I’m not a fan of Filipino noon shows, but this episode really stuck with me. Vice Ganda here, rebukes Anne Curtis’ and a contestant’s argument that the poor remain poor because they are lazy. For him, especially as someone with the rags to riches narrative, his success does not discredit the hard work of farmers who are cheated by unfair pricing and monopoly in agribusiness. He also shared that in the past, he used to think the same way as well. However, he now realized that it is the people with leverage who are constraining others. Injustice and inequity is still prevalent as one can observe in the school setting, for example. The rich are typically labeled the brightest minds for they can afford private tutors and have access to the internet and academics materials. Although there is a right to education, many are still at a disadvantage due to the high cost of education.
WHAT. A. DRAG. I know, but I wanted to use this as an example in order for us to better understand the habitus of two different sides of the same coin. What has led me to my current disposition? What has led the Women of Buklod to theirs?
When I first signed up for LB01, I did not expect that I would be able to learn more than I already knew. Being a female, I have always thought that I’ve had a clear picture of the plight of women. I was, of course, proven wrong. One’s mere similarity with another does not immediately entail a clear understanding of another’s situation.
The women of Buklod ng Kababaihan were former sex workers in Olongapo. Sex tourism was prominent in their city, especially during the time of the U.S. military in the Subic Bay Naval Base. Its closure after the American Occupation, however, did not abolish the bars and clubs that have made their niche. Instead, only the clientele of the so-called Sin City changed.
Ate Jen (not real name), Ate Apple (not real name), to name a few, were strong women. Behind their smiles, however, are lingering stories of pain and abuse. Belonging mostly from the marginalized sectors, these women were the breadwinner in the family. Some of them were even sold by Mothers to the sex trafficking ring or were molested by their family members. Most of them, due to the violence and harassment experienced in their families, ran away. This is where the women were unfortunately reeled into sex work. Ate Apple, one of the oldest in the group, gave birth to a half-American who will never get to know his father. Ate Jen, the Buklod member I got to talk a lot with, shared that she made a round with all the abuses one could ever think about. Due to lacking educational attainment, Ate Jen and many others were unable to land on jobs that could satisfy the needs of everyone in the family. For Ate Jen, specifically, it meant going home and not being able to feed the mouths of her 6 children, her relatives, and her husband. Thus, she was pushed into the world of an “entertainer”. For some, however, sex work was a choice. It was a chance to explore their sexuality whilst earning income. Unfortunately, this entailed contracting sexually transmitted diseases, unfair treatment in the workplace, and abuse.
Raised by Catholic parents, Ate Jen was a devout Catholic. Thus, when she was finally able to liberate herself from the horrors of the growing sex industry, she vowed to give back to society. Along with many others, Ate Jen volunteers in the programs of Buklod ng Kababaihan in order to support sex workers and to help their families as well. Buklod ng Kababihan wants to highlight that there are other opportunities for women to earn money. At the same time, they understand the reasons for many to continue sex work. Thus, they want to protect the rights of sex workers as well. Roughly translated, I remember Ate Joy telling us that before she was aided by others, she lived a life in submission. Now, although barely scraping by, Ate Jen says she is the happiest she can ever be now that she spends her time with her children, works an honest job as a janitress, and helps other women through rallying and working for Buklod.
Pushed by their harsh environment to be tough and independent, these women are the epitome of true grit. They have learned their ways in order to survive. Cunning, bold, fearless – such words barely justify the strength of the women of Buklod. Seeing them laugh and stand proud, it makes one forget that once upon a time, these women felt that at a point in their lives, they were hopeless. With no authority figure to guide them and barely any support felt as a child, these women were forced into maturity at such a young age. This makes me ponder about the great class disparity here in the Philippines. Every night for nineteen years, I came home to loving parents and a hearty meal. Unknowingly, on the other side of the wall, there were families of a dozen sharing a cup of noodles to warm themselves as they slept at streets, with lampposts as their only light.
I have always labeled myself as belonging to the middle class or the comfortable living standard. I never appreciated what we had because I always thought that it was not enough. We weren’t rich. We just had enough to feed our mouths and pay our tuition. My parents grew up in poor families. My mom used to sell ice candy and banana cue when she was twelve. My father was a caretaker of houses every summer during his childhood to help his parents. Thus, I was shaped to think that I needed to work hard so that I may be able to repay my parents. Although my parents did a good job of alleviating our standard of living, some of my relatives weren’t fortunate enough. Thus, I was encouraged to study hard. Even my drive as a Management Engineering student is stirred by my hopes of a better future not only for my children but for my relatives as well. Although my parents grew up with parents of the working-class, perhaps the reason they have never raised a hand on my sister and I, or that they value education and hard worker, no matter what the cost, is attributed to their upbringing. Although I never got the chance to be close with my grandparents before their passing, I heard of their stories. They might be tough at times, but they worked hard for the future of my parents. Thus, I believe that my profound interest in socioeconomic issues or politics, in academics, and my self-direction and autonomy is a product of the structured and structuring structure of my habitus.
