UAAC Session Call for Papers: Left in the Dark

As Martin Jay explores in Downcast Eyes, metaphors for sight broadly relate to empirical understanding. What kinds of understandings are associated with darkness or shades of black? The dark has diverse transhistorical associations, including black out protests; black holes (Anish Kapoor); race/colorism; chiaroscuro; infinity and cosmos (Malevich); protection (Hinduism); femininity (Taoism); inner light (Kabbalah); and eternal spirit (Jacques-Louis David). While various and sometimes contradictory, certain trends appear somewhat consistently, especially the presence of ontological questions in association with darkness and the shade of black. This session encourages papers that explore transnational and transhistorical themes of darkness in relation to questions of being and nothingness. We welcome sessions both within art and art history and from a variety of disciplines that employ art historical or artistic approaches. We accept both Francophone and Anglophone proposals. This is an in-person session.

Finally getting serious about pursuing art has been a huge paradigm shift for me. Like a lot of people, I had this idea that art would always only be a side thing for me, but I’ve been realizing lately that I’ve been unfair to myself by following a path that just isn’t for me.

Anyway here’s a moment from one of my art classes this summer. I am not a fan of drawing people, and especially not male-presenting faces and figures. I’m just motivated used to it, but I’ve been enjoying getting pushed out of my comfort zone.

Technically these are all pictures from yesterday but oh well. I went into work yesterday morning to help get some pieces together for a class. A retired professor came to guest lecture and requested some items. I got to sit through her lecture, which was amazing and I didn't get the chance to have a class with her so it was even better. In studio art my professor found the linoleum block he carved of a Holbein print and I got to print it! I love it so much and i'm planning on trying to simplify one and do a wood carving for my last print next week.

ECSTACY (i guess I'm spelling it like that now) at my college's student art show. people were really digging it despite being a much smaller piece than a lot of other works.

ecstacy is a small painting where i used a dead nexus tablet instead of a canvas. i just masked the screen off and went to town. there is a message about technology and the world being at our fingertips somewhere in it, but i wasn't really thinking about that when i was creating it. ecstacy was mainly an experimental painting that i was really happy paid off.
