I think this is choral arrangement of the same 楊三郎 composition, with lyrics by 呂傳梓, arranged by 蔡昱姍, recorded in Austin, Texas back in 2013 by the 奧斯汀龍吟合唱團 (Austin Chinese Choir):

You mostly hear the similarity in that lovely opening/recurring melody.

TSAI YUCHEN    /    self - para
a reflection on the first time a then-sixteen year old yuchen met his friend from the beach, a girl who had died by way of drowning in the ocean some years prior (this is not mentioned at all in the story, there’s no detailed reference to any death). yuchen, for the record, is utterly unaware of this. to this day, yuchen is wholly not aware of abilities so it might help to read this as though it was written in the future. this is a slightly older yuchen looking back on his memories.
( also, this is an edited version of a short story i submitted for class and that’s why it’s fairly vague and ends abruptly, as it was intended to read as an excerpt of a longer story that i will never write. it is edited because i had to cut a lot of things from the original draft to meet the word count but the version i submitted was also better than the original draft so i decided to just add certain things back into the final version rather than share the messy original.)
Tumblr media
Looking back on it, I never considered my friend from beside the sea might have been dead. I can’t say I’d know right away if I were to meet her for the very first time now either. Maybe you’d work it out much quicker than me but. whether or not it was down to goodhearted ignorance. the thought never crossed my mind. I was only sixteen the first time I saw her but I remember the whole thing clearly, the first time I met her and every other time after that. There are things I’m good at forgetting, like what time I’m meant to show up somewhere and where I put my phone when I’m distracted, but I’ve always been good at remembering people. This might well have been last week.
I had this routine of going to the beach after school and, because I refused to tell anybody why I was going, I felt terribly mysterious. It sort of became this secret rendezvous with myself. The reality, however, was pretty shallow especially compared to what I’d learn in the next few months. You see, this was when I’d first found my love of dance and any time of the year it wasn’t teeming with sun-seeking crowds, the beach became my own personal dance studio.  a year or so before I’d gotten really into dance. I’d lock myself up in my bedroom, copying tutorials on YouTube, and I thought that was private enough. It wasn’t. All it took was for my mum to walk in on me once and that was my perfect little bubble burst. It took me about a year to forgive her for joking about it at a family gathering that same weekend. I remember somebody (some aunt or uncle, I was too dizzy with humiliation to care who it was) saying that it didn’t matter how well I could dance, I was too short for it not to look all wrong and I really took it to heart, swearing through a clenched jaw that I’d grow tall and shock them all. Right now, I’m a whopping five foot six so you can tell this didn’t exactly pan out. From the day of my mum’s intrusion onwards, I’d storm down the road by myself as soon as school ended and it didn’t matter much that I wasn’t spending this time with other kids because most of them didn’t seem to like me much anyway. I never knew why but befriending stray beach spirits probably didn’t help.
This February afternoon was no different than any other. The air was thick with the coarse clammy scent of wet sand, the tang of salt and fish lingering beneath, and the cold bit away at my cheeks until they were red raw. My ears were buzzing with the music blaring through my earphones -- the soundtrack to my dance routine. I was used to staying there all evening and not seeing another soul, besides the odd dog walker, but she had been a surprise. Catching sight of her, I stopped mid-spin but felt my gut go on without me. I stood stock still like the bitter February air had frozen me through in the hopes it wouldn’t look as though I’d just been dancing but, even if I weren’t about as subtle as a foghorn dressed with twinkling fairy lights, the Swoosh-emblazoned footprints dashed and circled across the sand were a dead giveaway. If she thought I was funny, she didn’t laugh. As a matter of fact, she didn’t do anything. Her skin was pallid and her eyes distant and hair clung to her forehead in damp tresses.  I took one good long look at her and instantly took her for someone grim and miserable. A goth, maybe?
Despite my shock, I managed wave to her with a stupid, lopsided grin on my face. Her eyes widened just a fraction and she turned her head away. I sighed for relief, reassured that I wasn’t the only one around here daft enough to believe that standing in the middle of an empty space could hide you from anything. ‘Aren’t you cold?’ I called out. She looked for a moment as though she wanted to scurry off and away from me but she did not move an inch. Despite the dismal weather, she was dressed only in a school uniform, the sleeves short and her legs bare beneath the hem of her skirt. ‘I don’t think you should talk to me’, was her only answer. Her voice was muffled like a person submerged. ‘People don’t talk to me.’ ‘They don’t talk to me either. Are you sure you’re not cold?’ She didn’t answer and hung her head, as if in defeat. I was often told I was bad at recognising boundaries. The weight of coins in my pocket called out to me then, almost like they too were aware that I needed to change the subject, and I was reminded of the van down the street that sold hot snacks all year long. Even when I had no money to spend, I would smile at the man inside, seeing anybody else who spent their Winter by the sea as a kindred spirit. My stomach was reminded of this too and I felt it start to tighten with hunger, like it didn’t think the guilt was working hard enough. ‘Erm, I’m gonna go buy fried chicken,’ I told her, pointing vaguely in the direction of the van. I was eager to calm myself with the smell of grease and sugar, ‘I’ll get you one too.’ Without even raising her head, she shook her head and told me she couldn’t eat them. ‘Ah,’ I said, all sympathetic and understanding, ‘It’s cool, my cousin’s vegan too. I get it.’
And so I sped off, across the sand, up the path and onto the street, my feet thundering against the concrete. I don’t know how long it took me to get there and back but I knew I was developing a stitch in my side. When I did get back the beach was empty yet again, save for me, a piece of fried chicken that was almost the length of my head and a bag of hopefully meat-free fries. I looked around, eyes narrow, trying to work out she possibly could have gone so but for all my efforts, the only footprints I could see were my own.

