Mogul Mowgli - Berlinale/LFF 2020
Mogul Mowgli
[Berlinale 2020 - LFF 2020]
United Kingdom 2020
90 Min
Director: Bassam Tariq
Cast: Riz Ahmed, Alyy Khan, Sudha Bhuchar, Nabhaan Rizwan, Anjana Vasan, Aiysha Hart, Hussain Manawer, Kiran Sonia Sawar, Jeff Mirza
On the brink of his first international tour, Zed, a British Pakistani rapper, decides to fly home to the UK to visit the family he has not seen in two years. In the midst of trying to reconnect with his parents and rummaging through cassettes of Qawwali music, he is suddenly struck down by an autoimmune disease. As his condition worsens and his big breakthrough moment is in danger of vanishing into thin air, Zed descends into a physical and emotional crisis, amplified by vivid hallucinations. Long-buried childhood memories resurface with a vengeance, mingling with his father’s memories of fleeing India during Partition and confronting Zed with his repressed cultural heritage.
Riz Ahmed co-wrote the film with first feature director Bassam Tariq and made his own songs for Mogul Mowgli performances. If you only heard about Riz Ahmed for his brilliant actor career (Nightcrawler, The Night Of ), you are missing on something. As an outstanding voices of our world, Riz is also a powerful rapper (Swet Shop Boys). As his character finding out his old audio cassettes, I’m still listening up to his Cashmere album on cassette.
With Mogul Mowgli, Riz Ahmed takes on very personal topics with the Partition, cultural heritage, identity and family. The relationship that “Zed” creates with his dad, played by the extraordinary Alyy Khan, gives a beautiful, emotional and so intimate tone to the film. When the character of Riz explores the loss of control over his body, he deeply and dramatically falls into a search for an inner solution. To vanquish his disease he needs to go past his demons, his struggles with family and Pakistani heritage and a quite scary hallucination. Then the director Bassam Tariq brings us into a mix of dreams and nightmares, memories and fears. A trip and a feeling that never really leave you. Beautifully made, we travel deep into the bloody consequences of Partition and the depth of cultural heritage. All of it with the powerful words and songs created by Riz Ahmed, raging through our hearts, and beating up his fear and disease.
Outstanding debut feature for Bassam Tariq, using great music and photography with a perfect balance between comedy and drama where Mogul Mowgli never falls into pity. And we clearly get one of the best toilets scene ever. Of course, Mogul Mowgli is another show of performance for Riz Ahmed, who never ceases to amaze.
What happens when you to cut yourself from the world because of health crisis? No, Mogul Mowgli is not a film about COVID-19 or any lockdown but it definitely makes it easy for the audience to relate, to connect.
Mogul Mowgli is a personal reflection that we should all watch and reflect on ourselves.
Words of wisdom.
Grade: B

"You need to get your house in order!" Limelight Distribution has debuted a trailer for Ben Wheatley's latest film, a familial dramedy titled Happy New Year, Colin Burstead. This already showed on BBC TV last year, after touring around film festivals starting with the London Film Festival. The raucous "family reunion comedy" is about a man named Colin Burstead, of course, who has decided to rent a lavish country manor for his extended family to celebrate New Year. Unfortunately for Colin his position of power in the family is under serious threat from the arrival of his estranged brother David, sending everything into chaos. The cast includes Neil Maskell as Colin, with Sura Dohnke, Marvin Maskell, Nicole Nettleingham, Doon Mackichan, Bill Paterson, Hayley Squires, Mark Monero, Richard Glover, and Sudha Bhuchar. This looks great! This impressed me, and it still has Wheatley's style. I love the dramatic turn in the trailer.
Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Ben Wheatley's Happy New Year, Colin Burstead, from YouTube:
Colin Burstead has hired a heritage mansion for a New Year's Eve party for his extended family and hangers-on, with his own wife Val, teenage daughter Fran, and infant son Jamie in tow. Colin's mother–the family's matriarch–dramatically injures her ankle before she has even crossed the manor house's threshold. Her indebted husband Gordon is desperately trying to secure a life-saving loan that Colin simply will not grant him. Uncle Bertie is secretly ill, and knows this might be his last time seeing the clan all together. Happy New Year, Colin Burstead is written and directed by acclaimed English filmmaker Ben Wheatley, of the films Down Terrace, Kill List, Sightseers, A Field in England, High-Rise, and Free Fire previously. This premiered at the London Film Festival last year, and played at the Stockholm Film Festival. This also debuted on UK's BBC late last year. There's still no US release date set yet - stay tuned for updates.
