You'll need to bring along a 10th level cleric to read this post.
The Zombie is a legendary Tiki drink created by Don the Beachcomber. It's famous for both its potency and for the mystery of ingredients needed to make it. You see,Donn didn't want folks getting their hands on his recipes,so he did everything in code. 2oz of rum bottle A,1oz of mix #2,etc. So the original recipe was lost in time. Then along comes Jeff "Beachbum" Berry, who decides to get all serious with Tiki drink research, and he presented the following recipe created from painstaking research:
Mix #21 Book of Tiki Zombie
2oz gold rum
1oz dark rum
1oz white rum
1oz lime juice
3/4oz papaya juice
3/4oz pineapple juice
1/2 apricot brandy
1tsp simple syrup
Shake it all together and pour into tall glass. Add a float of 151 Demerara rum and garnish with a green cherry,a pineapple stick, and a red cherry on a toothpick, then sprinkle a bit of powdered sugar over it.
This was published in Sven Kirsten's book,The Book of Tiki,in a chapter Jeff wrote entitled "Mixologists and Concoctions". As an aside,it was also printed in the booklet of the Ultra-Lounge CD Vol 1 Mondo Exotica:
which also includes a bad recipe for a Blue Hawaii(you've been warned). This was considered to be the Zombie recipe, until 2005 when Jeff received some new info. After a bunch more research,he came up with this updated version:
Mix #22 Remixed Zombie
1.5oz gold rum
1.5oz dark rum
1oz 151 Demerara rum
3/4oz lime juice
1/2oz Don's mix *
1/2oz falernum
1tsp grenadine
6 drops absinthe
dash Angostura bitters
6oz crushed ice
Blend at high speed for 5 seconds. Pour into tall glass and add ice to fill.
*Don's Mix is 2 parts white grapefruit juice to 1 part cinnamon syrup. I've used regular grapefruit juice and BG Reynolds syrup with good results.
As you can see they're pretty different recipes. From what I've read, the Remixed is probably the correct one,but I prefer the BoT version because it's sweeter. Either way,the Donn wouldn't serve anyone more than two Zombies, and given the octane rating of these,I wouldn't either. Pick the one you like best,or give them both a try. Just make sure you're sitting down at home when you do it.
Ok class, now that we've covered the original Zombies, let's take a look at some modern versions. The aforementioned Beachbum has gotten together with Hamilton Rum to create a special zombie blend(which I've used to make a seriously twisted Mai Tai) and a recipe that showcases it:
Mix #23 Hamilton-Beachbum Zombie
2oz Beachbum Berry's Zombie Rum Blend
3/4oz lime juice
1/2oz white grapefruit juice
1/2oz cinnamon syrup
1/2oz falernum
1tsp grenadine
8 drops absinthe
dash Angostura bitters
6oz crushed ice
Blend for 5 seconds at high speed.
This is slightly less powerful than the originals, but don't let that 'only' two ounces of rum fool you, this does pack a punch.
Ken Holewczynski(no I don't know how to pronounce that) is the very cool dude who is behind the House of Tabu, creator of the Order of the Golden Fez,and publisher of the excellent Tiki magazine Exotica Moderne(so you should probably buy him a Mai Tai if you ever meet him). He came up with his own Zombie riff, from issue #17,the same one I was published in:
Mix #24 Zombo
2oz Beachbum Berry's Zombie Rum Blend
1oz orange juice
1/2oz lime juice
1/2oz falernum
1/2 Demerara syrup
1 bottle Underberg
Shake everything except the Underberg with ice and pour into a tall glass. Top with more ice and insert bottle of Underberg into the glass upside down.
First, never drink Underberg straight, always mix it with something, trust me. This is an interesting drink, the falernum and Underberg really come forward. Very spice-y and bitter-y. I actually pulled the bottle out after a couple pulls because I found it a bit intense. I liked it,but it won't appeal to the daiquiri/pina colada crowd.
BG Reynolds, maker of fine syrups, has also created a couple versions. Here are two from their site:
Mix #25 Atomic Zombie
2oz white rum
1oz Plantation OFTD rum
1oz lime juice
1oz lemon juice
1oz pineapple juice
1oz fassionola
1/2oz cinnamon syrup
dash Angostura bitters
Blend with 1.5 cups of ice.
A slightly sweeter Zombie with a good bit of kick.
Mix #26 Fassionola Zombie
1/2oz Demerara 151
1/2oz Demerara rum
1/2oz dark rum
1/2oz white rum
1oz fassionola
1/2oz lime juice
1/4oz Demerara syrup
Blend with 1.5 cups of ice.
Be careful with this one. It's only got two ounces of rum,but a half ounce is 151. Combined with all that fassionola and you can have a recipe for a good hangover.
So put down your barb-wire-wrapped baseball bat, lash a walker to a treadmill to power your blender, and forget all your troubles with what Donn called "a mender of broken dreams". Just remember the rules and stop at two,or you might be a zombie in the morning.