Studio Visit: Fahr 021.3
If you were lucky enough to stroll around Porto in the spring of 2017 you might have encountered a vast, colorful structure at Largo Amor de Perdição, prompting you to closely examine both your own perception and the urban wonderland you suddenly fell into. Congratulations: you were in the presence of one of FAHR 021.3 creations.
Tumblr media
UFO landed in Porto? Undiscovered creature emerged from the ocean? No, it’s just FAHR 021.3, playing with the idea of heritage | Photo via Archilovers
Porto studio FAHR 021.3 was established by Filipa Frois Almeida and Hugo Reis in 2012. They have been playing with how you see, feel and use the city ever since. In their own words, their work (un)focuses on the space between Art and Architecture, seeking for new solutions on the brink of unexpected. Their view on how our world is constructed by community and heritage results in thought-and-touch provoking interventions able to turn the public space inside-out. On our recent visit to Portugal Architectuul’s team had the opportunity to meet FAHR 021.3 for the first time, and to learn about the studio’s provocative and widely recognised work.
Tumblr media

FAHR 021.3 interest in experimental architecture is articulated through installations designed to permanently alter the urban space. Regardless of how long they last, they stay in people’s memory - along with the questions they asked, or curiosities they addressed.  In 2015 FAHR 021.3 literally illuminated a forgotten ruin in the city center with their Metamorfose installation, which stayed up for two and a half years and brought the issues of urban renewal, tourist spectacle and planning for common future under the spotlight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Faced with the challenges of gentrification and touristification, so prevalent in Porto nowadays (between one and two million tourists visit Porto every year), FAHR 021.3 trusts in the power of art and architecture to build more resilient cities and communities. They tell us they’re wary of the surge in the number of AirB&B properties, and they aim for their projects to provide flexibility and diversity of uses. Therefore, they see their installations as political statements thrown into the public space with the intention of changing it. They twist the familiar to push for fresh, be it in reimagining the famous and well-established traditions of São João festivities, or in connecting past and future in a form of a bench, or in offering the new center of gravity to Porto in order to celebrate - and open up for discussion - the city’s long-standing Unesco World Heritage title.