Although at some point, some women of Buklod shared the same story as my parents, my parents had different social capital. They were influenced by scholars in the family. My granddads were engineers and my grandma was a teacher. They were low in economic capital, yes, but the similarity in their demand and resource was offset by the great force backed by the environment. For my parents, they valued education and they wanted to be part of the corporate world or at least to move up from being blue-collared workers. Ate Jen and Ate Apple didn’t have that kind of support. In their respective fields, actors such as their families and friends played a role in their transformation, in the context of my parents, or preservation, in the situation of the sex workers, of their social hierarchy. Thus, my current disposition is brought about by the earned privilege I have as bestowed by my parents. For many others, however, the life they live today as a combination of the life they were born to and of the oppressive system of our society.
In the end, it all boils down to us as members of our society. Do we live for ourselves, or do we live for the greater good? If we all take our time to reflect and see the consequences of our actions, we will soon be able to realize that we are often clouded by notions of greed and thirst for greatness. When we soon stop ourselves from clinging to be the best among the rest, that is when we soon see that there need not be the best. What we need as a society is to be able to cater to each and every one. Perhaps, if we are open to such concept, then maybe the term marginalized will be nonexistent as well. In a documentary I have watched entitled “Walang Rape sa Bontoc”, I realized that if we are able to strengthen our ideals of equity and respect, then concepts such as the poor, violence, rape, abuse, discrimination, and many more, would never have been created or would have no use for at all. It is a long journey to such dream. Too idealistic would be a phrase for many. However, I do believe that no matter what the cost or no matter how long it takes, if we all see through our materialistic desires, we may be able to find ourselves as one with everybody else. This is what Binhi has made me see. I never thought that I’d ever quote Vice Ganda or use his philosophy for any circumstance at all, but truth be told, it is in our hands as people of privilege to help others to stand and grow as well.

SBMA posts record-high PHP387-M income in January
SBMA posts record-high PHP387-M income in January
SUBIC BAY FREEPORT – Boosted by a resurging seaport trade, the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) recorded an income of PHP387 million last January, the highest monthly revenue ever recorded in the Subic agency’s almost 30 years of history.
SBMA chair and administrator Wilma T. Eisma said on Monday the operating revenue posted in January 2022 was higher by 92 million, or 31 percent, compared to that in the same period last year.
The highest monthly revenue previously recorded by the SBMA was PHP358 million in “pre-pandemic” June 2019.
The other record highs were PHP343 million in December 2021; PHP337 million in October 2020; PHP324 million in October 2018; and PHP298 million in July 2017.
This record-breaking income in January, Eisma said, was accompanied by other positive indicators: an 11-percent increase in operating expense that was higher by PHP10 million; 41-percent growth in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization; and a 20-percent increase in net income before tax with subsidy, which at PHP222 million was higher by PHP38 million.
Eisma also said SBMA’s seaport operations alone contributed PHP221.4 million, with PHP91.62 million from cargo charges; SBMA shares from terminal income --PHP75.32 million; leases and rentals -- PHP34.17 million; and vessel charges --PHP12.28 million.
“We are hoping that this January, record will be a foretaste of what’s to come in the succeeding months, as we ease down into normalcy with the waning Covid-19 pandemic,” Eisma said in a media interview.
The SBMA, she added, has set its sights higher this year, especially with seaborne trade, after realizing an actual increase in container cargo traffic even at the height of the pandemic last year.
According to a profit and loss statement from the SBMA Financial Planning and Budget Department, other than the PHP221 million from seaport operations, the agency’s January 2022 revenue of PHP387 million was enhanced by PHP111 million in land and building leases; PHP28 million in regulatory income; PHP8 million in housing leases; PHP6 million in airport operations; PHP.67 million in tourism collections; and PHP12 million in miscellaneous income.
Although land and building leases suffered a 1.8 percent decrease from its 2020 level of PHP113 million, it still contributed PHP64.73 million in land leases and PHP45.98 million in building leases this year, said SBMA budget officer Edith Marzal.
