thing he’s good at: knowing when someone wants to fuck him. Less so whether it’s a good idea to take them up on the offer, sometimes. With Zak, though, he’d known exactly what to do, and when. Carried the possibility in his back pocket like a treat he’d take out and dangle in front of a dog’s nose to catch its attention when it threatened to stray. But Lando’s not stupid; tease a dog too long, he knows, and it’s liable to bite.
Zak’s managed to pull a few strings to get Ian and Justin down to Sunningdale for the day. It’s pretty cool, even though Lando does feel a bit like a kid out on a trip with his uncles. The socks don’t help with that, but they’d made Zak chortle, given him an excuse to stare at Lando’s tan calves.

The Peculiar Vanishing of Dame Agatha Christie, Mystery Author
If you at all enjoy the genres of mystery and detective fiction, you not only have heard tell of Dame Agatha Christie—you very likely worship her. Particularly fascinating for us, as disciples of all things dark and dastardly, are strange happenings befitting of mystery's foremost authors located within the annals of their own lives.
If you share this proclivity, then do travel back with us to the year 1926, when Agatha Christie, Mistress of Mystery and Queen of Crime, vanished into what is known colloquially as "thin air."
Christie and her first husband, Archibald (or "Archie"), shared a famously troubled union. By 1926, they had been wed for twelve years, and Archie, then thirty-seven, had requested a divorce from Christie while engaging in an affair with his secretary, a twenty-five-year-old woman named Nancy Neele. On the night of December 3, Archie departed the couple's Sunningdale home, intent on spending the evening with friendsand, very likely, his mistress—while leaving his wife behind. Following a quarrel and Archie's subsequent departure, Christie, too, left the home, placing the couple's young daughter in the care of their maid.
No hint of Christie's whereabouts was established until the following morning, when her car was discovered in some brush along a Surrey road, abandoned. The contents were thus: A suitcase placed in the back seat; with it, a fur coat; and elsewhere in the vehicle, Christie's driving license. The headlights were still illuminated.
According to a contemporaneous police report from deputy chief constable William Kenward, "The car was found in such a position as to indicate that some unusual proceeding had taken place, the Car being found half-way down a grassy slope well off the main road with its bonnet buried in some bushes, as if it had got out of control."
This peculiar set of circumstances led many to suspect foul play had befallen the mystery author, and the media soon took particular interest in the story. As is common in cases of missing women, many members of the public began to suspect her husband, Archie, of wrongdoing, while others surmised the whole matter was a publicity stunt. Even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, sought the aid of a spiritual medium to ascertain Christie's whereabouts.
Why might Christie have left her house the night of December 3, only to seemingly abandon her car approximately fifteen miles away? Where had she gone, and did she plan to return? Under what circumstances, an anxious public wondered, might she be found?

the wessexes have an apartment at bagshot not the whole house and there are other tenants including businesses in the outbuildings. Crown estates runs bagshot its not the same situation as Andy at Windsor lodge. And Louise's ponies are at Windsor castle stables with other horses. So unless kC is getting rid of all those horses, firing the stable staff and shutting the stables down how are those two ponies costing him so much? Andrew's agreement isn't with KC either its with crown estates which kc doesn't run. I am skeptical bout these stories.
Anon, you contradict yourself regarding Andrew and you're wrong about the Wessexes having an apartment.
The Wessexes have the Mansion House, Sunningdale Lodge, and a block of stables. They have a 150 year lease, and have no commercial farmland or woodland, and thus no way of making money from their property as it's closed to the public. While the only official duchys are Lancaster and Cornwall, many aristos have land and property they can make money off to "pay for" their dukedom. The Wessexes have no such thing, so my anon yesterday speculating about the £ aspect are correct. (Although it should be noted that Edward did pay over £1mil for renovations, so they're not hard up.)
People need to get over the ponies. If it's the case that Charles wants them out of Windsors, the Wessexes have stables at Bagshot they can house the ponies in. Charles is not responsible for Louise's ponies. Even if he does keep them in his stables, he's not responsible for their training, their grooms, their feeding, their care, etc. The Wessexes can afford it and should be paying for it!
As with Andrew, you're right that his lease isn't with Charles but with the Crown Estate. The point is that part of his lease is that Andrew will maintain Royal Lodge from his own funds, and if Charles takes away his £250k allowance, he can't afford the maintenance. Therefore he's in breach of his lease and they will mutually terminate it and he will have to move out.