Heritage seems to be a constant source of inspiration for the team of FAHR 021.3. Their way of seeing an old train station in Taitung as a space for nothing which should be able to welcome anyone has led to a creative, yet practical solution: mosquito net stretched over a giant cube, opened for different interpretations by the future users. The project, aptly called “Nook”, brought them the Golden Award for Interim Architecture & Installation at TID 2019 Awards in Taiwan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Even while infusing the old with the new half the world away, FAHR 021.3  stays committed to their local struggles and collaborations. During our conversation, they point out the importance of artistic network they have in Porto and elsewhere, and praise the creative cooperation they have with Critical Concrete. For FAHR 021.3 it is important to know what’s behind the projects they get invited to work on, as they don’t want to lose control over the message of their piece, or participate in city marketing campaigns. They will, however, support the efforts they deem worthy: last year, alongside with 9 other practices, they participated in Art on Site in Alto Minho, a program that aims at cherishing cultural and natural heritage through artistic creativity in public places, and at promoting sustainable tourism practices.

FAHR 021.3 advises their clients to make small changes which can have grand impact and allow for a range of possibilities to happen. We leave their studio with a renewed flare for the unexpected and impatience for their next urban provocation.

NPC INTRODUCTION MEME    /    accepting !!
                            for    yuchen     >>     from    ( @38mph )
Tumblr media
This character doesn’t have a name or faceclaim because I’ve yet to decide on them but she’s existed since the moment I decided Yuchen could see ghosts!  (I actually have a drabble about the day they met that I haven’t posted and actually wrote for an assignment...lmao)  Unsurprisingly, she’s a ghost! But Yuchen, being Yuchen, never really realised. Context helps a lot in understanding their relationship so I’m going to use this post to talk about that, maybe more than about Ghost Girl herself.
They first met when Yuchen was about 15 years old. This is around the time he started getting interested in dance but he didn’t have anywhere decent to practice but his bedroom. However, it turned out even that was no good after his mum walked in on him dancing and, being the overly sincere teenager he was, this was just far too embarrassing for him to possibly recover from it. That’s when he started using the beach as his personal dance studio instead. It was a little awkward because the ground wasn’t level and there was no handy computer screen from which to copy his moves but he found a quieter part of the beach that people didn’t often visit, especially in colder month, and memorised what he could from his phone screen. It wasn’t perfect but it worked and it didn’t cost him any money. However, he wasn’t as alone as he’d thought and it turned out he was still being watched by someone. That someone was, of course, Ghost Girl!
From there, they grew to be friends! And that’s in spite of the fact that she was incredibly unsure about Yuchen because 1) how could she see him? and 2) why was he completely unbothered by it? Obviously, the answer to the second question is that he’s blissfully ignorant but that doesn’t matter. It kind of worked out. She didn’t like talking about the fact she was dead and any hints she dropped that she was seemed to mostly go over Yuchen’s head. As a result, he became the first and only friend she’d had in years, right up until the day he announced he was moving abroad to pursue dance. She was sad to see him go but supportive all the same and, thanks to his kindness, she was actually able to eventually move on and stop haunting the beach.
I haven’t actually mapped out the details of how and why she died besides that she drowned in the ocean so I’ll save that for another post. All I know for certain is that the world wasn’t kind to her and she died lonely. This is largely why she was so hesitant to befriend Yuchen when he first approached her and why it was so important that they did become friends. It’s also why she was never really able to explain her circumstances to him. It was too much like opening a sore wound.

