When you read suiton kikou lets us know what you thought about it pls

I just finished it, actually. I think the way LSD scanlation team described it is just on point: it’s a collection of bizarre vignettes. Russian localized title for it is ‘Stratosphere of a dream’ and I guess it’s also fits: it gives you a feeling of a weird dream, a bizzare world with its own laws of physics and everything - bulbs can fall from the sky and it’s totally ok. Plots… What can I say about plots, hm. Some of these stories left me like: “what was it even about, eh? never mind let’s just look closely at this author’s art and DETAILS and be aesthetically pleased and amazed by the author’s imagination”. Yeah, honestly speaking, my first and main thought was that this manga is a gift for someone like me who is a sucker for detaled art styles and inktober, haha. 

But, tbh, sometimes when a manga has a great/detailed art style and is pretentious enough to make you feel like is gives you A Story, I feel unsatisfied, as the author’s ability to give you this very story clearly gives in to their art skills, and it doesn’t feel great (*cough* Irie Aki and Kaoru Mori come to my mind, sadly *cough*). But it’s not the case of Suiton Kikou, imo. It’s very… fairytale-like, but not in a fairy way, but rather in… technology way? steampunkish way? The author is like (how he wrote in postface) “ah yeah i was into junk stuff as a kid, i collected weird things that adults would consider trash and now i’m kinda putting this passion of mine into manga, and i know it’s not good to fill everything with details but i can’t help it”, and half of the stories are such that on first glance they don’t have any plot at all –but only on the first glance. To be objective, all the stories presented in this collection are a bit different, and “strong the plot presence” in them varies from ‘wow wtf but i guess never mind look at the details’ to ‘wow it was a nice one, i loved the Story/the Idea’. I quite liked the stories about father and son going to find bones of a legendary wingless dragon, the vane thief, and the somnabulants. I give an A to the author’s storytelling ability. No evident moral lessons, no plots that would strike you, but the author’s imagination really impressed and inspired me.