Your monarch(s) is given two options, hand the throne over to another noble family or abolish the monarchy all together. Which do they choose?
What an excellent ask, Sarah!
Let’s be real, for Louis the answer would be obvious. I personally think most monarchs would rather live in a monarchy headed by someone they know to have the same class interests as them rather then a republic, where they could be killed/imprisoned or at least treated poorly by the state as a former monarch. There’s no other solidarity than class solidarity.
Sure, let’s say Louis hands over the throne to another noble family. It just so happens he and his family are closely related to several dozen. Through Louis’s mother, he is related to the Rothmans, through which he and his brother are last surviving male descendants. Through his grandmother, he’s related to the Sunningdale Dukes and the Blairs of Westgate. Through his great-grandmother? The grossly wealthy Merivale Earldom. Through his great-great-grandmother? Decedents of the Russian Imperial Family. It would probably continue like that all the way up Louis’s family line. At the very least, the throne would go to a distant cousin, best case scenario the crown would just revert back to him or someone so closely related to him there’d be no difference.
This doesn’t even count the families Louis’s wife and children-in-law come from. Irene’s family is extremely wealthy and powerful in their own right. In a world where the throne passed to Tatiana’s family, there is no way in hell they wouldn’t just all abdicate or exclude certain members in order to ensure their nephew/cousin Nicholas still becomes king. Same with Irene’s family, if Louis can’t be king their king is Nicholas. Period. Doesn't matter if Nicholas is doing it as a Warwick or a Fransworth or a Wynne.
Herein lies the main issue with nobility in Sunderland: they’re obsolete and they know it. They’re slowly being replaced by those with new money and their stately estates are unsustainable and unaffordable. Any power or relevance they have is derived from the Warwicks and their proximity to the royals via blood or friendly relations. They’re all extremely loyal to Louis and their survival depends on him. They’re more deferential to him than a commoner off the streets would be because again: similar interests and connections. Louis honestly would maintain a great deal of influence even if he wasn’t king.
Ah, gotta love that class solidarity.

19-20 August 2023
I kicked off my birthday “weekend” by celebrating my previous birthday, as I had an outstanding birthday present to cash in! It was an unusual one – an alpaca walk with my sister – which had been postponed a few times due to #life, but the 363-day wait was well worth it!
We met up at Abbots View Farm and were greeted by a friendly pair of staff members, who gave us and about ten other people a brief lowdown on safety & etiquette before handing us the reins to an alpaca apiece; I opted for Sir Keith (née Sir Kicks-a-Lot) and Hannah took charge of Freckle. We all followed the leader around the farm at a very leisurely pace; alpacas will not be rushed, so what is normally a 15-minute walk at most lasted about 45 minutes. But that was part of the fun – we had plenty of time to ask questions about our walking buddies and give them some pats/strokes. Sir Keith was completely chilled the whole way round (hence his rebrand), and once we all bimbled back to the starting point, we fed some more alpacas and a few ducks, said hello to the pigs and goats, and enjoyed a complimentary lil’ cake in the barn before returning to mine.
We weren’t quite alpaca’d out, so after we’d played some quizzes and jammed to some music we revisited an underrated Disney film from our childhood - The Emperor’s New Groove – and enjoyed the irreverent, fourth-wall breaking silliness. I also got Hannah re-hooked on another throwback from yesteryear, a puzzle game called Hexic (on the Xbox) that I think she’d quite happily still be playing if we didn't have things to do the following day:
We drove to Sunningdale to see Mum, Helen and Granny for a shared birthday celebration for me and Mum: as well as the sparkling company, there was great food, a few gifts, and some excellent games on offer.
The “Tennis Bin Challenge” made a much anticipated return - I managed an appropriate score of 21 and even Granny had a go! However, the undeniable standout of the day was Helen’s “Fun With Flags” game, which required us to draw flags for countries that began with each letter of S/U/E/B/E/N, with each one scored out of 5 based on accuracy + degree of difficulty! Needless to say I was in my element, and although I didn’t achieve a perfect 5 on any of my drawings, my position as resident flag nerd remains firmly intact. That may be my favourite gift I received!