An Introduction
Over a decade ago, I had a thread on the Eden Studios forums, “Heroes and Monsters of the New Millennium” which fit various characters into the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on the surface.
In truth, it was doing writeups for the Crossover Universe concept (at the time known as the Wold Newton Universe) started by Philip Hose Farmer and expanded upon by Win Scott Eckert. It went on and covered a LOT of things.
At the same time, I also posted many writeups of folkloric monsters for the Ghosts of Albion game on a different section of the board.
I feel like sharing those things once again, in a new platform (as the old platform has been... roughed up a bit). Plus, with a few years of refinement, things are a bit different than I originally imagined them to be.
This blog will contain those writeups.
I am open to requests, but they must either be of folkloric beings, or of things that can be tied into the Crossover Universe (IE: “Have they had official crossovers with a member of the CU, either directly or indirectly via shout-out or shared products?”).
There’s a lot of rules to the Crossover Universe, so don’t worry too much if something doesn’t link up.
If you want shorthand -- have they met/could they easily meet: Sherlock Holmes, Dracula, Cthulhu, and/or Batman? If yes, they are probably in. And if they HAVE met them, then they ARE in*.
*(Except for Batman, he cannot bring in other DC characters in the mainstream Crossover Universe in an effort to keep the amount and power of Supers down and not overshadow more human heroes).
Besides, this is all just for fun.
Here’s some example crossovers, just to get you in the mind set:
Sugar Bombs, featured in: Calvin and Hobbes, The Incredibles, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Runaways, and Fallout.
The West Coast Avengers (Vol. 3 #10) escape villains to reach the World Of Nothing But Shrimp, first mentioned in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Deadpool (#28) and his wife Shikla stumble across the Bride’s Rampage while in Japan (Kill Bill vol. 1).
Power Man and Iron Fist #65 -- Those three ladies Danny is fighting? They’re totally not Charlie’s Angels. Nope. No sir!
Thanks to this Crossover, Cassandra Cain is officially part of the Crossover Universe.
Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur #43 - PKE Meter links this series to Ghostbusters.
Blue Beetle Vol 7 #27 Put in two Lovecraft nods, bringing in Jaime Reyes’s Blue Beetle.
The Middleman recalls meeting the First Doctor.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer didn’t get many Crossovers while at Darkhorse, but here she gets cameos from Hellboy and a Predator.
Edna Mode cameos in Spider-Girl #90
Atomic Robo recalls working with Buckaroo Banzai and the Hong Kong Cavaliers.
Superboy lounges at Young Justice’s headquarters having somehow managed to survive Trogo’s Pizza. Crossing over Manos: The Hands of Fate and Mystery Science Theater 3000.
And Finally, TV’s Frank and Doctor Forester cameo in Gen13 meet Monkeyman and O’Brien.
Which should give a taste for how BIZARRE this is going to be!
And yes, we do have JOJO in this thing!
Here’s Lupin and Jigen showing up in Egypt in the 80s while the Jo-Bros head to Egypt to find DIO.
Also, a Stone Mask shows up in Castlevania Season 3.
We Got SO much!

i freaking loved ur answer 🥰 but i meant more like what harry styles songs do u think cas would like?
ahhh okay okay i got u
well number 1 i just want u all to know that cas is a take me home bitch. it’s THEE pop album of all time and that’s what he’s about. however, his favorite 1d song is perfect bc he loves the harry & taylor drama. (and dean is somewhat perturbed by this bc he thinks that taylor should be valued first and foremost as a genius songwriter. they have very different taylor swift opinions. but that’s a different ask.)
okay cas’ harry faves are: adore you, watermelon sugar, sunflower vol. 6, and carolina. (he prefers fine line but does sometimes pointedly play woman & she around dean or when he’s feeling extra sad gay and dramatique he lounges to meet me in the hallway)
yeah he DOES make dean dance to sunflower vol 6 with him in their kitchen
i’m drunk ask me things

D.Gray-Man Vol.26: Komui’s Lounge (Extended) 3/5
>> Part 1 <<
>> Part 2 <<
Question 13: How is the cover image for the tankobon (comic book) and Jump SQ. RISE (the magazine) decided?
Lavi: The author has full liberty for the comic book’s cover, but in the magazine’s case, the exclusive designer will ask the author to draw it according to their image of the cover.
Allen: You know so much, Lavi. I’d expect no less from the author’s bosom friend!
Lavi: Are you dissing me, Allen-san?
Marie: So the designer is the one who decides the character and their pose?
Lavi: Yep. I heard sometimes they even request color tones as well. Because the cover is the face of the whole magazine, Hoshino’s nervous when drawing the magazine’s covers, unlike the comic book’s.
Link: On a side note, on the cover of this latest Volume 26, General Cross is holding a toothpick in his mouth.
