Hello, I want to start off by saying I hope you’re having a good day :)
I’m here to ask if there’s any specifics about the relationship Vlad had with his brothers. It’s noted that he avenged his older brothers death, is there any documentation that gives clues to what the Dracula brothers were like? Why Radu had went against Vlad or anything? Apologies if you have answered this in the past!
Thank you for all the education you bring, truly it is a fascination and super fun to read!
Salut! Vlad had a complicated relation with his brother just like any other medieval royal family. On a hand his your kin from the same blood, on the other hand he is a future candidate for the throne. So it was quite a neutre relatioship, they didn't love eachother or hated. Radu fought Vlad because they were in the oposite sides, just like why Stefan fought Vlad. It didn't put any bad blood between them. that's how things were back then. So how his brothers were from the documents: Radu: He is quite cold and blank really, he alaways stick with the standard letters, never added something different to them so we can't make up an idea of his personality, he took as hostage the wives and children of the boyars that helped Vlad, He wasn't as respected as Vlad since the brasovans refuse to pay their debts to him, he would use treats like "I have power from the turks" and the ottomans described him as quite submissive (tho they describe everyone like that). He was a good ruler tho, improve stuff, build churches, didn't sold the country to the ottomans (always a + in my book) but quite an empty ruler. Mircea: Mircea is a little different, He was a warrior like Vlad, He wanted kinda wanted to protect his brother but also not to, he was doing what it was told to. The chronicler Jean the wavrin talked with him:
“In the meantime, the son of the lord of Wallachia went to visit the lord of Wavrin, to whom, after greeting him, had an interpreter say that he was planning an enterprise against the Turks: and, if he promised him not to judging him badly, he would tell him his secret; which the lord of Wavrin absolutely swore to him. And then the interpreter, having received instructions from the son of Wallachia, spoke in this way: "My father sent for me and told me that, if I do not avenge him of that subachi of that castle of Georgye (Giurgiu), he will disown me and he no longer considers me his son; because he is the one who betrayed him and who, with a safe conduct from the Turk, made him go to the aforementioned Turk, then took him prisoner to the castle of Gallipoli, where he held him for a long time with chains on his legs . Now the fact is that he and his Saracens have now surrendered to my father, their lives and possessions must be spared, and they must be taken to Vulgarye (Bulgaria); and I will go, along with 2000 Wallachians, two leagues from here, cross the river and set up an ambush on their path: so, when they try to go to Nicopolis, I will be in front of them, so I will put them all to death . ” A thing to which the aforementioned lord of Wavrin did not answer a single word, neither good nor bad. So the aforementioned son of Wallachia went away, to go and carry out his enterprise.“ In the same chronicle Jean the Wavrin actually tells Mircea about Radu being molested which I find quite a weird topic to talk about with a 15-year old boy in his way to butcher a garnizon of ottomans and just came back from a crusade but alright. At Varna Mircea was the only guy that did something, as much as Murad had to threaten him that will kill his 2 brothers if he continues From the chronicle of Beheim (He's a poet, the author of most of the brutal things you read on the internet about Vlad. so most likely as trustworthy as a Russian news station): " Many of them, a countless number, were killed. When the Emperor(Murad II) heard what great losses his men were suffering, he sent a message to Trakal(Dracul/Mircea): if he did not stop fighting before more messages came to him, he would kill his two brothers whom he had captured. He would do this if he did not show restraint in battle." Which Mircea did, tho this action had drastic consqueces. here is a video about Mircea I don't think Vlad was bother that much about Mircea's death but how was he killed, all people with noble blood like the boyars and ruler must be killed by sword (decapitation), when the pargars of Brasov buried Mircea alive they tehinically said they don't consider the Basarabs nobles. Vlad IV The Monk: This guy most likely was just a random monk and had nothing to do with the Draculesti, could be a step brother or something but it just speculations, Vlad mentions him in a letter from 1457 martie 14: "...But now we have heard and fully understood from the people of this priest of the Wallachians, who calls himself son of a lord..." Here Vlad IV did something unfanthomly based, he left. He quit being a pretender to the throne and went back to being a monk. He will become a ruler in 1481. He was a nice guy, didn't fight, write letters a lot, build and gifted churches (many churches), rule for 13 years, lived to be 71 (Which is the supreme proof that he was not a draculesti, all of them die in their 40s or younger, even Mircea the elder(BTW He's called "The Elder" because of Vlad's brother Mircea, there was a young one and an elder one)). So basically all of them got along pretty well, tho it was quite hard to be a brother back then, Ask Mehmed's brothers. Their relationship was sufocanting to say the least. I think Vlad liked his sister the most, Alishandra. He gave her 2 villages and married her to a boyar from prahova, pure brotherly love if you ask me.