The slight decline in land and building leases was easily offset by a 65 percent increase in seaport income, a 35 percent rise in housing leases, and a 20 percent growth in miscellaneous income, she added.
Marzal also said SBMA's airport operations income likewise showed a 6 percent increase in January 2022 compared to last year’s record, while regulatory fees grew by 8 percent, and tourism income by 48 percent.
Meanwhile, the SBMA reported an aggregate 11 percent increase in its expense accounts with PHP67 million in manpower payroll services; PHP12 million in debt servicing; PHP10 million in occupancy costs; PHP1 million in repair and maintenance; PHP.07 million in advertising and promotion; and PHP14 million in various services.
The single biggest item in SBMA expenses was manpower cost for regular employees, which stood at PHP64.7 million, followed by contractual services at PHP14 million. (PNA)

Seasaw and Twirl Slide

5. Mga Matitinding Aktibidad
3- Way Zipline

80 Hectares Contiguous Property for Leisure Residential Development in Hermosa, Bataan, Central Luzon.
Agricultural estate, which we call Hermosa Hills, is approximately 80 hectares of contiguous titled land located in the Barangay of Mabiga, in the Municipality of Hermosa, Province of Bataan. This farm estate, which consists of 11 land titles, lies along the foothills of the Mount Natib Mountain range at the very edge of the Bataan national Park. It is crossed by the scenic Bucayo River and adjoins the Bataan National Park. The location has storybook views of the Bataan National Park, Mt. Arayat, Mt. Natib, Mt. Malasimbu, and the Pinatubo Mountain range.
This forested estate, which now serves as a cattle ranch and cashew nut plantation, is mostly rolling terrain lined with plateaus and springs. It is bounded on the west by the Subic Bay Freeport Zone and on the south by the Bataan National Park. The site’s elevation ranges from 80 to 200 meters above sea level.
We envision to develop this estate into a master planned leisure community. The site is expandable to 120 hectares to accommodate additional amenities such as a golf course and water park.
The Municipality of Hermosa is best known for the Hermosa Ecozone Industrial Park located in Barangay Palihan. It is accessible via the Dinalupihan exit of SCTEX. Bgy. Tipo, Hermosa is the gateway to the Subic Bay Freeport. Bgy. Mabiga, Hermosa has been identified as the eco-tourism zone of the municipality. Its most popular tourist attraction is Puntabelle Resort located in Sitio Lambang, Bgy. Mabiga. However, in the future, there will also be an industrial estate in Bgy. Mabiga that lies along SCTEX. There are on-going negotiations with NLEX Corporation for a Mabiga, Hermosa Exit from the SCTEX.
Barangay Mabiga was named after the native plant locally known as BIGA, also known by landscapers as Colocasia or Elephant Ears, which grows abundantly throughout the area. The barangay is crossed by the bucolic Bucayo River which originated from the Bataan National Park which is also part of Bgy. Mabiga. There is on-going construction by the DPWH of a new national road linking Bgy Mabiga to Bgy Palihan to the east and the Subic Bay Freeport and the seaside community of Morong, Bataan to the west.
Our estate can be accessed via Jose Abad Santos Avenue (also known as the Olongapo-Gapan Highway). From SCTEX, you exit either at Dinalupihan or Subic, then drive towards Jose Abad Santos Avenue (JASA) and then enter the property via fully cemented 12-meter-wide barangay road. You may drive into the property from either the east or west sides of the property.

Nothing wrong with DAR out-of-town conferences
#PHnews: Nothing wrong with DAR out-of-town conferences
MANILA – Malacañang on Tuesday said it sees nothing wrong with the Department of Agrarian Reform’s (DAR) conduct of out-of-town conferences since it is allowed under regulations approved by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID).
This, after the DAR, led by Secretary John Castriciones, conducted a 2020 Year-end Assessment and 2021 Planning Conference for Luzon Group at Traveler’s Hotel, Subic Bay Free Port Zone (SBFZ) in Zambales from Jan. 25 to 28.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said business-related gatherings, seminars and other meetings, incentives, conferencing, and exhibition (MICE)-related activities may now be conducted in areas under the modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) at a 50 percent venue capacity.
MICE-related activities may also be conducted in areas under general community quarantine (GCQ) at a 30 percent venue capacity.
“In-allow po ng IATF iyong mga holding ng mga trainings na ganito provided susundin iyong maximum capacity (The IATF allows the holding of trainings like this provided they follow the maximum capacity),” he said.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) earlier said that the conduct of MICE-related activities was greatly affected by the restrictions imposed to curb the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
Currently, Metro Manila and Davao City will remain under GCQ until the end of February.