Allen: Do we have to go into such detail?
Link: I thought there might be those who are wondering.
Lavi: That’s because back in Volume 14, she drew General Cross holding a cigarette and got scolded.
Bak: What’s wrong with that? Couldn’t she draw whatever she wants to?
Lavi: Well, after all, this is still a shounen manga
(T/N: comic written for teenage boys).
Wisely: Grown-up issues, indeed.
Question 14: Link, between English and French tea, which do you prefer?
Link: We’ve received a number of beverage-related questions. For example, How many sugar cubes does the Millennium Earl consume during teatime? and Exactly how delicious is Lenalee Lee’s coffee? As for my preference, I’d probably say English tea. Inspector Lvellie prefers French tea, though, so I’ve had a great deal of that as well. The Earl prefers English, doesn’t he?
Wisely: Correct you are. The Earl has an awfully sweet tooth. He puts in 20 sugar cubes and lots of milk for a cup of tea. He’s such a dear. He’s moping lately after Desires told him to cut back on his sugar intake. What a dear.
Allen: I wonder why he would consider that adorable.
Lavi: There’s more sugar than tea in your tea, too, right Allen?
Allen: SUPER SWEET TEA WITH SALTY THINGS IS A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN!!!
Lavi: Do you really have to yell it?
Link: Make sure you brush your teeth well, Walker. You’re always sleeping right after your meals.
Allen: Roger roger roger.
Link: Only once is enough!
(T/N: In Japan, saying “yes” (hai) more than once is considered rude, as it shows annoyance. I get that a lot from my coworkers.)
Marie: You had tea parties with Lenalee and Miranda sometimes, right Allen?
Bak: WHAT!? Walker! You!
Allen: Eh? Wait! It’s just because they said they’ll give me sweets. There’s no ulterior motive on my part! Besides, it’s more like Link and Lenalee’s tea discussion with me tagging along than a tea party, actually.
Link: What are you talking about? I was the one accompanying you!
Allen: Well, aren’t you the one who did the most talking?
Link: That’s because you were busy eating the whole time, isn’t it? Lenalee Lee seems to make a hobby out of serving the Science Division coffee and tea, so we simply exchanged ideas on tea leaves and brewing. She’s more of an expert than even me on tea, after all.
Marie: Looks like she’s been studying up for the Science guys’ sake. She learned coffee brewing straight from Head Chef Jeryy himself too, and her coffee’s simply awesome.
Lavi: Plus, you also get to behold that adorable face as she hands you your cup with a smile, and it enhances the experience. Hey, Allen, Lenalee’s been taking really good care of her hands, ya know? Said she wanna serve us tea with beautiful hands. Ah, she really is a lady...
Allen: I’m getting all choked up right now.
Bak: Lenalee-san...you’re wonderful. (in love♡)
Question 15: Does Lavi wash his face with his eyepatch on? Or wash his face in secret?
Allen: He leaves it on.
Lavi: I TAKE IT OFF! OF COURSE I TAKE IT OFF! But yeah, I do wash my face in secret!
Allen: You always leave it on when we use the Order’s communal bath together, don’t you? Why do you have to be so secretive about it? Stop being so stuck-up and let us see it already!
Lavi: Argh! Stop, Allen! Stop yanking! Aaaaaargh!
Marie: Oi, Allen! Lavi told you to stop, didn’t he?
Link: Walker, stop wasting our precious paper bullying Bookman Jr.
Wisely: There, there. It’s fine, isn’t it? Our readers will get stressed out if we keep it all stiff and heavy. Besides, the boy hasn’t seen Bookman Jr. in ages and he’s just thrilled.
Allen: That’s not it!
Bak: That aside, why do you need to hide it? Is there some secret behind it?
Lavi: Well, about that...I really can’t say anything.
Question 16: Since when did Supervisor Komui and Head Chef Jeryy become close friends?
Marie: When...? They already seem close by the time Head Chef Jeryy transferred to Headquarters, though.
Bak: That’s because Komui was the one who recommended Jeryy for the transfer. Jeryy was a cook in the Asian Branch at first, and he went to all sorts of trouble taking care of Komui back when he just joined the Order. Komui was a completely different person back then, you see. He had this slightly dangerous streak about him, so Jeryy probably couldn’t find it in him to just leave him be.
Komui seemed prejudiced against Jeryy for a while there, but then he might’ve lost the battle of wills, and before I knew it, they’ve already become close. After that, when Komui was promoted to Supervisor, Jeryy was the first he called over to Headquarters. It might’ve been to help Lenalee-san who was mentally ill back then, I reckon.
Link: I don’t mind them being close, but calling each other by the likes of “Komie-sweetie” and “Jerry-deary” in the vicinity of Order members is quite out of line in my opinion.
Wisely: That Jeryy-summat lad’s food seems real delicious to me. I’d love to try some.