Un ragazzo viene trasportato in un magico mondo fantastico con l'abilità di importare oggetti dalla Terra come bottino ottenuto dai mostri sconfitti.
Tumblr media

If I was to make a video talking about Mircea II Dracula would you guys be interested in it? Is there any interest in Vlad's Older brother who was blinded and buried alive at 19? Here is something about Mircea (Who was 15 at the time) From The chronicles of Jean de Vavrin: "In the meantime, the son of the lord of Wallachia went to visit the lord of Wavrin, to whom, after greeting him, had an interpreter say that he was planning an enterprise against the Turks: and, if he promised him not to judging him badly, he would tell him his secret; which the lord of Wavrin absolutely swore to him. " A thing to which the aforementioned lord of Wavrin did not answer a single word, neither good nor bad. So the aforementioned son of Wallachia went away, to go and carry out his enterprise." The outcome of that battle + His reaction after Jean informs him that Radu have been molested by Mehmed + other information will be in that video (If you guys want it) chronicles of Jean de Vavrin: https://archive.org/search.php?query=Jehan%20de%20Wavrin

Ottoman intrigues: two cases of conspiracy compared. History repeats itself in the lives of fathers and sons.
When facing the study of the biographies of the Voivodes of Wallachia Vlad II Dracul and his son, Vlad III Drakulya, it is impossible not to notice how both, at some point in their lives, were lured into two almost identical traps respectively by the sultans Murad II and Mehemed II, also father and son. This singular coincidence struck me, prompting me to write this article, in the first part of which, following the chronological order, I will deal with the case of Vlad Dracul and Murad II.
Part one. Vlad Dracul and Murad II: the invitation to the banquet.
To narrate this episode, I will rely on the text of the "Anchiennes cronicques d'Engleterre", by Jeahn de Wavrin, seigneur du Forestel, fl. 1415-1471; Dupont, Mlle. L. M. E; Chastellain, Georges, 1405? -1475, in the edition of 1858-63, Publisher Paris, Mme Ve J. Renouard. According to many scholars, this version of the facts is highly plausible, although others exist. It should be noted that, precisely on the occasion of the events narrated, the very young Vlad, the future Drakulya, and his half-brother Radu were taken as hostages by Murad II. But let us now hear from the voice of the Lord of Wavrin the account of events.
(Linguistic note: some peculiarities of the language are due to the time of the text, to which I have tried to remain as faithful as possible.)
“ [1442]
1103. About how the great Turk sent word to the lord of Wallachia to go and talk to him and how, treacherously, he imprisoned him.
Around the time we are talking about, there was a lord of the Turks named Moradbay (Murad II), who, since he learned that in the great Wallachia there was a lord named Velacq de Vaivode (Vlad Dracul, voivode of Wallachia), very famous for his valor and his wisdom, who ruled a strong country, rich and very populated by great and powerful men, something of which the Turk was beginning to be envious, he wished to annex and submit to himself and to his lordship this lord of the Wallachians and all his country; so, to do it more easily, he sent one of his subachi (commander of 100 men), very cunning and eloquent, as ambassador to the aforementioned lord of Wallachia: the aforementioned subachi traveled so much, that he arrived in the country of the Wallachians, and committed himself so much that he reached the place where this lord lived in those days. He offered him by the great Turk, his master, great gifts, greetings and wonderful offers of friendship, saying that the aforementioned Turk, his lord, strongly desired to make a pact of love and alliance with him; and that, to obtain this, the aforementioned great Turk begged him, whenever possible, to join him in the city of Andernopoly (Adrianople); and so that he would go there more willingly, hoping to be safe, this subachi gave him a safe conduct from his master, the great Turk. This lord of Wallachia, having heard the embassy made to him by the aforementioned subachi, by the great Turk, received it with many honors: he too made great gifts and presents. And, concerning what the subachi had proposed, he sought advice from the princes and barons of his reign, discussing what was best to do; and they strongly advised him not to go in person, but to send only an embassy, in order to hear and learn how this Turk wanted to have his friendship and alliance. However, when the subachi, the ambassador, heard this answer, he was not very satisfied: instead, on several occasions, he spoke privately with the lord of Wallachia and, soothing him with words, swore that his master, the aforementioned great Turk, wished to see him in person in order to pay him great honors and great homages: saying that he would not hesitate or absolutely postpone his departure, because he would lead him safely. And in the end the subachi spoke so much, using his fine words and coaxing, that the aforementioned lord of Wallachia, abandoning the advice and decisions he had previously made with the princes and barons