started reading emma by kaoru mori today and by golly. i am not a binger by any means (far from it) but i zoomed through half of the story in a day. it's literally That Good................

and now that I actually know a very little bit about circus I can say the issue with the Greatest Showman (besides other things) is that it attempts to depict the magic of the circus without its sincerity and reality. They claim that they're discussing the circus from within, but the sensationalisation and simplification of characters into often caricature (consider that all the 'freaks' are consistently taken as a single unit beyond Zendaya who is positioned as one of them yet subtly different due to being presented as an 'performer,' which implies that what the others are doing is not a performance despite freakery being something inherently societally constructed and performed) rather depicts how circus is viewed from without, as a place of Wonder and Spectacle rather than as a place of People. By claiming the without is the within, the movie strips itself hollow.

Hopping on the color temperature discourse train to say that I love the mental image of like— reversing the association of red and blue and having blue represent summer temps— thinking of summer blue skies and the ocean. Red for winter temps bringing to mind cheeks red with cold and holly berries and cardinal feathers. Idk I just think that’s neat!

i, too, think it's neat!!! I also just like the idea of-- specifically on the topic planning of Temperature Blanket™ palettes-- not being so literal with "cold" colors and "hot" colors. if you CAN get creative with it, I think it's boring NOT to. It's a year long project, so it needs to be interesting. as an aside, I also like the idea of leaving color palettes behind entirely, and doing a very straightforward gradient scheme as your temperature gauge. Like buying yarns like this that are already dyed into a gradient, and just being like "ok. done."

just pick which end of the spectrum is High temps and which one is Low temps, and get cracking. It doesn't have to be symbolic of the Season the temperatures would occur in at all.

i'm making it my life's mission to get every locked tomb fan to watch arcane because i know if it existed in the early 2010s we would see its influence in tlt. guys this show has literally everything you guys want (spoilers!). a billion scenes of hot muscular women fighting each other and getting beat and bruised and bloody. the most devastating doomed siblings narrative you'll ever see and it only keeps getting worse. skrunkly weird mentally ill teenager with access to explosives who blames herself for her family's deaths and is haunted by their hallucinations. star-crossed angsty lesbian lovers on opposite sides of a class system. orphan CANON BUTCH LESBIAN rebel with a savior complex who is also the eldest daughter, who feels immense guilt and singularly responsible for the socio-political situation of her entire society, who becomes everything she once hated and crashes out spectacularly. the most beautiful woman on earth and she has a gold color palette. the complex politics of capitalist imperialism on a regional level. guy gains healing abilities and accidentally invents a religion out of it. am i not describing the locked tomb right now

they cooked with n’s castle theme it’s like if the piano before cynthia was allowed to play for several minutes for peak dramatic buildup. i mean the overall league theme was good but i was disappointed that the iconic theme i had been told to fear only played for a few dialogue boxes

All of this season’s music embraces Penelope and Colin’s blossoming from friends to lovers.

“It’s a much more lighthearted feeling, I think, overall,” composer Kris Bowers tells Tudum. “There’s obviously the ups and downs that we always have in this show. But with Colin and Pen being friends, with a lot of their interactions having a bit of awkwardness to them — and within this season there are so many stories that we dip into — there’s a lot of fun and lightness that we experience with the music and comedic moments.”

Penelope and Colin’s ups and downs are chronicled in Bowers’ new themes for the characters, both separately and together, which “infused a new feeling into the sound and score for this season,” he says. “My thinking behind Colin and Pen was how much of it was this timidity and this two-steps-forward, one-step-back kind of thing. The theme that I wrote melodically has this shape to it that’s meant to evoke this feeling.”