Allen: Negative. Jeryy-san is mine.
Lavi: He’s not yours...
Question 17: Are Noah Memories comprised of only original memories of the past? Though the Noah Memories are passed on from person to person, can we conclude that the human memories of previous Noah hosts are not passed on to the next Noah host as well?
Lavi: Now this is an interesting question.
Wisely: Hmmm. Yes, the memories are passed on. When we are awakened as Noah, an enormous amount of memories and data would come rushing into our heads, and among them are also the memories and emotions of those who were previous reincarnations of Noah.
Allen: I had the memories of Suman, who became a Fallen One, flow into my head once. Back then, I felt like I’m going to lose my very self. My head felt like it was breaking apart, and I was really scared. Though you’re all Noah anyway, you guys really are something, living carefree even with memories and feelings of countless other people within you.
Wisely: We’re not carefree, boy. In the past there were also Noah whose selves were devoured by the memories and were destroyed. In order to keep that from happening, usually most Noah unconsciously suppress those memories. By doing so, we can shut out the memories of the previous incarnations. However, if Noahs are injured by Innocence, they might not be able to suppress it anymore, and those memories would come flooding back. We Noah also have it tough as well.
Allen: Now that you mention it, the Noah really do seem to become more violent the more we attack them.
Wisely: The profound hatred towards Innocence within the memories is what makes us so. That’s why we’d like you to be gentle with us ♡.
Allen: That tendency to joke about is just what drives me up the wall.
Lavi: Is it true that even among Noahs, the Millennium Earl is the only one who lives for several thousands of years?
Wisely: Correct.
Bak: Do all humans have the possibility of awakening as a Noah?
Wisely: They do.
Marie: And that awakening cannot be prevented?
Wisely: No. Furthermore, once they learn of Noah’s mission, they would accept it with their own free will.
Link: And what is Noah’s mission?
Wisely: Oh dear. That’s a secret~♫
Link: Tch.
Question 18: Looks like Allen’s hobby is saving up money. Was he doing other part-time jobs apart from helping out at the cafeteria as well?
Lavi: Nah, mostly it was just the cafeteria right? ‘Coz you got to sneak some bites.
Allen: It was the best part-time job on earth. At the Order, looks like it’s just the stint at the cafeteria and helping out the Science Division. Actually I’d wanted to earn a bit more, but what with rewriting reports, studying and trainingーeven on holidays I’m still quite busy.
Link: What’s with that disgruntled look? Fulfilling your duties as an Exorcist is just natural. Besides, you’re being paid to be one anyway, aren’t you?
Allen: But that’s totally not enough at all!
Wisely: Can’t be helped, with that much debt on your tab.
Bak: Such hardship at such a young age, Walker. Unimaginable to me, though, well-bred as I am.
Allen: If your heart pains for me, then please donate. (whips out donation box).
Marie: “At the Order”, you said. You mean you’ve worked elsewhere before?
Allen: Back when I was still training, I worked with Master as guards for caravans. Functions as battle training, too. It was a rough job, but the pay really was wonderful. To top that, we also got free meals, and debt collectors didn’t pursue us into deserts, too.
Lavi: You really seem to be able to survive anywhere, huh.
Link: Caravans...? So that’s how you’ve been mingling in and lying low. No wonder we hadn’t been able to track down General Cross.
Question 19: What became of Kanda’s underpants that Lavi hid back in the Weekend Schedule?
(T/N: From Gray Log. Argh dammit haven’t got round to translating Lavi’s)
Marie: Oi! Lavi! You really are such a pain!
Lavi: Ack! Sorry! But Yu’s always so calm and cool, you see. Makes me wanna see him freaking out for once.
Bak: You must really have balls to try that out.
Link: So uncivilized... (T/N: I feel like I’m quoting Obi-Wan a lot...)
Allen: So? Did Kanda freak out?
Wisely: You seem to be enjoying this, boy.
Lavi: Naaaaah~Actually, he just got dressed like nothing happened then went out to the forest for night practice.
Allen: ーwith NO UNDERPANTS ON!?
Marie: Well, it’s not totally unexpected...or rather...Kanda probably won’t get worked up over such things?
Wisely: I see...It’s the same with Tikky too. Is it just that gorgeous men do not need underpants to be gorgeous men?
Allen: I have completely no idea what you’re talking about here.
Lavi: To top that, looks like Yu just slept in the forest like that with no underpants on, too. It really wasn’t worth the trouble hiding his pants. Ah, bummer.
Marie: It's not just ah bummer, is it!? Give Kanda back his pants!
Lavi: Whaaaaat!? Even if I did return it to him, the way things are Yu wouldn’t remember it anyway. He’d probably just say something like “Huh? What’s this about?” then just stalk off! And I’d be left looking like a dork who bombed a pant-stealing prank! It’s embarrassing!