of his country, decided to go with the aforementioned subachi towards the great Turk, at Andernopoly (Adrianople); who, initially, welcomed him with great honors. He was lodged, this Turk, outside the city, in a great number of tents and pavilions, himself and his entire entourage. And the day after the arrival of the lord of the Wallachians, the aforementioned great Turk offered him a great banquet and a great feast, to which he invited all his subachi and captains, to celebrate this lord of Wallachia. And this great Turk stood under a pavilion, all covered with crimson velvet, arranged as on a stand, adorned and covered with rich cushions and decorated with drapery of gold and silk, and this pavilion was about ten feet high, protruding in forward and elevated so that he (the Turk) could see his men and captains; and outside this pavilion sat on the ground, on cushions and carpets and golden drapes, the aforementioned lord of Wallachia, to the right of the said Turk, and to his left sat his Bellarbay (beylerbey, the highest rank of administrators local), which is equivalent to saying lord of lords; and all the other nobles were seated as in a great caravan (assembly), divided to the right and to the left, so that the great Turk could see them all while they ate. And when the meal was finished, the aforesaid Turk retired to his great tents; then, immediately afterwards, he sent the aforementioned subachi, who had brought the lord of Wallachia, to declare him his prisoner, which he did: and led him into the castle of Gallipoli, which is located on the Strait of Rommenie (Rommenia; Dardanelli),
which we call the arm Saint George, the place where he locked him up and put him in chains. But all those who were with the aforementioned lord of Wallachia to accompany him, the Turk made them lead and guide to their country, where they recounted the great betrayal perpetrated by the aforementioned great Turk against the person of their lord, something of which all his subjects were grieved; because they thought and imagined within themselves that the aforementioned Turk had committed this betrayal, hoping that, without a shepherd or guardian, he would easily conquer them: because the aforesaid lord of Wallachia had then only one son (note: Mircea) aged between 13 and 15 years, who was unable to rule such a realm, especially in times of war; therefore such great pain spread throughout the country of Wallachia. And what they imagined about the Turk declaring war on them was true, as experience proved: because this great Turk very soon assembled a large army of 100,000 Turks, of which Beilarbay was commander (note: Sehabbedin Pasha, Beylerbey of Rumelia), who, with all this great army, crossed the river Dunoue (Danube). So he entered the country of Wallachia: when the Wallachians found out about it, they gathered as many men as possible and appointed among them a captain named Johannes de Hongac (Iancu de Hunedoara; Janos Hunyadi), who was a great lord in that country, and extended his lordship between Hungary and Wallachia, including Transylvania. And since the Wallachians did not feel strong enough to fight against a multitude like that of the Turks, they decided to retreat into the mountains and sent word to those of the plains that men, women, children and their possessions had to save themselves in the mountains, because there were news that the Turks had to cross the Dunoe (Danube) to raid the country, as they did; because they crossed the aforesaid river and captured some Wallachians; in this way they knew that the whole army of the Wallachians of Transylvania was retreating into the mountains. The Wallachians were nowhere to be seen, except their lookouts in the mountains. Therefore this Bellarbay, the day after leaving these mountains, divided his army into three, one part of which he sent to raid the great Wallachia, which is located downstream of the course of the Dunoe (Danube), the other in the country of Transylvania, going up the aforementioned Dunoe (Danube), and the third part he kept it with him to protect his camp. The aforementioned Johanne de Hongnag (Iancu de Hunedoara; Janos Hunyadi), who as we have seen before, was with the Wallachians and Transylvanians, learned that the Turks had divided into three companies, made a quick estimate of their strength, and took the decision with his men to attack, the next day at dawn, the camp of the Turks, who maintained neither guards nor lookouts. So they did as he had decided; and they divided into three battalions, two to attach to each end of the tents, and the other in the middle. And in this way, the Turks were invaded and soon destroyed and killed; but the fugitives headed for the Dunoe (Danube), where some were saved and others ended up drowned.”
Thus, this is the story of the betrayal committed against the Voivode Vlad II Dracul by Sultan Murad II, narrated by the Lord of Wavrin. Innocent victims of this plot were the two children of the Wallachian lord, Vlad and Radu, condemned to spend many years in the hands of the Turks. In the second part, we will see how very similar events took place in the lives of the two heirs of the protagonists of this dramatic episode. Credit: Valeria Petricci In the attached pictures:
