Stuff I've Been Reading: February 2024
It was sort of a… not great month for reading, personally. Be prepared for a few, uh, rage-y reviews. The Eye of Night by Pauline J. Alama (2002) Content warnings: ableism, fantasy violence, domestic violence Set in a fantasy world, this story tells of an ex-priest who crosses paths with a beautiful, mysterious fool and a woman with dwarfism who steals a magical artefact and sweeps him up in a…

Stuff I've Been Reading: October 2023
This month’s list of book reviews felt shorter than usual as I was writing it, but then I realized that the last “book” I read was actually five in one (plus a short story). So I actually read eight books total this month, which is pretty dang good for me! Without further ado, here’s October 2023’s Stuff I’ve Been Reading: Sacrament by Clive Barker (1996) Content warnings: pedophilia, animal…

Stuff I've Been Reading: September 2023
Okay, I guess I lied when I said my reading would probably take a dip now that the school year has started and I’m back at work, because it turns out I read a LOT this month–mostly horror and classics–and a lot of them were actually pretty hefty tomes. There’s something about autumn that just makes me want to curl up and read period dramas and spooky stories all day, I s’pose. Honestly, there…

Stuff I've Been Reading: August 2023
This month's reads involve some really great nonfiction, and one self-published fantasy book that sadly disappointed me.
Summer vacation is at an end for me. 😦 My SIBR lists might shorten significantly for the rest of the year now that school is in session and I’m back at work in the library, but I’ll try my best to keep up. This month’s reads involve some really great nonfiction, one awful nonfiction book, another Nightmare Inn book, and one self-published fantasy book that sadly disappointed me. I have a lot to…

Stuff I've Been Reading: June 2023
“I’m so excited to be on summer vacay so I can read more!” I said just one month ago, and then immediately proceeded to read fewer books than I’ve read in any previous month this year. In my defense, one of the books was nearly 500 pages long, and another was 400. So June’s SIBR is short and sweet. The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan (1989) Content warnings: suicide, physical abuse, verbal abuse,…

Stuff I've Been Reading: May 2023
Welcome back to Stuff I’ve Been Reading! 🙂 I’m officially on summer vacation, so I’m looking forward to having time to read so many more books each month. For May, I read a lot of anarchist literature, which will be saved for the forthcoming Comrade Cats series. Kicking off the month with May Day really got me in the mood for some good, meaty, thoughtful philosophy about labor and all that jazz.…

Stuff I've Been Reading: April 2023
I’d like to start sharing some book reviews! The title of this series is inspired by my high school AP Lit teacher, Mrs. Lee, who made us write monthly “Stuff I’ve Been Reading,” or “SIBR” essays. 🙂 (Just note, this series won’t include any anarchist literature I read, as those will be reviewed separately in the upcoming Comrade Cats series.) So, without further ado, here’s the first of…