Marie: You got it backwards. What’s embarrassing here is the fact that you hid someone’s underpants, good grief (weary face).
Allen: Marie, you have to be more seriously angry, otherwise you’ll never get through to Lavi. Gotta look more strict.
Lavi: Youーyou traitor! You were all grins back there when you heard how I hid Yu’s pants, weren’t you, Allen!?
Allen: Was I? Of course not. Unlike you, I’m not a little kid.
Lavi: Ha! You’re one to talk! Whenever you do part-time at the cafeteria, you’re always stealing bites out of Yu’s food before you serve it to him. Think I didn’t know!?
Allen: That’s because Kanda’s always mocking my hospitality skills. Befitting punishment, I say! It’s not like you’re any better, Lavi. I know you’re always stuffing Kanda’s bag full of porn whenever he goes on a mission. And then there’s the time you tampered with Kanda’s toothpasteー
Lavi: You were with me that time, weren’t you!?
Bak: There’s more?
Wisely: A-ho-ho-ho (laughing). Somehow I feel like we can be good friends, boys.
Marie: Would you guys stop it already? Look, I’m grateful that you boys care about Kanda, since you guys are around the same age, but tone down the pranks! He’s still not used to these things.
Allen, Lavi: Aw, come on~!
Link: We shall not let our precious word count be depleted further by such a nonsensical topic. This conversation ends here!!

Family Friday (vol. 89): Ringing in 2019!
I cannot believe it was November 30th that I last posted a Family Friday! Time really does fly, doesn’t it?
The holidays were good! I had a bit of anxiety going into them because we had lots of travel planned. That is, after we canceled out trip to Cancun (don’t feel too bad for me, we just booked a 9 night stay in MAUI for our 10th anniversary this spring!!!). Piper also came down with what I have to assume was the flu. She had 103 degree temps for 2 days and was a little limp noodle for 3+ days. She recovered just in time for Christmas, though!
Christmas Eve I worked a half day, reported home to throw everything in the car, and headed 2 1/2 hours to my cousin’s house. We did a whirlwind Christmas Eve there before driving back home and doing the whole Santa thing. The girls were sound asleep when we arrived home, but good thing mom and dad remembered Santa’s cookies (and cocoa, not milk…thanks to the lady at checkout one day. UGH) and the carrots for the reindeer. Santa even left a handwritten note telling the girls they needed to be good in order for Santa to come again next year. In the morning, they first had to finish up Santa’s cookies (guess he wasn’t all that hungry after a very filling Christmas Eve) and only after all the sugar was gone could they then moved on to gifts. The highlight was the “rainbow watch” that Santa was lucky enough to score on Amazon. Because really, where does one find a RAINBOW watch? The elves were stumped. We really did keep it simple this year: watch, sled, Shimmer & Shine dolls, a game/puzzle each, toothbrush, and Contigo kids water bottles because they disappear only every other second. It won’t be long before we’re upping the ante on the holidays so we enjoyed keeping it at a minimum. Oh, and for now, two of everything. Keeping the peace as we learn the intricacies of sharing.
On Christmas Day, my parents and brother reported to Michigan for a day of homemade cinnamon rolls, appetizers, and lounging around. A little gift opening, too, of course. My crew didn’t get up until well past 9am and so albeit a very busy morning for me, I had cinnamon rolls rising and all my appetizers prepped by the time they sauntered down. I think next year (at 5 and 3-years-old) it will REALLY get exciting. Piper sure does love saying “Christmas!” every time she sees Christmas lights or a Christmas tree. This includes every evergreen tree we see. I really do think 2 is the most perfect age. Don’t get me started on how every coin (penny, quarter, nickel, fake coin, whatever) is a “wishing coin”. She recalls the ONE time at least 7-8 months ago we threw a penny into a wishing well. She’s just the cutest. Shea, on the other hand, while absolutely adorable, questions EVERYTHING. I realize this is part of development and is age-appropriate and so I dig deep for all of my patience. The girl is just incessant with the talking and questions. She’s basically a miniature version of me and so naturally that just doesn’t always jive 🙂
The evening of Christmas we packed up and headed to my in-laws for 5 days. We got to see my sister-in-law who was in from Seattle and got in some visits with friends, cousin time, an Illini game, a little bit of shopping, plenty of eating, and fortunately, plenty of sleep and exercise. The midwest temperatures have been glorious!
We got back last Sunday and I returned to work on Monday. I wasn’t really planning to work a full day, but I definitely did. My leadership cohort is wrapping up next month and I’ve got some catching up to do. I present to the health system’s senior leadership team in just over a month and obviously I want to showcase all that my project entailed. With New Years Day off, it was a weird mid-week break before returning to our regularly scheduled program of daycare and work on Wednesday. We got in a groove just in time for the weekend and so here we are. I think we’re all ready for a return to normalcy – you know, reasonable bedtimes, waking before 8am, brushing teeth before noon, eating vegetables…the whole bit!
In case you didn’t read or see, Mark got me a Peloton for Christmas! It was most unexpected and it gets installed on Monday. It is JUST the thing I need to get back in the groove of morning workouts. I was at the gym this week and holy heck was it BUSY. I just can’t. The gym in January makes me nuts. I’m very excited to retreat to my basement with my new bike and really get into some lasting morning workout routines. It is forever a struggle of mine even though evening workouts are straight up TORTURE.
I got 2 new cookbooks (1 as a gift and 1 as a gift for myself – oops) and I’m thoroughly enjoying both. I’ve chosen some killer recipes and have some happy campers over here.
My FitBit died yesterday and I’m so annoyed. I got a Versa in late August and in the past week the battery started draining about 3-4x faster than it had been and than it should be. I called FitBit and they were wonderful, providing directions on next steps to perform a battery life test. I was in the process of recharging after it died completely, as instructed, and now it is totally unresponsive. I called FitBit back last night and they are sending a new one. Still, I’m annoyed. Mark teased that I might as well not move until it comes because I won’t get “my steps” (what a terd), but it’s just the concept. And admittedly, I’m so accustomed to text alerts and calls coming to my watch that I feel a little lost without it. Oh, technology. What insignificant problems you present!
Our podcast is going SO well! So well in that we finally have a groove and we’re loving it. If you haven’t checked it out, please do! It’s called the Dietitians Dish. We’d also love if you’d review our podcast after listening. We welcome any episode topic requests or questions – feel free to email those or post here as a comment! I always love to hear what people want to hear about. ‘Cause lord knows Gina and I could make a podcast about nearly anything and have a blast in the process. She’s my new Saturday morning coffee date in the basement as we record podcast episodes.
I’m also thinking about writing a blog post devoted to how we started our podcast. It might save someone a LOT of time and energy. Plus, it’d be podcasting for dummies because we are such novices on the tech side…but have so much nutrition, food, mom, and girl stuff we want to talk about. I can’t wait to see where 2019 takes our little podcast!
Date night tonight – better get to looking presentable. Have a super first weekend of 2019!
Be well,

I was tagged by @pennflinn!
Rules:
1. Always post the rules. 2. Answer the questions given by the person who tagged you. 3. Write 11 questions of your own. 4. Tag 11 people.
Answered questions:
1. How do you take your tea (or coffee)? I can take tea anywhere from black to with milk, to with milk and sugar. For coffee, it needs to be half milk and with a shit-ton of sugar.
2. What happy memory would you use to conjure a patronus? Ummmm...my dad reading to me before bed, probably?
3. Favorite childhood book/book series? Because the last question helped jog my memory, probably Harry Potter overall.
4. Would you rather travel to the bottom of the ocean or to the moon? The moon. Ocean is too creepy.
5. What are you reading right now? A combo of DC’s Bombshells Vol. 1 comic and re-reading A Clash of Kings.
6. If you could wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be? Does this account for all seasons? Because I have a sundress that it wouldn’t be too hard to run/fight in, but I would freeze to death in it during winter. Other than that, my favourite pair of jeans and low-collared tank top.
7. Star Wars or Star Trek? Have to go with Star Wars.
8. Describe a perfect Sunday. Sleeping in, lounging about most of the day, only needing to do a bit of work, maybe doing something small with family/friends/current significant others
9. Know any other languages? What language would you like to learn? I spent years learning French and Japanese, but it’s been 5-6 years since I stopped and couldn’t hold a conversation in either if my life depended on it. It would be nice to learn Ukrainian.
10. Describe the room you’re currently in in three words or fewer. Family room
11. Do you dream in color? Yes.
I tag...oh boy, there’s no way I’m going to reach 11... @veliseraptor, @thisdorkyblogthing, @iamthelightening, @thelightofthingshopedfor, @claricechiarasorcha, @mikkeneko, @literallyflashtrash...that’s over halfway to 11 that’s close enough.
My questions:

138 Haiku for Ahm-Ree-Kah
Said Whitman one time:
“America: that great poem.”
The greatest, even.
In this tradition,
let me present most humbly
a Whitman’s sampler.
Only with fewer
Cashew Clusters™ and slightly
more facetiousness.
Los Angeles
Who has ever seen
such strong light hitting green hills?
And highways, highways.
A smiling man in
a green and white food truck
hands me three tacos.
Golden, delicious,
they go well with the soda
people keep on hand.
Big Sur
Mountains roll sharply
into angry green-white surf.
Bridges span chasms.
Where did Kerouac
sleep, as a local? Was it
in this log cabin?
Likely not. This spot
is muddy, expensive, and
less than fully Zen.
Cannery Row
Rattlesnakes, dusty-
eyed and serene, fill my thoughts
of this dream-like place.
In reality,
Mac & co have moved on. The
hotel looks nice, though.
Steinbeck and Ricketts:
dudes sharing their many loves.
Got to commend that.
I think I buy this
book for people because it
is short and punchy.
In that it punches
the reader in the heart with
warm contemplations.
Look, just go buy a
copy for yourself. Hell, send
me your damn address.
San Francisco
Orange steel stretches
impossibly across churn
and wash of green salt.
How could you not love
the city of Al Ginsberg?
Rain falls in warm streets.
I run up to the
big red radio tower.
A glorious view.
This one other dude
was running close behind me.
I felt I knew him.
Amtrak: San Francisco to Chicago
The furnishings may
be dated, but the burgers?
Salty. Prepared weekly.
Who cares? This train goes
through snowy mountains, deserts,
and seven (eight?) states.
The viewing car is
full of folks taking it in
with icy cold drinks.
Everyone wants
to talk at lunch. Wrestling, birds,
democracy, Trump.
Good thing every
one of these passengers is
well over sixty.
Plenty of time to
gather esoteric facts
for polite strangers.
There’s a kindness,
a lulling passivity
of wheels over tracks.
We share a “roomette”.
Lordy, to be paid to come
up with product names.
Seventy hours on
the train. I could have stayed on
no problem at all.
Chicago
Where can we find Jeff
Tweedy? I guess I thought he
would just be around.
Those cake stand towers
are right outside our hotel.
Black against blue sky.
The freezing wind lifts
from Lake Michigan like a
swift kick in the teeth.
The lines in the grey
city stay sharp as night falls
over the water.
In the donut shop
a young kid clutches pastry
tight in his fingers.
If we lived here I’d
likely revert back to him.
They were that damn good.
“Fire Cakes”. Hell of a
name for sugar, pastry, cream.
Better than DD.
Detroit
I keep a lookout
for ambiguous danger,
but I need not fret.
Once shrines to commerce,
now dusty car garages.
I guess it happens.
Some dude is buying
up city blocks and hiring
his own police force.
How do locals feel?
Is the cash grab members-only?
Who is invited?
Our Uber driver
has a kind face. He tutors
math on Monday nights.
He drives us to Grosse
Pointe. “Old-school rich Detroiters.”
He knows a few souls.
A bored waiter feeds
us some gourmet duck fried rice.
We talk past closing.
New York City (Vol. 1)
Hello again, dear friend.
I see your street vendors are
still hustling dosas.
We walk in Central
Park under light snow. Who keeps
knitting dog sweaters?
Bowling, falafel,
Animal Collective, beers.
Sleepy subway home.
Montreal
We walk a mastiff
cross named Mischa. The sidewalk
salt hurts her paw pads.
The temperature?
Negative butthole degrees.
Still kids play hockey.
Poutine, coffee, sleep.
When wearing two coats
just isn’t enough.
Boston
A guy selling ham
sandwiches knows about home.
“Mate! Bro!”, he exclaims.
We walk the brick lane
of Paul Revere’s freedom trail
to get cannoli.
Can one highway off-
ramp cleave itself into four?
In Boston, it might.
Brattleboro, Vt.
Sweet land of Bernie!
Syrup, pie, cider, pecans.
Anarchist bookstores.
We find a brewery
serving solely sour brews with
faux-Catholic names.
“The Angry Bishop.”
“Cardinal’s Peach Party Ale.”
You get the idea.
Who knew a maple
latte could actually
be good? Fuck Starbucks™.
Our dear friends have a
small human baby! We read
Hairy MacLary.
Boston (again)
So much brotherhood
present tonight at the men’s
candlestick bowling.
They let Dianny
rent shoes, but keep an eye out
for any girl stuff.
Philadelphia
City of the Roots!
Of Federal Fried Chicken!
Of Kurt Vile’s soft drawl!
Isaiah Zagar.
His name is colour, movement;
a poem in itself.
We visit all the
historical stuff. Highlight?
Hot cheese steaks. No shame.
Washington D.C.
We stand hemmed in with
a million other people.
And yet, no ruckus.
Except the ruckus
of a giant yarn uterus.
That’s dedication.
On the bus homeward
passengers doze against each
other, smiling, spent.
Baltimore
Four-storey spiral
shark tank. Kindly swim clockwise,
or you’ll be gnawed at.
Aquarium, then
Shake Shack™. Penguins, tortoises,
wee sloth family.
They have these fishes
that aim spit at bugs, knocking
them into the stream.
Our Uber driver
is a chicken connoisseur.
He suggests Popeye’s.
Our burgers make him
peckish. We offer to share.
He laughs. He’s all good.
We spend the morning
with Bloody Marys and some
crab cake Benedict.
And the afternoon
sharing cheesecake, fudge blocks, and
enjoying Face / Off.
Blue Ridge Parkway
It is my birthday.
And our anniversary.
Waffle House™ it is.