As the credit bureaus computerized their processes and greatly expanded their reach and influence in the late 1960s and early 1970s, consumer complaints began to pile up at the FTC and state attorney generals’ offices. The credit reporting agencies quickly became huge bureaucracies second only in size to the federal government. We return to 5 Founder's Square, which since Zoey has moved out, is now the Ellis Household.
It's been a fortnight since the the wedding and Tyler has knuckled down with his career, trying to establish all the business connections in a timely and cost-effective manner.
When he's not been sat hunched intensely over his laptop, he's been popping over to Zoey's house, mostly when she was at work to see his daughter, always in the presence of Deidre.
Being quite an intelligent (excluding his love life choices) individual himself, he sensed something off about the woman who was now their daughter's nanny. He didn't think she was about to commit a crime but he worried that Deidre herself wasn't content, as much as she tried to be.
But as he was only there for a few hours every other day, he wasn't sure he was in the right boat to judge how he felt about her.
Zoey hadn't said anything to him about it and no red flags had been raised.
Either way he'd spent the past two days straight at Zoey's as he had a a long week ahead of him and he wasn't going to see Madeleine much in the meanwhile.
He was proud to be her father and he was happy that his insecurities about being a father weren't overwhelming him like they did when Zoey was pregnant.
But he was determined to take each day as it comes.
Just then the phone rang and he huffed impatiently, annoyed that he'd been interrupted, regardless of who was on the other end of the phone.
"Hello?"
(…)
"Harry, did you secure that deal with the executive board?"
(…)
"Why the heck not?!"
(…)
"Seriously? That was their excuse?!"
"Hmm, we need another plan to progress forward. They have no power to overthrow all the blood, sweat and tears we've put into this plan."
(…)
"Who are they to suggest who isn't a proper candidate for a partnership?! It's not their city, but our town, Althea's choice here that matters!"
(…)
"Yes, I'm well aware of that mate but Althea was adamant. Sunningdale Fields will become our first major district to pair with the town. No arguments and I doubt they'd want Althea to come over there and tell them herself. She's a very busy woman without this bullshit. It's why she's employed us to manage this for her!"

I laid awake last night thinking about this, so rather than let it stew in my brain I figured I’d get it out here...
So way back when, a fanfic was posted that was one of the first real long form fics I’d ever read. Lots of folks in the Romy fandom likely know it: Giddy by Seven Sunningdale.
It was removed from ff.net years ago, but it was one of those stories that sucked you in while you waited with bated breath for the next chapter to be posted.
And the ending... my god. The ending WRECKED me. Anyone that’s read it knows what I’m talking about. Completely blindsided me at the time.
Thankfully there was a super long sequel that I’m pretty sure set things to rights, but it’s been so long I can barely remember.
Why am I talking about this now? Because Giddy has reappeared.
It’s on Ao3, not shared by the original author (which does give me pause, but that’s a topic for another day) and when I saw it I nearly dropped my tablet. How long had it been since I’d seen this fic? Ten years? Fifteen? I only know that I originally read it something like 20 years ago and had long been a favourite.
Which is why I stayed up until 2am trying to finish it in one sitting. I’m older, slightly wiser, than I was when I originally read it, and I can look at it with a more critical eye now, but honestly? It’s held up pretty well.
I didn’t finish it in one sitting, but after I put my tablet down I didn’t sleep right away. All I could think about was how many of these novel-length fanfics exist and impacted my own writing and fandom experience. This fanfic was one of the stories that I’d go back and read over and over until it was removed and I no longer could.
Having now finished it for the first time in I don’t know how many years has me chomping at the bit for the sequel to be reposted (Anonymous poster says they will share the sequel soon).
Having been in a bit of a writing funk this week, seeing Giddy again was like a breath of creative fresh air. I actually want to get back to my own work, which is a very nice feeling.

4 february. the snow was still melting. on the bird feeders out the back were four goldfinches and some siskins, as well as the usual blackbirds, robins and blue tits.
dad picked up granny on his way back from work and we had pumpkin soup for lunch. she had bought the times in windsor for some reason and so we had a look at the crossword together. there was a ‘quick cryptic’ which we did a few clues on, and i got SADOMASOCHISTIC on the regular cryptic. she said she liked my new jumper.
we drove back over to sunningdale. grandad’s ashes were in a blue box in what looked like a giant wine bottle gift bag. we walked around to the base of the redwood tree in the churchyard. it is on quite a big hillock now, which i guess must be from all of the years of dropped leaves. granny’s mum’s ashes were scattered here in 1986. the paper bag inside the box was stapled shut. we all took turns to scatter them: first granny, then dad, jane, me and mum, and then granny again. i think granny said something to grandad as she was scattering them. jane and i cried and i put my arm around her.
we went to the nags. i still wish that they hadn’t ripped so much out when they refurbished. it would have been nice to keep the old feel of the pub. we had some family chats and i think i managed to inject some empathy into some of the poison with which the daily telegraph slurries the local area.
we walked back to granny’s and i asked her if she missed having an open fire. then i gave her a hug and we went home.