“That’s enough reclining shots – let’s try a standing pose.”
The photographer sounded vaguely unsatisfied, but Hei Xiazi honestly – hell, even dishonestly - couldn’t understand why. The most beautiful man in Hollywood had just spent the last ten minutes lounging on a velvet sofa making come-hither eyes at his camera, and even through the protective layers of glass that surely should have had an effect.  Apparently not; the man was too busy flipping through his kit and making fussy, unhappy noises to himself to enjoy the sight of Xiao Hua rising from the sofa, with all its attendant glimpses of paradise as his loosely draped robes shifted to accommodate the movement.
No matter; Hei Xiazi was happy to enjoy it for the both of them.  “Need a hand, Hua-er?” he called, not making the least move to shift from where he was sprawled in a rocking chair off to one side.  He’d dragged the chair in from the neighboring set (“Granny and the Gold Rush”), because god knew there was nowhere else comfortable to sit.  The set that was serving as a temporary photography studio was made up to look like… well, he wasn’t sure what it was supposed to look like besides “lush” and “wealthy” and “exotic”, but in his varying poses Xiao Hua had leaned and draped and reclined on everything from a Turkish divan to a set of curving library steps.
Xiao Hua shot him a sidelong look (oooh, that was the one from “Polly’s Perils” serial 14 – Hei Xiazi was a big fan of that look) and shook his sleeve to make the brilliantly patterned silk fall more gracefully.  “Shouldn’t you be off somewhere studying your lines?”
“Ink, paper – that doesn’t speak to me.” Hei Xiazi waved this away lazily. “I can memorize lines anytime – right now I need inspiration!  Be my muse, Hua-er.  You know that my acting comes from the heart.”
“Really?  I thought it came from somewhere lower.”  Minding the length of his robes, Xiao Hua crossed to stand in front of what looked like a sawed-off Corinthian column, complete with potted fern.
“A man is the sum of his parts, and an actor even more so.  All of me needs inspiration, Hua-er.”  And oh, was he finding it, he thought as he watched the other man straightening the fabric that kept slipping to give such very… inspirational… flashes of skin.
He was distracted from this pleasant occupation by the photographer, who called their attention back with click of his tongue. “I only have one plate left,” he said, slotting it into his camera. “Xie Yuchen, my lovely, can you give me something different this time?”
Xiao Hua raised one eyebrow, letting his hand fall from the pillar.  In the other hand, a folded fan tapped against his silk-covered thigh.  “Different how?”
The photographer stepped back, framing Xiao Hua in the Vs of his hands, then shook his head in dissatisfaction.  “The energy is all wrong, darling.  Our magazine’s reader are interested in the beautiful Xie Yuchen that they see flirting on screen, or attending a movie premiere in a glittering designer gown.  Today’s shots have all been a bit… well… sweetheart, I was really hoping emphasize your femininity. You know,” he reached out towards Xiao Hua’s torso and Hei Xiazi sat up abruptly in his chair, but he was only twitching fussily at the folds of drapery that fell from Xiao Hua’s shoulders, making them fall more softly, more curvaceously.  “Something more like this.  Where’s the je ne sais quoi, where’s the femme fatale?”
Hei Xiazi, watching Xiao Hua’s narrowed gaze track the photographer as he retreated behind his camera again, did not relax.  Xiao Hua could look after himself – he knew that very well – but savior and support were different things, and just because someone did not need the one didn’t mean they had no need of the other. His own blood beat louder in his ears; the fussing of the photographer, previously humorous, was funny no longer.  Some people didn’t deserve the chances they got, and someone at the studio should have vetted this one more closely.
Some people only paid attention to the female roles Xiao Hua sometimes played, and the dresses he sometimes wore, and never truly paid attention at all.
“Like this?” said Xiao Hua.  His tone was soft and sweet, in a way that would have worried anyone who truly knew him.  Hei Xiazi, hearing that note, breathed a sigh and settled back in his chair.   Across the room, Xiao Hua made a moue at the camera, bringing his fan up to flutter next to his cheek in a way that drew attention to the sweeping length of his mascaraed lashes and the red, red pout of his lips.
The photographer, who should have run, brightened instead. “Yes!  That’s exactly it!  The temptress of the silver screen.  Stunning, darling, absolutely stunning.” He ducked under the hood and held up his flash.  “Perfect… hold that…hold that…”
In the last fraction of a second before the flash, Xiao Hua made a single, magical movement of his shoulders and the robe fell wide.
Now that, thought Hei Xiazi, listening to the photographer curse while the most beautiful man in Hollywood stood in front of him exactly as nature and art combined had made him, that was what he called inspiration.
