Thinking about a Ruger American in either 5.56 or 300 Blackout. I don't know if I'd ever get around to suppressing it but maybe with the Texas ruling that could get easier? Feels like a gamble atm.

I feel every time I went to shoot I'd be taking more advantage of 5.56 being cheap and wouldn't get much out of 300 without a suppressor.

7.62x39 is also an option as I already have a decent stock of ammo but then I don't get to use cheap and plentiful AR mags and I know the ballistics fall off on it much faster?

Is subsonic 7.62x39 easier to find than 5.56? Idk I am indecisive.

.300 Blackout Keeps Calling My Name

The .300 Blackout cartridge is one of those calibers that people love to hate. It’s a short range cartridge for the most part with maximum effective range out to maybe 200 yards depending on the load of course. The .300 Blackout has been around for a couple of decades now but really came into it’s own probably 10-12 years ago. You can use bullet weights ranging from 110 grain all the way up to 220 grain. Barrel lengths are also very wide ranging in length. Barrels typically are very short, as short as 7.5 inches all the way up to 16 inch barrels. Most common though you’ll see the .300 Blackout being used in the shorter barrel variety at around 10 inches or less. Unlike the 5.56 cartridge in which the case is roughly based off of, the powder from the .300 Blackout fully burns in these shorter barrel lengths. There’s really no advantage at the longer 16 inch barrel length in terms of velocity. Another advantage of the .300 Blackout is how well they are to suppress. The larger bullets will run subsonic so adding a suppressor makes these run very comfortably quiet which is great on your hearing.

I built the very first .300 Blackout build about 10 years ago. I picked up a receiver and most of the small parts from Brownells. I went with an 8.5” barrel to make a .300 Blackout pistol version that I could later suppress. My ultimate goal for this particular build was to use it for a short range deer hunting rig. I topped it off with a Leupold Mark AR 1.5-4x LPVO optic and to this day that optic is still on this particular setup. It’s been one heck of a deer setup too as I’ve harvested a number of deer over the years with this build. Before I added a suppressor I was using Barnes 110gr but once suppressed I switched over to the Hornady 190gr SubX loads which run super well. All of the deer I’ve harvested have been under 100 yards and I’ve never lost one. The second build I did was a Brownells BRN-180 with an Aluma Hyde camouflage finish. Love that thing! Being piston driven, it’s a smooth shooter always running any loads I put through it including my .300 Blackout reloads. Speaking of reloads, the .300 Blackout is a reloader’s dream with so many recipes and components available. I’ve specifically concentrated on the heavy 200gr stuff, but there’s plenty of other options. You can even take 5.56 brass and trim resize them for .300 Blackout if needed.

So what’s next on the .300 Blackout agenda? I’ve been considering another .300 Blackout build just because I love them so much. It always excited me to talk .300 Blackout with folk. One thought I’ve had was to build another Geissele SBR but in .300 Blackout for a defensive rifle. Another idea that I’ve had is to do another BRN-180, but this time a purpose built defensive setup using the ADM BRN-180 lower receiver. Wherever this next .300 Blackout project takes me I’m sure it’ll be epic!

A thought just popped into my head. I wonder how well a suppressed Steyr AUG would perform in .300 blackout. I just looked it up and I guess they just got announced back in October. They are coming "sometime" but no idea when.

Being a bullpup the AUG is already really compact even with a 16" barrel, but the barrel protrudes several inches past the foregrip. I'll bet you could chop the barrel down to 12" and get an even tighter OAL compared to an AR pistol. My one concern was the action of the gun cycling with the ejection port right next to your ear. That's probably still gonna suck. I was looking this thing up and apparently because of the AUG's gas design it might not even cycle reliably with low pressured subsonics. I imagine Steyr could just eliminate the gas system entirely making it a spring assisted straight pull bolt action. That would be a lot faster than other suppressed bolt actions like the Q Mini Fix. Since the charging handle is up front by the foregrip and designed to be worked with your support hand I like that a lot more than a traditional bolt action.

But on the other hand that's such a niche role I doubt Steyr would have much of a market especially when AUGs are so expensive and the trigger is so awful.

Not such a big deal when you’re comparing a 1″ drift to a 1.6″ drift at 100 yards in a 10 mph crosswind, but considerably better at 500 yards where the 223 will drift around 30″ compared with the Blackout at 50″. The high speed and short time to target also helps the 223 in wind drift, where it beats the 300 Blackout by around 50%-80% depending on range. That makes getting hits on man sized targets with the 223 at 500 yards fairly easy with a good rest, but considerably more frustrating with the 300 Blackout, especially if you have errors in your ranging. By the time we’re at 500 yards, the 300 Blackout is well past 90″ down compared with a 223 at around 50″, or about half the drop. While the 223 crosses the 10″ down mark at a barely-better 320-340 yards compared with the 275 on the 300 Blackout, it stays much flatter further out. For boar at less than 100 yards, it’d work a treat and they wouldn’t know what hit them if you ran the subsonic rounds with a suppressor. It’s also far lower in energy than I’m comfortable using on a deer. Making an accurate hit at 200 yards with a subsonic round is a bit of fantasy, because you’re looking at 30+ inches of drop even if you sighted at 100 yards. The tougher part to account for on these heavier bullets is the rainbow trajectory. Wow, so little drop in velocity, but I guess that’s what happens when it’s poking along so slowly that wind resistance is minimal. Unless you can range accurately, it’s going to get very tough making hits past 300 yards. Zeroed for 100 yards, you’re at 10″ low by about 275. It generates a bit more energy at the muzzle than 223 and uses sane speeds, so I think it’d be a better close range deer cartridge than the 223. Very similar to ballistics on the 7.62×39, but lagging in power at 100-150 yards. It’s important to separate the 110 grain supersonic round vs the 200+ grain subsonic rounds due to their very different ballistic profiles.Įffectively, it’s a 100 yard cartridge for hunting deer.

Types of Calibers

Depending on whether the caliber was designed for use with a handgun or a rifle, it might seem easy to break down bullet caliber sizes. As obvious as it seems on the surface, there are weapons in what were traditional pistol calibers and rifle calibers that were once strictly rifle calibers, but those lines have blurred across the board in recent years.

As a result, buyers of suppressors should know what these terms mean and, more importantly, not get hung up on the calibers of the bullets.

Common Bullet Caliber Sizes

In the United States, the 22 long rifle is the most popular round (unless panic buying is kicking in). In addition to its name, novices can be confused by the fact that it is referred to as a "long rifle" yet can be fired through pistols and revolvers as well as rifles. This caliber has a small size, is widely available, has a low noise signature, and is probably one of the most useful and least expensive.

Choosing the Right Suppressor for the Caliber Size

You might think it would be obvious to choose a suppressor with the same caliber size as your gun. Some shooters will understand this, but not everyone. The majority of shooters use the same caliber size for rifles and pistols. The choice is easy if both 9mm pistol caliber size and 5.56 rifle caliber size suppressors meet those needs.

Fortunately, there are a lot of shooters who have a wide range of rifle and pistol calibers, and shooting suppressors and seeing how effective they are leads a shooter to want to suppress every firearm he or she owns, regardless of its size.

Many people would simply buy a suppressor of the caliber size they need and call it a day if suppressors were more readily available or did not require a $200 tax stamp. As of now, America does not have that benefit.

If you are just starting out, the answer is simple: use the caliber size that gives you the most options. For this reason, we recommend a rimfire caliber suppressor, a pistol caliber suppressor, and a .308 suppressor strong enough to suppress a .30 caliber rifle that is quite powerful.
