Tumblr media
Lynn Yamada Davis, a TikTok creator who entertained millions of people with her zany style and cooking tips on her account, Cooking With Lynja, died on Jan. 1 in Red Bank, N.J. She was 67.
The cause of death, in Riverview Medical Center, was esophageal cancer, her daughter Hannah Mariko Shofet said. Ms. Davis lived in Holmdel, N.J.
Ms. Davis began creating the wholesome Cooking With Lynja videos in 2020 with her youngest child, Tim Davis, to help keep up his cinematography skills during the pandemic lockdown.
Her social media accounts have remained active after her death, because she had asked him to post videos that had already been edited. One such video shows the two of them looking for truffles in Italy.
“My mom was like my partner in crime,” Mr. Davis, 27, who edited the TikTok account, said in a phone interview.
Something else she requested, Mr. Davis said, was that he post a few older videos that they had made together about a decade ago.
Those early versions of what would later become an international TikTok sensation known for their lightheartedness were a way for Mr. Davis to learn how to make the food his mother cooked “as well as have a time capsule,” he said.
After the last Cooking With Lynja videos are uploaded the account will stop posting, he said.
Cooking With Lynja began in 2020 and gained wide attention with a video in which the 5-foot-tall Ms. Davis makes a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich while showing off some quirky dance moves. Soon, about one million people were following her offbeat content. (Today, the account has more than 17 million followers.) Potential sponsors noted the videos’ success and started contacting her.
More than three years later, the Cooking With Lynja YouTube account has nearly 10 million subscribers, and Ms. Davis’s Instagram account has more than two million followers.
In 2022, Forbes included Ms. Davis on its annual “50 over 50” list, which pays tribute to successful women over 50 years old. And she won Streamy Awards, honoring online videos, in the editing and food categories. In 2023, she attended the Forbes Women’s Summit in Abu Dhabi, where she spoke on a panel.
Lynn Yamada Davis was born on July 31, 1956, in New York City and lived most of her early life in Fort Lee, N.J. Her father, Tadao Yamada, was a businessman, and her mother, Mabel Fujisake Yamada, ran the household.
She graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and earned a master’s degree in business administration as well as public health from the Columbia University Business School.
Ms. Davis worked for Bell Labs (now AT&T Labs) and had a long career in telecommunications before her unexpected TikTok fame, Ms. Shofet, her daughter, said.
“She had this whole chapter as a groundbreaking female engineer, and she was very proud of that,” she added.
As a TikTok star Ms. Davis would get recognized around the world, including in Japan and Italy, where she traveled with her youngest son, Tim. Sean Davis, her other son, is a professional soccer player who used to be a midfielder for the New York Red Bulls and now plays for the Nashville Soccer Club.
“She was my first coach,” he said. When she would visit him in Nashville, he said, she’d get recognized in the street, often by young people who use TikTok a lot.
“That’s how I realized how famous she was,” Sean Davis said. “People would ask for pictures, and I would take the picture.”
Most of all, Cooking With Lynja provided Ms. Davis with much fun, Tim Davis said. With special effects that have tiny versions of Ms. Davis flying across the screen and quotes like “Lynja’s got that dope!” her videos appealed to several generations of viewers. In her videos she is seen preparing all kinds of foods, heard sinking her teeth into crispy sandwiches or potatoes, and shown karate-chopping Ramen noodles and much more.
Ms. Davis was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2019, which affected her voice. Two years later she was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. In one video, Ms. Davis bakes cookies for the medical workers who treated her.
In addition to her daughter Hannah and her sons, Ms. Davis is survived by her second husband, Keith Davis; another daughter, Becky Steinberg; two siblings, Jay Yamada and Karen Dolce Yamada; and two grandchildren. Her first marriage, to Hank Steinberg, ended in divorce.
In her final years Ms. Davis got to travel around the world, meet people as well as cook and eat amazing food, Sean Davis said. He added, “I just think her final chapter was exactly how she would have wanted it to be written.”
A correction was made on Jan. 12, 2024: An earlier version of a picture caption with this article misstated the surname of Lynn Yamada Davis’s brother. He is Jay Yamada, not Jay Davis.

Here are 5 things you must do to get a taste of Dubai’s nightlife:
Tumblr media
Driving down Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, a long eight-lane road that was lit up and busy with traffic even at two in the morning. The designer facades of the tall buildings on either side of the street reflected light. In no other place did I feel as safe returning home at 4 a.m. as I did when a student in Dubai, where I frequently spent the evenings discovering the city's clubs and hangout spots. The nature of Dubai's nights is so distinct from that of Dubai's days that it seems like a completely separate city. One has to get an emirates visa for Nigerian citizens before they can enjoy Dubai’s nightlife.
1.  Go Club-Hopping
Tumblr media
Dubai's club scene is extremely amazing and draws tourists from all over the world. Every type of nightclub can be found across the city, from opulent to edgy, so on Friday nights, you have a tonne of options! Large screens for game nights are available at Barasti (Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort), Chi@The Lodge (Al Nasr Leisureland) has a chic atmosphere and fantastic music, Kasbar (Al Sufouh Road) is a hip spot with authentic Arabic décor, and Nasimi Beach (Atlantis) offers a breathtaking view of Atlantis as a backdrop.