The Cordillera region, Tacloban City, Iligan City, and the provinces of Batangas, Davao del Norte, and Lanao del Sur will also be placed under GCQ until the end of the month.
The rest of the country will remain under the least restrictive MGCQ.
Under the guidelines for tourists visiting Subic Bay Freeport Zone, guests will be subjected to health checks for symptoms of Covid-19 at the sentries/gates of SBFZ and tourist establishments/facilities.
Persons whose temperature exceeds 37.5 degrees Centigrade, despite repeated scan, shall be denied entry if at the gate/border or endorsed to the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Public Health and Safety Department by the establishment visited.
Visitors from GCQ areas will be required to provide a health certificate by a public or private hospital or local government unit health office within three days prior to arrival while visitors coming from MGCQ areas will only be required to provide their proposed itinerary. (PNA)

This is Baloy Beach, also known as Baloy Long Beach. It is a beachfront community near Barrio Barretto in Olongapo City, Subic Bay, Philippines. It's only 160.2km away from Manila and that's approximately 2hrs and 30min drive via North Luzon Expressway. Road trip tip: There are numerous affordable homestays and transient houses along the beach so you can just pick and choose on where you want to stay. You can also rent cottages if you're just planning to stay during the day. You'll also see some public wet & dry markets along the way, so if you want to buy some snacks, beer, and seafood you can get it from the market place. You can also cook your seafood just there at the beachfront! This is a perfect place to visit over the weekend together with your family and friends! #TripNiJof #JofyCreams #Philippines #ItsMoreFunInThePhilippines #WowPhilippines #Tourism #Tourist #Travel #TravelForFood #Migrationology #Traveler #Beach #Sun #Salt #Waves #Fun #Happiness #Asia #Asian #SubicBay #Olongapo #Luzon #TravelGuide #TravelBlog #TravelPhoto

The Maldives is a tropical nation with more than 200 islands on the Indian Ocean. It has more than 132 resorts on those islands and collects over 90% of its government tax revenue comes from import duties and tourism-related taxes. As a mass tourism destination, Maldives is staged to provide standardized experience to all the tourists. Besides how the mass tourists are served identically as the indifferent groups, Maldives is also a ‘place to play’ as it helps tourists get the gaze of escape. From my personal experience of visiting there in 2010, I stayed at one of those identical resorts and experience the sun, sea, and sand vacation as they staged. However, when I went to its capital Malé, not performing as a typical mass tourist, I encountered with the local residents and their daily lives, not living fancy lives as we imagined. There, I realized the huge gap between performing in the tourism industry and the actual life of local people. The Maldives, as well as other mass tourism destinations, organized the gaze of escape by providing standardized experience for all tourists. Mass tourists are expected to perform collaboratively on the stage. The employees within those resorts are normally English-speaking ‘foreign hosts’. They aim to provide standardized service to those English-speaking tourists to fit with their imagination of a mass tourism destination. Indifferent mass tourists and well-trained hosts perform and stage this ‘tropical paradise’ coherently.
Ecotourists are global travelers that are generally financially successful and are able to afford foreign travel to exotic locations. Ecotourists are often environmentally conscious, and use their wealth to seek these ‘untouched’ destinations. A Rare, and exotic destination that has been gaining global popularity in the past 30 years has been the Asian islands, The Philippines.
The Philippines has large amount of Ecotourist because of the beautiful geography. The Philippines are made up of over 7,500 islands and holds . The Philippines has gradually increased in its popularity and global desire to travel for its beautiful ecosystem. According to the Department of Tourism, in 2017 over 6.5 Million tourists traveled to the beaches of the The Philippines. There are many types of nature tourism that goes on in the Asian Islands of the The Philippines, there is Bacuit Bay Archipelago, Ifugao Rice Terraces, and there infamous turquoise beaches.
Both problems and benefits have come from the increase in popularity for tourist & travelers. Although, major profits are coming from foreign travelers, they are buying a quick ticket to destroying their home on the islands. In 2018, Boracay, a tiny island once considered among the world's most idyllic - but closed to visitors for repair due to the effects of overtourism. The island is simply trading off the environment they once and currently have for a different asset.
Organize Space: The Philippines has organized its space around the coastal, and environmental destinations with greater populations around those areas.
Staging & Performing Tourist: Like other environmental tourist destinations, the local community forges their public perception by over emphasizing certain aspects of their day-to-day life like bonfires on the beach, partying on the beach, exploring the islands with boats, etc. All of these aspects of travel are exaggerated to tend to the foreign tourist.