Two lovely old chaps
man the lonely tourism
centre. It’s winter.
We’re likely the sole
visitors for the day. They
seem just fine with that.
The long drive rewards
us with thick stands of fir trees
dripping with winter.
A recreated
length of train tracks shows us where
commerce once began.
Are the bears sleeping?
Unclear. Better keep any
Snyder’s™ in the car.
We come upon an
abandoned farm house. Trees grow
clear through the iron roof.
Grizzled red cattle
stand in the shade of an old
leaning wooden barn.
Dianny takes a
bunch of photos. I prepare
myself for locals.
The parkway sometimes
seems to run itself purely
into the blue sky.
The precise hue of
the blue hills evades capture
in these meagre words.
Suffice to tell you:
the breath quickens, the heart swells,
and everything stops.
Asheville
We wind up stopping
in Asheville. They have a sweet
pinball museum.
Murakami would
thoroughly lose his shit with
the range of machines.
We eat salty fried
green tomatoes, cheese grits, and
Madras chilli fries.
Nashville
Yo La Tengo are
fans of Prince’s Hot Chicken.
Take their word for it.
Did you ever eat
chicken so hot you had to
avoid touching…parts?
Trust me, dearest friends.
Do not mess about with these
rocks of pure hellspice.
The old Drake Hotel.
“Stay where the stars stay!” In the
seventies, perhaps.
We meet a couple
from Carolina outside
the Bluebird Café.
They have one ticket
between them. She goes in. He
peers through the glass door.
We continue to
eat the kind of barbeque
one might brag about.
Charleston
A sign outside a
bar proclaims the presence of
Bill Murray. Cheap trick.
Doesn’t stop us from
pulling off the road in a
cloud of gravel dust.
What a pair of chumps.
We practice our lines in case
he needs two more friends.
An anti-climax,
but we still enjoy foaming
ale (and more pinball).
Our BNB host
has framed pictures of Xena,
Warrior Princess.
She is thrilled to hear
where we’re from. Less thrilled to hear
we don’t know Lucy.
Savannah
Tickets for Moonlight.
Two other people in the
cinema. Both leave.
More great barbeque.
Cornbread, sticky ribs, collards.
One meal for the day.
St. Augustine
A diamond-shaped stone
fortress keeps the harbour safe
from the English hordes.
Portly volunteers
fire the neutered guns hourly
just to scare tourists.
Orlando
Okay, we did it.
We went to Universal™.
We have few regrets.
Di got to pretend
to be a wizard for a
time. Wand included.
Turns out Butter Beer
is a kind of ginger fizz
with marshmallow foam.
My younger stomach
was far better at dealing
with roller coasters.
Still, I ride them all.
Because I am a tightwad.
And also, reals tough.
Two days of this stuff
is enough for me to crave
a quiet darkened room.
Miami
Will Smith was correct.
Miami certainly does
bring the heat, for real.
We sneak in to some
hotel lounge chairs and disguise
ourselves as ballers.
No one is convinced,
but the waiters humour us.
I get lobster burnt.
I get to practice
my toddler-grade español
with real life toddlers.
Donde es Tomas?
El es aqui! El es muy
fuerte, y tonto!
Es peligroso
para tocar los…raccoons...
(I don’t know “raccoons”).
New Orleans
There is a riot
of big band horns lifting through
the hot fragrant air.
Carry your open
drink anywhere you like, friend.
Just be nice, or leave.
We rent bicycles
and spend long warm afternoons
avoiding pot holes.
A boisterous young dude
yells to us through a broken
window as we pass.
Stay off Bourbon Street.
It’s like Courtenay Place, but
somehow even worse.
We stumble upon
an impossibly raucous
Mardi Gras parade.
One float shows paper
mache Putin gleefully
rogering Donald.
Another Donald
is roped above a sharp-toothed
sarlacc vagina.
Elsewhere, Donalds
endure a colourful range
of brutal torture.
All of the craft stores
must have sold out of his shade
of neon orange.
The vile bloat of his
maniac features seems a
popular float choice.
Just not popular
enough for the popular
vote. Can’t help myself.
Our cab driver is
most delighted to hear us
use the term “had beef”.
He tells us he has
always wanted to travel
to Australia.
New York City (Vol. 2)
NYC round two!
It’s so nice to be back in
your cathedral streets.
We create habits:
Morning run, bagel, coffee,
then museums.
A couple of films,
a trip to Katz’s deli for
pastrami on rye.
An afternoon in
Bushwick, fossicking about
in the vintage aisles.
Time is running out
in a nice way. Three months is
likely sufficient.
Last day. JFK.
John Mayer sings with great breath
in duty-free aisles.
A table of young
Russians pick hot pineapple
from pizza slices.
Soon I will not speak
the language. I think I was
alright at charades.
Thank you, Ahm-Ree-Kah.
Your people have been a trip.
All the best with Trump.