2. Order Late-night Shawarma
Tumblr media
Without a Shawarma run at midnight, no trip to Dubai is truly complete. Lebanese eateries that serve this delectable pork wrap in the early hours of the morning are the spots that are bustling with the most bustle after midnight. Near the sidewalk, where the waiters collect orders from cars, many people will halt their vehicles. Aroos Damascus and Al Shami Restaurant (Al Muraqqabat Road, Deira), Al Mallah (Satwa), and Reem al Bawadi (Jumeirah Road), among others, are the greatest locations for late-night Shawarma.
3.   Drive Through the City by Night
Given the excellent roads, street lighting, and well-organized traffic, driving in Dubai is a delight. Driving at night is a fantastic treat since there is less traffic, better music playing on the radio, lovely roads to go on, and a glittering city to admire. Al Mamzar, where a creek separates Dubai from Sharjah and a lovely Corniche (promenade) draws people for leisurely after-dinner strolls, is my favorite location for a long drive. You can find Filli Café directly across from this bustling location, where you can finish off your late-night trip with a cup of traditional masala chai. highly advisable
4.   Walk along the Marina
Tumblr media
Dubai Marina is a waterfront surrounded by speedboats, luxury yachts, and boats in the more modern area of the city. Families, couples, and friends enjoy the lights from the high towers as they are exquisitely mirrored on the crystal-clear seas as they stroll along the walkway, where European-style cafes are bustling with activity all night. This is a really beautiful way to experience Dubai's nightlife.
5.   Take a Puff of Sheesha at a Lounge
Tumblr media
What would a trip to Dubai be without a sheesha cigarette? Many people still like evenings at quieter sheesha lounges, which typically have multiple screens showing live football or cricket matches, despite Dubai's reputation for having exciting nightclubs and a fantastic food and beverage scene. In addition, they frequently include lounge chairs, pool tables, board games, and video games for a laid-back evening with friends. And of course, sheesha—or hookah, as it is more widely known—in a huge variety of tastes and sizes! This is a typical Dubai night out and is a lot of fun, especially with friends!
Good to Know
In Dubai, the weekend is Friday and Saturday—not Sunday!
Tuesdays or Wednesdays are often designated as Lady's Nights in clubs and pubs. To get the best deal, schedule your girls' nights out on these days.
The Dubai government is very tough about drinking and driving, and on the weekends there are many checkpoints to catch drunk drivers and severely punish them. Since taxis are often available close to popular nightlife areas, returning home is both safe and simple.
In Dubai, the drinking age is 21, in Abu Dhabi, it is 18, and it is forbidden in Sharjah.
Drinking is not permitted in undesignated or unlicensed areas and those who do so face harsh penalties.
Apply emirates visa for Nigeria nationals to enjoy all the tourist places and attractions in Dubai.
In Dubai, there is something to do every single hour of the day or night. What are you still holding out for? Let your hair down and take full advantage of Dubai's vibrant nightlife and for this, you have to take an emirates visa for Nigeria passport holders.

Travel
Countries I've visited:
England
Turkey
Greece
Macedonia
Germany
Serbia
Countries I want to visit:
Monaco
Attend an F1 race. My favorite track is Monaco, and it's my favorite driver's home race. This year, he broke the Monaco curse and won one of the most demanding tracks (and his home race). It was a great pleasure to watch it, and I hope that one day I can be there in person.
Peru
I've planned my trip to Peru several times. I'd like to stay in Cusco and make my way to Machu Picchu. If I have the opportunity, I'd love to take the hike up to Machu Picchu.
Denmark
When I read Hygge by Meik Wiking I didn't just want to visit Copenhagen, I wanted to move there. I was consumed by the Danish concept of coziness, candles, cozy food, and bike rides. I tried implementing the concepts of Hygge into my life in Colorado, but I couldn't do it justice. More than anything, I appreciate the practice because it encourages people to find the light in the darkness. Even when the days are cold and dark, Hygge reminds us to find comfort in the sheltered sense of danger.
Brazil
I'm not going to lie, I want to visit Rio de Janeiro because of the movie Rio about the blue parrot. I want to walk the shoreline, make my way up to Cristo Redentor, drink coffee, and experience the Amazon. I would also love to spend New Year's in Rio, where people dress in white and dance from the past to the new present.
Japan
Another one of my travel destinations was inspired by a book. When I was reading Ikigai by Francesc Miralles and Hector Garcia, I was entranced by the way of lived documented in their writing. I wanted to see the Cherry Blossoms pass and spend time in a small village. Although Tokyo would be an amazing experience, my Japan trip would be dedicated to slowing down and finding wisdom in ways practiced for generations. For this trip, my goal would be to look inward.
Thailand
Ever since I've been little, I've dreamed of seeing the Lanter Festival hosted in Chiang Mang in November. I want to see the night sky fill with starts, rising from the Earth, dancing in the sky as the locals honor the water spirits. While in Thailand, it would also be very cool to see Ayutthaya.
United Arab Emirates
If you are recognizing a pattern for how I choose my dream destinations, then you are correct. One category that is always bringing new inspiration are books. The other? Formula one. Abu Dhabi is another F1 location. I don't like the track as much, but as it's usually the final one for the season, I want to see a race there just to witness the drivers do donuts and destroy their tires. After the race, I would also love to see Dubai. Everyone I've asked about their Dubai travels has told me that it's such an incredible, clean, and orderly place that even the streets smell good. I would be more than happy to go there and make sure that the streets smell as good as I've been told.