Subic Freeport Jungle Tour in Philippines is an ecotourism destination attraction by the Jungle Environment and Survival Training (JEST) camp in line with emerging tourism trends. In the early 1990s, the former Subic Bay Naval Base were converted into a tourism center. The Jungle tour is staged to provide differentiated and unique experience to a small group of travelers. This is a place in play as it helps tourists to get the gaze of military. Tourists embody both U.S. military and local indigenous masculinity by playing at being natural warriors, tourists at the JEST camp get to play soldier and go native. Aeta men teach the jungle survival skills such as to find clean water, food and medicine; and “going native” to find and cook food in the forbidding environment by the experience of the mini jungle demonstration. There is also a “standard operating procedure” that they use for this demonstration. It asks tourists to identify with successful acquisition of these unique skills instead of required them for survival.
Today, about two hundred to three hundred tourists a week come to JEST, the rain forest has been a staging ground for hosts jungle skills demonstrations, hikes, and overnight camping trips for ecotourists. The first tourists helped the Aeta people through tough lean time. The local residents, Aeta people use the jungle survival skills to adapt to a new economy. Those local people perform to be good at jungle surviving but actually not all Aeta people are like that. They are just serving the tourism industry as how the travelers wish to see, like a “standard operating procedure” used for a demonstration. The labor here are American soldiers who have visited based in the Philippines and Aeta people, it means that the local Aeta people can use tourism to improve their economic situation, also local people pay to sustainability and indigenous conservation to maintain the local environment and attract more tourists by keeping all those infrastructure in order to meet the needs of the tourists.
Contrast: While Mass tourism in the Maldives is promoted to all types of travelers trying to provide a standardized experience for all, The Philippines has many different types of tourists and tailored to more of nature tourists.
Compare: Both The Philippines and the Maldives are “Places to Play” and provides a gaze of escape to its tourists. The Philippines and Maldives find similarities when traveling more inland away from tourist destination and seeing the difference between the population that works around tourism and those that do not. They are similar in the way that both societies seem to be staged for the foreign traveler.

Subic Bay - an excellent harbour to its geographical location and serves as the premier yacht racing destination in the Philippines and is truly a sailing haven. Regular regattas are being held in Subic Bay not just to promote its tourism but to enhance yachtsman-ship for international competitions and foster camaraderie among sailors.
It has become a playground for Grand Prix keelboats from various countries as they compete in the prestigious international regattas hosted here in our country.
As we set course to another season of the Philippine Sailing Grand Prix, the annual Commodore’s Cup Regatta that has been attracting hundreds of top-notch sailors from all over the globe has been rebranded as “Chairman’s Cup Regatta” to commemorate the leadership that is at the helm of the agency that has played a significant role in the development of the Subic Bay Freeport and the Special Economic Zone. This event is organized by the Subic Sailing Club headed by Mr. Jun Avecilla, Chairman of the organizing committee.
The inaugural Chairman’s Cup Regatta which took place on April 25-30, 2019, few days after the awarding of the first edition of the Hong Kong to Puerto Galera Yacht Race - a classic 650nm passage to Puerto Galera that ended on April 21, Easter Sunday.
The Chairman’s Cup Regatta envisioned to breed the next generation of sailors that will give pride and honor to our country and will continue our legacy as a maritime nation. “We hope that this event will not only produce a new generation of Filipino sailors but also give honor to our rich maritime heritage,” said Zed Avecilla, Executive Director of the Subic Sailing Club.
Sailing, whether a sport or a recreational activity builds character as the skills acquired go far beyond of controlling a boat that can be applied in real life. It enhances creativity, confidence, teamwork, communication, determination, independence and performance are some of the specific character attributes nurtured through sailing.
The highlight of the Chairman’s Cup Regatta (CCR) is the FarEast 28R One-Design Race with eight boats in the division. Other Keel Boat divisions will include IRC Class 1, IRC Class 2 and Cruising Class. There will also be a Dinghy Division composed of the Optimist Class, Streaker Class and the Oz Gooze Class which took place on April 25-26, 2019. To cap off the event, there will be local and international DJs together with one of the top leading bands in the country.
This 5-day event will attract thousands of Filipino sailors and non-sailors to the most exciting and competitive world of yacht racing in the country with among the top-notch sailors around the globe. It also aims to encourage the general public to know more information about the sport as well as Philippine’s maritime industry and hopefully encourage more people to explore our maritime roots.
